Mike, just want you to know that I love your podcast and this week you provided the best content in the city.

I sincerely believe it's the best secret in the city.

So thank you.

If Irv is as good as he claims to be, I expect him to out the party that sabotaged Laremy Tunsil, but noon eastern.

My suspicions are that we will get a long winded statement about nothing as usual though.

Views from Game 6

April 29, 2016 @ 9:04 AM

My Orioles played a great game last night winning 10 to 2. Home runs by Chris Davis, Manny Machado and Mark Trumbo. Mychal Givens was the winning pitcher. Diamondbacks won as well which is a great thing. Anyway, Pacers are going to win tonight. It will go to a game 7 which the Pacers will win as well. That's what will happen.

Crazy shit happening with the Gang Bangers shooting it up in the Toronto condo.
Pretty hard core criminals for 17 years of age. All I wanted to do at 17 was to cruise in my car and try and talk up the ladies.

April 29, 2016 @ 10:39 AM

VoR. A simplified explanation.

1. Likely a hack given the timing. Likely someone he knows too. It's personal. No ransom, no political statement, etc.
2. Contact Twitter, pull the connecting IP & times. If Twitter refuses, a judge will help you (CFAA territory). Becomes more difficult if the "hacker" used Tor or proxychains (not likely)
3. Find the video. Pull the XMP metadata off the video. It may give you date/time created. IF it was made with a smart phone it may give you GPS too.
4. Take a break & wax a few snowboards at Whistler
5. Even if he wiped the system, ISP, router, MAC address, etc could be used to analyze. Not likely he masked his MAC either. Most people don't think about layer 2.
6. If a phone was used and wiped recovery could be easy. If you don't run the vacuum command on a SQLite database the data is still there even if wiped. It simply gets rebuilt. Santoku Linux is a distro that has all those tools. It's sort of the brother to Kali Linux.

It may not even be a crime. If Laremy shared this video to other people well he has little recourse. It's a lack of common sense. Now, all you need to do is get me a job at the FBI and I'll start on the details of the case ASAP brother.

My money's on it not being a hack at all, but someone in the fam with the login info. The stepdad is an obvious suspect.

April 29, 2016 @ 11:30 AM

Yeah, likely a jilted friend or family member. Maybe pissed off he wasn't generous enough with his new found riches? And if the video was on a shared computer well that'll be real tough to prove on his side. And Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act protects Twitter, etc for content posted by 3rd parties.

2 points for the creativity in making that bong.

As a Cleveland Browns fan, I'm relieved he was taken before they had a chance to. We have enough screw ups on that team.

April 29, 2016 @ 11:46 AM

The Voice of Reason

You definitely did not let me down. Your skills are nearly as weak as your long winded (expected) response.

The sad thing about Laremy Tunsil, is that the young man seems to have left his demons in his past and someone was trying to destroy his future. I will be pulling for this man in his career.

April 29, 2016 @ 11:57 AM

@VoR, well that's good slick *LOL*. I mean you're only asking me to do digital forensics on devices & accounts I have no access too. I left my Gandalf the Wizard hat in my locker at work bro. But really, cut with the troll shit man. It's weak and it's lame. If you're going to troll me at least get a little creative or threatening.

As for his demons, what demons? His only demon is a lack of common sense.

April 29, 2016 @ 12:23 PM

The Voice of Reason

You really get defensive. One would think that due to your self proclaimed expertise, discovering the person that took a shot at Laremy Tunsil would be child's play.

This was not trolling, but offering a challenge not unlike a challenge from one person to another in a competitive environment. I was at the gym last night and was challenged to bench 305. I accepted and did it with numerous reps.

My fault for giving you more credit than what you really deserve.

Have great day, come by the gym and I will provide a tissue.

April 29, 2016 @ 12:42 PM

@ Mike

I have been reading and participating in blog for around 10 years. I know you don't like to block people or stop people from commenting (Dave Williams excepted). But recently it has been harder to enjoy the comment section.
There used to be healthy debates and I admit to being a part of many debates with Argie. But at least Argie could be reasonable and for the most part didn't purposefully attack people.

