First. Listening to The Lost Indie City way cool. Have a great Canada Day!

Happy Canada Day!

July 1, 2016 @ 9:06 AM

Happy Canada Day. Hope you all have a good one. So I'm second today. Oh well, I'm hardly ever first. My Orioles lost. This is no good, but Hyun Su Kim homered again. I want him to be rooky of the year. Chris Tillman didn't pitch very well. He lost his second game and this is also a big loss for my pool. I'm glad I have the Indians in my pool. Great that they won again. Hope they go for 14 today. Rangers lost though. Two losses in a row for the Rangers. Not good because that doesn't help my pool so two of three of my AL teams lost. Only the Indians won. Braves won. That's a rare thing, but it helps my pool, but one win won't cut it. They need to win a lot more. Pirates or Diamondbacks didn't play. I wonder if the Habs will be better without Subban. Who knows. Subban is a good player, but he injures people on purpose and runs to the refs too much. Well, Carey Price will be back and that will sure be a help because he can beat anyone.

July 1, 2016 @ 9:09 AM

Cheers Dutch! Thanks for listening! PF

I love this country. O Canada!

Blind Dave

Back on my tread after a long break. No, I have been a good boy and have been on the waking trail near my work, so I'm still getting 1-2 hours in per day. But with three days off and various appointments on Tuesday I know I have to tread it this weekend.

I am cueing up the TO Mike'd Spike pod as well as giving Lost Indie City a try. Now, which to do first? Decisions, decisions...

I had a few comments from listeners that John Gallagher was a little off-mic, making him a little quiet.

I've amplified his audio best I can. I hope it's better now. The convo was pretty awesome.

NHL Free Agency. What the Hell are these teams giving out 6-7 year contracts 6-7MM for late 20-early 30 year old players. I know it's up front on early years.
Glad to see Reimer picked up by Fla. as backup to Bobby Lou, but 5 year contract??

Bergevin in Mtl. (hey Cheryl) Radulov - 5.75M for 1 year & hasn't played in NHL for 4 years.
Subban is laughing & Weber is crying.

July 1, 2016 @ 4:44 PM

Happy Canada Day!

Listening to some James Horner music today and enjoying the outdoors a bit. You had mention last year when he passed, it's been just over a year. The music/comedy duo of Jon & Al Kaplan did a video a couple weeks back - nice way to bring a smile but also pay homage: Without James Horner. :)

I didn't know too much about John Gallagher actually so enjoyed that recent podcast episode. I like when the podcasts can serve a dual purpose of some great radio stories/chronology (and helping connect a diagram points of a station's era or who went where) but also getting to know the guest. Looking forward to what's coming down the line!

Getting into movies more this summer, Watched the Conjuring 2 opening week, I am really starting to like this franchise both movies have been great. C.I was way better than I expected, major props to the work who skills go way beyond "muscle dude" her's got tons of charisma and funny timing too.

We talked about the changes in Global (I still can't get over not resigning Liza) but over at CP24 it seems like Rena Heer is leaving, not sure where she is heading. But probably the second phoniest good bye of recent memory (Anne will always be first) Lindsey Deluce is moving from CP24 to CTV and they acted like a big news good bye which I found strange as it's under the same umbrella

Interesting that TSN went for full free agent coverage yet Rogers didn't. Personally I think it's a waste of TV time.

So is TOMike at todays baseball game, These marathon games seem to be his speciality.

Here's my 18 inning game, though:

I spent Canada Day in Banff Alberta. Thank god for my own parking spot. The main area was blasting Tragically Hip and everyone was singing

July 1, 2016 @ 9:15 PM

big ben

Anybody here want Canadian soldiers dying over the Crimean Peninsula?
And if so would you be willing to take their place.

July 1, 2016 @ 9:15 PM

Few thoughts.

LGBTQ. Be proud & finally you all have a voice. Good luck Sunday.

Longest game in Jays history-19 innings but lose. Goins pitched a great inning getting 3 outs with double play. Barney struck out 1 batter. Gotta be versatile & give credit. The plate ump was TERRIBLE, inconsistent.

Leafs sign Matt Martin & my opinion a great pickup as NHL leader in hits last season & from Ontario. Cherry will be pleased.

Subban for Weber? Habs lose the FACE of the franchise but may not have been the most popular teammate as he wasn't even voted for Humanitarian player of the year by HIS OWN TEAMMATES.

Something fishy with the explosion in Mississauga. 2 dead & husband was convicted of murder years ago.

Hope all had a great Canada Day.

