In a completely unrelated event, I just got off the phone with ADT® Home Security.

Ok, so for those of us like me who aren't very active on social media...what's snap chat? What's Tinder?
I barely get on Facebook, nevermind all the other crap out there lol

@Jason from Sudbury

I will chime in, because I just spent my first week on SnapChat. My daughter uses it like crazy, so I wanted to SnapChat with her.

It's pretty awful from my perspective, but the kids love it. Basically, you send a picture, usually with a text message overtop, to a friend and it displays for several seconds before disappearing into the abyss. It's fun to go back and forth with my daughter when she's not with me, but practically speaking I doubt I'd ever use it. It feels like it's designed for 12 year old girls.

I've never used Tinder, but I've heard a great deal about it. This is a hook-up / dating app. If you're in the market, it uses your GPS to connect you to others in the area looking to hook-up or date. If you both dig each other, you start chatting.

I'm on Facebook, but really just for a handful of close friends and family. I like it for seeing pics of my nephews, etc.

I love Twitter. That's my jam. I'd drop all the others and wouldn't miss them, but I'd miss Twitter. I use it all day, every day.

My daughter also likes Instagram, so I'm on there to see what she posts, but I don't post there myself.

And that's pretty much all of my experience with social media.

April 1, 2016 @ 8:35 AM

Funny, I just started researching how to compromise home security systems. I wonder if @swiftonsecurity knows anything about it. I have a better sense of humour than that!. I'd make Justin Beiber videos appear randomly on your Smart TV

True Story: About 5-6 years ago there was a crack house across from where I lived. They ran these wireless cameras, so I hacked the password and would randomly play "Crazy Frog" videos on the screens that monitor them. They'd come out and look at the cameras all perplexed. That, my son, is Trolling at the IRV level.

April 1, 2016 @ 8:37 AM

Snapchat is a chat program that makes the messages disappear quickly. It's all the rage with younger people.

Tinder is basically "window shopping for a hook up". Mike's description is correct. It makes Plenty of Fish seem Victorian.

Just saw on Blog it true? Rogers Field will now be known as Rogers Skydome?? As it should have been in the first place..minus the Rogers part of course.

Check your calendar. That ain't ever happening.

April 1, 2016 @ 8:45 AM

Speaking of Rogers, I see they now will allow those of you who are cable cutters to stream the SportsNet channels on your computer. $25 bucks a month.

April 1, 2016 @ 8:47 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

If you like the Raps, all Leaf games, Juniors, World Championship, NFL, CFL, etc., you're still going to need the TSNs....

April 1, 2016 @ 8:55 AM

Well I'm sure TSN will offer the same thing in the near future.

Truth is what really needs to happen is we need a "SMART TV OS" or a much more robust Apple TV. I have a 4K smart TV, but many websites won't run on it (nor will streaming) because it lacks flash (and Flash SHOULD be outlawed). I been hoping they'd put in short cuts on Apple TV for networks with a monthly fee, but my Apple TV still doesn't have access to Beats 1 on it (boo hiss).

My buddy wants to sign up. He's a cable cutter but a major sports fan.

April 1, 2016 @ 9:04 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

But simple math.... if it's $25 / month to stream the Sportsnets, and $25 to stream the TSNs... you're already at $50 and you've got the two stations.

Imagine if you actually wanted a CBC or CNN or CTV news network?

At that point, you might as well negotiate the best deal possible with Rogers or Bell.

April 1, 2016 @ 9:09 AM

Agreed, the price will have to come down to get people to buy it.

Some might disagree but I think a mega-sports network of both SN & TSN (a merger) would be the best thing. That way you would have all of the sports content one would need from one provider at a decent price.

April 1, 2016 @ 9:26 AM

Well if you really wanted CBC or CTV you could get an antenna. I know in Vancouver I had good selection and I would imagine you would in Toronto too. The 1080P on over the air is way superior to what you get across cable.

These packages are targeting hard core sports fans who have cut the cord. For hard core fans they're willing to shell out the money a regular citizen wouldn't. I mean people pay $300 bucks to go to a hockey game.

I wonder if they play advertising.

On the topic of social media, if any of you have instagram, follow 187gangsterz. It's basically prisoners sending out photos and videos from various penal institutions, where they often show off the drugs, cash and contraband they've accumulated. Most recently they were posting videos of thugs bitch slapping snitches and other prison plebes. I'm glad to see these gentlemen having such a good time at the taxpayers' expense.

Also, if you've got an hour to kill and dig indie/classic alternative, stop by my blog for a 1 hour mix of music from the likes of Future Islands, The Stranglers, Arcade Fire, Stars, Love & Rockets and others.

Finally, if you've never been embarrassed by human behaviour, consider this your lucky day because that's about to change. Check out this short video from a buffet in Thailand:

I hate April Fool's Day.

April 1, 2016 @ 10:19 AM

So I'm not first. Oh well, it's not the end of the world not to be first. I had things I had to do. Anyway, how about those Habs. Shutout for Mike Condon. He may be almost as good as Carey Price. Anyway, why can't they make the playoffs? It's a bummer. Anyway, my Coyotes lost again though. That's no good and my Nets lost. Snow on the way next week. I mean can't we have spring? I want spring, not more winter.

April 1, 2016 @ 10:27 AM

I hate being a wet blanket and I know it's April Fools and all but I can't help but feel it's poor form on City's part, and specifically the people at Breakfast Television, to be doing a gag about Jennifer Valentyne being laid off in the midst of actual layoffs being done by Rogers to the various media people in their organization.

April 1, 2016 @ 10:31 AM

I agree, that's very poor taste.

Especially since that news could be totally legitimate any day now.