I have been starting to avoid the comments now. Time and time again there are certain posts that aren't meant to engage debate or solicit advice. They are meant to antagonize and solicit a fight.

It reminds me of Dave Williams. The same sort of arguments without facts and basic trolling behaviour.

I am not telling you how to run your site nor am I really asking for a change. I am just saying that perhaps the comment section is a place that I will avoid.

Anyway, Happy Friday! Go Raptors! The Wire is still the best TV show ever. Fingers are still crossed a certain Fresh-Wes who happens to be a Maestro will do your podcast.

April 29, 2016 @ 2:08 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

To paraphrase Winston Churchill, the best argument against an Open Mike is a glance at the comments.

I did eventually ban Dave Williams, because I started to hate my own blog. I could (and maybe should) also ban The Voice of Reason and Irvine for the same reason.

And maybe I will... but I don't really know what the answer is. If it's an open forum where (almost) anything goes, that's going to happen. I try to moderate best I can, but I'm also trying not to make a full time job out of being the site's daddy. It's not easy to strike the balance.

Let me think on all of this for a bit. This is partly why I killed the 2nd Open Mike of the week and brought it back to just the one. I have no doubt the Irvines and Voice of Reasons have chased away the many regulars I used to enjoy a decade or so ago. I miss 'em!

April 29, 2016 @ 2:16 PM

The Voice of Reason

Mike I will not egg Irv any longer. I do apologize sincerely.

I saw your tweets with Amber. I recall Rivers in the morning announcing over top of Linear (that had to be late summer 1990). I pretty much listened between 1978 through to 1993 at various times. What period were you most familiar with?

April 29, 2016 @ 4:45 PM

The UK newspaper The Guardian has a series on 'the web we want', including the issue and value of comments on articles, and ending abuse towards the authors, subjects, and other readers. The series can be found here -
And a nice article about how they moderate comments (and the authors likely to get the most abuse) can be found here -

April 29, 2016 @ 5:00 PM

@ McNulty,

Your comment is spot on. Irv,,,, slick, dude etc., as mentioned in a past comment, is a quasi pedantic troll who has screwed up other boards with his diatribe. VOR at least is contrite and I admire this. Irvine will surely respond with vitriolic threats etc. Just watch!!!!

April 29, 2016 @ 5:46 PM

Wednesday my wife was 38 weeks preggo. We had a c-section planned for that day due to partial placenta previa, but that cleared up. So the c-section at 6:30am was cancelled, with May 11th due date back on track for a regular birth.

Then on Wednesday at 3:40am, her water broke and she went into contractions all at once! No questions about it, IT WAS ONE! Got to the hospital and checked in ~4:30am, exactly when we would have been for the c-section.

Our Doula (Kristi Clemens of Helping Hands Doula ( a friend of the family and an amazing person-- joined us for the labor. My wife started at 2cm, and was 3cm when she got the epi. And then we waited. And waited. And waited. All the while the baby's heartbeat was going up. 140-ish is normal. 160-ish is high. 180-200 bpm was concerning. So at 2pm, Heather was only 6cm dialated-- out of an expect 10cm, and only ~1 cm/hour expected. Baby couldn't put up with that heartbeat for that long. Baby coming out now!

So even though we were going to have a c-section, then didn't, on the exact day we had a c-section. I scrubbed in, held my wife's hand for about a minute-- and then from beyond the curtain we both heard a loud cry! Baby was here!!!!!!!

At exactly 2:43pm on Wednesday, April 27th, we welcomed 7lb-0oz Molly Rose-Clare Houghton-Kates to the world!

Mom and baby are happy and healthy, recovering from c-section just fine and all med checks out ok. We're back home, and waiting on a big order of sushi to arrive (first in nine months lol).

Congrats Lorne. As long as everyone is healthy (including you).

If a son is born & want him to play hockey & parents have $, you have to name him Connor.

Connor McDavid, Connor Brown & Connor Brown (both with the Marlies & Brown 5 pts. last night).