July 1, 2016 @ 10:39 PM

Well, yes, a 19-inning game yesterday. My Orioles and Diamondbacks both played late, I wanted some day baseball and I can get any broadcast I want. Tuned into the Indians feed. The Indians are in my pool, but boy was that game really long. I listened until the bottom of the 19th and Indians were leading but I got tired of baseball for the day so turned it off. It was much too long anyway. Well, this is a win for my pool. My Orioles did lose. That sucked. Why are they losing now. Not a good thing. Rangers won though which is a good thing because it's a win for my pool. Diamondbacks lost. Jake Lam homered, but they still lost which is bad for my pool. Braves lost as well, so the winning streak wasn't very long at all. Pirates won though. That's good for my pool and second of the win streak so hope the Pirates keep it up because they are the only NL team I have who is actually doing something. I should have picked the Phillies. Why didn't I pick the Phillies. They suck pretty bad as well, but not as much as the Braves. I really don't know much about Radulov. As for Oh Canada, why did they have to put God Keep Our Land in there. It wasn't in there when I sang it in school. Instead it was Oh Canada, glorious and free so take God out of there. Hard to sing that if you don't believe in God. Star-spangled Banner doesn't have the word God in it so Oh Canada shouldn't either.

July 2, 2016 @ 8:19 AM

couldn't agree with you more about our national anthem.

July 2, 2016 @ 9:20 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Very astute point, Cheryl.

I've been barking about this for a while now.

We need to remove god from the national anthem. I won't sing that line.

July 2, 2016 @ 9:46 AM

Jason from Sudbury

As a Habs fan I love the Subban trade for Weber. Don't get me wrong I always liked Subban but Weber is a better player and has a heluva shot. He'll be great on the power play too. As for Radulov, its a 1 year deal, so low risk, but I wouldn't have given him 5.75m.

July 2, 2016 @ 10:06 AM

The Star Spangled Banner contains the word God.

Question: Has anyone here lived in Ottawa? If so, would it be beneficial to learn to speak French? I'm assuming yes?

July 2, 2016 @ 11:05 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

God shows up in the fourth verse of the Star Spangled Banner, but people only sing the first verse, which is godless.

July 2, 2016 @ 11:14 AM

I suck at googling, but I can't find a definitive answer about when the 'God' line was added. anyone? its really annoying me now.
Like Cheryl - in primary school when I sang it daily there was no God.

July 2, 2016 @ 12:28 PM

The song contains the word God. If you don't sing the entire song that's not the issue with the song it's the issue with someone singing it. Iron Maiden doesn't have guitar solos if you only sing the first verse too.

Really it's not your "home and native land" but that sounds better than "catholic imperialists committing genocide".

July 2, 2016 @ 12:44 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Please. You won't find a single American (or Canadian for that matter) who knows the Star Spangled Banner beyond the first verse.

It's all they know, it's all they sing, it's all that matters.

I used to have a podcast with Elvis called Your Blog Sucks. Wed each bring a few items to the table that we thought sucked.

One episode, we discussed god in O Canada. We both thought it sucked and should be brought back to its original state.

Robert Stanley Weir's original lyrics in 1908 contained no mention of God. It was “O Canada, glorious and free” but at some point was changed to “God keep our land glorious and free”. As to when exactly that happened, I can't find an exact year... but it was at some point after 1908 and before the anthem became official in 1980.

July 2, 2016 @ 1:17 PM

G.o.d. in the anthem originally stood for gracious old Diefenbaker but they removed the periods.

July 2, 2016 @ 1:29 PM

Maybe it's my age (I was born in 1976) but I recall "God keep our land" always being in the anthem all through primary and parts of highschool. I say part because when I hit grade 10 our school started playing this English-French version of the anthem in the mornings where they did the first half in English and then the 2nd half in French.

Then again, I recall in the late 80;s when they removed the Lord's Prayers from the morning bits after the anthem.

July 2, 2016 @ 2:47 PM

I remember first singing the "God Keep Our Land" line in September 1980. So I think it changed that summer.

There was no option for 'random order' or 'posts we thought you'd like most' at the top algorithm.
I'd like to see random order just for a few days. Don't change a hair for me, not if you care for me... Don't go changing, to try and please me, you never let me down before...

I couldn't sing O Canada to save my life. It has changed multiple times since we sang it in school. All english, then half english, then the changes, then more changes... I'd do better with Star Spanglish Banner.

I am 52 and finished high school in 1981. I always remember the old O Canada verse with no god. I first heard it, oddly enough, on Hockey Night In Canada and I thought, "Oh, they changed it!" Not sure of the year but it would be early 80's.

