It's going to be 28C today on the Prairies! I'm working but will do my best to enjoy it anyway. It may be my last chance to wear shorts this year with some actual heat.

I'm a bit concerned about the Jays, not the mini-losing streak, but the fact they have so much difficulty winning low run games. That will come home to roost in the playoffs. It could (and will) be their downfall if they don't sort it out.

@Blind Dave

Agreed. In the playoffs, you can't always bash your way out of trouble.

Having said that, I would have never predicted Marcus Stroman would have come back this strong. He's already our second best starter and that bodes well heading into the playoffs.

To think we played most of this season without Price and Stroman.... no wonder we were a .500 team.

You win. We're sunny and 21 degrees in Trawnna today. But I'll take it.

Random observation: @Toronto Mike, you shared a list of longest episodes of your podcast. It was Eric Smith, Jeff Marek and Strombo.

Can you believe those 3 worked on the same 590 show at that same time?

All true, but Jim Richards was on that same show, and he has the record for shortest appearance on Toronto Mike'd.

Hey Mike. There was a change on the morning show at CHUM this week. Darren has left. Roger addressed it but didn't say much. Any info?

@Mickey

Aw yes, I meant to write about this. I tweeted about it, but haven't mentioned it on the blog yet.

Darren B. Lamb suddenly quit his gig on Roger, Darren and Marilyn, CHUM-FM's lucrative morning show.

Why did Darren up and quit? That's the big mystery... but he's dropped enough hints that it sounds like he's got another gig. I suspect we'll see him pop up shortly.

Darren, of course, took Rick Hodge's spot when Rick bolted for EZ-Rock / CFRB. Rick and I had a long convo about this decision, and you can hear it here: http://www.torontomike.com/2015/03/toronto_miked_podcast_episode_116.html

Random thoughts:

1. Good on CHUM-FM for letting Darren say goodbye. That's rare in radio these days. Classy move.

2. Rick is currently on another Bell station, EZ-Rock in Niagara. You know he'd love his old spot back, and I think the nostalgic fans would eat it up.

3. There are other popular morning show hosts looking for gigs in this city. For example, Maddog... Roger, Jay and Marilyn has a nice ring to it.

4. Roger, who is not as young as he sounds, has no interest in retirement. I asked him myself: http://www.torontomike.com/2015/06/toronto_miked_podcast_episode_126.html

5. I'm betting they promote from within the station. To do that, they'll likely have to break the "2 guys and a gal" formula, because all the other hosts are women!

It'll be interesting to see what they do and where Darren ends up.

September 25, 2015 @ 9:27 AM

Bill Wood

I think this may tell us that Roger is around for a while. I was thinking that Roger may retire and Darren would get that slot. Just conjecture on my part; but Roger has to be thinking of it.

@Bill Wood

It sounds like Roger's eventual retirement will be courtesy of an internal nudge... they'll give him a big sendoff, of course, Lloyd Robertson style.

So yes, I'll bet this move delays that happening... they'll want a strong trio so there's only a 33% change.

Polls, Schmolls

Poll after poll shows a 3-way tie in the Federal election.

Then, out of nowhere, a poll show a majority for Harper.

Polls, shmolls... often dead wrong.

Question for the hive mind. Anybody know where I can get a Blue jays hat for my daughter? North of Eglinton preferably. I'd love to go to the blue jays store at the dome and get an "Authentic " retro cap but Just don't have time. And they are a bit pricey at $42.

September 25, 2015 @ 10:13 AM

Argie

@James
I was in an Old Navy about a month ago and they had Jays hats. May not have been "authentic" but they looked good - and I think it came in youth sizes as well.

Although they don't last long, because of the huge demand, you will find Jays hats and tees at Winners.

September 25, 2015 @ 10:43 AM

Broni

@ James Edgar
I was at the game on Wednesday and the in-stadium Jays Shop has youth caps for $15. A colleague of mine bought one because it fit her head. The adult version of the same cap is $30.
Now, that cap was not retro, it was the current all-blue - so I can't speak to the price of retro versions.

