Well, my Orioles won yesterday so that's great that they won. Chris Tillman pitched a great game. I wish the others could do the same as well. I only had three pool games last night. The pirates also won last night, but the Braves lost so I had a loss. This weekend Indians at Orioles. They're both in my pool so it can go either way and it will still be a win for my pool, but my Orioles need wins. Anyway, I'm first today. Lucky me.

If anyone had a suggestion as to a family-friendly restaurant in Cape Breton which would be good for celebrating a birthday, please let me know.

July 22, 2016 @ 8:26 AM

Shocked to report that for the first time in my life I have seen a person wear Argos gear.

Don't have any intention of stereotyping but...he was in the 905 region, old, white, overweight and exiting a Walmart.

July 22, 2016 @ 9:07 AM

Is Toronto really going to spend that much money on one subway stop in Scarberia?

What a waste.

July 22, 2016 @ 9:19 AM

@Wally, if you spend your days hanging around Walmart in the 905 region, it probably says more about your situation than that of the Argos fan base.

July 22, 2016 @ 9:24 AM

July 22, 2016 @ 9:31 AM

@ Anonymous

Yes, they are going with the Scarborough subway boondoggle. The most recent debate was the last gasp for common sense and the 7-stop LRT.

Once the Crosstown opens and people see what LRT really is, there are going to be a lot of people wondering why they thought the one-stop subway was better than a seven-stop LRT.

But this is what happens when politicians rather than city planners make the decisions on transit.

July 22, 2016 @ 9:57 AM

Ben V

@ Barry: No that's what happens when a Ford disseminates misinformation for the mindless and keeps repeating subways, subyways, subways.

July 22, 2016 @ 10:03 AM

re: Argos jersey - with the exception of the 17 people in the stands, i have never seen a person with a jersey or other gear.

Jays of course is a different story, but one thing I wouldn't do is get a jersey with a player's name on it. The only name on that damn jersey is my name. Now, if we could come to some form of agreement between the player and I , I might be convinced to drape his name on my a $25,000 sort of agreement. And, if he walks around wearing a Jays jersey with MY name on HIS back, i'll settle for $10,000.

Any advice on how to deal with pro-Trump relatives?

July 22, 2016 @ 10:35 AM

Ben V

@Rob J: Do not engage. There is no point. They believe everything he's said even though he's said nothing and they can't substantiate or prove that what he's saying could work, because he actually hasn't said anything.

July 22, 2016 @ 10:44 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Rob J

It's like Ford Nation with higher stakes.

The similarities are eery.

Personally, I'd mute the person. I'd do it on social media and in real-life. You cannot reason with them, so there's no point in engaging. It'll just raise your blood pressure.

July 22, 2016 @ 10:47 AM

Rick C in Oakville

As irrational as Trump may have sounded to many in his acceptance speech, he has struck a cord with a large portion of the white baby boomer generation who remember a different America. Just as separation has wained in Quebec as a more diverse population grows, this probably is the sunset of this segment of US society.
The only thing I fear is a Rob Ford scenario, Trump may just pull it off.

July 22, 2016 @ 10:53 AM

Ben V

@ Rock C: That's the problem he's struck a cord without actually saying anything. He just says I'll make america great again, but when asked how, he just says something off handed like we are working on that or you just wait and see it'll be so great how great we make america again. If he's striking a cord with baby boomers than clearly that generation was full of fools.

It's even more egregious how partisan the RNC is, they hated trump hump until 2 months ago, now he is their savior.... Anyone in their own party who doesn't support trump is considered a traitor? It's mind boggling.

Re: subways vs. surface rail
I know people who are transit geeks, and some who are employed (and I guess "work") with the TTC. The arguments we are hearing today are the very same ones that came up in the 1940s and 1950s about the initial subway. It will cost too much (and it did, in the dollars of those days). We should be expanding surface rail (streetcars) to replace the increasing use of cars. And so on.

Despite the resistance to the time and money it was going to take, plus all of the disruption of life along Yonge Street, Toronto's government pushed their vision to go underground to introduce high speed rail transit to an up and coming modern metropolis.

Aren't we all thankful that they had that vision? Imagine Toronto now if that initial line had been delayed - and the ones that followed.

So lets do an informal poll, just the outcome and not actual preference, please. Trump or Hilly for Prez? As the wind blows today I would say Trump. That may change once Hilly gets back in the spotlight, but I can see the Trump train not slowing down.

