Just watched the last 10 minutes of Canada AM. You wouldn't have known it's a four decade old show. All the highlights seemed to feature the current hosts.

June 3, 2016 @ 9:07 AM

Royal Arse

On Prime Time Sports with Bob McCown:

He used to emphatically deny that the suits at Rogers influenced his guests. Obviously this is no longer the case. It appears the guests are far more homogenized than before. Rogers scribes and talking heads are elbowing out non-Rogers folks.

I think this is sucking the energy out of Bob and killing the show. Maybe this is because Ryan Walsh (a good potential TO Mike get) left and the new producer is lazy?? Has Bob just completely given up? Either way I'm listening to more OverDrive these days.

June 3, 2016 @ 9:25 AM

Sam - I made the same note in the "Canada AM canceled" post about the show ignoring all but the current hosts so I'm happy to at least see I'm not the only one who noticed that. Maybe it's a rights issue to the older material for CTV/Bell? No idea but it felt really half-hearted and almost ego stroking to the current hosts as opposed to remembering and recalling the shows long history.

Royal Arse - It's been reported on several site's that Bob has essentially checked out and is just riding out his contract at this point so I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the producers/The Fan/Rogers/ et all has decided to just use his show as a promotional arm for their other properties as the prepare for life without him. It could also explain why the recent Friday Round Tables have been stacked with "Friends of Bob" instead of a mix of people like they had in the past.

June 3, 2016 @ 9:34 AM

In a typical week on PTS you will hear from: Healy, Devlin, Buck, Siddall, Hughson, Jones, Davidi, Arash, Shannon, and Shulman. At least 80% of the voices are Rogers employees. It's turning into a big echo-chamber with recycled opinions swirling around the airwaves. It's almost jarring to hear Dave Perkins on the roundtable...a guy who will actually criticize the teams and the media swooning.

June 3, 2016 @ 9:38 AM

@ Royal Arse

I've been a fan of Bob McCown as long as I can remember, but to be honest, he's been phoning it in for some time. He arguably started phoning it in about the time he stopped LITERALLY phoning it in (when the made him start doing the show in Toronto all the time, instead of spending part of the year broadcasting from his home in Las Vegas). Somehow he's seemed lacklustre since.

He's had a number of embarrassing on-air gaffs that showed he really doesn't pay much attention to sports anymore -- even sports he's passionate about. He's a baseball guy, but two or three times has forgotten who plays where. (Asked Pat Gillick about the Phillies hot prospect Anthony Gose ... who was with the Tigers and had not been with the Phillies in over five years. Not long ago he was talking about whether the Jays would rush Jeff Hoffman to the majors -- Hoffman, of course, was traded last year as part of the Tulo deal.) He's kinda half there.

But yeah, Rogers people are getting a lot of PTS time. There actually seems to be a bit of a Rogers clique, with these guys scratching each other's back until the cows come home. I know nothing about the people who run Pitch Talks, but it has become noticeably more dominated by Rogers personalities over the last year. There's a group that seems to travel in packs.

June 3, 2016 @ 9:42 AM

James Edgar

Agreed the Bob is phoning it in at least a part of the time. Okay most of the time.

One thing i noticed is that when TSN started on 1050 the TSN people who used to phone in regularly all stopped immediately . That kind of cuts out half the journalists in canada does it not? And also explains why so many sportsnet people are on so often. Not to mention how big there hockey department must be.

June 3, 2016 @ 9:55 AM

I agree with you guys. To me Bob is at his best when he's talking/Interviewing sports illustrated people, Rob Becker and independent legal and sports business people

The Rogers cronies just promote rogers their projects and the whole show loses its independent opinion/journalism feel.

I agree Bobs probably checked out, he probable checked out after Rogers threw Tim and Sid on TV to compete with him, basically earmarking them as his replacement.

June 3, 2016 @ 9:57 AM

I organized a giant "Goodbye Canada AM" party for today. We were all saddened to find out that "CANADA" AM hasn't been available in half of Canada for years. I guess I missed all the outrage when it was cancelled out here.

June 3, 2016 @ 10:13 AM

Well, how about those Orioles. That was great that they won this game although pitching did fall apart. Mark Trumbo hit two home runs. He is really a great player. Also Adam Jones hit a couple and Manny Machado hit one. That's so great. My Diamondbacks won as well as Zach Greinke wins again. He's a great pitcher. I don't really want to talk about basketball. My Cavs got beat. It's not a good thing. It is only game one though and they will win four and win this. They have to. I need the money. I don't want it to go to this other guy. I want the money so go Cavs. They are going to win the next four.

