Virgin 99.9 leads the way for M18-34 with a 12.2% share (up from 10.3%) followed by Indie 88.1 at 9.5%.

Congrats to Indie 88. This is remarkable because CFNY dumped Spirit of Radio Sundays to focus on the 18-34 demo. It's low powered competitor beat them.

Perhaps it's time for the directionless management at Corus to admit they're NOT winning the battle for youth anymore. The "heritage status" of CFNY only matters to radio nerds & older people. So use that with those older people and reinstate "Spirit of Radio everyday".

Indie beating CFNY is even more impressive when you compare the signal strength of the two stations. No comparison.

When Spirit of Radio Sundays got cancelled I once again 100% stopped listening. No point for me. Loved the way Scot Turner hosted and contextualised it. Otherwise I'm happy to do my own queuing + discovery. My musical taste for what it's worth: http://www.last.fm/user/greycellgreen

(Sidenote, Spotify Discover's algorithm is just incredible for me. The weekly playlists it generates know me shockingly well, even when I'd played all of three albums at the start.)

Count me in as a fan of Scot's Spirit of Radio Sunday show, but I'm way older than CFNY's target demo.

I often wonder why radio stations don't think there's any money in targeting guys like me. Many of us actually buy things!

Irv

Interesting is the daily CUME for the two stations when you look at the power of the two signals.

CFNY. 345,000
Indie 88 - 214,000

The situation with Jazz FM is just dismal. It has a lowest CUME in the entire ratings (excluding 1650 AM CINA a multicultural station). It's ratings are just awful. As a long time fan of Jazz (and a Sax player since Grade 7), this station needs to slowly move away from the "old white purist" Jazz shit & embrace some urban/black & multicultural jazz based music. Make the whole sound a little more cool & a little more "street".

Disappointed that no English Canadian broadcaster picked up the Copa America Centenario. Only place to watch the games is on Univision Canada (Spanish only) or streaming. For those unfamiliar with the tournament it is basically the Euros but consisting of teams from North and South America.

Speaking of which the Euros start today which will be great to have some soccer to watch during the days followed by Copa America at night.

I'm holding back negativity towards the Argos (as a TFC fan) about them starting their preseason at BMO field. I'm concerned about the field conditions and possible football lines being visible during soccer matches but am hoping the grounds crew can work their magic. If those 2 things are satisfied I believe most TFC fans will be fine with new tenants. If not, all hell will break loose.

In your guesstimation, who would win a fight between TFC supporters and Argos fans?

June 10, 2016 @ 9:09 AM

Wally

I am a biased TFC fan so I'll say TFC supporters.

Of course that's because I believe the average age of Argo fans are 50+ and in a fight may end up breaking a hip.

(In all honesty I think I have never in my life seen anybody wear an Argos jersey whereas I've seen many people of varying ages wear TFC jerseys. Of course this is all subjective)

I was in downtown Calgary last week in a set of office towers. I was counting the empty floors & about 35% of them were empty in one tower. Traffic is lighter. LInes are much smaller. But, I do know of a couple of energy companies who are doing well.

So should I assume that all is fine in the energy industry because 1 or 2 companies are doing well versus the overall state of things? You know, like in AM radio

PS. Its Steve Kowch. If he starred in radio porn, he'd be taking a load on the face from CFRB. He's hardly unbiased.

June 10, 2016 @ 9:17 AM

@markosaar interesting taste. I'll be having a closer look at some of those bands. I forgot i had an account on last.fm lol. i'll have to have a listen later.

BTW happy Birthday Mike , how did it go with the e-test?

June 10, 2016 @ 9:24 AM

Argie

CFRB 1010 will always rule the am dial in the morning. Always have, and likely always will.

A monkey could be hosting and they would still get good numbers. Moore is pretty vanilla which suits the listeners of that station fine. Its a miracle CBC hasn't hired him - he just seems sooo right for them.

I personally would still prefer to have Bill Carroll in that chair.

June 10, 2016 @ 9:25 AM

Irv

@Argie

Not really Argie, it went through some tough times a while back. More importantly said claim doesn't break down into demo's, especially demo's you can sell. 1010 is non existent in the 18-34 demo & it's not much better in the 25-54 demo. Does CFRB & Kowch image that those demo's are going to 'grow" into the station?

June 10, 2016 @ 9:30 AM

Argie

@Irv
Kowch isn't the PD there anymore. He's in Montreal at their sister station. Mike Bendixon (sp?) is their PD.

@James Edgar,

If you mention a few bands you're really into I'd be happy to suggest some stuff you might not have stumbled across.

I'd like to think I've explored all the reaches of "alternative rock", though I tend to favour electronic-tinged stuff. Blame a childhood of Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode and KMFDM heh.

June 10, 2016 @ 9:35 AM

@Irv,

Kowch was fired from 'RB, I doubt he'd have good feelings for them, he's just reminding them that he hired John Moore.

