In the latest iteration of Tim Horton's Roll Up The Rim campaign, I have set an astounding new personal record. Of the approximately ten or so cups of coffee I've purchased, I've won an item four times, which is unprecedented. But that's not the record. That distinction lies with the fact that, of the four little winning tabs I've torn off the cups, I've lost every single one of them.

The cynic in me suggests that Tim Horton's feel my winning percentage is unacceptable and has snuck into my pants to retrieve said tabs, likely doing so under my desk while I'm at work. Which of course leads to the obvious lesson - never wear pants.

A bowl of oatmeal on a cold winters day is one of life's pleasures.

I'm also 120 years old.

Glen, I had cream of wheat! It's the simple things . . .

March 6, 2015 @ 9:03 AM

How anyone can eat oatmeal is beyond me. I find it has the consistency and taste of vomit.

March 6, 2015 @ 9:08 AM

On cold days, my grandparents used to eat something that they called "gravel": Bran Flakes with hot water, as opposed to milk.

I always thought it was pretty disgusting, and in fact, I still do.

Why wasn't Don Berns's death acknowledged by the big four: Star, Globe, Sun and Post?

On a related note, there's some significantly older woman online who has a youtube page where all she does is cook old-timey hobo recipes from when she was po as a youngster. I'd look up the link but that stinks of effort.

I find it odd as well that Don Bern's passing wasn't acknowledged.

Oatmeal (Robin Hood rolled oats, large flake, 5 minute cook) every weekend for our house. Add brown sugar, apple sauce and cinnamon.
It really fills you up and you're good until lunch!
None of that pre-packaged stuff. That stuff is nasty.
I'd like to be a purest and cook the Scottish steel oats, but I'm not a fan of the chewy-ness.

My 11 month old loves Robin Hood rolled oats cooked for 5 minutes. We smoosh in banana.

March 6, 2015 @ 10:24 AM

@Mike @Gump

I love Quaker large flake oats , cook for 5-10 minutes, and add a teaspoon of honey, cinnamon, and apple slices. I didn't have an apple this morning so I added some shredded coconut.

Funny you ask the "matches" question. I asked the same thing via Twitter just yesterday!

@stoakleyaudio I’ve wondered… is it a match or a game in the world of curling?

The answer, by the way, is this:

My question of the day is: Why do people believe that Obama is ruining America when since he has taken office he has increased job numbers significantly. Especially in the last 2 years, to the point where the jobless number is at 5.5, with growth predicted at 3% per year(first time in over a decade). Sure there is some anger with Obamacare, but isn't a president, prime minister, king etc. judged by economic growth. I now I'm putting things in their simplest form, but I'm pretty sure Canada would be happy to have those numbers currently.

March 6, 2015 @ 11:09 AM

Oatmeal is disgusting and so is cream of weat. Yuck and more yuck. It was forced down my throat when I was at boarding school. Don't ever make me eat that stuff. Anyway, my Habs lost again last night. My Coyotes won though, but they won't make the playoffs. The Leafs lost which is good. My Nets didn't play last night. My Suns are at my Nets tonight, my two favourite teams. Wonderful. How about those Orioles. They won over the Rays and the Jays last night and they play the Jays this afternoon. My Diamondbacks also won. It will be an Orioles Diamondbacks World Series this year. Kean won both games yesterday, but it's too little too late. They are not in the playoffs and maybe Menard won't make it. They lost yesterday as well. I am not going to win the pool, but I'll win the baseball pool.

March 6, 2015 @ 11:45 AM

How the economy performs is part of his job evaluation. Yes, the US economy has done well but when it comes to foreign policy and domestic issues, he fails miserably. Not just in the eyes of conservatives like me but also his more liberal fans (eg. failure to close Gitmo, NSA spying controversy, his rather liberal use of drones).

Getting back to the economy, he has benefited (as has Canada) from the fact Europe is in a mess. Outside of Germany, no investor wants to go there or buy its currencies. The US market and its dollar is gold now because of Europe's issues which inevitably helps job numbers and other stats.

I agree. O. brought the country back from the brink and the disaster that was the 2008 Bush depression. The Health law unfortunately was obstructed by the republicans. In the end what they got was a very watered down version of something trying to be universal and they ( the republicans) continue to fight even that with various court challenges. The law is headed back to the Supreme Court again and that could be the end of it with this court who have essentially been the upholders of big biz republicanism over the last 15 years. Remember Bush vs Gore and "Citizens United" the latter treating corporations as people and allowing unlimited corporate wealth into election campaign financing.