Al The Royal Pain

Did anyone hear the interview McCown did with Bettman yesterday? My god! I though Bob was going to propose to Gary on the air. It was such a love-in...which is in stark contrast to the way they were with each-other pre-Rogers/NHL deal. Bob wouldn't have Bettman on his show at all, and he wasted no opportunity to criticizie him.

June 3, 2016 @ 10:49 AM

@Al The Royal Pain

As Ron MacLean told me himself, when you're critical of Gary Bettman and you work for Rogers Media, there will be ramifications.

June 3, 2016 @ 10:51 AM

Which is why you always have a basis to question the journalistic integrity of sports radio stations and television stations. If you speak the truth, and the truth happens to be negative, you are silenced. But Bob was always the exception, and that's what made him special. Until now

A big sign things are different now is Brunt's PR piece on Shapiro.

June 3, 2016 @ 11:01 AM

RE: Canada AM ... Yeah, there was very little about anything prior to the current hosts, which was a shame. It's been an institution for 43 years, not 12. In fairness, I don't think they had a lot of time to prepare. I think the people on the show only found out after yesterday's broadcasts, and no one who works on the show predates the current hosts, as far as I know. So, they were scrambling for a finale.

(Now, it's possible they knew before then, but they could not have known for very long. As recently as a couple of days ago they were talking about Hutcheson's last day being June 17, so clearly they thought the show would at least be around until then.)

I guess this is another reason I wish CTV hadn't been so abrupt. It wasn't a proper sendoff for a 43-year-old program.

June 3, 2016 @ 11:03 AM

Ryan G

There was a pretty big lineup waiting for the elevator at work today. There's a tv on the wall where the elevators are, which is always tuned to cp24. The 20 or so people are sort of forced to watch it for a few minutes until the elevator arrives, unless they look at their phones or something. The segment was one of their hosts doing a live remote at a ballet school of some sort, and the guy was doing his best to be funny and entertaining by attempting pirouettes and such. It was typical painful morning show awkwardness, and out of curiousity i looked behind me to the now 25 people or so in line. All eyes were on the tv, and all those eyes told me that every one of those people were feeling the same cringe I was experiencing.

Perhaps this tiny sample size doesn't make it statistically significant, but perhaps another reason why morning tv shows are going extinct.

June 3, 2016 @ 11:12 AM

Exactly! The audience to watch nonsense like that is dwindling (which can't be a bad thing, really). Thus, shows like Canada Am will have to change or simply drift off into the sunset.

June 3, 2016 @ 11:18 AM

@Toronto Mike

I heard that it was awkwardly biased, and looked pretty self serving. Is it worth watching?

June 3, 2016 @ 11:22 AM

Al The Royal Pain

Yes, I agree that Betman loves to wield his power wherever possible, the SMS (Short Man's Syndrome) is alive and well with him. I guess I always believed/hoped that Bob was above all that...but you're right, Brunt's "Essay" was proof that no one is above Roger's power.

I kind of wish these journalists of "integrity" would just opt to go on their own via podcast or blog or something, but we've all seen that anyone that attempts to do that is made out to be a pariah (see: Howard Berger, Steve Simmons and...perhaps to a lesser extent Mark Hebscher).

June 3, 2016 @ 11:23 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I'll summarize Brunt's piece on Shapiro.

- it's not his fault AA left
- he did some good things in Cleveland
- his kids love him very much
- Toronto should give him a chance

June 3, 2016 @ 11:25 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Al The Royal Pain

Simmons isn't out on his own. He's still at The Sun and on TSN regularly. Berger and Hebsy are on their own because they were fired from MSM gigs.

The fact is, putting your kids through university and living a good standard of life is expensive, and going out on your own is rarely lucrative.

June 3, 2016 @ 11:27 AM

@ Toronto Mike

I haven't seen the Brunt interview, but all of that is actually true. (Well, I can't speak for his kids.)

AA leaving likely had nothing to do with Shapiro. Prior to the trade deadline he'd determined it would be his last season -- and not because of who would be president. AA knew he was out of a job if the team missed the playoffs, but to make the playoffs he needed to create some major issues going forward, and I don't think he wanted to deal with the aftermath of what he needed to do. (Currently, the Jays have a one-year window of opportunity, after which things get very dicey. I don't think AA wanted to have to deal with that.)

