I am embarrassed to admit it but i assumed it was yet another white guy going off his rocker again in San bernardino the other day. What was actually going on seems to be up in the air but I'm going to step out and assume that religion has once again played a part. And while i have a dislike of all of them I'd be lying to everyone including myself if i said i thought they were all the same kind of sickness now. I'm starting to really dislike islam and what it appears to be bringing out in people.

All terrorists are Muslim but not all Muslims are terrorists, right?

I'm thinking about posting one Open Mike a month, on the first of the month. Sort of a catch-all where almost anything goes for the month...

What do you think? Would you miss the weekly Open Mikes?

December 4, 2015 @ 10:03 AM

Cheryl

I like the weekely open Mikes. If it was just once a month, it would bee too big. Compromise would be once every two weeks. My Habs lost. It didn't even go to overtime. My Coyotes lost. Oh well. My trainer won on Tuesday. They only lost one game in Major League. The tournament in Brantford started last night, but my trainer or Kean didn't play. Kean plays at 11:30 and my trainer plays at 5:30. They will both win. They will both be in the finals.

@Aaron
"All terrorists are Muslim but not all Muslims are terrorists, right?"

Nope. And if implied that it was not my intent. the planned parenthood attack was terrorism and so was the south carolina church shooting in fact and of these mass shootings that happen so often in the U.S. are terrorism even if the shooter is clearly off his rocker and has no agenda beyond death by Cop and hitting the front page of the news. . And at least the the planned parenthood attack and the south carolina church shooting have religious connections .

But people blowing themselves up or going on shooting sprees happens much more frequently among the followers of Islam.

December 4, 2015 @ 10:23 AM

There have been 352 mass shootings in 2015 so far. That's just in America.

The overwhelming majority of these mass shootings were not done by Muslims.

And I'll bet those numbers are already out of date. I got them from a Toronto Star story published yesterday.

So…how does everyone feel about what the 2016 Cleveland Indians Blue Jays are starting to look like from the top down? Nothing like having the tradition and winning ways of the team from the “Mistake on the Lake” (Erie, in this case) come to Toronto.

Not saying this as fact...but is there any anti-Semitism going on in the completely over-the-top criticism of Shapiro, like being an outsider etc? Teams hire new people from other orgs ALL THE TIME! This seems to be personal, similar to a lot of the Bettman critique ('New York lawyer'). The team is already better than it was the day after the WS, and no hard judgements can be made till July 31. Remember, for 4.5 years, AA's team was mediocore at best. Not until July of his 5th year did the team contend.

Rob J: you must be new to this blog. I have never seen any sign of racism, or any other "ism" on this blog.

December 4, 2015 @ 4:12 PM

@fourteen
Obviously I meant in general! This blog is excellent and I would never accuse any individual. Plus I'm sure Mike would delete any comments of that nature. It's just that yeah in general I find the criticism of Shapiro way over the top considering he has experience running an mlb team. Some of the general feedback is implying his only previous experience was as a beer vendor and that he isn't legit enough to even knock on the Rogers Centre doors.

Just wondering.........why does Shipiro pronounce his name Shi-pie-ro? Is he ashamed of his heritage? I wouldn't be, Either way, not impressed with the Toronto Indians so far.

Rob J, sorry man. This blog is a rare instance of escape from the generally vile tone of innertoobz discussion sites. I panicked at the thought of our "cafe" being polluted by such low def trash talk.

@Mike

If only once a month would be fine with me, but Cheryl will be lost talking about her STUFF EVERYDAY & her sports teams & her trainer & Kean playing speils.
We all would miss her jargon.
Once every 2 weeks - 1st & 15th of the month for a trier as an option?

Anyone put their Xmas tree up yet? Christmas will be quiet this year but we will do it for our granddaughter. We have three cats, two of whom think they are Sir Edmund Hillary, so we are debating whether to put the bush up this weekend or next weekend.

We have temps in the plus region and this is awesome. The El Nino winter has been kind to us so far and I'd be perfectly happy if it stayed that way all winter.

Good for that Sparks kid to get his first win with a shutout but I figured he'd come back to earth. I'm relieved the Toronto media & fans didn't do their usual build a statue routine after one game. The kid needs some grooming and who knows, maybe he will be a regular NHL'er one day.

