Mercy, Mercy Me

The Supreme Court of Canada says a law that makes it illegal for anyone to help people end their own lives should be amended to allow doctors to help in specific situations.

The ruling only applies to competent adults with enduring, intolerable suffering who clearly consent to ending their lives.

The court has given federal and provincial governments 12 months to craft legislation to respond to the ruling; the ban on doctor-assisted suicide stands until then. If the government doesn't write a new law, the court's exemption for physicians will stand.

The right to die with dignity... what a progressive and sensible decision.

Just remember that nothing changed after the marijuana ruling. The entire country wants to move forward, yet the top decides to put the brakes and not move forward. Nine years of that *rap.

But look what happened for same-sex marriage?

Let's hope for similar positive results. It's certainly a step in the right direction, but we're not there yet.

I recall that started before the current party, formerly with the progressive prefix, was in power. What happens next depends on who gets the next mandate. The same-sex marriage was one of the election issues in the past, at least it was higher on the list than assisted suicide. Although very important, I don't this will be much debated in the coming campaign. Unless the cons come up with some creative ads like "JT wants the seniors dead!"

It's a stupid rule. Thing is there are people who can't do anything anymore and they're sick, they want to die so why can't the doctors help them do that.

Whoa! An opinion from @Cheryl that didn't involve her Suns, Coyotes, Nets or curling...and I agree with it!

Bravo!

Good, glad you agree. People should have the right to die like animals can be put down if their quality of life isn't good anymore.
