So how about those Blue Jays?

Speaking of Fergie Olver, here's a taste of him on a CTV Jays telecast in the very early 90s.

I'm not first. Oh well, I can't be first all the time. It doesn't matter if I am or not. How about those Cavs. Don't you just love the Cavs? Great win and two more to go and they're out of this round. Then they have the Warriors to beat and then I win my money, $100.00. It's great. My Orioles didn't do so well though. They lost and that sucks, but hopefully they will win today. They're on the west coast though so the games tonight and tomorrow will be very late. Anyway, my Diamondbacks didn't play yesterday. Anyway, so go Cavs. They're awesome.

That clip brings back memories. I forgot about that cheesy opening music and graphics with the bouncing baseballs. I believe that was Tony Kubek's last season doing colour commentary for the Blue Jays; Tommy Hutton would replace him.

Don Chevrier was a great broadcaster as well. I miss his signature: "You're watching Labatt's Blue Jays baseball, on CTV*."

*ONT, Baton Sports, BBS, CBC, etc.

Fergie seemed to disappear once TSN replaced Olver with Jim Hughson on play-by-play. If memory serves, Rod Black took over the CTV broadcasts and Brian Williams for CBC. By that time, Fergie was no longer with CFTO doing sports and "Just Like Mom" was off the air.

Being a glass half full kind of guy, the one positive I see in this Raptors debacle is that we only have to put up with Drake for a few more days.

Re: Tony Kubek
Was the best broadcaster/analyst of baseball in my opinion. Yes he talked non-stop but we leaned so much about the game from him.

I loved Don Chevrier.

In my legendary thinkpiece from February entitled Why Raptors Fans are Showing Restraint I wrote the following:

"Winning one round is essential, but it's going to take at least two to satisfy fans."

We've done that. This is as far as this train goes. The Cavs are much better, well rested and hungrier. LeBron's not losing to the Raps.... he might not lose a game.

I've enjoyed this season, we've made progress, but we're just the second best team in the East, and there's a pretty big gap between #1 and #2.

Chevrier and Kubek were a great team that doesn't get a lot of props these days. Chevrier was terrible when he started calling games, but that was due to lack of experience. You can find the first Jays' game on YouTube, and he's dreadful. I think he'd only ever called one or two Expos games prior to that, so baseball wasn't his thing.

But he got very good as time went by, and Kubek, I think, helped to make him even better.

Fergie ... was not for all tastes. But he did show Buck Martinez the ropes during the brief period when Fergie did play-by-play and Buck was a budding colour commentator. It's easy to forget nowadays, with Buck blundering his way through play-by-play, but he was a very good colour commentator.

History has not been kind to Fergie. Someone packaged together clips from Just Like Mom of Fergie greeting the daughters with kisses on the lips. That's a shtick you could do in the 70s and 80s and people thought it was sweet, but modern sensibilities find it icky. (Even though I grew up in the 70s, I watched the video wondering why we ever thought that was okay.)

Love clips of old baseball broadcast intros...my fave is NBC's 1980s World Series theme which would be soon followed by Vin Scully and Joe Garagiola's call

I used to watch This Week in Baseball with Mel Allen every Saturday.

I also watched TWIB with Mel Allen every Saturday. I loved that show.

Btw, someone just tweeted this at me. It's an 80s bat flip.

May 20, 2016 @ 9:58 AM

Elephant

Yeah, the notion that bat flips are a new thing isn't quite accurate. Guys have flipped bats as long as I can remember. It might happen a bit more often nowadays, but it happened, and not just in big games. It was seen as a hot-dog move but people brushed it off. I don't recall a pitcher ever throwing at a guy for flipping his bat, and I certainly don't recall a player physically assaulting someone.

TWIB was a great show. As a teen, I did not miss an episode.

May 20, 2016 @ 10:28 AM

Elephant

Rejoice, TWIB fans, because if you go to YouTube and search for "This Week in Baseball," there are all sorts of episodes there. I've watched several of them -- it's a hoot seeing the old uniforms and being reminded of mid-level players you'd forgotten about.

May 20, 2016 @ 10:35 AM

Sid_V

TWIB with Mel Allen was a huge reason I started to love baseball. His voice was incomparable. "Lenny Randall finds the handle!" On an amazing infield play - how many years ago was that call? I still remember it, along with the weekly (seems like) highlights of the Wizard, Ozzie Smith.

Not too many Jays highlights back then.

May 20, 2016 @ 11:09 AM

Sid_V

I looked it up - Lenny Randle played one season for the Mets in 1978, so it is going on 37 friggin' years that I remember that call. Think of the great things that part of my brain could gave been used for if it wasn't remembering a Lenny Randle highlight play. LOL

My dad always referred to Fergie as, "Kubek's Rube."

I miss Catelli Bat Day, the Cadillac of giveaway days.

Fergie Olver's best work would have been for his solid run as the host of "Just Like Mom".

Me too. I had a buddy who appeared on the show. He still has a VHS of it. It's hilarious!