Shapiro did do some good things in Cleveland. The problem was that every time they were building a team that could (and sometimes did) contend his payroll was slashed. They operated with the lowest or second lowest payroll in their division almost every year.

And should Toronto give him a chance? Well, unless we think you can properly evaluate a team president based on a few months on the job, yes. And let's be fair: he actually has done some pretty good things so far. (Adding depth, etc.) The biggest complaint people have now is that he hired two guys he'd worked with before for the front office ... which is a complaint made by people who obviously have never observed how baseball front office hirings are done. AA did the same thing to a much larger degree as GM.

June 3, 2016 @ 11:33 AM

Al The Royal Pain

Mike, I'm aware of Simmons, for him, I was more referring to how he's treated by such vitriol by those members of the (mostly the Roger's) media...and of course Twitter.

Bobcat and pts: I do agree the show isn't what it was and that Bobcat is just waiting for the end of his contract, and yes that Gary Bettman interview yesterday was hard to listen to. But over all I still listen to the show and still enjoy it.

Definitely looking forward to the Jeff Woods podcast.

Muhammad Ali is and was a great human being. A great sportsman. A great humanitarian. A great voice of conscience. Check out his fights on YouTube. Check out his political reasoning also. Ali the powerhouse in more ways than one.

June 3, 2016 @ 10:13 PM

Your words are much better than mine.
We've lost too many Icons in their genre so far this year.

June 3, 2016 @ 10:22 PM

Just one quick note on Canada AM. Older material from the Norm Perry and Dan Matheson eras was shown on the 40th anniversary show in 2013. So, it was likely a lack of notice that caused the final show to appear to be a celebration of the current hosts.

June 4, 2016 @ 4:06 AM

My Orioles won again, but it was a squeaker. They won 6 to 5 and Chris Davis got a home run. He hasn't hit one in a long time. Chris Tillman didn't pitch very well though, but the pen won again so that's another win for my Orioles. My Diamondbacks lost. In fact they got shut out. I don't know why they have to keep losing. Anyway, so my Cavs don't play until tomorrow night. They have to turn it around and win. Put the first game behind them and win. I want my money. The Cavs will win in five or six. It's their time to do it.

June 4, 2016 @ 5:53 AM

Thank you Toronto for driving Kessel out of town. The Cup is close.

June 4, 2016 @ 11:00 AM

From the sounds of it, the "replacement" for Canada AM is likely to be a simple rebranding. New name, new hosts, and probably a lot of changes.

So, in a way, that weird focus on the current hosts might make sense; the show will continue in an altered format; they're just firing the hosts. Maybe it really was a goodbye for them.

June 4, 2016 @ 1:14 PM

I get the outrage at getting ripped off for Tragically Hip tickets by scalpers, but if the prices are too high, don't pay it. It's not like it's food or your mortgage, it's a concert. If you're paying $1500 bucks for a Tragically Hip ticket fundamentally you're no different than one of those friends that sends money to some online religious show to be saved by Jesus.

June 4, 2016 @ 1:44 PM

This is a complete travesty & a Joke with the sale of Hip tickets.

I'm predicting CBC will televise their last concert & for all of you that paid Xtra $ to see 1 of their last concerts, good for U.

Are u a Hipster Dufus Chris?

Funny u mentioned the CBC, go read the article by Frank Magazine entitiled Another Graveside Attraction at the CBC. Its something that u probably would put under your rock.

June 4, 2016 @ 4:45 PM

Check out what HTZ FM Jesse Modz pulled on a scalper.

June 4, 2016 @ 8:34 PM

My Orioles lost again. They were losing 7 to 0, but then apparently came back. I had a computer crash last night during the game, took a while to reboot, but they came back, but lost 8 to 6. too bad as my favourite player, Mark Trumbo hhit his 18th homer and I missed it because of the crash. My Diamondbacks also lost earlier, but Jake Lam and yaasmani Tomas both had homers, still a loss though. My Cavs will win today. I need them to. I want my Money. Otherwise the other guy will get it, someone who doesn't even live here who I don't know at all. Cavs can do it so do it.

June 5, 2016 @ 6:05 AM

Mike - another jinx with your tweet - 6 outs to go & then over the monster by BSox.
Estrada was great, & nailbiter until final out.
Many times you are commenting about shutouts, wins for all TO teams & in most cases after comment or tweet, what happens everything falls apart & done.

Please No more comments when a game is for the record books.