My walking has been great the last three weeks. Between a walking trail and the treadmill, my last three weekly totals have been 45.0, 29.3, and 40.4 miles! Not too shabby for an over-50, almost blind guy.

Some great, hot weather on the Prairies. Summer is finally here!

July 22, 2016 @ 12:17 PM

The Voice of Reason

Anyone complaining about the heat? What a great summer overall.

July 22, 2016 @ 12:18 PM

The Voice of Reason

@Blind Dave

Those choices are both poor. I pity the US regardless of the result in November.

July 22, 2016 @ 12:30 PM

Ben V

@Blind Dave: I think and hope that America smartens up and goes with Hillary. I think she'll get it and it will be mainly because of urban centres.

July 22, 2016 @ 12:38 PM

@Blind Dave

Unfortunately, I think Trump will win.

He appeals to those people who would rather "feel" than "think" about their vote, and that is how to win an election.

July 22, 2016 @ 12:45 PM

Blind Dave

Yup, poor choices all round. There have been some ok (or passable) politicians in my 52 years on this planet, but never a leader in Canada or the USA who has inspired me, ever. I really dislike the idea of voting against someone, rather than actually for someone, but too often that is the case.

July 22, 2016 @ 12:50 PM

The Voice of Reason

@Blind Dave

Sadly, money is what wins elections. I am sure there are actually great candidates out there in both Canada and the US that would be heads and tails above what we have right now. The issue is the almighty dollar.

July 22, 2016 @ 1:00 PM

For the record, I think the Democrats win this election handidly.

@Blind Dave
Congrats on your walking totals! I like to do a couple hours a day down here in the Niagara Region...some great paths and trails through woods etc.

Yes, not engaging with pro-Trumpians is the best way...the unbreakable ideology of some of these people is both depressing and maddening!

July 22, 2016 @ 3:19 PM

I dont know why people are so outraged by the thought of a Trump presidency. Firstly, a lot of the stuff the guys says is for effect. He talks a good game but two days later will reverse what he said.

Secondly, he rarely speaks of social issues - ya know the kind that can alienate people. Abortion, euthanasia, gay marriage are topics he rarely talks about. He was actually against the LBGT bathroom laws that N Carolina instituted.

Unlike other GOPers, he hardly ever talks about fiscal issues like the wealthy being taxed too much or that the govt has too many benefits for the poor and/or out of work.

At the end of the day, Trump is not exactly a solid conservative so I like I stated earlier, why are liberals and moderates so afraid of him?

Anyway, those are my thoughts on Trump. Go ahead and insult me for not saying how bad he is.

@VOR: I will complain about the heat, my street is empty, all the kids are hibernating and all I hear are AC units whirring away.

Just enjoyed a week of 20 degree, with some rain showers in Grande Prairie AB. more my style of summer weather, and everything is so green.
You can see the strains on the economy there, hotels are maybe 30-40% occupancy, the line up at Timmies and McDonalds at 6am was out onto the street, now there maybe 3-4 cars, and there are buildings and lots empty where there was equipment parked in past years ready to go to work. Quite a change from when I first starting going up 15+ years ago.
I was talking to a client who said from what he had been reading that the Ontario economy was on a tear at 3 % growth, and the escalation of real estate pricing in the GTA. the cynic I am mentioned to him we have the highest debt levels at over 300 billion, and really no plan to reduce it. The balanced budget will be a smoke and mirrors Liberal Kabuki theatre act, that isn't sustainable as you can only sell off so much Hydro and government assets to prop up your balance sheet. Land Transfer Taxes and Consumer spending are really the drivers of our economy, it only depends on how deep the consumer wants to go into debt to sustain this.
Glad I am only 7-10 years from retirement.

Mike, forgot to respond to your request for a family friendly place in Cape Breton Island. Rita MacNeil has a tea house you could check out, and believe me East Coasters are family friendly having many relatives from this region, us Scots having over run it several hundred years ago!.
It's a great region and make sure you drive the Cabot Trail etc. and visit the Brador Lakes.

July 22, 2016 @ 7:10 PM

@TorontoMike, I don't remember too many restaurants from my trip to Cape Breton, but definitely recommend a stop in Baddeck to see the Alexander Graham Bell historic site. It is really cool. We stopped at Rita's Tea Room but they were closed when we went by.