Prime Minister Harper said in the debate 60 countries are fighting ISIS.
Wow. That's more than fought Nazi Germany and involves the same 'alliance.'
That ISIS fleet of white, Toyota pickup trucks must have secret Warlock
powers. Nobody was fast enough on their feet to ask the Prime Minister why an alliance of 60 countries with satellite capabilities, drones, etc... can't defeat ISIS. They don't have Panzer divisions, a Luftwaffe, a powerful navy, a massive industrial base, etc...

September 25, 2015 @ 10:55 AM

ISIS is a few thousand militants that can't be defeated by surrounding nations and others of millions? There's more here than meets the eye. Why would interested parties want wars to end? Invent an 'enemy' and the $$ rolls in

Any comments on the Patrick "Kandy" Kane situation?
It's becoming a comedy of BS.

Great hockey player, but air between his ears still living the life as an 18 year old.
Innocent until found guilty, I don't beleive it in this situation. JMO.

I may pick him in the 10th round of our annual hockey draft, but points don't for the Steel Bar Hotel League.

So......the pope offers condolences to his muslim" brothers" on the death of over 700 muslims. Why? Isn't there a line in a christian prayer that says, "thy will be done on earth...." Ergo, it is god's will that these people died. Isn't religion a wonderful unifying force? To quote George Carlin, "Somebody made this shit up." " Worship Joe Pesci....................he gets things done!" (Another Carlin line.)

Anyone else notice the number of very young (homeless?) women begging at off ramps, always accompanied by a dog?
I have seen 5 or 6 in the last month. 2 on the Trafalgar/QEW ramp, one seems to work the east side, the other the west at different times.
One was standing on the median at the stop lights on Queensway just north of Sherway, right across from the Bier Market restaurant. Watched her beg for several hours a few Fridays ago.
Two I saw this week in Ottawa one at the Parkdale exit on the 417 and another around Metcalfe. May have been the same girl and dog though, just different days.
Not sure why this trend is happening, but having a daughter around the same age, concerns me.

Wish some of my neighbours would realise that putting your green bin out the night before is almost a 100% chance it will be dumped by the morning. It is always the same people doing it, if they did the math, it takes longer to clean the mess up the next morning , than putting your bin out then.

Well, still here. I got on a lot later than usual. Other things going on. Anyway, How about those Orioles. Another win but my Diamondbacks lost. I said in the last open Mike there is no Cardinals game, but they do play on Sunday, so Ravens and Cardinals will win. Yes, it is time for my Ravens to win and my Cardinals will be 3 and 0.

Yes! weird that you should mention it. I've driven the same roads to work now for years and this is the first summer I have seen this phenomena. One girl just off the 407 at dufferin (no doggy). And a guy/girl combo at Dufferin/Steeles. These ones are very aggressive - actually knocked on my window a few times. Last week, three out of five days, there was a girl at Islington and Queensway.

Interesting. Canadian milk is hormone free (to my knowledge). US milk is not hormone free. Just advertising that will put the breaks on US milk.

Off topic, but KFC advertises it's chicken is hormone free (I think it's hormones). Then underneath the mention is that all chicken is hormone free in Canada.

@Dale

I don't think so. There may be some interest in Western Canada but it's nothing like Toronto. Personally I find the whole thing a joke. The jays could have folded and left for Buffalo 2 years ago. No one would have given a shit. Now, suddenly they're "Canada's Team".

A long time ago I was a sports fan. I have no interest in most team sports. I'm fine with people that like sports but sneer a bit at the bandwagon fans. 2 years from now the Jays will be a marginal team again & there will be no interest

I see those bandwagon fans like I see people who take their Mac computer to a cafe and sit there to be notice. If you can code an app in Objective C++, you get my attention. If you can write a program which interfaces with the BSD kernel, well I'm impressed. Who can't like BSD? But when you buy into something solely because it's the thing to do, well it's just fucking lame as fuck.

It's overcast where I am. Can't see anything but clouds and mountains so no moon view for me. Too bad, the air is very clear here.

@Maybe

The outrage at the whole hijab/niqab thing is overblown. I've noticed a fake license with a woman with her face covered now circulating on Facebook. Fact is you show your face for your license photo. And you show your face for citizenship. You do not have to show your face at the CEREMONY.

The problem is our social media/sound byte generation. They swallow what is fed to them and spend all of 2 seconds actually reading anything. The mantra of the modern person is tl:dr (too long; didn't read). Investigating anything just takes too much time.

