I'm ending my lurking streak because I just read The Brunny might become a Boston Pizza and that's the grossest thing I've ever heard.

If that happens, may God have mercy on our souls.

@The Ripper

What's grosser? Shutting down The Brunswick House and turning it into a Boston Pizza or Black Friday?

@Toronto Mike

Holy shit your podcasts are good. I just finished the Toth episode and loved it. I don't know how you get these people so comfortable they just talk to you and tell you interesting shit.

Anyway, I love it. I even like the Elvis episodes. Keenan was great, too. I tell all my buddies you're the best podcast in the city.

Don't ever stop.

@Tdotter

They're both pretty gross but I think Black Friday is still mainly a MERICA thing. So I'm going with the brunny.

I've got to catch up on the podcasts. I'm used to about one a week but it seems like it's now one a day.

But I'll get there. They're always enjoyable. It amuses me that my favourite broadcaster now is a guy in his basement.

The Brunny was great. So many memories...

I recall many nights as a student slogging over to the Brunny, but what I remember most is the grizzled old server bringing us $1 glasses of re-cycled beer with his nasty sausage fingers fully immersed in 5 glasses at a time moving them from his tray to our table. I also recall drunken 20 year-olds screaming at Irene to belt out Roll Out The Barrel again and again, and when she complied for the seven hundredth time you could almost see the single tear slowly roll down her cheek..

On the podcast front Mike - congratulations. I've only listened here and there but I'll be catching up on some shortly. The popularity of this blog and the 'casts singularly proves how anyone with some creativity and a few pieces of equipment can not only produce compelling content, but challenge and re-invent what we've conventionally viewed as Media. You've truly built a community here and you've done a kick-ass job. Kudos to you.

As for black friday, it is funny how many of us (including myself) tend to shake our heads and look down our noses at the masses who push, shove and strangle to save forty nine bucks on a tv. Someone on 1010 this morning called it the ugly face of capitalism and maybe it is, but it's better than living in North Korea.

Well, more hockey today. My Habs and Coyotes will both win again I hope. Anyway, Carey Price is injured again. He reinjured his same thing that kept him out. Well, now he will be out for a while again. Oh well. My Trainer won on Tuesday so that's good. My trainer has the best team. Lots of unknown teams are in the spiel this weekend and my trainer will win it.

I actually just bought my son headphones online today, because of a Black Friday sale. So if it's stuff you're going to buy anyway, today's a pretty good day to do it. Just don't trample anyone.

Thanks for all the podcast love. It's been fun, and I like to think the more I do it the better I get at it. My comfort level today vs. 3 years ago is night and day.

This week, I think there's something for everybody. There's Ed Keenan for those who like Toronto political talk and hearing about local newspaper scene. There's a visit from my buddies Elvis and Ian to catch up on shit. Then, there's Mike Toth, fired last week from Newstalk 1010 and ready to open up about his days on TSN, Sportsnet, The Fan 590 and 1010. It's pretty honest and compelling stuff.

I've got Adam Growe from Cash Cab visiting tomorrow, and Arash Madani next week. I'll keep doing this until it feels like a job.

It will only feel like a job if you have a boss yelling at you....... or someone like Brian Burke threatens to sue you.

1. Burke really needed to look up the Streisand Effect
2. I doubt those in the neighbourhood will miss the Brunny
3. This November's weather has been fantastic
4. I love Toronto Mike'd too... never miss an episode. Will hear the Toth talk this afternoon. I can't wait for that one.
5. TGIF!

@Toronto Mike,

Just a suggestion, but perhaps endorse some podcast apps on your sign-up page too? Especially for Android, where it's a bit more nebulous.

Which app do you use?

November 27, 2015 @ 11:27 AM

@Toronto Mike,

Personally I use Doggcatcher, but I'm not sure I'd endorse it. Seems to be a bit more of a power-user thing. BeyondPod seems to be the standard.

I've heard good stuff about PocketCasts, but when I tried it on my wife's phone, I promptly returned it for a refund, discovering what a pain it is to create a "virtual feed" -- a feature I use a lot. The virtual feed lets you listen to a downloaded audiobook like you would a podcast.

Was scanning through the FM a couple days ago and was pleasantly surprised to hear The Clash on 102.1, the next day I heard She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult and R.E.M. Interesting. Before The Cult played, there was a station ID voiced by Alan Cross saying "Modern artists wouldn't exist if it weren't for artists like these...this is Vintage Edge"

Mike, any chance you could try and get Norm Kelly on your podcast?

