Gordie Howe, Dead at 88

Gordie HoweGordie Howe was 88. Mr. Hockey's career record of 1,850 points over his 26 year NHL stood until it was broken by Wayne Gretzky in 1989.

Here's a wonderful story about the Great Gordie Howe.

Growing up as a hockey-loving boy in Winnipeg, I was fortunate to see the great Gordie Howe play I don't know how many times against my Jets. Prior to the Jets, I only knew him from watching Hockey Night in Canada when the Red Wings were playing in Toronto or Montréal. No matter where he played, no matter what age he was at, he gave all that he had. He never "dogged" it, and would chew out teammates who weren't giving their all.

One memory that comes up on a regular basis is a game film clip that I saw of him getting hassled all game by the opponent's "goon". I can't remember who the guy is. The refs were letting the irritation build until Howe had finally had enough. Howe reportedly said to the guy something like "OK, you really want to do this? Let's go." The refs cleared the ice and the gloves came off. Guess who flinched. It wasn't Howe. Not a punch was thrown. Respect all over the ice.

I never had the opportunity to meet Howe in person. I "settled" for seeing Bobby Hull and other Jets on numerous occasions. Somewhere in my basement, along with accumulations of hockey cards and Power Players (who remembers those!?), I have a hockey book written by Gordie Howe. I'm going to have to go look for it.

There was Mr. Hockey, The Great One & The Magnificent One.
All are worthy of the nicknames but Mr. Hockey was the best.
R.I.P. Mr. Howe (Blinky)

Blind Dave

I only had a few years of memories (born in 1963) of Gordie Howe in an era of three tv channels and no sports stations.

RIP, Gordie. I'm sure the first thing you did was kiss Colleen.
