Canadian hockey will be well represented in the upcoming Stanley Cup playoffs, a good number of the Dallas Stars are Canadian Boys!!! Being a Dual citizen, totally looking forward to the real season STANLEY!!!!! No matter which team wins there will be Canadian Boys skating around the rink carrying the Cup, bet on it.

Thanks to Leafs sucking the past few years (I know, its been more than a few years), I have very little interest in any hockey. I don't care who wins the Cup and definitely don't care at all about the upcoming World Cup.

Too many enjoyable things to do outside - and even inside the house.

It's safe to say the passion for NHL playoff hockey is at an all-time low. If I have nothing better to do, I'm still watching a bit here and there. I caught most of the Panthers vs. Islanders last night, and the Pens vs. Rangers the night before.

There's also an interesting hesitation with Raptors fans right now. This team really needs to win a best of seven. Plenty of fans, plenty of worry.

I agree with Argie about NHL hockey. I have spent the last little while engrossed in the OHL. It is seems to be a lot more fun and way more affordable.
My son loved the games and $25 a ticket you can't go wrong (those were playoff tickets!).

NHL playoffs? No thanks. I will stick to the Raptors.

I was thinking the same thing. We Leafs fans forget what good hockey looks like.

I would absolutely love a Pens vs. Kings final.

Off topic, Bill Johnson resigned as the UW-Milwaukee radio play by play voice.

He seemed to burn every bridge on his way out.

Here is his insta gram post.

" To quote Groucho Marx “Hello, I must be going!” Before the decision is made for me, I am officially announcing my retirement as the voice of Milwaukee Panthers Men’s basketball. I would say it’s taking the last life boat off the Titanic, but that would be unfair to the crew of the Titanic.

Never have so many competant [sic], talented people been run off by such a talentless group of entitled beaurocrats [sic]. No matter how much the coaches, players, and support staff care, they can’t overcome incompetent administrators.

UWM leads the world in incompetent administrators.

I criticize awful athletic directors like Koonce, Costello, Geiger, and Braun. It’s not their fault. Hell, if they elected me President I’ld take the job. If I suck at it, it’s not my fault. I’m not qualified to be President.

Should Amanda Braun turn down an AD job just because she’s horribly under qualified? Hell no. She’s a bad AD, and a deplorable human being, but those are the cards she’s been dealt.

Those in charge of the UW System have failed to hire effective administrators. Failed. F F F F!

It has been my pleasure to work with the wonderful players and coaches for 17 seasons. The players, coaches, parents and the fans have been like my family.

I will miss Panther hoops the rest of my life. Best of luck to my friends that are still imprisoned at UWM Athletics. Fight on, brothers (and sisters.) Keep your heads low and make us proud.

Finally, best of luck to LaVall Jordan, his staff, and the players. As so often happens in the NCAA, it’s not your fault. Win and get out quick, because long term is fatal at UWM Athletics.

Panther Nation, it has been my pleasure.Cheers!"

I don't care about hockey until October as my Habs and Coyotes are out. I joined the basketball playoff pool though. One just started. I have the Pacers. Hopefully they will win so I win my money. If they lose unless someone else wants out, then I drop out, but they won't lose. I know they won't. My Orioles blew it last night. They were winning, but then they go and lose in the late innings. Now they lost a couple in a row and this is not good. Anyway, my Diamondbacks lost as well which also sucks. I don't know why my Diamondbacks can't win much and I hope my Orioles can turn it around and start winning again.

And speaking of new music I was thinking about missing out on what's out there these days and how listening to 590 does not introduce much that's new to my universe.

I have something of a solution. I'm following up on Alan Cross's weekly playlists.
lot new there and some of what i've heard in the last week sounds promising.

I'm with you James Edgar.

I too fantasize regularly about winning an absurd amount of money and the devious things I'd do before I checked out of my job. I'd do stuff along the lines of what Edward Norton does in Fight Club. I wouldn't kill anyone, but I might stab a few people. I wouldn't go too deep though, so they could totally continue working the rest of the day.

Trying out Naylor and Lansberg in the morning. Is it glaringly obvious to anybody else that Michael Landsberg is condescending, and incredibly unlikeable? The way he treats Naylor, and the way he even treats some of his guests, as if he has disdain for all of them and their comments? Its tough to listen to.

@James Edgar.

That is blasphemy.

Actually, the first time I went to see Fight Club in a theatre, a buddy and I got hammered with some girls we were trying to hook up with and I fell asleep and missed the whole damn thing.

But it is a fantastic film and it gets better with age in my view. It takes a couple of viewings too to really understand what the hell is going on. There is a sequel in graphic novel form..not sure if a film will be made from it though.

I am really enjoying having Dan Shulman calling Blue Jays games on Sportsnet. Less Pat Tabler works for me, too.

Over to hockey...
Some of you might like (or hate) reading the National Post Sports "No Canada" series. Link to the series: http://news.nationalpost.com/tag/no-canada-series

I ended up at the "No Canada" series after reading this piece today: http://news.nationalpost.com/full-comment/chris-selley-canada-needs-to-take-back-its-game-from-the-nhl

Essentially, the maybe once "Canadian" game is all in the hands of Americans. Writer Chris Selley notes the NHL's New York City office. In this piece, he mentions salary caps, but that's as close as he gets to the real reason Americans control pretty much everything in and for the NHL: money.

The only good thing about no Canadian teams in the playoffs this year is the televised game will be a few minutes shorter.

There won't be "O Canada" sang at any of the arenas.

Playoff pools are a crapshoot & the lucky person wins. Twice in last 10 years the 8th place team won the cup & probably very few players chosen from those teams.