I just clicked over to see the gag. I just wonder what they were thinking. It's not particularly funny, in fact, it's kind of mean, and many will never realize it's another stupid April Fool's day "joke".

In case they wisen up and pull it, here it is:

It's possible Jennifer Valentyne really was fired by Rogers Media. If this is true, announcing it like this on the morning of April 1 is really confusing.

Congrats on finally finding a position.

April 1, 2016 @ 1:11 PM

April Fools lol. If I did end up back in Ontario I'd probably end up in Ottawa working for the Feds. I could learn Arabic & spend my days monitoring internet traffic for a pittance salary but ass kickin' pension. Of course I'd have to pass the polygraph before I got the job ;-). And I'd have to get that Snowden tattoo on my back removed too. So..WAY to much effort.

I guess I'll just stick to being a snowboarding instructor!

@Irv: I was waiting for someone to fall for that lol.

US State Department halts review of Clinton's private "email server" at FBI request.

And the American government wonders why the population is so mad? Clinton sets up her own email server (absolutely insecure), conducts business on it, gets dragged into a complete scandal over Benghazi, gets caught & her investigation gets put on hold

Meanwhile, some black kid who steals a pack of smokes gets shot fleeing from the cops. And people wonder why Trump and Sanders are doing so well.

Hillary Clinton is as filthy as they come.

April 1, 2016 @ 10:47 PM

My Suns and Nets both lost last night. Anyway, Habs will win tonight over Florida. They are up and coming. I wish they could make the playoffs though. Hopefully another Coyotes win as well. Just two more days until Orioles and Diamondbacks home openers. It will be great.

I take it the Toronto Star is now falling out of love with Wynne and the Ontario Liberals, exposing their arm twisting, and favouritism to the large lobbying groups willing to pay up for intimate meetings with the ministers. They really show no shame, and when caught Wynne scrambles to say she is putting a committee together to reform this practice.
Almost as bad as the Federal Liberals kick back scheme.
And people wonder why politicians like Rob Ford and Donald Trump can happen.

24.1C on the Prairies today and I am in shorts. But now to business...

I'm paying $143 /mo. for internet and digital cable through Shaw. I use the internet all the time and rarely watch tv. My wife occasionally goes online and rarely watches tv. Our tv is from the 80's, weighs a ton, and still works great (now I've done it!) so we've never bothered to upgrade anything.

So here's my question. The online streaming services that are available with CTV, Global, Discovery etc., are they paid for with my cable or my internet package? We watch the odd show online but we have to login with our Shaw account first. I'd love to cut my cable package but I don't want to lose the online streaming option.

Any advice?

April 2, 2016 @ 9:19 PM

@Blind Dave

I'm pretty sure you have to login with your TV service provider to stream stations like CTV.

April 2, 2016 @ 9:47 PM

Blind Dave

@TO Mike

I get both tv and internet from Shaw as a bundle, but I did fear it was the tv side that gave me the login privilege. Pity.

April 2, 2016 @ 11:18 PM

My Habs lost. They blew it. They had a 3 to 0 lead. They lost it 4 to 3. Fricken Florida wins. My coyotes won though 3 to 0. Great that they did that. My coyotes won't be in the playoffs either, but now I have baseball. tomorrow is opening day and my Orioles and Diamondbacks will win. I know they will. Seems like nobody wants a pool this year. That's okay. Maybe there will be one for the playoffs. I think more people are interested in one for the playoffs than one for the whole season. I won the playoff pool last year because I picked the Royals. The Royals are okay though, but my Orioles or Diamondbacks will win the World Series this year. As for cable, you're paying too much money, Blind Dave. Get Primus. You have your phone and your internet. I'm sure you can screen TV stuff. Your phone and internet will be one bill. You have the best customer service around. Get rid of your cable. Get Primus.

April 3, 2016 @ 6:05 AM

Well, my Suns and Nets both lost. This sucks. Anyway, more winter weather which also sucks. Why are we getting snow in April? Who knows. Anyway, home opener is today. Orioles will win.

April 4, 2016 @ 7:10 AM

Paul Martin

My Jays won. My Redstockings and Cleveland Barons will win tonight. My offshore tax accounts in Panama and St. Croix lost.

April 4, 2016 @ 5:07 PM

145 comments on Jennifer's dismissal? Guess nothing else to write about. Things change & too bad for Jen. If she is competent she will land on her feet in no time.

I'd rather read Cheryl's comments as that's my Comedy for the day, just like Yuk Yuks.

Go John Scott Go

April 4, 2016 @ 7:14 PM

My Orioles won. That's great, but it had a couple rain delays so lots of rain delays. My Diamondbacks lost though. Oh well. Now we're having winter weather. This seems more like January than April. Anyway, what can you do.

April 5, 2016 @ 6:01 AM

For the record, fk "Gibby".

April 5, 2016 @ 8:45 AM

My Habs and Coyotes both lost, but they're both out of the playoffs anyway. M Suns lost again. My Orioles had the night off. My Diamondbacks won again which is good. More winter. This is more like January weather. I wonder if we will ever get any spring. I hope so. I had enough winter.

April 6, 2016 @ 7:36 AM

Dave Deval

I was watching a baseball game the other day and they stopped playing cause it started to rain,Why does it have to rain and why do they stop. They don't stop playing football when it rains so why baseball. All baseball should be played in domes and all hockey games should be played outside cause it is winter anyway. Why does it have to rain.
Anyway back to you Tom.

April 6, 2016 @ 8:01 AM

My Orioles won. That was great. Chris Davis hit his first home run of the season. My Orioles are undefeated. They're a great team. My Diamondbacks lost though. My Nets also lost. They're not in the playoffs anyway though. I do have a CD of Merl Haggard's number one hits and I got it as a gift. I like a couple songs on it, but that's about it really.