The answer to your question is two fold:

1. Big Business and corporations that want to eliminate the few controls remaining on their unchecked power

2.The Ignorant, uninformed Palinesque bigots who want their country back from the secret Muslim Communist takeover. Funny that some of the policies supported by the Democrats have actually been to the right of the conservative party here in Canada but that's how far the political goal post has moved in the states. O has done what he can in a broken political environment.

March 6, 2015 @ 12:05 PM

I don't think Obama has been (or will be remembered as) a great president. I wouldn't say he's failed miserably, rather that he seemed to have such great potential and turned out to be pretty average.

Generally I think politicians get too much credit/blame when it comes to the overall state of the economy.

March 6, 2015 @ 12:08 PM

Obama hasn't been a great president.

Yes, Congress has tried to stop him at every turn but he has never handled it well. He started out too soft and thought he could work with them and then that failed.

Obama isn't the worst president and he isn't the best. But he is in office so his opponents will call him the worst and try to thwart him at every pass. That's the way it works. It just appears that in this cycle the Tea Party mentality is stronger.
But don't forget, they tried to impeach Clinton too.

My 18 year old son and I had a fantastic evening yesterday. Dear Rouge opened for the Arkells at The Venue in Peterborough. We had a very tasty Cajun-Creole dinner at Hot Belly Mama's just up the street before the concert. With attendance limited to 800, I knew The Venue would be good for a concert. It was, especially for a pair of newer groups (OK, ok...Arkells are on their third album now, but they have not forgotten their "grassroots"). I wished that Dear Rouge was given more than 30 minutes to play, even though their first album doesn't come out until the end of this month. Great performance, and I'd say their sound quality was better than for Arkells. Arkells have a solid stage presence, and sure know how to crank out the music. The encore included two songs with Drew and Danielle McTaggart (Dear Rouge). They could easily have called it the end at that point, but there was one more song to bring the house down.

Back to "grassroots" - When we were buying concert swag, the woman manning the table for Arkells told me that Dear Rouge's "merchandise guy" wasn't there. "You'll know him when you see him. Really tall, good looking guy." She said that he would be back at intermission, so I went down at intermission. He was not there, but I was not disappointed. At the table was the lovely Danielle McTaggart. The guy who was there before was her husband, Drew. Since most of the audience was more interested in Arkells, I had the opportunity to chat with Danielle for a few minutes. How often does one get to do that at a concert? After the concert was over, Drew and Danielle were both behind their swag table. I guess Danielle captured all of my attention, because I forgot to take a photo (of her - I don't need one of or with me, and I don't do "selfies"), dammit. That's okay. I have the whole evening for memory. My son? Lost in both performances all night. He said I've spoiled him, as I've only taken him to concerts where he's been pretty close to the performers.

Disappointed that the CBC review of Amanda Lang's conflict of interest was such a joke. Wow. Pretty low standards at our public broadcaster. Leave it to the CBC to find themselves to blame.

March 6, 2015 @ 12:58 PM

McNulty hit it on the head. Obama was too collaborative from the get go. Thinking that the republicans and especially the tea party would work with him. Problem there was they wouldn't work with him period it didn't matter what they said, they judged their success by knocking down every single one of his mandates as quickly as they could. People only need to look at what happened when they tried to enact healthy eating at schools to see how republicans couldn't even handle that. (which they should have been the most concerned, because a lot of those southern states that are Republican also tend to be the ones with the most obese people), but I digress

He played too nice for too long. Now he's like that guy who was bullied for years and then snaps and moving forward the minute someone even says the word but he slams down an executive order.

@argie: I agree regarding gitmo and the NSA spying. The drone piece however was inevitable. I don't think it would have mattered who was in that chair the use of drones was only going to increase exponentially. They are too easy to use and cost very little in terms of the life of US military, collateral damage is another thing altogether.

@anon: I disagree regarding politicians and their power on the economy. One only needs look at Kansas where politicians in the back pockets of the Koch brothers have literally run that state into the ground. All during the same time the economy was growing everywhere else in the US. Or look to California and what they did with a democratic governor for their economy vs. when the Terminator was in office and they went nearly broke. O took an economy that was losing 100's of 1000's of jobs a month and turned that into some positive numbers.

I think it's hard to say he wasn't great when he didn't have full control of all three levels of the house. If you look at Canada you can judge Harper on having a majority and he can't blame anyone but himself for whatever mess or success' he's had.