Something could have happened at the Brunswick House
that would have changed the direction of my life
but it didn't
and that's a fact.
So I always look at it as a sort of
missing space.
And I would be sorry if the missing space
was missing.

At UofT in mid 70's, the brunny was a stop every Thursday after class. 3rd & 4th year no classes on Friday.

At 4PM 10 cent drafts & waiter had a tray full & finally saying each give me 3 bucks & I will serve you all night. I left early each Thursday & went back to my Frat house (Sigma Chi) to get car & drive home.

Brunny a lot of great times.

I believe we need a break from Norm Kelly...along with Pinball Clemons, Richard Hatfield, and that bearded hipster in the dozens of Chevy ads.

Well, comeback win for my Habs. Never count them out. Even with no Price, they won it even though they were losing it 2 to 0 at one point. The Devils aren't as good as they think they are. As I said, the Habs are winning the cup this season. coyotes also won as well. That's great. They will be playing against my Habs in the final. My Suns lost though. That's not good. My trainer won their first game. That's great. They got this spiel. They'll win. You'll see.

Cheryl, which bon spiel is your trainer curling? Is it televised?

November 28, 2015 @ 10:16 AM

@Dale

I too am a member of Sigma Chi from the Beta Omega Toronto chapter, and I posted about my Brunny goodtimes above, so it's funny that you and I were probably involved in the same exact university life shenanigans, except 15 years apart.

@Ryan G

WOW. A great time with the Bros & many of us still keep in touch when I was an active in mid 70's.
350 Huron St. rules.

Ted Rogers was a bro also & was an alumni assoc. member with the chapter & met him many times. He donated a lot of $ with the Housing Corp. at that time in Toronto.

A common bond - Blue & Old Gold. In Hoc Ryan.

The spiel my trainer is in is Glendale Cash. It's in Hamilton. No, not televised. My trainer won three games, lost none. Not sure when the playoffs start. Habs lost, but it was in overtime so they get a point. Coyotes won though. That's wonderful. My Nets lost again.

November 29, 2015 @ 11:32 AM

Cheryl

Well, my trainer lost the semifinal yesterday. That was the only game they lost. Too bad. Anyway, they play in Brantford this weekend so maybe they will win it all. My Suns beat the Raptors yesterday, goody. Also my Nets won and my Cardinals won. Hopefully my Ravens win tonight, but they are having a really bad season.

Everyone is Hyped about Sparks in net tonight.
He paid his dues & now time to perform. If he does look out Bernier, U may maybe bought out very soon.

Sparks leads to fire & fire brings rain & rain becomes a better team.

2 bad McDavid isn't playing in his hometown. He succeeds Crosby as the NEXT 1.
I think the Leafs will acknowledge that he is in the arena, much unlike Kessel who didn't deserve as much.

Mike, at the risk of wearing out my welcome, one more try at the Keenan edit.

You explained the legal reason for the cut, but you also said only those in the courtroom are privy to the deets. Can you say what case, what date was the court event?

My Ravens won last night. That's a great thing. Wish they were more wins than losses though. Anyway, I got more junk mail from Bell again. I hate them. They always send me stuff. They are wasting paper. I wish they wouldn't bother. I'm with Primus now and they don't send me any paper stuff at all and they have been rewarded for best customer service. Everyone should get Primus because they are great. Primus hardly ever goes down like Sympatico always went down. Bell is garbage and so is Rogers. I hate them both.

December 1, 2015 @ 9:58 AM

dale

@Cheryl

I'm in the printing business & Bell is one of our major customers. If they don't continue to print their letters, etc., I may become out of a job. Keep it continuing Bell.

December 1, 2015 @ 6:04 PM

Cheryl

I hate junk mail. I am not with Bell anymore. Okay Dale so it would put you out of a job, but why does Bell have to keep printing out junk mail and sending junk mail and Rogers does the same thing. Anyway, my Nets beat my Suns last night. I llike them both so it wouldn't have mattered. My Habs won without Carey Price or Brendan Gallagher. They can do it without all their stars. That's how good they are. My Coyotes lost though.

December 2, 2015 @ 10:06 AM

Cheryl

Well, my Suns lost last night. That sucked. Oh well. Anyway, there is a big curling spiel this weekend in Brantford. Both Kean and my trainer are playing in the same spiel. Fortunately they don't play each other, but I guess could in the playoffs. Maybe my trainer and Kean play in the final and in that case, my trainer will win.
