I was in Nice only a couple of weeks ago for the Euro Cup. I remember telling my friend Stephan"We're in Nice the terrorists won't bother with a coastal town....". How wrong was I. Not just that, but it's really creepy to remember walking down the same avenue after being in the fan zone drinking and having a good time with 100's of other people. Probably no different than the people celebrating bastille day.

I have no idea how the western world is going to stop this death cult. One thing for sure, it wont be through hashtags like "praying for peace" or changing your Facebook avatar to the French flag.

July 15, 2016 @ 9:04 AM

Ben V

But Argie.... It's what armchair activists do. Praying for Peace on FB so they can feel better about themselves before going about the rest of their daily lives.

Worst part about this are the gun activists in the states using this as a platform to spew their insanity about the right to bare arms.

July 15, 2016 @ 9:09 AM

Argie

@Ben
Yeah but if the terrorists had used a gun to kill people the anti-gun activists would have pounced on it as well. You know that as well as I do.

Honestly, I get tired of both groups. IMO, they're both wrong.

Truly heartbreaking and infuriating at the same time. I wish we could somehow nuke every radical insane fucker on the planet, but there's simply no way to stop this sort of thing. As John Moore alluded to this morning, you tighten security at airports...you have more stringent gun control...you implement stricter immigration/refugee policies....yet at the end of the day, it will never be enough.
The only way we can claim victory is continuing to live our lives fully.

On a related note, this is part of the reason I do not use expressions such as "bless you" when someone sneezes or "that's 7 years bad luck" when a mirror breaks. I intentionally walk under ladders and when I see someone knock on wood I chuckle. This sort of thing has a dotted line connection to the insanity we seem to be witnessing every couple of weeks.

After each terrorist event we get the same tired and threadbare response from Trudeau, John Kerry, Obama and all the other buffoons promising "solidarity," "outrage," and "resolve." Personally I am tired of inaction from our Western allies and lack of leadership from the U.S. and Canada in prosecuting this 'War on Terror.' We need another direction and another leader from North America who will treat this threat like a real war on the us and will stop being politically correct with these animals.

@Toronto Mike - I'm with you there brother.

But if you or I brought that up in polite conversation as a silly thing to say or tweet, we're the men in black seen as grumpy carmudgeons. ("How can that possibly be a bad thing!?", they'll say). In reality of course people say those things to cover their bases. They won't be honest with themselves because they're brainwashed, but if they were, they'd realize these are expressions which, by making it ok to use them in everyday conversation and passing them on to new generations, are actually contributing to the problem.

Well, so I'm not first. Doesn't matter. Can I have six pool wins today. I need wins by the Orioles, Indians, Rangers, Braves, Pirates and Diamondbacks although the Braves probably won't win. I want to throw the Braves away, but I'm not allowed to do that. Diamondbacks are really falling behind. I wish they would win more. Hopefully my Orioles will hang onto first. Orioles and Indians ALCS which the Orioles will win. That would probably go five or six.

I see a lot of people angry about "See we should have done more" to help stop this. But I haven't heard the solution for the problem. Is it more air strikes (we been doing that for a while). More ground troops? Are we willing for the expense and possible draft for such a wide scale invasion, and of course the obvious question, where do u invade. Syria? Egypt? Iran? Saudi Arabia? Turkey? Tunisia? WE did that with Iraq and Libya and most concluded that it must made things worse, why would it be any different now?

Some will say no more refugee/immagrants, but we have seen alot of these western attacks are from local nationalists who at times are actually born in the country they attacked. Some want a more intrusive government, people are fine with that idea when there side is in power, the second the other side is in power all of a sudden those people are about privacy & think there will be abuse of power. Heck even not allowing people on "Watch lists" not to be able to purchase guns was rejected by the same people who want to "do something" about these terrorists attacks but if it goes against their pro-gun policy they reject it. Everybody wants "something done" but nobody actually wants any skin in the game.

Heck look at Trump, he doing what Trump does and grandstanding about this horrible tragedy. The Trumpers are blaming the Prez for this. But Trump (who has been very vague about what he plans to do on a geopolitical level, with just slogans like "Be strong") one of the few things he was actually specific on during the debates was to remove army bases, troops and financial support for ally countries, and how American should take care of themselves and other countries need to stand on their own feet. But when an attack happens in France it somehow we weren't storng enough? Again what is he plan, what does he want to do.

Also concerning that minutes after it happend, Trump start saying it's an act of war. Against who exactly? Shouldn't the French governement have something to say about it first considering it happend in their land.

July 15, 2016 @ 12:37 PM

Barry

@ Tron

Yeah, that's the problem: what to do?

Because it feels like there's actually nothing we can do, except things that would make it (and us) worse.

Really, ISIS has locked on to a strategy that can't be defended against: they encourage lone wolf attacks. Lone wolf attacks can be done without any communications chatter for authorities to pick up on. Lone wolf attacks can be planned and pulled off without a thought ever leaving the lone wolf's head.

How do you stop that?

