Where's the love for Degrassi, cancelled after 14 seasons!

'told ya'

Whoever thought John Tory would be even weirder than Rob Ford? At this stage of his mandate four years ago, Ford was striding triumphantly from one success to another while his left-wing opposition sat on its hands, stunned into quiescence. But today, the supposedly sensible, rational, moderate John Tory stumbles around City Hall like a blind man in an earthquake of his own making.

Great article by John Barber in Torontoist today.

Good Luck to Canada's Women's Soccer Team. No matter what you think of Soccer, this is always an exciting tournament.

I never used to watch Degrassi, but I was lucky enough to go see a taping of the big budget Canadian game show Definition hosted by Jim Perry. The audience consisted of my dad and I and some senior's group they bused in, who didn't know what the hell was going on or where they were.

Let me guess - the winning prize was a coffee maker. A "Mr Coffee" coffee maker at that.

@Argie

It was a toaster oven and knives.

I distinctly remember looking off to the side of the main set, where a 50-something unionized tv production guy sat alone at a table holding a stopwatch, and on the table a microphone pointing at one of those little metallic bells you see at crappy motel reception desks. Who needs an automated sound effect when you can pay some schlub a handsome salary to ding a bell.

Well, Orioles won yesterday. Finally a win, but they need many more. The Astros are in my pool as well, but so glad my Orioles won. Diamondbacks lost though. That was not a good thing. Royals lost. Cardinals won. Tigers lost. Rays won. It was a so so night for my pool.

4x4 Time

What does the hivemind think of Jerry Howarth’s criticism of Reyes this week? I have no problem with him calling out Reyes for his play, but to comment that he smiles too much during the game, strikes me as weird and petty.

Ryan G / hobogauntlet.blogspot.ca

4x4, I didn't hear that, but along the same lines, it does bug me how casual and non-competitive baseball players often are.

You see it all the time at 1st base in particular when someone gets a single. "Hey man how's the wife and kids?" and all. If i'm the 1st baseman i'd be pissed this guy's got a single.. not asking him to come to a bbq on my yacht this weekend.

Toronto the kind?

Happy Friday. Today, I wanted to talk about road manners. Getting to work this morning, I was kindly allowed to merge by 5 "first contact" cars. That was a first! What I mean by first contact is, the car that is in the next lane and has the opportunity to let you merge onto their lane when you first hit your indicator.

Normally, we have to wait maybe 6-10 cars in a queue before a decent fellow motorist will let us in. Or, we just jam our way in. Now, I always thank my fellow drivers but today especially, I stuck my hand out the sunroof to each one to say "thanks!"

I'm not sure if it's the warmer weather, the "Friday fever" or what, but it was a welcome surprise. I think we could all be a bit better and more considerate to one another sharing the roads in this city. Now for the Pan Am games and more gridlock! Hooray!

I'm a massive soccer fan. Not of FIFA, FIFA has done it's best to ruin the game.

The news coverage on this has been amazing. It is and always has been a network of corruption to highest degree. I hope the axe falls swift and hard on all these guys especially Blatter, Warner and lord of the rings chuck blazer.(the guy who had a penthouse suite at the Trump towers just for his cats)

Jennings the grass roots reporter who got the ball rolling on this did a terrific job. It looks like he'll get the last laugh for going without paycheques and the threats against his life for trying to expose FIFA for what it is.

In case anyone missed things before Blatter stepped down, this piece from John Oliver is fantastic.

I haven't seen it but I've heard Jeremy Schaap's E:60 doc on ESPN is supposed to be terrific. It came out a few weeks before the shit hit the fan on Blatter & co.

All that I can say to this is GOOD. I know Tim Hortons is no longer a Canadian company, but they do their utmost to promote themselves as part of the Canadian fabric. To me, a fabric that is forever entwined with what Canadians were given on Earth: resources. Nothing like an American behind the petition that led Tim Hortons to pull the Enbridge ads in their stores. Let's see Tim Hortons run their stores without oil and natural gas, more than likely supplied or delivered at least in part by Enbridge. Hi. Thank you for your interest in the position of "resident political troll". We have received your application. At this time, the position is currently filled by in-house service. However, we will keep your application on file should this position open again.

Again, thank you for your interest, and please go fellate a chainsaw because people like you make the Internet a horrible place.

Someone needs to point out to our ill-informed friend Lorne that those words are John Barber's (an anti-Ford, hardcore liberal journo) and not the poster.

Trolls quote columnists such as John Barber (above). Trolls introduce subject matter for discussion. Trolls make the internet a horrible place. Trolls are interested in civic issues. Trolls are interested in urban design. Trolls are interested in what happens to the Gardiner Expressway.

June 5, 2015 @ 1:51 PM

Of course trolls are interested in the Gardiner Expressway! They want to live under it!

The Sane Voice

I honestly think I'm going to be sick. This CAN'T happen again, can it??

The LRT, Smart Track, DRL, Eastside Bayfront…these are ALL 100-year decisions, and the man is ignoring staff advice like it was printed on leprosy.

People...SOMEONE is corralling this man, SOMEONE obviously has gained his trust and his ear…how the hell do we contain them?? How do we box in the Mayor and his counsel/crony/special interest groups/puppeteers so that they do the least amount of damage and the most amount of good? Whose balls have to be squeezed so that they put pressure on Tory to do the right thing? And how do we do that immediately, and not wait for two years like we did when we were all befuddled by (and frankly a little scared of) Ford??