I think if you went to once a month or every 2 weeks, you would lose participants Mike. I too was looking forward to a possible return of Open Mike Tuesday's.

Will probably put a Christmas tree next weekend. A little early for a real tree, as I tend to forget to water it after the 3rd or 4th day and the needles would be on the floor by the 25 th.

I definitely would prefer to keep the weekly.

I'm not active on Twitter, but I find myself reading your tweets/replies from your home page, sometimes thinking "that should be blog entry not just a tweet".

The Open Mikes at least give an opportunity for some of those topics to find another home.

December 5, 2015 @ 7:52 AM

Cheryl

Well, my Coyotes lost. My Suns lost and my Nets lost. That's no good. Kean lost the first game, but won the second one handily. My trainer lost the first game, but won the second game. As for Christmas tree, I don't put one up. Why should I. I don't bother.

The Star article wasn't saying so much that they're on the rise, merely that mass shootings in the USA are a daily occurrence.

Here's the link for the curious: http://www.thestar.com/news/world/2015/12/03/where-did-the-worst-mass-shootings-take-place-in-the-us-in-2015.html

Thanks Mike. It's interesting that California and Illinois have the toughest laws .Dig this! Maryland has no constitutional provision granting a right to bear arms.Last time I looked there were 900+ shootings and over 300 homicides in Baltimore alone this year.It's a soul problem! There are not enough laws on earth that will make this go away.

Speaking of the fine Ontario Government, we were over charged for Hydro by $37 billion. Will only get more expensive as the aging infrastructure breaks and is Patched.

Outside in backyard today in a tee shirt. WOW Dec. 5th & 10 degrees.
Usually everybody has their Xmas lights up this time of the year. Very few on our street. I did mine today & will finish tomorrow. Who can get into the spirit with this weather, unless young kids in the household.

Wifey decided late yesterday to take the magic carpet made of steel to see our grandson for his 1st BDay 12/13/14. I couldn't go as she coming home Monday & I'm working.

Climate change for sure.

Okay. I am in a bad mood today. My phone doesn't work. Just when I thought Primus wouldn't go down. My phone went down. I realized it was down last night. Luckily I have my Magic Jack phone so I used it to call Primus. The guy was nice and I got through right away, but he couldn't help me. He told me to call back again when I have someone here so I have a friend coming pretty soon to help me. This isn't making me switch back to Bell. I will not switch back to Bell or switch to Roggers, no way. I want to keep Primus, but why my phone is down, I have no idea. Primus can't send a technician over to check it out. Anyway, my Habs lost which also makes me in a grumpy mood. They should have beaten Carolina. Kean and my trainer both won two and lost two. I have no idea if they're in the playoffs or not. Hopefully my Ravens and Cardinals win today.

Rob J, I am Jewish, and not once did I even remotely think that Shapiro's religion was in any way being used to express anti-semitism. Just passionate Jays fans who wanted the continuity of the season from July onwards to continue on, as the Jays had something very special and unique going on in terms of chemistry, production, and entertainment value, and that was from the top-down.

Now, with Beeston and AA out of the picture and a new management team brought in, doubts are being expressed about the new direction the Jays appear to be going i.e. not going for it in 2016 with full vigour, but trying to win in 2016, but not mortgage their future anymore with draft prospects given up, while sticking to a budget, which does not allow them apparently to make offers on top-line starters, and I am not just referring to Price, but others that have gone already like Zimmerman and Samardzija. Here is a link that shows the starting pitcher signings to date: http://www.spotrac.com/mlb/free-agents/starting-pitcher/

Signing Estrada and Happ is a good start to build depth behind Stroman as your #1. Estrada is the clear #2, and Dickey #3 more due to the innings he logs, and if good Happ from Pittsburgh shows up, he can supplant Dickey as the #3 starter. The jury is still out on how Chavez will be used, as they would like him to be a starter at the bottom of the rotation, but time will tell if he can earn it. I prefer not having to use Sanchez in a starters role, as having Cecil, Sanchez and Osuna in their current roles worked out well, and I expect it to continue to do so. Kansas City showed us how valuable having innings 7-9 covered with shut-down pitchers can win you a World Series, and if not for Cecil being injured, the Jays could have beaten them in the ALCS.