And their actions are made even easier when someone realizes that all they need to do is drive their car through a crowd. No bomb needs to be prepared, no guns are needed. They just need to find their keys.

It's not something we can defend against. It requires almost no planning. Hell, it can be done on a whim.

If there's any bright side (and it's not a very bright side) it's that this is all they're capable of: attacks that kill people in the dozens. You can't bring down a government in that way -- all you can do is scare people. And a society is only harmed if we allow it to harm us.

That's cold comfort, because lives are still going to be lost ... but at least it's better than large scale assaults. A society is bigger than these lone wolf attacks. But we have to keep ourselves from reacting with hate, because once we do that, we become divided, and there is a risk we could fall apart. That's why anti-Muslim sentiment is so dangerous. ISIS wants anti-Muslin sentiment to grow, because that will help them achieve their ends.

Neighbours say he wasn't overly religious. He beat his wife. One real gun and a bunch of fake ones. No terrorist org has claimed responsibility. More likely this was an asshole who happened to be Muslim, rather than ISIS follower (although he may have gotten the idea from their propaganda).

July 15, 2016 @ 1:24 PM

Irv

@Barry

The truth is more often than not ISIS has nothing to do with these attacks. The reason they claim control of it is that it benefits them. They appear larger & more invincible than they really are. Further, this fuels the "lone wolf" terrorists to act out and ISIS takes credit. In fact, there is likely no connection whatever. They execute this fear tactic very well too & our modern media laps it up. The lone wolf attacks are great because there IS no communication. As far as technology goes, ISIS is relatively intelligence. For example, they'll create an email account, they'll write up commands and leave the email in drafts. The receiving party is told to check the email & checks the drafts. Successful communication but NO email is sent. If you've noticed lately "drafts" are now seen and saved by the email companies like Google, Yahoo, etc. #hmmm. I wonder why.

ISIS are not Muslims. They are extremists. Folks like Argie or VoR act as if Christians don't have radical extremists. Here are some examples

- the IRA. 3200 deaths, 10s of thousands wounded
- KKK. Dozens of murders & thousands more intimidated in the name of God
- Native Residential schools. 6000 kids raped & murdered. Under the name of the Catholic Church
- Almost ALL Mexican drug cartels are Christians
- MS 13, a violent & notorious gang with connections to Latin America often get tattoo's of Jesus Christ on them. They are 80,000 strong and some of the most evil people in the world.

What the media never mentions is most of the folks killed by ISIS are other Muslims. We watch Western media & it picks and chooses what stories will capture the attention. For example, France, especially Paris, has had severe issues with racism & "white versus brown" for some time now. In fact, when the Mod of this blog was going to Paris I chided him for not seeing the real Paris. The ugly part. Riots, fires, attacks are all part of life in Paris and have been for decades. Publications like The Economist have articles on it. It doesn't make the Fox evening news though.

What can be done?

- cut funding to ISIS
- disrupt ISIS recruiting. No soldiers. No terrorists.
- military strikes.

Something as simple as reporting an ISIS Twitter account to Twitter is helping. Oh sure, people say "so they'll get a new one". Well they have to set up a new account and add in all their contacts. Make them do that repeatedly and they will grow tired of it. Hackers on social media have made HUGE inroads in eliminating ISIS account. Those accounts are needed for funding and more importantly...recruiting. You need to find angry young men.

What can a person do? You could get involved in disrupting the supply chain. Most obvious is the military. Become a reservist, give up 1 or 2 weekends a month & every Wednesday. You're a real soldier, you get paid and you make a difference. All tours of duty are VOLUNTEER. The military is in dire need of soldiers especially outside of big cities.

Or you could get involved n the forensics of finance or even do something as simple as spend an hour on social media looking up accounts and reporting them. A simple person with zero skills can do that. It makes a difference. If you saw a pedophile on Twitter would you report it? Yes. So do the same thing with someone preaching the values of terrorism. Take the time to read the Koran & understand the basics of the book & it's culture. You can find free copies for a phone or tablet in iBooks. All in English. It's as boring as the Bible.

But in my opinion the real key to defeating ISIS is working to understand Muslims & working with them to eradicate these cockroaches. None of us are as cruel as all of us as the #Anonymous saying goes. We need to join forces with the moderate Muslims & work together. The reason ISIS builds these walls is because it's in their best interests. "You see, the white infidels hate you all for your God". It's called recruitment. It's NO different than the pimps & groomers who show up at shopping malls to "friend" your 15 year old daughter to force her in the sex trade. The first tactic is to build a wall between the young girl and her parents by showing her how much the parents really don't like her. And it works. For ISIS and for gangs. And for human trafficking groomers.

The usual nonsense from you. Thanks for that.

In regards to stopping ISIS, if we can, great. That still wont stop the scourge of Islamic jihadist around the world. There was plenty of Islamic terror long before ISIS can into existence (remember Al Qaeda, PLO,etc) and we all know there will be plenty even if (and its a big IF) ISIS is defeated.

Sure, ISIS will usually claim responsibility for any "lone wolf" action as it increases their cred among the jihadi world.

