Thinking about those in Fort Mac. For perspective, here's the fire if it were in Toronto.

I can't wait to hear what Cheryl thought of last night's Raptors game.

May 6, 2016 @ 8:14 AM

Cheryl

So I'm not first. Doesn't matter. I don't care if I am first or not. I probably won't be first very often. Anyway, this had to happen on Bob Seger's birthday. No, Bob Seger is still alive, thank goodness, but a really good friend of mine had his mother pass away yesterday just like that. He's devastated. It's understandable. I'm really sad for him, that's for sure. She was only 70. Anyway, sucks that the Heat lost. Oh well, they'll win again in a couple days. Cavs will win tonight. Cavs are the champions anyway so that's great. Cavs are winning it all. My Orioles won. It was only 1 to 0 in the 10th with a walk off. My Diamondbacks didn't do well though. They lost.

Amazing job by the emergency crews and the people of Fort Mac for evacuating 88,000 people and no one was injured.

I hate to break it to you, but the Cavs are not the champions.

In fact, the Cavs have never won the NBA Championship.

Let Fort Mac Burn quickly and Fast

Fort Mac should burn and burn quickly.Hope the fire stays for another 2 months

Most Canadians know and what it to burn because it does not represent the true Canadians

Fort Mac represents greed, selfishiness and corruption

High school drop outs were earning $150,000 while the rest of us were in skilled jobs that paid much less
Remember people, Karma will always get u.What goes up quickly will eventually come down quickly
IF i had Kerosene, i would rush there and inflame more flames.Greed and nothing but Greed

What a courageous comment from someone so anonymous. I dare you to sign your real name to that.

I also see you're the same commenter who posts several anti-Chinese comments a day on the Jennifer Valentyne entry. I'll just keep deleting and blocking your IP until you get bored of this nonsense.

Seriously??? You are jealous of people working hard to attempt to better their lives? If you were as tough as you want to be behind a keyboard, you would post your real name, phone number and address.

Mike, this POS has no real courage.

May 6, 2016 @ 9:32 AM

Freedom of speech

Toronto Mike you should respect freedom of speech

No need to block people who say things you dont like-we are not living in North Korea and there is something called Freedom of speech and Expression

Now if you dont like what people say and their democratic opinions, why dont you shut down this website and go away

AGAIN, Fort Mac should burn down and quickly-those people were greedy, selfish and only thought of themselves
What goes round comes around

May 6, 2016 @ 9:46 AM

The Voice of Reason

So you claim to speak for the majority of Canadians? You are just a low level troll.

i hope it catches up with you for your ignorant postings.
however, i have a feeling, that you cant really think these thoughts you just post them to get a reaction. you are low like that.

the video from ft. mac of the guy driving out of his neighbourhood - raging fire on both sides, embers falling from the sky - it made me cry in grief and fear.

i guess the fire is so big now you just have to let it burn itself out and protect what you can. i hope no one dies.

Freedom of Expression

@Voice of reason

How do you justify a high school drop out earning $200K in 6 months?
And then those costs are passed to us in the form of higher utility bills and taxes

The people of Fort Mac are greedy.Look at those huge homes now burning neatly in the inferno
Do you know that many of those homes are owned by Twenty something spoilt brats

I know a guy who went to fort mac and gets over paid like that

May 6, 2016 @ 10:04 AM

The Voice of Reason

@Freedom of Expression

Simple answer to your question. Those "high school drop outs" work harder than you do. If you had even a part of their will to work you may actually have a job.

You seem jealous of the hard working type of people.

May 6, 2016 @ 10:13 AM

Freedom of Expression

@voice of reason

You are right, I dont have a job, i have a career and a business.I employ people while you go to work in a job and get enslaved by the corporation
Again, Most Canadians know that the people of Fort Mac were the greediest bunch of get rich scheme people in Canada
Now the fire will equalize
There is no justification for a high school drop out earning $200 K in 6 months just coz they are connected and dig the earth for oil
Are you one of those greedy fort Mac girls that earned 150K for offering a vital service in the mines?