July 22, 2016 @ 10:06 PM

How about those Orioles. Great that they won and Mark Trumbo finally hits his 29th home run. That's so awesome and Dylan Bundy pitched a great game. The Indians lost though. That's a win for my pool either way, but I had all other losses in my pool with losses by the Rangers, my Diamondbacks, Braves and Pirates so I only got one win, but it was by my Orioles. As for heat, it's not good to work out in this stuff. It's really hot out there, but at least no worries about people getting stuck in the snow or anything like that.

July 23, 2016 @ 5:49 AM

Well, how about those Orioles. Great win. Mark Trumbo finally hit homer 29. Awesome and Dylan bundy pitched a great game so a pool win. Indians lost though, but either way would be a pool win. I had losses in myy pool. Rangers lost. My diamondbacks lost again and Pirates and Braves lost. I only got one pool win. As for heat, it sucks to work out in it. It's too hot, but at least no worries about snow storms or anything like that.

First reviews aeroplan in of the Tragically Hip's tour and they are kind of amazing. I am getting all emotional just reading the stories from Victoria - can'take imagine what it must be like to see them in person this summer.

July 23, 2016 @ 7:01 AM

Well my Orioles look like they're gonna pull another one out tonight. My pool is looking pretty good with the Mariners win and the Red Sox losing, I can only hope that the Jays turn it around tomorrow cause I like them.

July 23, 2016 @ 10:32 PM

I love music - all genres.
Just watched a Bee Gees documentary. Their harmonies are the best with Beach Boys 2nd, Simon & Garfunkel 3rd & Lennon & McCartney 4th, Waters & Gilmor 5th.

Keep cool

July 23, 2016 @ 10:45 PM

Well, my last post came in twice. I got timed out so didn't think it got through. My Orioles win again over the Indians. Mark Trumbo does it again home run number 30. Also Pedro Alvarez hit a homer and Kevin Gauzman got his second win. Indians lost the second in a row. That would be a pool win either way. The Rangers also won. it's about time. I also got a Pirates win, but my Diamondbacks and Braves lost. Anyway, Grocery Gateway made me mad again. I got a substitution that I didn't want. They sent a driver who can't speak English. He didn't know where the substitution was. He had trouble reading English. I called and complained. The lady said that they do get temporary drivers at times and I did get a credit for $20.00. Anyway, I think everyone in Canada should be able to speak English. All immigrants should be forced to take an English test. If they fail it, they have to take an English course or they can refuse, but then they have to leave the country. I don't know why there are so many people around who can't speak English, but it should be a must for people who live in Canada.

So will the IOC have the guts to out right ban Russian athletes from RIO or will they cave and go with the corrupted status Quo and allow the cheaters to participate? For the comments I read that say they should let them all use performance enhancing drugs to level the playing field, maybe someone from the WWE could put on the next Olympics then.

July 24, 2016 @ 9:16 AM

Well I'm kind of complaining about the heat- BUT only on the 401 stuck i traffic on my bike .

Between the sun beating down,The ridiculously hot concrete bouncing heat back up the heat of my air cooled engine( Air cooled? WTF is with that? I NEED a new bike) and of course that fact that i was wearing a black motorcycle jacket ,leather boots and a helmet meant that it was exhausting and not so fun.

Even in a downpour i don't think " WTF am I ding out here on this thing?" But friday ? yes i was thinking that!

@ Mike when I went to the cabot trail in 2008 we ate at a really great place in downtown Baddeck . I'm not 100% sure what family friendly means (Ok I know strippers pretty much rule out families ) but there were kids there . As for the name ... I'll have to get back to you

July 24, 2016 @ 10:28 AM

James Edgar

Just did a google drive around Baddeck and it's the restaurant at the Lynwood I'm thinking of. We liked it so much we ate there two nights in a row. Not super cheap but not over the top either if my memory is not 100% shot.

Any place that has "LobsterSuopper" in the name is probably a decent bet on the east coast. Usually a ton of good food at a decent price.

Don't mean to derail from the current chatter but when did Katey Simpson jump from CTV to CBC? Was a bit of a surprise to see her pop up on CBC newsworld the other day and last seeing her being with CTV and appearing on CP24.

Katie Simpson left CP24 a while ago for a gig in Ottawa. I don't know what station she was at there, but she quit for a gig at CBC a little while ago.

Ok, so Katie left CP24 for a gig at CTV in Ottawa, and quit that for a gig at the CBC in March.

Believe me ,Katey Simpson does NOT jump anywhere.
I think there is a court order involved.

