Did anyone watch the debate yesterday? Did I miss anything exciting?

September 18, 2015 @ 8:17 AM

Re: The debate
Harper was Harper
Mulclair was strong
Trudeau imploded

@Sam: You missed nothing. Most Canadians didn't watch and what there was to watch wasn't worth it. By far a terrible forum and overall debate.

September 18, 2015 @ 8:33 AM

Jesse Brown is crapping on the CBC for not carrying the debate yesterday.

But it was a Globe debate and they branded it to hell and gone.

They're under no obligation to carry a Globe-branded debate.

September 18, 2015 @ 10:27 AM

I liked the part of the debate where they played Public Enemy's first album.

September 18, 2015 @ 10:29 AM

The debate:

- Prime Minister: nine years in that position. Master degree in Economics. Ontarian moved to Alberta, back in Ontario as nation's PM. Hence, the first PM in nearly 30 years to not be both a lawyer and from Québec. Generally dull but experienced, capable and reasonably consistent, albeit controlling - one version of "leader".

- Leader of the Opposition: Lawyer from Québec. Has sought membership or been a member of almost every major political party provincially or federally at some point in time. Citizen of Canada and France. Can be compelling to listen to, as he can present well, but research and facts can be questionable. Tendency to get loud and bombastic when someone disagrees with him. Another version of "leader".

- Leader of the third party: Born into a political family, son of a former prime minister (who is either loved or utterly despised by Canadians, depending upon where you are in the country). Party chose him as leader for his last name and youth. Arts and education undergraduate degrees. Energetic, compelling to many, appears to have great difficulty thinking on his own and speaking without notes, resulting in inconsistent messaging and decision making capability. Voice raises in pitch when his weaknesses are pointed out. May be the leader of the third party, but doesn't seem to be much of a leader.

That seems to sum up more than just the debate, actually.

The Blue Jays game was far more interesting.

I didn't watch a minute of the debate last night.

My daughter had a soccer match, and after that I watched the rest of the Jays game. It was an easy call, quite frankly.

September 18, 2015 @ 10:38 AM

Agree completely.

Then again, some people vote primarily for the party or their local MP before they consider party leader.

September 18, 2015 @ 10:40 AM

I watched jays until I figure they'd win, then started binge watching Vikings on Shomi. It's quite good, and it's interesting because the show makes you empathize with the main characters..and then you feel conflicted when they start rapin' and pillagin' and stuff.

September 18, 2015 @ 10:40 AM

I'm almost ambivalent nowadays because I'm not into beer like I once was, but holy hell the grocery store six-pack plan is another example of ridiculous government meddling, lobbying, and anti-consumer policy:

Takeaway is with the new rules, grocery stores will only be permitted to sell 279 six-packs a day as a concession to the foreign-owned Beer Store.

Also the price is going up $1. Thank the government for high prices and an LCBO monopoly to keep society away from the brink of collapse.

(Sidenote, I do love microbrewery beer ... but I do not like being overweight and the effect on my savings.)

September 18, 2015 @ 10:44 AM

How about those Orioles. Wonderful. They were losing 3 to 0, but had a great eighth inning comeback and they won 4 to 3. That's wonderful so they still have a chance. My Diamondbacks didn't play last night. Well, Kean lost last night. Gardner beat them badly. That was no good at all. Hopefully they win the next one. Team Kean is the best other than my trainer's team. The only timie I will not cheer for Kean is if they play my trainer's team.

September 18, 2015 @ 10:45 AM

The globe analyzed their own debate. Seems like the paper that endorsed the conservatives the last two elections has shift back to the liberals.

The end result of last nights debate. Those people who didn't like the other two guys won't have their mind changed. Those people already decided on who they would vote for think their guy won.

September 18, 2015 @ 10:52 AM

I think the leaders could also be described as:

Harper: Lying sack of shit.
Mulcair: Wants to be the lying sack of shit.
Trudeau: Can't figure out what type of lying sack of shit he wants to be.
May: Tweeted about not being there.

Or maybe I am just jaded.