April 15, 2016 @ 5:53 PM

markosaar

Excited for Raptors in the playoffs, and am really enjoying the Jays regular season so far. I expect the Boston series to be gruelling though.

I can't believe I'm saying this about a Rogers product, but I'm really appreciating the $25/mth Sportsnet Now online streaming subscription. Chromecasts well from my PC to my TV too.

I preferred the mlb.tv stuff, but it's pricey upfront and there's no guarantee they won't get blacked out eventually. The Sportsnet Now notifications on my phone are extremely solid and well configurable regardless. Actually hilariously, they were spoiling the home runs last night ... the online stream is about a minute behind broadcast.

Well, how about those Orioles, amazing. They almost lost it, but had a big inning in the seventh. Mark Trumbo who is now my favourite player hit two home runs in one inning. That's great. My Orioles are winning again. That's great the losing streak was not that long. My Diamondbacks won as well. This is great. Yes, I have the Pacers in my pool. They're going to win. They'll surprise a lot of people. I'm going to win the money. One team per person as quite a few people joined. Let's go Pacers. Let's do it.

I had noted that I was done with Breakfast Television after they fired Jennifer Valentyne. It's been about two week now and I'm finding something strange after being a long time viewer for my morning news weather and ttc traffic info: I'm not missing the show at all.

I'm not sure if that speaks anything about me or if that's something about the show quality in general but I'm finding now that I can go without it and just tune into City for the 6pm news.

On the same line, I noticed on City's website the other day that instead of the old ad with the full "cast" of BT it's now just an Ad with Kevin and Dina. Don't know if that means anything or if it's just something temporary while they scrub Jennifer away form all things BT but I found it interesting none the less.

Well, my Orioles had a lead last night. Adam Jones, Chris Davis and Manny Machado hit homers. No homer by Mark Trumbo though. They go and blow it and lose. That sucks. My Diamondbacks also lost. This sucks. Not a good night for baseball last night, but today will be better I hope. Pacers will win again tomorrow. Yes they will. I told you I am going to win the pool. I will win and get my money. I just know I will. Paul George is amazing. Pacers in four, maybe five.

Nope, I have never been directly employed by any Government. I have did work for them though, all in the realm of cyber security. And that's clearly not a secret to anyone that knows me. My dislike of the government has everything to do with their invasive "intelligence" angle (read spying). I'm all for spying on ISIS or rogue nations that hate us. I'm totally against monitoring regular citizens because you can. The people should not fear the government. The government should fear the people.

BTW, was at a place that served "rattlesnake fondue" (really). I would have ordered it but the whole fondue thing takes hours which I didn't have. I've ate snake before in China. It's actually not that bad. I invited Toronto MIke be he said he'll "pass".

Well, my Orioles got rained out yesterday. At least they didn't lose. This means that they have to make another trip to Texas to play a game on June 20. My Diamondbacks won yesterday though. Two homers by Yasmani Tomas. Patric Corbin won his first game of the season so that's great. Tonight my Pacers are going to win again. Yes, they will. I know that Paul George can get it done. He is amazing. Pacers all the way. I will win my money. I just know. Go Pacers.

Amber Alert Irv

I see people in Ontario (and on SOWNY) are all in a snit over another Amber Alert. Just a refresher why Alerts happen the way they do.

Ontario's AMBER Alert system is mostly based on the US Dept of Justice setup. There is one major difference. It used to be required that it was a "confirmed" abduction and threat of harm. It is now if they "believe" there is an abduction or threat of harm.

Further, while it might seem like these are parental "spats", for kids under 14 the law is that abduction occurs when a parent takes the child out the possession of, and against the will of, the childs other parent or otherwise contravenes a court custody support order.

You can be charged with abducting your own children. Custody orders carry weight. Further, even if the child agrees to go with "Daddy' that is not consent as the child is a minor and cannot make such decisions in the eyes of the law. There has to be intent to deprive the other parent of possession of the child.

Legally, it's vague but that's what lawyers are for. But that's why you see these alerts for kids who were stolen by their parents.

And personally speaking, police are unlikely to go ape shit and amp everything up unless they perceive "risk". It's not like if Dad is just late coming back from Chuck E Cheese.

Did anyone watch the Sportsnet infomercial on Mark Shapiro that was shown after the Blue Jays game (Sunday, I think?) Wondering if it was as bad as the promos made it seem.

They interviewed Shapiro during one of the games last week, and I ended up turning the channel away from the game. Corporate bafflegab delivered with overtones of arrogance and smugness does not go too far with me, nor will it with other Toronto fans. This feels like Tim Lieweke all over again.

Evidence today's world is effed up:

Nazim Kadri (who I like, BTW) makes a throat slashing motion to another player and gets a small fine and no suspension. Kris Letang knocks a few teeth out of an opposing players' mouth with his stick and gets no suspension.

Andrew Shaw uses a "insensitive homophobic" word to a ref and receives a 1 game suspension.

Whatever happened to "sticks and stones may brake my bones (a few teeth as well) but names will never hurt me"???

April 21, 2016 @ 8:22 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Argie

If Shaw had called the ref a "fucking asshole", it would be fine.

The problem for Shaw is he used a homophobic slur. Racism and homophobia aren't tolerated in the NHL in 2016. This is a good thing, actually.

April 21, 2016 @ 8:44 AM

Argie

@Mike
I disagree. Shaw should have been suspended in either case - homophobic, racist or calling an official "effn a-hole". I also think Kadri and Letang should also have been suspended for their actions.

BTW, does the NHL policy also apply to calling someone a derogatory ethnic slur (eg. if a player is of Irish, Italian , German decent)? Golly, I wonder.