July 2, 2016 @ 11:08 PM

Well, I never sang the God line in school. I won't sing it now. If I ever have to sing Oh Canada, I'll sing it my way leaving God out of it. Okay so Star-spangled Banner has more than one verse? Well, there's no God in the first verse. Oh, also in school, we used to sing God Save The Queen. Well, we eventually stopped singing it, but for years we had to sing it, I don't know why, but we did. It wasn't even our national anthem. Anyway, my Orioles lost again. No good. Indians lost as well. Rangers lost and believe it, they lost to the Twins. I sucked in the AL last night. I won everything in the NL. My Diamondbacks won. That's great with a homer by Wellington Castillo. Also the Braves won so maybe just maybe they are heating up. Pirates also won as well. Anyway, can I have six wins today. About this order thing, it really is fucked up. I wonder what the heck is going on. Anyway, a month or a month minus a day from now I have to go to the party room and get a fricken Rogers box or else I have to pay a rental fee every month directly to Rogers. I don't know why I have to do that, but I do. I hate Rogers. I wish it wasn't a part of my condo fee anyway. Cable is a luxury item. People who want it should pay for it themselves and I have been harping on that for years, but they say that we need it.

If your kid has the ability & skill to play sports for a living, encourage, support & finance them. The investment will pay off.

NHL free agency $149M
NBA free agency $1.7B

Note: not every kid can grow 6'6" >. But try.

@ Gee
Investment paying mega $ every year in a sport that your kid loves? You're kidding. If ability go for it. Seen it a few times with kids playing awesome hockey in GTHL, scouted by OHL teams & never get drafted.

You are a dreamer that a kids & parents dream is making a team any Major league sport.
Kids are scooped up before they are 8 or 9 in many sports as always "scouts" watching in any sport.
Of course encourage them to play on but hope fades very quickly as they get older. Less than 1% of players playing in Rep hockey in GTA will have a chance even being drafted by NHL.
Peter Holland has been the only person from Bolton (Caledon) to make it to NHL in a long time.
He was an acquaintance of both my sons & he still texts them.
Good Luck - Dreams Never Die.

People can complain all they want about free-agent salaries, but in the CBAs of both the NHL and NBA, the players are guaranteed 50% of league revenues, as it probably should be.

July 3, 2016 @ 7:53 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Rob J is correct. Salaries are tied to the league's revenue. Yes, it's big money, but it's all relative.

July 3, 2016 @ 8:05 PM

Some bullshit today from BlackLivesMatter. Pulling that was akin to Kanye West jumping in front of Taylor Swift on stage. At it's least it was disrespectful. They claim the parade has #antiblackness. Strange, I've gone to Pride and it was open to anyone.

Even the lead account of #Anonymous took them to task. #StayClassy douche bags.

July 3, 2016 @ 10:15 PM

Do I have to talk about baseball. I don't want to. Nothing good happened yesterday except the Pirates won and so I went one for six in my pool. My Orioles lost even though Mark Trumbo hit a home run. Indians lost. Rangers lost. My Diamondbacks lost. Braves lost, but Pirates won. I only got one win in my pool. My Orioles got swept this weekend. This is not good. They better start winning soon. Actually everyone better start winning.

July 4, 2016 @ 7:36 AM

I will keep the comments order as it's always been. The results of the survey weren't even close. Thanks to all who voted.

July 4, 2016 @ 8:22 AM

Irv - I couldn't believe that the blacklivesmatter folks would have the nerve to pull that nonsense right in the middle of the parade. Where were the cops/security? Why was it even allowed to happen? Had it been anyone else the cops would have been all over them in an instant had they done the same at pride but for some reason the Blacklivesmatter folks get a free pass from the police, media, city, et all.

And shame on the pride people for "agreeing" to their demands instead of just telling them to buzz off.

July 4, 2016 @ 9:23 AM

if you listened to the one of the parade organizers and consider the speed at which the 'demands" were signed...this was obviously planned...they provided a little show for the audience to emphasize that they were still a political movement

July 4, 2016 @ 3:08 PM

So some comments repeated. I repeated some stuff, but the web site or maybe Internet explorer was going crazy. Anyway, baseball was not good except for the Indians and Pirates winning. That was a good thing. Anyway, my Orioles and Diamondbacks both lost. Rangers and Braves also lost. I went 2 for 4 in my pool yesterday and this is not a good thing. Anyway, I got more junk mail from Rogers yesterday. It's about this thing in the party room on August 2. I don't want Rogers, but the thing is that if we don't get these box things, we're going to have to pay a bit to Rogers directly which is not right, but it has to happen. I don't even like TV anyway. I like my internet radio. I pay a very small amount to get any baseball broadcast I want, much less than going to the game. Oh well, the party room will probably be jam packed on August 2.

July 5, 2016 @ 7:35 AM

Gallagher would have been a great interview but the volume was all over the place and I had to turn it off- unfortunately. otherwise your podcasts are very good. keep up the great work!