May 6, 2016 @ 10:31 AM

Argie

I've always been a big believer in free speech as long as someone isn't threatening to harm or promoting the idea of harming an individual(s). But hey, its Mike's blog, and we should all respect his wishes.

That said, the comments about "high school dropouts" making $200 grand are asinine. These guys are going off to another province to work their ass in brutal conditions unlike some wanker in Toronto who would rather complain about it while nursing their latte in a cozy warm Starbucks.

May 6, 2016 @ 10:48 AM

Fort Mac

@Argie-its good when Canadians complain about greed, deception and corruption even with a latte in hand like I have here in Toronto

Brutal conditions?I can easily work in Fort Mac but as you know, its corrupt and rife with nepotism.You cant just go there and work, you have to know someone from the inside
High school drop outs making 200K in 6 months if a waste of resources

Again, Karma has come to bite.Maybe after this, they will question their greed

@ T.O. Mike,
Please let Fort Mac, Freedom of Expression, Let Fort Mac Burn quickly and Fast, or whatever handle he/she decides to use, continue uncensored. Clearly there are some underlying issues here and I think the comments, though terribly misconstrued in my opinion, provide some valuable insight for the collective, showing us that there are people who really think this way.
We cringe at the goings on in the good ol' US of A and the behaviour of the presumptive Republican candidate, constantly reassuring ourselves that could never happen here. We're better than that. But judging by the sentiments expressed by our ungrateful interloper, we aren't as far removed from a similar fate as some would have us believe.

@Fort Mac Guy/Troll

1. A python script doesn't create IP numbers. If you can write in Py, you know that. Good try.

2. You clearly haven't worked in the Mac. The only people making "200K a year" are skilled tradesman working huge amount of overtime & those salaries are few and far between. Most of those high salaries happened during the actual boom (prior to the 2009 economic meltdown). And most of those "unskilled" people working up there left their families and lives behind in the East Coast to go make a living. That's hardly lazy or privileged. And look at you slick, living in an area where -15C elicits a "cold weather alert". Go live in the Mac for a winter. And all those 6 bedrooms houses? When many people come to the Mac, they live in their cars, vans, shitty hotels (sharing a single room) or in trailers. In winter they wrap up their cars and trailers in plastic to keep warm. Often they have no running water. In the camps you live in a closet. You also don't work an 8 hour day or a 5 day week. Depending on your rotation you could work 10 or 12 hour days for 18 days straight. Why weren't you up there on the so called gravy train. And if you live in town you deal with long commutes to work, lineups that put Toronto to shame & extremely high costs.

TM: Feel free to email me the IP numbers. No charge.

PS Troll. The oil camps (most are north of The Mac) sent their employees home to make room for evacuees. They gave them a place to stay, they fed them, they let them shower, make free calls & now they're putting them on planes NO CHARGE to get out of there. Call me a #westerner but somehow I doubt the Financial sector in Toronto would do the same thing.

We have fellow Canadians who are dealing with something utterly unimaginable, that nobody should ever have to deal with in their life, let alone have it wished upon them by a self-righteous, arrogant, ignorant person. There seem to be many of them in the Toronto are. Every single Canadian directly or indirectly benefits, every single day of the year, from the hard, hard work, in a harsh climate, done by the people in and around the Fort McMurray area, northern Alberta and anywhere else in the country where energy is used.

One Edmonton school principal saw the disaster’s immediate, human impact when she introduced a young pupil to a new classroom on Thursday.

“My world,” the child said, “is burning.”
(http://news.nationalpost.com/news/canada/fort-mcmurray-fire-now-too-large-too-fierce-to-stop-without-rain)

Canada is the second largest geographic territory in the world, a country in which we have to travel and ship over longer distances - and have to heat our homes for the majority of the year. That will never change.

One of the best, and balanced, commentaries that I have seen or read this week comes from the National Post's Jen Gerson. She "dares to go there".
Jen Gerson: Fort Mac isn’t karma

Good on ya, Jen Gerson.