All one needs to do is watch Conservative MP Paul Calandra's atrocious display of arrogance & disrespect to understand why Mr. Harper & his minions must be shown the door. Frankly the Cons manner of governing is an insult to all Canadians.

Is Kevin Page also a 'lying sack of shit?'

OTTAWA—Former parliamentary budget officer Kevin Page will play a role in ongoing efforts by the New Democrats to convince Canadians they can be trusted to manage the economy.

Page will deliver a speech at the NDP caucus strategy session this Friday, in which he plans to undermine the idea that the Conservatives have been sound fiscal managers while in government.

“I think it has been a great confabulation, that they are great fiscal managers,” Page, now a political studies professor at the University of Ottawa, said in an interview Wednesday.

For reasons unknown I looked at the CFNY playlist early today. I was "stunned" to see that Alessia Cara - Here was in the Top 5.

Alessia is a 17 year old girl from Brampton Ontario. She's a soul singer and is Canada's "Adele". She came into my playlist because Zane Lowe, former God of music at BBC Radio 1, now the boss of Beats 1 at Apple radio played her. Took 1 single listen to think "wow". Always good to see a British DJ finding Canadian music first....

Anyway, at first I thought "weird" but then I thought about it. CFNY played Adele, it played Tori Amos, it played Sarah McLaughlin. It played Kate Bush. Women with voices. I'm sure I'm missing another half dozen females.

Good on 102.1.

September 18, 2015 @ 11:20 PM

The election landscape has become a sort of Bizzaro land, with the NDP lecturing us about what great fiscal managers they are, Harper wants us to trust the guys like Duffy who couldn't manag etheir own expense accounts, let alone the country, and all the while Harper's minions are being dispatched to phone into every little radio station talk show in the country to speak condescendingly about "Justin" and how the party that finally DID balance budgets, oh so many years ago, can't possibly understand economics. I was extremely disappointed in Mulcair last night, addressing Trudeau by his first name while calling the PM "Mr. Harper" - gamesmanship and a lack of respect that is expected from the arrogant Tories, but quite a step downwards for the party that traditionally takes an ideological high road. Angry Tom must have had a visit from the guy with the pitchfork, who cut him a deal -"I'll help you win this election... it will just cost you your soul... just sign here..."

September 19, 2015 @ 12:13 AM

My Orioles lost. That's no good. JJ Hardy hit a three run homer so they were leading, but they ended up losing. My Diamondbacks won though and that was great. Rubby De La Rosa pitched a gem. Kean lost big last night. They won the second game, but then Glenn fricken Howard won again last night and beat Kean badly. That really sucks. Kean has two more games today. They better win them to have a chance. I don't want them to go in a slump. Ravens and Cardinals will win the football games tomorrow.

September 19, 2015 @ 7:21 AM

Alessia Cara's Here has been spinning in my place for months now. :)

My 11-year old daughter insisted upon it. It's a great single.

September 19, 2015 @ 8:26 AM

Well, how about those Orioles. Wei-Yin Chen pitched a gem. Awesome winning 2 to 1. My Diamondbacks won as well. Kean didn't win. They lost to Balsdon. Balsdon has changed a lot. My trainer had friends on that team, but it changed. Anyway, they shouldn't have beaten Kean, but they did. Anyway, football today. Cardinals and Ravens will win. That would be great.

1 of my son's at a golf tourney today for Suicide Prevention week in memory of 1 of his best freinds who died 4 years ago. Having a tournament in memory of Brandon. He hasn't played golf in a few years & I gave him my clubs & lots of balls to have a good time. Son also has depression problems but better now.

BTW - he gave up tiks for today's Jays game for this tourney.

Depression hits hard with me at home. My 1 son is doing a lot better but I still wake up in middle of the night to make sure he is sleeping. He's 23 yrs. old.

Yesterday the NHL lost another player with depression & then suicide.
Todd Ewen & in the past Steve Montador, Derek Boogard, Rick Rypien, Wade Belak, Bob Probert.

Life is a challenge overall. Going forward this situation will be a focus of mine as I get older.