But BTW, it's awesome that Moore is the number 3 morning host, maybe Mike will have him on the podcast soon. ;)

June 10, 2016 @ 9:36 AM

Irv

@Argie

I know, I referenced Kowch because he's the one who posted the shill & ratings on SOWNY. Really my comment was directed at the guy "Anon" who claimed because 1010's morning show is doing well it's a clear sign AM radio isn't dying.

It's a station for older people. The problem with older people is that advertising agencies don't like them. Even if you got the numbers it's still a bitch to sell it.

I've heard rumors from trusted sources that even selling those Rogers 'AC' style stations is getting difficult. If they can't sell the whole medium is doomed. You watch starting in August. That's when the yearly purge of staff happens.

June 10, 2016 @ 9:40 AM

Irv

@Anon

In the world of radio you get fired from every job you have man. It's just how they do business. If Kowch is the PD of the 1010 sister station (as Argie says) I doubt he hates 1010.

I have zero respect for anyone that is a shill. It's on the same level as a politician, telling you the "truth" as they see it.

Indie88 vs. 102.1:
The transmitter power of each station is hardly comparable, as illustrated above. With FM, though, what really makes a difference for distance coverage and penetration is "Height Above Average Terrain". 88.1's 2.1 kW is at 281 m (922 ft.) HAAT. 102.1's 35.4 kW is coming from the top of the CN Tower at 421 m (1,381 ft.) HAAT. Combine the power with transmitter height and the comparison isn't even fair.

Regardless of what the ratings say, Indie88 punches above its power, so good on them.

I couldn't believe that not only nobody picked up Copa America, but that FoxSports still blacks out their streaming of the game to people who live in Canada, even though there are no rights holders here. Also their announcers are just horrible

As for TFC, I believe that that the quality of MLS soccer disgraces a soccer pitch more than CFL football lines and a bit of mud.

June 10, 2016 @ 11:33 AM

Wally

@Daniel

Apparently CTV holds the rights to Copa America but did nothing with it. Even their soccer personalities on twitter make no mention of the games or offer any opinions regarding the games.

Sure you can say quality of MLS soccer is a disgrace but that's because soccer is a global game and your comparing leagues from across the world. Also I find it funny you judge MLS quality yet make no mention of CFL quality vs NFL.

June 10, 2016 @ 11:58 AM

Douglas

@Wally
There is no fair way to compare "quality" of the CFL vs. NFL because the two can never again (since the mid-1970s) be even remotely compared with respect to the money available for, to and within the leagues. If the CFL could pay salaries comparable to the NFL, ticket prices would be ridiculously higher. Torontonians like to think the Buffalo experience could be transferable to Toronto, but Buffalo is near or at the bottom of the NFL for ticket prices. Put the NFL in Toronto and ticket prices would not be much lower than even the still-expensive cheapest that were offered for "Bills in Toronto" games. The stadium would fill for the first few years, then the novelty would wear off, money would be lost, the team would be sold and move. Don't forget that the NFL is all about TV revenue, too. So is MLB, which provides us with two solid parallels: The worst - consistently - ratings on American TV for baseball involve the Toronto Blue Jays. In the NBA? Raptors. American sports businesses want as little to with Canada as possible. Let's not even get into the NHL on that topic.

Want to saying something positive about Wynne *gasp*. I liked SOME of the initiative in the "green" package she put together.

1. Heating with electricity. From what I read most people imagine she's referring to baseboard heating like in those 70's townhouses. That stuff bankrupts you. They're referring to Geothermal. It's a series of pipes buried underground which transfer the natural ground heat, compress it and it heats your home. It's never ending (at least until the earths core cools..which will cause other issues). You can also cool your place with it. The temp of the ground is stable summer & winter. It's easy to install new homes, but retrofitting is a real bitch (and expensive). I've read repeated reports that in houses it cuts heating costs dramatically. It's commonplace in Michigan.

2. Electric car plugs in houses & condos. The Tesla Model 3 has taken nearly 500,000 orders. To put that into perspective the Honda Civic sells about 300,000 units per year in the USA. The car is mainstream. This will give the product the boost it needs. Even if a car isn't entirely electric & it's more like the Chevy Volt (EV with gas engine) it still makes sense. If you can do most of your around town stuff on electricity you save a shitload of money. At $0.10 a KWH (what I pay) it's 3 cents per mile. Think about that. The cost to drive from downtown Toronto to Kitchener-Waterloo would be about $1.80.

Donating your car to charity is a lovely idea. Just watch with respect to the tax receipt. Charitable donations are credits, not deductions. The after-tax value of the donation will vary depending on your taxable income and how much you give in total during the tax/calendar year.

For those of you who do your own tax returns (electronically or by paper), charitable donations go on Schedule 9 of your T1 General return. http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/5000-s9/5000-s9-15e.pdf

Of course, the above is a bit of a hassle. Thankfully, CRA has provided a Charitable donation tax credit calculator page on their website: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/chrts-gvng/dnrs/svngs/clmng1b2-eng.html

If your old car is your only receipted charitable donation during the year and your taxable income is between $50,000 and $100,000 in Ontario, your $300 donation works out to a tax credit of $80.26. If you donate $500, of which the car is $300, that $300 increases your charitable tax credit by $120.48.