Now is a time for all Canadians to put any differences aside and support the people of Fort McMurray. Since their election, the federal government has given away Billions of Canadian taxpayer dollars to countries abroad, pledging more with billions of borrowed dollars to come. At least they've now come to the table, saying that they will match what individual Canadians and companies are donating to the Canadian Red Cross first. That will be many millions. Certainly nowhere near the Billions that will be required to help a city of nearly 100,000 (88,000 of whom have been evacuated so far) rebuild...their homes, their schools, their parks, their businesses, their lives. May none of us ever need that kind of support from our fellow Canadians.

Excellent commentary #2 - from Rex Murphy

How Rex Murphy stays employed at the CBC, given many of his broadcast and written commentaries, I don't know. I suspect he has photos, so to speak.

In his recent commentary, what he talks about explains a lot of why Alberta and Albertans, along with Newfoundland and Newfoundlanders, are so attractive and friendly. They have a sense of belonging and community that a metropolis like Toronto - and too many Torontonians - could ever have, let alone understand.

Anyone in any country facing a disaster of this level should have the unbridled support of their fellow humans. The only way to face this is not to give these folks the time of day.

@ Irv: is this remotely possible? Does the geography support this possibility? Found this posting on facebook. This is part of a posting:

Officials warn that the out-of-control blaze spread now threatens two oil sands sites south of the city. It has consumed entire neighborhoods of Fort McMurray in Canada's energy heartland.

Folks, if this conflagration were to ignite the Athabasca oil sands, it would become a possibly uncontrollable planetary cataclysm, an ecological catastrophe, and an environmental pollution disaster of the highest order. The massive quantity of carbon that would suddenly be propelled into the atmosphere in the form of various greenhouse gases would drastically accelerate global warming, perhaps irreversibly. The global human health consequences that would result from the precipitous degradation of planetary air quality from the vast quantities of toxic organic chemical and particulate pollution are beyond comprehension.

@Ed

I'd think it's unlikely that would happen. The oil sands have been there millions of years & this likely isn't the first fire they've had in the area. I'd figure it's possible that small patches of bitumen could catch fire. You can find bits on the surface of the ground. Natives used to use the tar to seal their canoes & burn for heat. Coal seams & coal beds do sometimes catch on fire & stay burning underground for years though. I would say it's unlikely and more fear mongering over the "evil oil sands"

I tell ya though, I live in Alberta in the mountains and I just cringe at this coming year. Last year the smoke was so bad you couldn't see more than 1 km. If this year continues like it has it's going to be ugly and this won't be the first real disaster. Even the mountain peaks around me have almost no snow which is unusual. When I drive into Calgary I notice how low the sloughs (ponds) are on Stoney Nakota nation. The snow pack around Louise was good this year but it's all gone. When someone says "weather in May" I'm used to a sudden snow storm not 30C. It's already dry in Vancouver too. Last year they nearly ran out of water (which probably shocks people given people see the city as a rainy hell).

One last post before I go out for a run at possibly get eaten by a hungry grizzly

I see a lot of people in Ontario on my social media bitching about power rates being so high (they're now about the same as rates in Alberta). The rates are higher because the government has shut down Nanticoke's coal firing generation plant. At one time that plant produced 1/2 of the CO2 that the entire oil sands did. I wish the enviro's would go after the real enemy which is coal.

Anyways, what no one mentions is that there are no smog days anymore. Your power costs more, but it's clean and the result so is your world. Ontario smog days http://www.airqualityontario.com/history/aqi_advisories_stats.php

@Then There's This

Interesting article. It mentions something few people in the East are aware of: mountain pine beetle. This insect has decimated forests in BC & there are trees on my own street are affected. The trees die & became standing firewood.

Other Fort Mac points:

- A brilliant job by the CBC in coverage. The evening the evacuation started, CBC Alberta went completely live. They were the only station on the air in the Mac & put callers on the radio live. Even when they returned to regular programming it was heavily focused on the fire. For many up in Fort Mac, Radio 1 was the only connection to the outside world.