@VoR

Argie's issue is pretty simple. His "intelligence" and facts are all from mainstream media & his opinions are influenced by his emotion and his own racism. That's why he's quick to condemn Islam but slow to even acknowledge his own little religion is rife with corruption, violence, etc. I gave you some examples in my post.

There will always be extremists, but with Islamic extremists the solutions are to work WITH primarily moderate Muslims. In case you all missed it, THEIR KIDS get blown to shit all the time. THEIR FAMILIES risk their life swimming across an inland sea to escape the hell that is Syria. Life is so ugly over there soldiers do a single tour of duty and come back broken. Forever. You see how many fucking soldiers kill themselves man? You think that's from the food in the mess hall? And trust me when I say it's EXTREMELY competitive to get yourself on a deployment. The boys are chomping at the bit to get over to fight ISIS. If you want to question what I'm saying or believe I'm making it all up, go down to the local armory and ask the CO.

We're not fighting Muslims. We're fighting extremists. Argie doesn't seem to accept that. So I told him to join the Reserves & go defend this country. Go fight the enemy. He doesn't. He just stands there like a yappy little dog barking.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying ISIS is involved directly. Quite the opposite. There have been and will continue to be "lone wolf" attacks, but they're not specifically directed by ISIS. They're isolated people who believe in ISIS and their goals but are acting on their own. The only ISIS "involvement" is that ISIS called for lone wolf attacks ... so people with no actual ties to ISIS will do these things, in large part because they're easy to pull off, in the way that yesterday's attack was.

Well, how about those Orioles. That's a great win. They were losing those, but came back and won the game 4 to 3. Jonathan Schoop and Pedro Alvarez hit homers. My Diamondbacks lost again. They always lose. It really sucks. I only got two pool wins so I'm still not doing well in my pool. Orioles and Indians both won. they're the teams I can count on. I am now glad I picked the Indians. At first I was disappointed I couldn't pick the Royals, but they're slumping bad so I'm glad I picked the Indians. Rangers are really slumping. Another loss for my pool and all my NL teams lost, Braves, Pirates and Diamondbacks. I got only two wins. If this keeps up, then I am not going to win the money this time. My Orioles and Indians are giving me wins, but not the others.

Well, only two wins for my pool last night. My Orioles won. That was a nailbiter, but Chris Tillman pitched another good game and Zach Britton got another save. JJ hardy got a two run homer for my Orioles. My diamondbacks won as well though so that's great, very close 3 to 2 win. All my other teams lose. Indians were winning, but they lose to the Twins. I could have had the Twins in my pool, but picked the Indians instead, but now they're slumping a bit. They blew this one. Also the Rangers lost. What's wrong with the Rangers. Also the Braves lost again. That's not a surprise. The Pirates lost again as well. Anyway, Bill wants me to keep track of the pool. I have to add everyone's teams up by taking away the number of losses from the number of wins and adding it up. I've been doing it all along. I'm not winning, I know that. The Orioles loss was the only loss I had in my pool. I had five wins yesterday. Diamondbacks won which is great and another homer by Jake Lam. How could anyone not like Jake Lam. He's a keeper. Also Indians won. That was a really good game. Josh Tomlin hasn't lost a game on the road, he's amazing. Lots of homers by Mike Nappoli, Jason Kipnis and Tyler Naquin. Yan Gomes had to be carted off the field though. He's hurt. Also Rangers finally won a game and so did the Braves which is a surprise and so did the Pirates. Irv says "What the media never mentions is most of the folks killed by ISIS are other Muslims. We watch Western media & it picks and chooses what stories will capture the attention. For example, France, especially Paris, has had severe issues with racism & "white versus brown" for some time now"

I am normally not big in conspiracy but Irv is a 100% right here and it couldn't be more obvious as this week with the cop shootings by black men. So the Dallas and Louisiana is all over the news , full coverage for each incident. But there was another L.E.O who were shot dead this week that nobody mentions.

Last Monday, there was a breaking news on the cable networks that a couple of bailiffs in Michigan were shot dead. The reports were sketchy inititally just that it happened. The national cable news channels went to it live with local affaliate reporters. By Monday night the story vanished. I wondered the next day what happend to that story, so I serached it myself. Found local Michigan media following it up saying it was a white guy named Larry Gordon who did it. The mainstream media was all ready to jump on the story connected to Dallas but once they found out it didn't fit the narrative they want to push they dropped it, no follow up, no round-the-clock coverage, no coverage of funearls, or national leaders giving their opinion, no national outrage with #bluelivesmatter. It just became another local story

The right-wing news/blog sites were hilarious on this, they treat the "Breaking news" from the courthouse on Mon afternoon of the incident, and literally no followup. The story just ended. But that expected by them. But mainstream (especially on the TV side) pretty much did the same thing. Some of the national papers did a brief followup, but even that no where near the coverage of the Dallas and Louisiana incidents.

The Rangers lost another one. What's wrong with the Rangers? Also the Braves lost another one. This all sucks. It's not a good day. Four losses. My Diamondbacks and Pirates didn't play. Why can't I have six wins.