Alessia Cara got her first airplay and the legendary KEXP FM out of Seattle in 2014. KEXP is a true independent FM station with the focus on Indie/Alternative but plays all types of formats from gangster rap to urban jazz. It's much like Alberta's CKUA.

It was Beats 1 that really introduced me to Alessia. I've been a fan of Zane Lowe for over a decade and he has an uncanny musical ear. Beats 1 was playing the song in rotation from day 1 and I was hooked.

Surprised no one mentioned Beats 1 on this forum. And incredibly good & diverse music station that recognizes formats shouldn't exist. It's got all the "good" of what FM radio had without the burned out playlist with the same 100 songs.

I'm about to buy a new vehicle and look forward to all the new digital options for music built into the car. SiriusXM right in the dash, the ability to hook up and stream stations on your iPhone & play in the vehicle. No more having to tolerate the shit they play on FM radio (CKUA and CBC aside).

@Mr Robot: I heard Here first on the NPR station the Current out of Minneapolis MN before I heard it on any Canadian stations. Glad she is getting good air play in her home market. What a soulful voice for a 17 year old!

September 20, 2015 @ 9:38 PM

Mr Robot

@Rick C

Yeah, so much for Canadian Radio supporting Canadian Music lol. I'm no longer in range of corporate FM radio except the static in the car. I don't miss any of it.

Try these songs out: Spring King - City. First song played on Beats 1 and should be in high rotation on every FM modern rocker out there. And who can't like a video with a dark haired hot cheerleader with a gun.

Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best.

"give me all your money and I'll make some origami, honey".

And of course you've heard this song...which did it's job and had me go take a look at the Jeep Renegade line up. #LongLiveThePioneer

The world is full of brilliant music. Just you'll won't hear much of it on FM radio

September 20, 2015 @ 10:29 PM

Mr. Robot, where/how do I find "Beats 1"?

September 20, 2015 @ 10:39 PM

Mr Robot

Beats 1 is the "worldwide radio station" that is part of Apple Music. It's free to stream but I only listen to it on my iPhone. I "think" It's available in iTunes and heard it was coming to Android but I really don't know. They don't make iTunes for Linux.

Beats 1 has 3 main DJ's. The first is Zane Lowe, who replaced John Peel on BBC Radio 1 (think Jesus) and was hired by Apple. The second is this UK chick Julie Adenuga & afternoon drive is this hiphop dude named "Ebro". Elton John has a show on the station as does Dr Dre. There is a request show too & this blog live radio thing.

The format seems to bounce all over the place too. The DJ's are masters at their trade and it shows. It's not for people who like formatted FM radio.

Irony: KEXP is playing K'naan - ABC where Chubb Rock mentions "ganga". The station blocked out the word yet weed is legal in Washington state. #Murica

September 20, 2015 @ 10:57 PM

Mr Robot

And that would be gangja, not ganga.

September 20, 2015 @ 10:59 PM

Well, my Orioles lost. That was no good. Zach Britton lost the game. He blew a save and lost the game. My Diamondbacks lost as well. My Cardinals won, but my Ravens lost. My Ravens aren't doing well. They keep losing 0 and 2. My Cardinals are doing well winning their first two games.

September 21, 2015 @ 10:58 AM

Sad day when elections Canada has to have training on identifying voter suppression tactics. You know the ones the right wing a holes in the US are fond of and the conservatives here are foaming at the mouth to use.

How about those Orioles. They won again. Ubaldo Jimenez pitched a great game. My Diamondbacks also won and that's a great thing. Anyway, my Orioles still have a chance at the wild card. I think they will make it and then you never know. Oh, hockey starts in a couple weeks. Habs over Leafs in the opener. It's the Habs cup this year. They'll do it.

How about those Orioles. Another great win. Manny Machado with a two run homer game winner. A win for Chris Tillman. My Diamondbacks didn't do so well as they lost. Another football weekend coming up. My Cardinals don't play, but my Ravens play the Bengals. My Ravens will win. It's about time.