Regardless of the above, donating your car to charity is good on many levels. Have some tissues handy for when finally say goodbye to it. Just in case.

Premier Orville Redenbaucher has completely lost it. This Climate Plan shows she is delirious for how else can u explain this nonsense. The Libs only know one thing & that is how to gouge the public.

Electric cars for everyone?? = high, high electricity costs. Ever notice how they tell us to conserve yet when ON Hydro's revenue falls due to this conservation , they go to the board to ask for a raise in rates & they get it every time.

Elimination of natural gas. This fuel was supposed to be & is cleaner than oil.

Like Theo Caldwell always says "climate change". Its like the house who recycles 100% & the other 100 houses in the neighbourhood don't. What about all that pollution from the US Rust Belt.

PC made a big mistake in electing Brown, Christine Eliot was the right person for this time. Who knows what happens next.

June 11, 2016 @ 4:16 PM

Irv

@JJ

I disagree. This energy bill is actually the only intelligent thing Wynne has ever done. She's looking forward in the future. A few points

1. The increase of your electrical rates (which are still cheaper than Alberta) is due to the decommissioning of coal fired electricity generation. This was a liberal election promise. It was supposed to happen by 2007. It took 6 more years. Result: Far few smog days & air particulate.

2. Electric cars for everyone? Why not. Nexen did a study years ago showing that they could produce enough power for all of North American just by using wind turbines in the Great Lakes. Perhaps when Easterners get over the whole "spoiled view" shit, it might happen. The only real limitation is rare earth elements like lithium for batteries. San Francisco is asking all new buildings have solar panels. Once this becomes the norm the result will be ample power for cars & a decentralization of the grid. The only people against this are the power companies.

3. Natural gas IS cleaner than oil, but oil isn't used for power generation and rarely for heating (because it burns dirty) . Further, almost all the reserves of Nat Gas in North America need to be fracked. We all know how the world feels about fracking.

4. Many countries are adopting renewable power sources. Germany & Chile recently produced so much renewable power they had to give it away.

5. Electric heat: Again, this isn't baseboard heating, it's Geothermal. That's WAY more energy efficient than natural gas. I lived in a condo with Geothermal. It also cools your house too.

Oil prices have doubled in the past year. The much taunted "over supply" was the result of elevated prices which spurred on a massive amount of fracking. US oil production soared because of it and a resulting glut happened. But fracked wells have about a 3 year life span. Once those wells go, we need to ramp up production again. Because of the major recession in oil, there has been so much pull back you'll probably see oil prices go higher than in 2008. Do ramp up production, you need higher oil prices.

Ontario is a net importer of oil. Every day it imports about 1.2 million barrels of oil. Almost all that oil comes from foreign sources. At $100.00 a barrel that amounts to $120 million dollars A DAY that leaves Ontario. In a single year that's $43 billion dollars that leaves Ontario & lands in the hands of rogue nations (mostly). There is almost no Alberta oil in Ontario. If you produced all your own energy needs you could keep all that money & pay off your massive debt. It's just good economic sense to get off the Ferris Wheel of oil & gas.

Finally, lest you believe I'm a Greenpeace hippie bike riding type. I'm not. But if you stand just south of Downtown Calgary & look at all the oil and gas company logos on the office tower there is a good chance I did some type of work in most of those companies, fracking stuff too.

PS. The largest producer of oil in the world right now is Russia. Russia is currently producing more oil than Saudi is. But Russians push their wells too hard & doing so causes rapid depletion & destruction of the well. It's not just a tap in the ground. The Saudi's maintain their production by a 60 year old oil field named Ghawar. To pressurize the well they pump sea water into the wells. Waterflooding/water injection is destructive. You get to a point where the water mix is so high the well is useless.

The minute those two providers go into rapid depletion, it's #GAMEOVER. And they will decline. In 1999 North Sea crude production was 6 million BPD. Today it's 1/3 of that. Over half the known reserves are gone.

The "glut" is temporary. Electricity is endless.

I think if you gave a batch of episodes a chance, like tried about ~3, you'd enjoy Trailer Park Boys. As Maddog says, it is filthy, and gives a bad impression if you're only aware of it superficially. Under that layer of grime is a lot of heart, like any stereotypical Canadian TV show heh.

I think the first 6 seasons are easy to recommend and great watching. The first Netflix season was fantastic and I was so happy it was back, but I feel like it's possibly time to throw in the towel. I've been going through the 10th now, and can't binge it like most Netflix shows ... finding it very uncomfortable to watch. I hope there's a great pay-off by the end.

My Orioles lost yesterday. That was no good. Even with all the home runs, my Orioles lost. It was not a good game. Home runs were two by Adam Jones, Pedro Alvarez and Manny Machado. Robby Ray got a shutout which is great. Hopefully that means he will pitch better from now on. Anyway, I want my money. Go Cavs. Please win three more games. That's all I ask.