TSN is televising all Marlie games. Watching, Marlies take 1-0 lead, take the dog for a walk & 3-1 for Hershey when I get back. Such is life with Toronto teams in playoffs.
Raptors losing 2 games to nada outplayed big time. A series whereby 4 games win - the Raps will LOSE IN 3. LeBron is a Force & the best in the NBA now, but not the best ever. Jordan, Bird & Wilt the Stilt were better in their careers.
Go Canada Go tomorrow vs. U.S. in WHC & a trip to the final.

A hope & a Prayer for the Marlies.

How about those Orioles. Another win for them 9 to 4. Mychal Givens got the win. Home runs by my favourite, Mark Trumbo, also by Chris Davis, Manny Machado and Joey Rickard. My Diamondbacks also won. Good way to start a road trip. Brandon Drury hit another homer. He is so awesome. Now Cavs will win tonight. Cavs in four hopefully, maybe five, but I hope no game six or seven. They need to keep on winning and then beat the Warriors and I get my money. I like Lebron now.

@dale

I was toggling between the Marlies, Jays and Penguins. I actually think the Marlies will win the series. We're only down 1-0.

LeBron's not done yet... I'd say he's already better than Bird. I didn't see Wilt play, but I saw most of Bird and just about all of Jordan. Let's see where LeBron ends up when he's done. He's damn good.

Some awesome hot days out here but we are heading for a cool spell next week. Oh well, I'm loving it while I've got it!

TWIB was a great show and I built my Saturday afternoons around it. Mel Allen had the perfect voice for baseball and he was so knowledgeable and entertaining. Loved that music too!

@Blind Dave

Snowfall warning here (20 cms). The cold is on it's way. The cold and snow/rain should help the forest fires across BC.

I think the success of the Raptors is going to be good for the team long term. That, along with Drake constantly pimping the city, makes Toronto out to be a good destination if you're a black athlete. You get the benefits of a major city without the rampant gang violence of a place like Chicago. It may make a few more guys open to playing in Toronto.

Message to Shapiro:

Fire the batting coach & if that don't help, then u got to fire Gibby. Something has got to be done to shake this team up. No hitting, horrendous bullpen. This aint 2015, new year new season, cant live in the past.

The Twins are one of the worst teams in the majors(ATL 2nd) & u put up 2 runs?

How about those Orioles. Another win for them. Matt Wieters hits a home run again. Brad Brach winningi pitcher. My Orioles are a great team. My diamondbacks didn't do so well though. I don't want to talk about the basketball game. It really sucked. Cavs will win on Monday though. I don't know why they just couldn't win last night. It was an awful awful game.

What a great day today at the ballpark. My team The Bell Bombers had a double header. The first game was against Growcerway Gatway. The game was delayed in starting by 20 minutes cause Gateway forgot to bring their team bats after a while we decided to share our bats with them.we killed them 11-0 they were sore losers, they said they lost cause they did not have their team bats and thay HAD to use ours.Crybabies
After a hour and a half break we had to many beers, but it was ok cause we played Telus.Anyways they stink we could have had more beers. We beet them 17-1 in just 5 innings. The wholeteam worked in customer service which is good cause they are rotton ball players.
The best part of the day was that Phil our team manager made it to both games cause he knows how to drive anyways.

RIP Cindy Nicolas a marathon swimmer from Canada who 19 times & twice back to back swam the English Channel. She still is the youngest swimmer to cross Lake Ont. At 58 gone far too short a lifetime.
@ Karen you must have had 2 many beers as you're writing like our beloved Sports day to day person - Cheryl.

Canada wins Gold at WHC for 2nd year in a row.

Enjoy the rest of this weekend everybody.

My Orioles lost. That was no good losing 10 to 2 yesterday, but my Diamondbacks won. Good that Zach Grienke is winning now. He didn't start the season so well. My Cavs better win tonight. I really really need my Cavs to step it up, bounce back and win, but Dahntay Jones got suspended one game. He shouldn't have gotten suspended, but the fricken NBA decided to do that. Hopefully they can win without him. He doesn't play much anyway. Go Cavs. I really really need you to win.

May 23, 2016 @ 10:52 AM

Cheryl

My Cavs lost. This sucks again. Why are my Cavs falling apart. Why is this happening. This is no good at all. If they lose tomorrow, they're almost done. I didn't expect this. Anywayway, my Orioles and Diamondbacks didn't play last night. That means they couldn't lose. My Cavs losing was bad enough. Why is this happening. I don't like it.

Terrible news about Gord Downie (terminal cancer): http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/gord-downie-cancer-1.3596839

Never been a huge Hip fan, but their mark and presence is undeniable. (I probably felt like I simply got enough from the radio ... much like Nirvana.)

My Orioles and Diamondbacks both lost. What a shame. My Orioles could have won as Chris Tillman pitched a good game, but they weren't hitting. My Diamondbacks really got blown out. Anyway, go Cavs. Please win this one tonight. I really really need this. Why are my Cavs falling apart? It's not good. They really really need this. Go Cavs.

May 25, 2016 @ 9:39 PM

Cheryl

Well, how about those Cavs. They played great. Now if they could only play great in Toronto, that would be great. Come on Cavs. Please win tomorrow. My Orioles and Diamondbacks both lost so baseball wasn't very good today. Anyway, hot weather again. We have summer. I don't mind as long as I don't have to do any strenuous workout in it or anything. At least no snow to worry about.