June 5, 2016 @ 8:18 PM

CTV announced their new morning that is going to replace Canada AM earlier today, dubbing it "Your Morning", with Anne Marie Mediwake from CBC and Ben Mulroney as hosts.

June 6, 2016 @ 10:18 AM

Well, my Orioles won yesterday. That's great. They were losing 1 to 0 until the seventh inning when there was a rain delay and then they had to stop. They ended up winning 3 to 1. That's great and my Diamondbacks won 3 to 2 with Jake Arrieta, one of the best pitchers on the Cubs finally getting a loss. I don't want to talk about basketball. My Cavs lost and they lost big. Why can't they win anymore? I want that money, but this other jerk is going to win. Well, maybe I shouldn't call him a jerk because I never even met him yet, but he's going to win the money unless my Cavs can find a way to come back. Well, they're at homeo the next two so if they can win at home, that would be great and then win one on the road and another at home and they will get it. Also Kevin Love has a concussion which isn't good at all. The Warriors are a dirty team. It's no good. The refs are favouring the Warriors. I really need my Cavs to win.

@ ALL:

I received a phone call earlier today from a local phone # & answered it. It was from a person who was moved to Canada from Syria as a refugee. Her english was broken but I could understand. She was asking for a donation for her family for their moving forward in living in Canada. I almost PUKED but kept listening. "Our family needs more $ to live here".

You're kidding?? Canada accepts these people & move them into residences & then pays them after they get established.

June 7, 2016 @ 8:16 AM

My Orioles won last night. This is great. Pitching was good on both sides though, but Mike Wright finally got a win. Homers were by my favourite player, Mark Trumbo as well as Manny Machado and Matt Wieters. Mark Trumbo has 19 home runs and is leading in home runs. He's going to have 40 or 50 by the end of the season. He's the best. My Diamondbacks lost again though after beating Jake Arrieta. Anyway, I need my Cavs to win. They better win tomorrow. The Warriors are a dirty team who the refs favour. Turns out Kevin Love does not have a concussion, thank goodness, but he could have. The refs just let him lie there. He got knocked down. Anyway, I need my Cavs to win. I want the money. They will win the next four games. I don't know why my Cavs had to get clobbered on Sunday night.

June 7, 2016 @ 10:01 AM

June 7, 2016 @ 11:15 AM

I'm having those "holy shit" moments lately when I'm realising some of my absolute favourite "new album discoveries" in music are around 10 years old now.

It really puts perspective on ageing and how relative time feels to me. I just remember starting to get into music around 1995 as a massive obsession, and back then an album from 1985 would have felt (and sounded) like ANCIENT HISTORY, even though I came to appreciate shitloads of older music soon.

June 7, 2016 @ 12:03 PM

@ Mike

You didn't tweet in 1992 and 1993 and therefore that proves you are a jinx when you tweet. I watched that game on Sunday and I could see Estrada's body language change when your tweet was posted.
Stop it, Mike. 140 or less characters posted into the internet obviously has the ability to change what is happening in Boston and around the world. Who needs things like evidence and science and common sense to prove that a jinx exists?

June 7, 2016 @ 12:19 PM

June 7, 2016 @ 7:58 PM

Well, my Orioles win again 9 to 1. There was a big brawl though. So Manny Machado gets hit by a pitch and then Manny throws his helmet and his bat. That's not like him though so have no idea why he did that so Ventura and Machado both get ejected. Mark Trumbo also said something, but thank goodness he didn't get ejected because he is my favourite player. Anyway, Mark Trumbo hit his 20th homer last night and he is leading in home runs. That's because he is the best. Chris Davis also hit one and so did Adam Jones. My Diamondbacks also won last night. Zach Griinke again wins another one. I really like him. Also Paul Goldschmidt hit a home run and so did Jake Lam. Anyway, my Cavs will win tonight. I need my money. I need them to win and so let's do it. I really don't like the Warriors.

June 8, 2016 @ 10:20 AM

For those who haven't seen twitter tonight it seems Ann Rohmer is back on CP24. Maybe when the time comes for her 3rd retirement it will stick.

June 8, 2016 @ 9:39 PM

How about those Cavs. That was a great game. Now if only they can win three more, that would be so wonderful. I need to win this pool. It's either me who wins it or it's this other guy. I need to win it so I hope my Cavs can continue to play like they know how to play and win three more games. My Orioles won as well. Machado was still playing so he didn't get suspended and I sure hope he doesn't. Chris Tillman pitched an awesome game last night. He's great. My Diamondbacks lost again though which is not good.