I spent 3 years, amongst other things, doing data mining on the internet. I was taught to question what I found, never get tunnel vision & notice what I saw. I saw many things. And what I see is a society that doesn't give a single fuck about the truth or fact. Fact = their opinion. Right wing, left wing, wrong wing. My favourite was people who quote the media as "fact" LOL. Modern media is purely conjecture, even the so called "journalists".

@Moo. One of the most powerful trends in the world is the move toward healthy food, especially in Western society. An influx of poor quality US milk will not go unnoticed. In fact, I'd say you'll see a full out shit storm.

September 28, 2015 @ 10:40 PM

moo

Good points @ Mr. Robot. I've noticed some individual States in the United States are passing legislation under pressure from citizens i.e. 'consumers' for food manufacturers to label foods as GMO or non-GMO and federal regulations are contradicting (forbidding?) this right to know. Imagine not having the right to know what one is eating.

September 29, 2015 @ 9:24 AM

Mr Robot

@Moo

A few years back Calgary grocer "CO OP" notified egg producers it would cease buying eggs from caged chickens. The market scoffed at it, but now A&W and even McDonalds is moving leaning that way. There are many countries, including Germany, which are banning GMO's as well. Companies like McDonalds & Subway, long the purveyors of garbage food are facing rough oceans with McDonalds actually closing locations.

I've noticed this resurgence in old timer skills like gardening, preserving & canning food & even smoking meat. It's sold as a hipster type thing but really it's just going back to our roots of how we have always lived. Here's hoping we'll see a return to old fashioned cooking in the future.

How to vote strategically to get rid of Harper: http://www.strategicvoting.ca/

September 29, 2015 @ 11:55 PM

Jody Thornton

@fed up:

While I applaud anything to get Harper out of power, I'm not sure that an organization such as this isn't attempting to undermine the voting process. There is a strong Conservative voter base that would find this insulting. And I'm not looking to vote in an unorganized coalition just to unseat the Conservatives. I want to vote as I choose.

There should be a way to capture the popular vote and use that to elect the party leader to power, all the while electing seat holders in each riding. That would be fair.

Additionally, I think that poor voter turnout exacerbates the problem. That 40% of the population that doesn't vote might help to make a big difference. Maybe there are plenty of Green supporters in there. As long as people are engaged enough with the process and have a feeling about the direction they want the country to move in, they should vote.

September 30, 2015 @ 12:37 AM

fed up

@ Jody Thornton,
The (ex-Progressive) Conservatives and Reform [CRAP] alliance certainly joined forces to increase their numbers. And the Reform takeover happened in a very underhanded manner (see David Orchard's lawsuit against Peter Mackay for breaking his word) so at least this is aboveboard.
And it may encourage voting by those desperate to save our democracy. I would find it difficult to vote for my second choice but perhaps this is a way to create a Proportional Representation system in lieu of the actual.

September 30, 2015 @ 9:36 AM

Cheryl

Well, my Orioles got rained out. At least they didn't lose. My Diamondbacks won though so that's good. Anyway, some idiot in my building has a problem in his place with the hot water coming out of the cold water tap and cold water out of the hot water tap on his bidet. Who uses bidets these days anyway. I didn't even know people had them here. Anyway, the plumber wants to install new taps in my kitchen because that might help the other guy's bidet. I don't think it will. My taps are okay. He says I won't have to pay which is nice that I won't, but it's going to be unnecessary time for someone to do work in my place that probably is not necessary and just interrupting. Anyway, so I have to be involved in this guy's problem with the bidet. Bummer.

Well, Orioles really lost big in the first game. They won the second game handily though. The second game was great. Chris Davis hit two homers. Also Manny Machado hit one and also Matt Wieters hit one. That's great. Anyway, my Diamondbacks won as well. A week from yesterday and my Habs play the Leafs. Season opener will be great with the Habs winning. Anyway, I tried to get out of this plumbing stuff, but the plumber said there is a problem in several other apartments and so they need to install new kitchen taps for me. This means that on Wednesday I have to have about two hours of plumbing work done and who knows, it may solve the problem or it may not. I don't understand why my taps have to do with someone's bidet. Anyway, hopefully my Ravens will win tonight. I need this win. I don't want them to lose every game.