July 5, 2016 @ 10:43 AM

Black Lives Matter pretty much self destructed over the weekend. Media is saying they're receiving a ton of hate mail and attacks. So we're supposed to feel sorry for you? They claim it's proof what they did is right. Guess what morons, when you're a fucking douche bag you deserve to get called out on it BAD names included. You pissed off a whole swath of the hacker world too, so enjoy your binary lake of fire.

Pro tip: Seeing you're worried about parades, maybe worry about your own parade. I don't see any gunfire, stabbings and random violence at Pride.

July 5, 2016 @ 9:44 PM

Rick C in Oakville

@Irv: to quote Christie Blatchford, they were invited into your house and they crapped on your rug.
Quite comical that the Pride rep has now rebuffed the agreement, maybe he had buyers remorse the next day. Glad it didn't turn into a shit show with the police having to drag the BLM's away, just would have put more fuel on the fire.

July 5, 2016 @ 10:45 PM

@Rick C

The sole reason they chose the #Pride Parade is because they knew they'd get the least resistance. Pride is notoriously not violent. They knew they could stop the parade & not get their asses kicked. It's like protesting at a 6 year old kids birthday party.

Imagine them trying this during a Latino parade or an Italian heritage parade. It'd be worthy of a Sopranos episode.

July 5, 2016 @ 11:15 PM

Orioles finally won a game yesterday. Chris Tillman got the win. He's a great pitcher and Manny Machado homered. My Diamondbacks won as well so that's a good thing. Indians also won really big. If my Orioles or Diamondbacks don't make the playoffs, I will probably go for the Indians in the playoffs, whether there is a playoff pool or not. Pirates also won last night, but Braves lost meaning that I won five games and lost one in my pool. Postal strike on Friday, guys. I have no sympathy for them. They're greedy. They want more and more. I don't like strikes of any kind. This means that there will be no junk mail from Rogers and Bell for a while, but then when the strike ends maybe in a few months from now, the junk mail will pile up so I wil have a whole box of junk mail from Rogers and Bell. They'll go out, you'll see because postal workers are so greedy. I hate strikes of any kind.

July 6, 2016 @ 8:56 AM

Well, how about those Orioles. That was a long game and two home runs by my favourite player. That was awesome. Mark Trumbo has 26 home runs. It was a long 14 inning game. I don't like extra inning games as they are too long. My Diamondbacks lost though even though Jake Lam had a home run. Indians got clobbered. They win big the day before and then get clobbered. This is not good for my pool and Rangers lost and Braves lost. This is not good. Anyway, so I got two pool wins with my Orioles and Pirates also won. Pirates are on a roll, good for my pool. Anyway, so postal strike tomorrow. They're greedy. They want the whole world. Oh well, so when it ends which will probably be in a few months, the junk mail from Rogers and Bell will all pile up.

July 7, 2016 @ 5:46 AM

Thankfully we have somewhat gun control in Canada.

July 7, 2016 @ 6:20 PM

Baton Rouge Police just had their servers hacked & 50 000 names, addresses & phone numbers released to the internet. Be assured it's like that Carpenters song "We've Only Just Begun".

I get that it's difficult to be a cop & even more difficult to be one in a place where you have the right to carry. Hey, people say "the police are militarized". Yeah, they are because the CIVILIANS are militarized. When a civilian can own a M4 with a 50 round clip police have the right to protect themselves.

But in too many of these cases it's clear to even a dense bystander too much force is used. The guy who was pinned down WAS a scumbag. Pull his record. He's nasty. But he was pinned down & that's no reason to shoot a guy 4 times. And the person pulled over told the cop he had the right to carry & that his wallet was in his back pocket. And he was shot.

I don't always think it's racism that plays a part in it but I definitely think there is a racist element in many of these aggressive take downs. Sometimes I think it's junior officers who aren't ready for such high stress moments. The right answer might be to not issue a weapon to a police officer until year two, but that ignores a reality few people understand. Police recruitment is very difficult in the past decade. There are fewer candidates & that stresses the entire force. There is a great book called Canadian Policing in the 21st Century by Robert Christmas. It's a good read on modern policing and the challenges they face. I think sometimes the anti police types should read it too. For example, those "anti cop" types wanted police officers in Toronto to have their name on their uniforms. That is the MOST WRONG idea ever. They have NO idea of the risk that puts them in. With a name organized crime cyber criminals can research who a cop is. They'll file fake charges against him. They're find him online & can harass & intimidate his family.

The fixes to all this are complex. Military reservists spend more time in combat & stress situation training than police do (One weekend a month and Wednesday for administrative training). But to give police that training means less officers out there working. And that's means a board light up like a Christmas tree & civilians screaming because it took a cop 40 minutes to arrive at a call where someone was trespassing.

But I agree, no gun control plays a big part of it. I'm a pro gun guy, but not THAT pro of a gun guy.