Why doesn't Leafs TV show ALL Marlie games as at least something to hope for, since Jays struggling BIG time.

April 29, 2016 @ 8:50 PM

Actually I discussed my threats about a week ago with the moderator of this blog. I'll be contacting the SOWNY moderator this weekend.

It's not secret some people really hate me. That's fine. People are free to challenge me, diss me, etc. And there are people who pretend to be me & make up gossip, rumors, to the point of defamation. In some cases they've crossed well into libel. Pretend you're me, saying something nasty about someone else. Thing is, if i used the name "big fuzzy bear" and you use it to say something nasty. It's another when you use my real name. I use my real name. In one case an individual actually posted using my name claiming layoffs were coming at a certain radio station.

Over the years I've collected information on people. I've printed off posts & using social media, a variety of tools, etc & sometimes people just offering me information I've built files on about half a dozen people.

Recently, someone made a disparaging comment on this site about someone I don't really like. The person read it and immediately assumed it was me. He freaked out, contacted the moderator who contacted me asking me if I'd wrote it. I hadn't. But that was it. At that point I decided I'd stop this. I get hired on a regular basis to unmask trolls who attack the reputation of firms.

So one of my "threats" as you call it is going to be a public apology to myself and the members of this forum. I've yet to decide if I'll demand the persons use their real name. I know in one case it would cost the person their job. I think that's "overly harsh".

What few people realize is you can extract a phenomenal amount of information out of data. After the murder of Kelsey Felker in Kitchener I submitted a detailed report to Waterloo Regional Police. I'd traced her final days based on metadata from social media accounts & her Blackberry which was running it's GPS. The digital bread crumbs ended at the Knights Inn. Someone had unwisely taken her phone and was posting on her social media after her death.

In the coming months 3 people are going to get some registered mail they never expected to receive. And I suspect after they receive that this forum & others will be much quieter.

Is that pedantic enough for you slick? And if you think I'm bullshitting, contact the moderator. I mailed him this request last week.

April 29, 2016 @ 10:12 PM

@GUNTer Thanks for thinking of us. It's been a crazy hectic few weeks, getting nursery ready, seeing OB, all that fun stuff. Molly coming early is a surprise, but a welcome one. She's sleeping away on my chest right now as I type this. I am over the moon. I'm over every moon in the entire galaxy. =)

Congrats, Lorne. Saw your twitter post too.

Congrats to Lorne. That's great news. Well, how about those Orioles. That's a great win. Nolan Reimold hit a three run homer. Mike Wright pitched a good game, but Brad Brach got the win. My Diamondbacks did lose though. That's no good 9 to 0. robby Ray lost another game. That's no good. My Pacers won. That's wonderful. Okay, my Pacers will wwin tomorrow. They will do that and win tomorrow and go to the next round. Pacers or Cavs are going to win it all, but prefer the Pacers. They can do it.

I'm not sure.

I have 4GB / month on my phone, and I rarely exceed half of that. And I record every single ride with MapMyRide. This month, that has been exactly 28.5 hrs of riding this month.

So I don't think it's that much data.

April 30, 2016 @ 8:02 AM

I decided to check the data usage by MapMyRide over the past 30 days.

It's a paltry 26.27 MB.

That's nothing.

@Toronto Mike: from your Twitter feed:
I have to agree, The State was a good album, probably Nickelback's best IMO. As much as I hate to admit this, I actually don't mind Nickelback's older stuff. The State was a good album, and Silver Side Up was decent. I forget the name of the song, but "What the hell is on Joey's head?" is where they lost me. Side Of a Bullet is the last Nickelback tune I actually didn't mind.

April 30, 2016 @ 10:07 AM

@ Lorne

Congrats!!! Glad mom and baby are doing well. Enjoy this time.