- Rex Murphy: I think his claims about the oil sands and Alberta are pretty accurate. Fort Mac is what you get when you mix Alberta values with Maritime values. They're hard working people who help each other out when times are tough (which seems to be all the time lately). Rex isn't an "intellectual" but does he need to be? Rex is a good spokesperson for the average Canadian who was up there working to feed their family.

- Now what? Oil sands production plays a major part in the economy of Alberta and of Canada. Like the oil sands or not, the wealth creation plays a major part in the economy of Canada. The oil sands are the largest industrial complex in the free world. It creates hundreds of thousands of direct jobs. It produces billions of dollars in tax revenue which are shared across the country and pay for education & health care. When it's firing on all cylinders Fort McMurray produces the same type of wealth (for everyone) as Ontario did in it's manufacturing heyday. That's a lot of paid bills & kids with full bellies. Now what happens? The fires are thousands of miles from most of you but the economic outcome won't be.

- Kudos to the hundreds of restaurants, hotels, auto service outlets, etc. etc. etc. offering free everything to evacuees. Kudos to the oil companies for not only giving evacuees a place to sleep, but feeding them & flying them out of the area. Kudos to the education institutions in Calgary and Edmonton opening up empty dorm rooms for evacuees. And remember that times are incredibly difficult in Alberta right now. There are "ghost buildings" in downtown Calgary. The lights on are on but no one is working. There were people who drove north to help out, give out gas, food, etc who were unemployed and using their own savings to help others out. That's pretty fucking awesome. #Alberta #Canada

Well, how about those Orioles. Mark Trumbo almost hit for the cycle. He got a single, a home run and a triple. He just didn't get a double, but my Orioles won and Chris Tillman pitched a great game. My Diamondbacks also won so baseball was great. How about those Cavs. They won but only by one measly point. A win is a win though. I will take it. Anyway, Heat will win tonight. I want Cavs an Heat, but no matter what, Cavs are winning it all. Yes, they are the NBA champions of 2016. Now the Cavs are resting for a few days. Heat in six.

You know what pisses me off?

Anytime someone says "Toronto Mike you should respect freedom of speech"

You know why? Because that ignorant POS has no clue what it means.

Freedom of speech means that the government will (with exceptions) not prosecute you for expressing your opinion.

You know what it doesn't mean?

It means you have no right to say whatever bullshit you want on this site without Mike's permission. Mike can ban you or edit you any time he wants too on HIS site. Mike has no responsibility to honour or respect the crap people say on this site.

It also means that if you post moronic crap you may be mocked , blocked or something else rhyming with blocked at any time.

My Orioles got rained out last night, but my Diamondbacks won so that's good. Heat also won so that is good. Heat in six. Cavs will beat the Heat and then beat the Warriors to win it all. You'll see and if they do win, I am right.

My Orioles won last night. That was great. Manny Machado and Adam Jones hit home runs. My Diamondbacks also won as well with another Paul Goldschmidt homer. Baseball was good. The Heat will win tonight and then win game 6. Heat in six. Cavs will beat the Heat though and then the Warriors. You'll see. I'm going to win the pool. $100.00 richer.

How about those Orioles. That was a great win 9 to 2. Two homers by my now favourite player, Mark Trumbo. He's so awesome. Chris Davis and Adam Jones also hit home runs. Tyler Wilson pitched a great game. My Diamondbacks lost a slugfest though 8 to 7. That sucked. Anyway, too bad the Heat didn't win. This sucks. Well, Heat in seven now. The Cavs are still resting. I hope they will be all rested up to win the next round. I really really need the Cavs to win. First time for everything.

While much of the corporate media has described the Leap Manifesto as irrelevant, unhelpful, and even “national suicide”, a new poll begs to differ. Already, half of all people who have heard of the Leap Manifesto support it. That includes a majority of the NDP and Green party, half of Liberal voters, and even twenty percent of Conservative voters.

Of course I'm not the 'real' Ed Broadbent (above) but he does remain one of my political heroes.