That's not to say I think O is the best or worst. I just think he had grandiose ideas and they may have been more successful had he exerted his power in the very beginning vs. waiting till year 6. That may have given the message to the tea party extremist's he meant business and their version of crazy and bullying wasn't going to be accepted.

Cheryl, will you go out with me ?

March 6, 2015 @ 1:25 PM

@Ben & Javed
So you're saying Obama's failures are all due to the GOP a-holes? Really?

My problem with him is really not what he did or didn't do. I hated the way he reacted to hot-button topics such as the Travon Martin killing and the Ferguson police killing while barely reacting to ISIS, Benghazi and the NSA issues.

He seemed to only care about something if Jon Stewart or John Oliver cared about it. That's not leadership - that's just trying to keep your base happy.

March 6, 2015 @ 1:36 PM

@Mike - No more than 3g brown sugar, right?
I haven't had oatmeal for a couple of years now. I usually toss in unsweetened apple sauce and sprinkle some cinnamon on top.

March 6, 2015 @ 1:36 PM

Ben V

No Argie I'm not saying that. I'm saying you can't know one way or the other, because he didn't have or exert full control. He needed a page from the Harper book of not playing nice with others. Ever.

With regards to his base, that's all he had. The people that weren't in his base following were never going to be. These are the folks that think he's muslim with a muslim agenda, born in Kenya and have a problem with him being black. They were never ever going to change their minds about Obama.

It's manufacturing and I dont get any severance until after 13 weeks whether they decide (they won't) to bring me back. Been there 7 years. Yes I've applied to ei but that equals less than half the pay I was making.

The U.S. Economy was going to rebound no matter who was in office. You can't keep a giant down for long.
What has gone wrong is Obama's incredible indifference to what is happening on the world stage.
He announced Al Queda as being decimated when Bin Laden was killed. They are arguably stronger today than ever.
His weak response to ISIS. They have been so quiet lately I hate to think of what is coming.
Have Israel/U.S. Relations ever been so bad? What kind of deal is he willing to give Iran over Nuclear capability? Who knows! But if I was Israel I'd be damn worried.

March 6, 2015 @ 6:22 PM

Kean won earlier today, but they won't make it. I am not winning the pool because Menard lost their last game as well. It sucks. I really want the money, but one of the guys has Jacobs and Gushue and he will probably get it. My Orioles lost today. The Jays beat them this time. Spring training games are free, but sure don't give you a choice of broadcasters. I got the Jays horrible announcers, Mike Wilner and I can't remember the other guy's name, but who cares. They're horrible and they're boring. Guys like them make baseball boring. The Orioles announcers are the best. They're fun to listen to.

March 6, 2015 @ 6:24 PM

@ Cheryl

What are the names of the Orioles announcers names?
Too bad your Curling pool didn't do you justice.
Habs have NOT been good the last few games as I think Price & other players are getting tired. It's a long season.

I have this recurring nightmare that Carey Price stands on his head and leads the Habs to the Stanley Cup finals. The East is open and he's the best goaltender in the conference. It could happen. Perish the thought.

March 6, 2015 @ 7:38 PM

Price is probably MVP this year & the best goalie in NHL now.

Heaven forbid if Habs get to the Stanley Cup Finals.

I just imagine Chery's comments. Now that will be a NIGHTMARE.

Blundell & Co.
Listened all week between 6:30 and 7:45
I can't tell Rusic and Blundell's voices apart, except that Rusic knows something about sports. Kayla is only on for updates, thought she would be in discussions, disappointed there.
If you didn't hear the Al Michaels interview on Thurs, go listen from about 19 mins in (it's on sportsnet site). Dean takes a bit of a jab at the Dennis Miller era on MNF, and then ... Wow! Portents of the future, an omen? I think Dean would like to have that bit back. Uncomfortable.

I don't know who the audience is supposed to be. I'm not a high level sports nerd, but I like to listen to sports people who know more than I do. Obviously Dean doesn't have it so when he says something remotely sports intelligent, I have to wonder if he lucked out, or if someone is feeding him lines and facts. To his credit he has prefaced some things by saying "I read" or "I was reading", but most things devolve into snide remarks and sniping. He has certainly been neutered.

March 6, 2015 @ 7:52 PM

You're damn right, Price is the best. No doubt about it and the Habs will go to the final and win the cup. I just know it will happen. Too bad there is no hockey pool, but nobody wants one. The Orioles announcers are Joe Angel and Fred Manfra. They're the best there is. They make baseball more fun to listen to. They're great. The Jays guys are so boring. It's not good I didn't win my curling pool. I won't get any money. Oh, I should win the baseball pool. Well, the Nationals won and that is good, but my Diamondbacks lost. Good thing I picked the Royals in the Al Central because they seem to be on a roll. I want to be ?$100.00 richer by the fall.