As a matter of clarity, i don't think the Russian's are the only athletes using PED's.

Regardless, the IOC had a chance to do something bold, but they folded like a cheap walmart chair. There was an opportunity to send a message that would defend clean athletes and protect the Olympic spirit, but they took the easy way out and will continue to enable the cheaters.

The Olympics and the IOC are right there with FIFA, in that the games are only about the money. The IOC made revenue the priority when they let in the NBA players, then expanded to allow pro tennis players, and NHL'ers. And then this year they went after the pro golfers all for the sake of money.

The Olympics gets further away from the Olympic Charter as each set of games rolls around, and the amateur athlete is nothing put a pawn.

Unfortunately, I think it will be up to the athletes themselves to decide what's important, participating clean vs participating against cheaters. Athletes will ultimately have to take a stand, and boycott the games until the organizers take a zero tolerance approach.

July 24, 2016 @ 9:08 PM

Rick C in Oakville

@anonymous, you nailed it, it is now all about the money. I never understood letting any pro players participate, once you hit the big show, you have lost your Olympic opportunities as far as I recall. Given this current sham the Olympics have become, if any Canadian city tries to get the games, I would lobby my local MP to not waste any of our tax dollars until it was truly cleaned up.

July 24, 2016 @ 10:54 PM

Well, how about those orioles. Another win although the Indians had the lead in the third inning. Anyway, Jonathan Schoop hit a home run and the Indians did tie it in the end, but then Nolan Reimold homered to win the game as a walk off. I got four out of five pool wins as the Braves lost again, but I got wins from the Rangers, Diamondbacks and Pirates. Yes, my Diamondbacks won again with Yasmani Tomas hitting a couple home runs.

July 25, 2016 @ 10:02 AM

Trump has the mainstream media aligned against him. He has the Repub. party elders lined against him. He has many neo-cons jumping ship to Hillary. Why?
Because he has questioned endless war. There's your answer.

Plus of course he is a racist and sexist and possibly some sort of crook. But that normally would not offend the people listed above. So it comes down to war and budgetary things (LOSS) concerned with that.

Jill Stein of the Green Party will get 10 million votes. Hillary will lose and Trump will win. But with the (ahem) voting machines in her corner Hillary will be declared the winner.

Orioles won again. That was a close one, that's for sure. Anyway, they won but my Diamondbacks lost. Anyway, Rangers also won so I got two out of three pool wins. I hope to get six tonight. Anyway, I really really hate Rogers. Guess what, I got a bill from them. It's not very high, but I don't want to pay it because I hate Rogers and I hate the fact that I have to have them whether I want them or not. Remember when I said there would be a meeting on August 2 to pick up one of these boxes and if we don't get a box, we would have to pay? Well, I did say I would get the stupid box because I don't want to pay at all. Well, now they sent me a bill. I want to go to that meeting and tell Rogers I do not want to pay any bills. I don't care if they cut me off. I don't want them in the first place. I am not paying them anything. I really hate them. I don't need TV anyway. I have my baseball game day audio. I have to pay for that, but I don't mind, it's something I want. I don't need TV. The condo always paid for it as part of our fees and they still are so I'm not paying anything. They will get that bill thrown right in their face and they can shove their stupid boxes up where the sun doesn't shine.

July 26, 2016 @ 5:29 AM

My Orioles lost. That was no good. Adam Jones homered, but they lost and my Diamondbacks lost. Indians won though as they fought back to win. Franky Lindor got the walkoff run. I got only two pool wins. Braves also won surprisingly. Rangers and Pirates lost. I only got two wins in my pool. Anyway, I meant what I said. Rogers will get this bill shoved in their face. I will flat out tell them I am not paying anything. I do not need them or want them so just go to fricken hell. I hate Rogers and I hate Bell. They're both awful companies.

July 27, 2016 @ 6:18 AM

My Orioles lost. This sucks. My Diamondbacks won. Yasmani Tomas tot two homers. Boy he's hot. Actually all my NL teams won. All my AL teams lost. Indians lost. This sucks. Rangers lost. I have my football pool all set to go with one person so I have two teams from every division. I have Ravens and Browns, Panthers and Saints, Cardinals and Seahawks, Cowboys and Eagles, Dolphins and Jets, Lions and Packers, Chargers and Chiefs, and Titans and Colts. I hope they all do well, especially my Ravens and Cardinals.