Long way to go until opening day and the roster that heads into the season, so I am not going to rush to judgement, even if my first impressions of Shapiro and Atkins has not been overwhelming to say the least.

December 7, 2015 @ 8:47 AM

Rob J

Excellent analysis, Brian! Finally someone is somewhat accepting the new front office and looking at possible roster spots etc instead of yelling and screaming (Ken Reid).
My quibble is the Royals comparison. The Jays do not have the batting lineup of the Royals and are way too reliant on the homerun...how did that go in the postseason? McCown said it all year long...the Jays didn't get enough hits to overcome a homer drought. KC's lineup was slump-proof because of its versatility and endless resiliency.

December 7, 2015 @ 9:56 AM

Cheryl

Well, my phone is fixed. It was something simple, needed a new power cord. There was no power from my Primus box. My friend had an extra cord so he brought it and it works. As I said, I am not going back to Bell or getting Rogers. This was a one time thing. Primus hardly ever goes down. If they ever do go down, usually unplugging the box and plugging it back in again works. I rarely need to call their customer service. Bell would cause me more problems. Internet was down a lot. They didn't know what they were doing. Well, my Coyotes lost last night. My Suns and Nets lost. My Ravens lost. Good thing my Cardinals won. Kean or my trainer didn't play yesterday. No good at all. They didn't qualify.

Regarding US mass shootings, I thought this was surreal:

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/senate-gop-votes-terrorist-gun-bill-article-1.2454448?cid=bitly

Slippery slope I guess.

December 7, 2015 @ 2:28 PM

Well, my Suns won last night. That's good. Anyway, nothing else really exciting happened in sports. Bruins at Habs tomorrow night which should be a good game. No Price again though, but Condon is pretty good. Condon versus Rask. My Coyotes play tonight at the Blues.

Trump is the sideshow.

December 8, 2015 @ 2:09 PM

@Mike
I don't think the solution is banning all muslims. I do believe the US, Cdn and other countries need to do a better job screening people that come here.

If you listen to his speech again towards the end he's really focusing on the terrible job the US is currently doing in that area and it sounds like he feels they have to resort to something crazy like banning all muslims. If he became Prez, I'm sure he wouldn't follow through with it - along with many of his other promises.

December 8, 2015 @ 2:52 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Argie

I'm sure it would be illegal to implement anyway, as it's unconstitutional.

The way I see it, 45% always vote Republican, 45% always vote Democrat, and 10% choose the President. The more crazy Trump appears, the more likely that 10% votes Democrat in the next election.

I actually think Trump will win the Republican nomination.

December 8, 2015 @ 2:57 PM

Argie

@Mike
Trump is just the anti-Obama. Here in Toronto, after 7 years of the pitiful David Miller, we got Rob Ford. The pendulum sometimes swings a little too hard the other way and Trump's people are hoping to use said pendulum.

December 8, 2015 @ 3:03 PM

@Argie

But in 2010, the anti-Ford vote split and Ford came up the middle to win.

With only two viable candidates in the US, I don't think Trump has a chance.

December 8, 2015 @ 3:07 PM

Argie

@Mike
I think one of two things will happen - either Trump will be forced to quit as a candidate by the GOP or he will soften his stance on some of his "promises."

My Nets won. That's great. My Coyotes lost though. Anyway, Bruins at Habs tonight. Should be a good close game. Habs come out on top of course though. My trainer didn't play last night as his game got canceled. A couple guys were sick. Zones is next weekend, not this weekend. My trainer and Kean are both going to do well and win their zones. They will both be in Provincials. This means one week without my trainer and then another week without him when he goes to the Briar. Oh well.

Habs lost. I wasn't expecting this. They were leading 1 to 0 after two periods, but blew it in the third. Oh well, they will bounce back. They'll win the next one. My Suns won though so am happy about that and it's two days until my birthday. Tomorrow is my birthday eve. Did you know everyone has a birthday eve. Your birthday eve is the day before your birthday. Everyone has one.