Salvation Army doing an interesting thing with 'the dress' about violence against women. Annie Lennox wrote a good article. We all need to get on board against the terrorism is private homes against women.

March 6, 2015 @ 9:13 PM

Speaking of brutal bullies:
The judge in Ferguson, Missouri, who is accused of fixing traffic tickets for himself and colleagues while inflicting a punishing regime of fines and fees on the city’s residents, also owes more than $170,000 in unpaid taxes.

Ronald J Brockmeyer, whose court allegedly jailed impoverished defendants unable to pay fines of a few hundred dollars, has a string of outstanding debts to the US government dating back to 2007, according to tax filings obtained by the Guardian from authorities in Missouri.

March 6, 2015 @ 9:16 PM

My Suns beat my Nets in overtime. The Nets could have won that game. It's okay though. They're both my favourite teams. Tonight my Habs are at my Coyotes. Coyotes may win this. They're both my teams again though, but my Coyotes are at the bottom. Anyway, Orioles play Boston today. I think I just may be able to get the Orioles announcers. That would be good. Hopefully a win. I'll be subscribing to baseball very soon when the subscriptions come out. I hope it's going to be affordable. I'm not listening to those awful Jays announcers again. Boy, they're bad.

Good post re: violence against women. I'm glad the Salvation Army did what they did concerning "the dress". When I saw it on the news yesterday, I almost stood up and cheered.

Also, thanks for the link to Annie Lennox's article. She is one in a million; a great woman who has already contributed so much to the world, particularly AIDS in Africa.

Tomorrow is International Women's Day. Think about the status of women and girls in this world, and think about how we can all do something to make the lives of the women and girls around us a little bit better.

If you have daughters, make sure you foster a strong sense of self-worth in them. Tell them their appearance is just a trivial detail. Tell them it's what's inside of them that really counts. Tell them they can do or be anything they want in their lives. And follow that up with all the support you can muster. Strong women in the first world will go a long way towards supporting women in the third world.

If you are married, take on just one of "her household chores" that you may have automatically delegated to your wife because she is a woman and because "she does it better". Learn how to do it properly. Don't wimp out.

Everybody: If you haven't clicked on the link yet, please do so.

There, I'm done.

March 7, 2015 @ 8:44 AM

Handsome Rob

Find this interesting...

The Toronto Star has abandoned its attempt at a paid digital subscription as of April 1st. I think if I'm not mistaken that it was the second time they've tried a paid approach. I have to say that I'm glad it's being abandoned as it was more of a pain in the but than anything. It seemed like they could track the number of articles read, they gave you 10 free a month, only on laptops/desktop vs. phones/tablets. So if I hit the 10 reads on my laptop is just read 11+ on my iPad.
If it did anything, it pushed me to alternate news sources.

How low can the Leafs go. This is embarrassing. Not playing as a team & the coach standing behind the bench with arms crossed not saying a word.

Th Raptors lately are not much better - lose 7 of 8 games against some weak teams.

Sports teams in Toronto suck. The Jays with older pitchers & NO BULLPEN will be another joke this year.

March 7, 2015 @ 9:47 PM

Well, how about those Habs. Wish it went to overtime though so my Coyotes would get a point, but they didn't. This is it. Cheer for the Habs if you're fed up with the Leafs and cheer for the Orioles if you're fed up with the Jays. My Orioles lost yesterday. That sucked. My Diamondbacks won though. My Suns lost as well. Anyway, let's hope my Orioles, Diamondbacks and Nets win today. That will be good.

March 8, 2015 @ 7:50 AM

Kadri sent home from Sunday practice today - he missed a meeting with the coach.
This is getting low.
Still....I will cheer for the Leafs over the Habs til my bitter end.

March 8, 2015 @ 2:52 PM

Well, my Habs won last night. That's great and the Leafs lost. I did post earlier, but for some reason it didn't post. I don't know why. Anyway, my nets are leading at the half by a bit. They better win this. My Orioles lost today. That sucks. Well, for some reason my subscription ran out for baseball before spring training ended. I had to renew it. Costs over $19.00. That's okay. I think it costs just as much to get it in the middle of the season as it does to get it at the beginning. I have it set so my baseball will automatically renew every year. My Orioles lost though again. They better turn it around when the games actually count. My Diamondbacks won though.