Could it be as simple as making life unbearably difficult for all our councillors? Or leaning on the brightest lights in the cocktail set to muck-about on the gossip circuit?? Or do have to target the businesses that Tory/his supporters have long been allied with? Or all three? Because this really can't be allowed to happen again.

June 5, 2015 @ 6:06 PM

On one hand, Tory's made me incredibly cynical about politics yet again.

On the other, I'm guessing virtually every politician has been shit for the last 4000 years or so, and yet somehow society marches on. Maybe a few notable leaders here and there, but otherwise a vast swath of mediocrity.

@Douglas. Have been in Alberta the last 2 weeks and this has been fodder for the radio talk shows, even heard tonight on as it happens Carol Off debating with a local MLA, that it wasn't American influenced. Hard to tell who to believe anymore on these issues. Lobbying in the USA is almost a national sport these days.
Not to defend or malign John Tory but we all had a sense he was a middle of the road type of politician, you never satisfy everyone with the decisions made. It is always polarized no matter what way you look at it

I have just posted two old radio clips. One has Pete Griffin on CHUM FM in 1975
( with a bit of Geets) and the other is Dani Elwell on The CKFM Saturday night dance show from 1985. Who remembers that ?

Listen here:

Cheryl

I remember Pete Griffin. Talk about the good old days. The only bad thing was that I had to go to boarding school and for some reason I couldn't get Chum FM when I was in Brantford so that sucked, but if I was sick or had a holiday, it would be gtreat to listen to Pete Griffin. Yes, gridlock during Pan Ams. If my trainer can't make it during those times, I won't see him from July 3 to 28. It will suck. If he can make it, I will see him on July 14. Why do we have to have stupid Pan Ams anyway. It's not going to do anything. How about those Orioles. Great win for my orioles and great win for my Diamondbacks. Adam Jones homers again. Chris Tillman won finally. I did so so in my pool. Royals lost. Astros lost. Angels lost. Tigers, Cardinals, Pirates, and Giants all won.

Orioles lost yesterday. That was such a pathetic game. Manny Machado homered, but that's it. Diamondbacks won though. That's a good thing. Royals lost, but Tigers finally won. I said they won yesterday, but correction, they lost. Rays won. Giants won, but Nationals, cardinals and Pirates all lost. It was not a great pool day. Anyway, I am really honestly not looking forward to Pan Ams. I will especially be upset if my trainer can't make it. If he doesn't make it, that means it will be three weeks without him or more. It would mean I would see him last on July 2 and not until July 28. Then there would be para Pan Ams coming up and then I wouldn't see him from August 7 to 18. It will suck. Are they going to have events 24 7? I sure as hell hope not.

June 7, 2015 @ 7:49 AM

and

Very much enjoy this paragraph in an architect's letter to the Star today re: Gardiner.

''Tearing down the eastern Gardiner would create a beautiful waterfront for our city. It is already there, where the Don River is channelled into Lake Ontario. Just imagine what it will be like as a canal, lined with shops and restaurants — the type of place people want to be.'

June 7, 2015 @ 6:42 PM

Lorne

@markosaar: It was hard not to punch myself in the face recording that episode. =) Glad you enjoyed it.

June 7, 2015 @ 8:36 PM

Cheryl

Well, Oriols won. That was great. Homers by Adam Jones and Mat Wieters. Wonderful. My Diamondbacks lost though. That was no good at all. I got wins from the Royals, Tigers, Rays, Cardinals and Pirates An okay pool day. Anyway, the Pan-Ams will probably have events 24 7 every day. The thing is why can't all events be in one spot instead of scattered all over the place. Who knows. Why not just cancel the Pan-\Ams. We do not need them.

June 8, 2015 @ 5:28 AM

Cheryl

Well, my Orioles didn't play last night, but my Diamondbacks lost. That was no good. The Royals won last night which is good for my pool, but nobody else won. Astros lost. Cardinals and Pirates lost. It sucked. Anyway, I need a good night tonight.

June 9, 2015 @ 9:50 AM

Cheryl

Well, my Orioles won last night. It was close 1 to 0, but I think Miguel Gonzalez got hurt which is not a good thing. My Diamondbacks lost as well. Anyway, some sad news. Jack, the guy who I am doing the pool with got very confused. Well, I thought he was confused before, but apparently it got so bad that 911 had to be called. Anyway, I don't know what will happen to my pool.

June 10, 2015 @ 6:35 AM

again?

Today's Torontoist: re Tory's speech yesterday.

But some of his facts and arguments do not add up. Some claims were disingenuous, and others were outright false. We went through the speech to separate fact from fiction in advance of tomorrow’s council session, where the issue will be debated; those familiar with our fact-checks will recognize that Tory’s mendacity in this speech was greater than any we have checked since Rob Ford’s 2014 speech to the Economic Club—not a mark to which one should aspire.

June 10, 2015 @ 9:21 AM

Cheryl

Orioles are on a roll. This is great. Another win. My Diamondbacks lost though. Anyway, fricken Pan-Ams. They're going to start making these HOV lanes at the end of this month and they won't go away until some time in the middle of August after the para Pan-Ams. I do not want fricken Pan-Ams. Wish I could just hide in a hole until they go away. My trainer is only one person in his car so he won't be able to use the HOV lane.