April 30, 2016 @ 1:44 PM

My Orioles blew it last night. They were leading a couple times, but lost a heartbreaker and the closer, Zach Britton sprained his ankle so he is day to day. I hope it won't be worse than it really is. My Diamondbacks also lost. That's no good. Not a good night for sports. Oh well, my Pacers will win today. I hope so anyway. Pacers or Cavs will win the NBA championship. No NFL audio pass again this season. Now they are introducing a package that includes watching games or listening to games, but can't just get the audio. This package costs $300.00 and that's US dollars. I'm not getting it. I don't even want TV. Hopefully there will be some way to get my Ravens and Cardinals. I know my Ravens play on Christmas Day. I am glad I will have football for Christmas, but if I can't get it, then it's not good.

My Pacers lost. That makes me mad. I very much wanted them to win. Okay, I am cheering for the Cavs and Heat. I have the Cavs now. I don't have the Heat, but I hope they win anyway. My Orioles lost yesterday as well. This was a blowout 7 to 1. JJ Hardy also injured himself. That's no good. My Diamondbacks also lost as well. They got swept. This has not been a good weekend for sports. Oh well, better things hopefully will happen in sports. We also have a very famous birthday on Friday. Bob Seger will be 71 years old so it will be Bob Seger day on Friday and Thursday will be his birthday eve so everyone say happy birthday to Bob Seger. Brendan Gallagher from the Habs also has a birthday eve on Thursday and a birthday on Friday. Another very important person and the Habs or Coyotes will win the cup next year. Anyway, go Cavs and go Heat.

Thanks Mike! I want to start mapping rides but was worried it would burn a lot of data.

May 2, 2016 @ 1:58 PM

Goody, the Cavs won. That's great. I said I didn't like Lebron. Cavs are good though. They're going to win the championship. I think the eastern final will be Cavs and Heat and then the Cavs will go on to beat Golden State and win it all and I win my money. That's wonderful. Three days counting today until Bob Seger's birthday. The day after tomorrow is his birthday eve. He's 71 and still very much alive.

May 3, 2016 @ 7:41 AM

Goody, the Heat won. That's wonderful. Cavs will win tonight. Cavs all the way. Cavs will win the NBA championship this year. How about those Orioles. That was a great win. Mark Trumbo is amazing. He really is. He's my favourite player now. He hit two home runs. Boy, he can hit and Chris Tillman pitched a great game. My Diamondbacks didn't do so well though. They lost again. Why do they have to keep losing so much. Did anyone do their census? I did mine. It's so long. It's never been this long before, but the Government wants to know everything but if you don't do it, you could go to jail. So that's a crime if you don't do it, but it went on and on and on. So much. They want to know everything. Wish I could have just said none of your damn business. Today is Bob Seger's birthday eve eve. Tomorrow is his birthday eve and Friday is his birthday. Bob Seger is not going to die any time soon. He's alive and he's healthy.

You are hilarious. You should be doing gigs at Yuk Yuks or on Comedy channel
I read your comments frequently here for a LAUGH.
Countdown to Bob Seger's BDay. Tomorrow is his birthday eve. Can't wait, Oh forget about it another day in paradise for Cheryl.
BTW you must be listening to his music repertoire as you have been commenting.

Happy Birthday Robert

May 4, 2016 @ 8:15 PM

Bob Saget's birthday is coming up in less than two weeks. Hopefully there will be a countdown for him too. All famous Bobs should get equal recognition. Did you know Bob Newhart is 86? His birthday isn'the until September though.

May 4, 2016 @ 10:35 PM

I don't want to talk about baseball. My Orioles lost big and my Diamondbacks lost again. This sucks. How about those Cavaliers though. Well, they won. They're the NBA 2016 champions. They are beating Atlanta 2 to 0 and the Heat will win tonight. The Heat will win it in four or five. Cavs in four. Cavs will then go on and beat the heat and then go on and beat the Warriors and win the championship. That will be great. Cavs all the way. You'll see and I am going to win my money. The guy who dropped out will be so sad he won't get his money, but it's his choice. I'm winning it. It's Bob Seger's birthday eve today and his birthday tomorrow. 71 years old. That's great. Yes, the Cavs are the NBA champions this year. Go Cavs go.