@torontomike, ask him why he fired Freddiep as his best man. Only posting for shits and giggles, wouldn't expect you to ask such an uncomfortable, personal question. Love his trivia knowledge, remember years ago when he was on 1010, running a segment where no one could stump him.

@Rick C in Oakville

I'm definitely asking that question. I want to know why he fired Freddie P as his best man.

March 8, 2015 @ 10:07 PM

I don't remember how or why I saw it but there's a wonderful picture of Mike Stafford and his wife Jodi on their honeymoon in Hawaii. She's super duper cute and clearly younger. I also remember Mike posting on his blog - that he had at the time via 640 - that he had proposed and that when you know, you know. Then, The Fred Man posted on Canadian Thinker about being Mike's best man - and then went down memory lane a little bit. There was a mention of Mike banging some broad on a desk and some other shenanigans - all with the point being this great good guy had finally found his 'forever girl'.

Also, there would be times over the years that he and Freddie P would go for beers and spend hours together talking through an afternoon - you could hear the affection in Mike's voice as he shared those stories in detail on air. I know you've got 'the firing' on your list but the framing of that query is important (as of course you know and will handle beautifully - of that, I have no doubt). This article captures the essence of Mike Stafford. I'd like to know more about Patrick Malkin - whom I call the radio 'rain man'. Razor sharp wit. He and Mike are great foils. After all these many years as a listener, I've yet to disagree with one thing Patrick says.

It's not possible for me to adore Mike Stafford more. I would love to meet him at some point - with his wife Jodi. That'd be some fun over an adult beverage or two.

Then we have Ryan Bonner. I didn't care for Ryan and his shit for a long time and then, somehow, he won me over. Kind of crazy that he and his wife have just had their first child - and that he took two weeks off to be around for the new normal. Ryan has grown as a broadcaster - when he subs for McArthur he does a decidedly outstanding job.

I'm looking forward to hearing the podcast. I was thinking about this early this evening driving back downtown from Peterborough - where I had the great pleasure of spending time with the marvellous Dani Stover - after she finished guesting on a podcast. I'm happy she invited me. More on that to come.

Stafford is awesome. Funny as hell and opinioned (and not in a politically correct, Jon Stewart way). He's also one of the few hosts that will actually remind listeners who he's speaking with. Even the "legendary" Bob McCown will go an entire 20 minute interview without telling us who's he's speaking with. Its unforgivable.

Anyway, can you ask him why almost every show producer in this city is named "Ryan"?

The Leafs should have done this months ago, but it is time to start sitting players that don't put any effort forth, no matter who they are. Start with Kadri (unless he had a real and serious reason for being late.)

The irony is that Kadri is one of the few Leafs remaining that actually give a crap. The others all checked - months ago.

My Nets did lose. That's no good at all, but they did. Thank goodness, the Raptors also lost. Jacobs also lost the Brier. The guy who had Team Canada won the money even though the guy who had Jacobs and Gushue said he was going to win it. I sure wish I would have won it. Oh well, there is always next year when Kean will go back to the Brier and win it. Anyway, my Orioles better start winning soon. It's nice to know I will be automatically renewed for baseball. I won't have to keep resubscribing. Joe Angel and Fred Manfra, the radio guys for the Orioles are the best announcers for baseball. I really like how they call the games, a lot better than the Bluejays guys doing it.

No Tuesday Open Mike. That's okay. I mean it's up to you if you want to do one. Anyway, I just found out something today. My trainer likes Dean Blundell and I mean likes him a lot. I didn't know this, but my trainer was talking about how great he actually is and that he was on some other stations as well. Well, maybe, just maybe I should give Dean Blundell a listen. I had no idea my trainer liked him, but he says that he listens on his morning drive. Well, I like to start my work early in the morning. I'll be sure to catch some Dean Blundell tomorrow. I'll make time for Dean Blundell. Maybe just once unless I really like him as well. Anyway, my Suns and Coyotes both lost last night. My Orioles won this afternoon. That's great my Orioles won. Anyway, let's hope my Habs win tonight. The Leafs lost last night, that's good.

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

But there is a Tuesday Open Mike. It's here:

You should listen to Dean Blundell's show and let us know what you think of it.

Well, I did find Tuesday open Mike. It was hiding. Well, my trainer and I disagree on something. I don't like Dean Blundell. I agree with you he is not very good. I posted on the Tuesday open Mike about that.
