I see SOWNY is back up on-line.Sadly the cause of all the bull has not been banned. The death watch for the one time interesting board has begun.

January 27, 2015 @ 8:50 AM

I have a beef. I think this is the ideal place to share it.

I like Humble and Fred, but I heard something yesterday that upsets me. I heard them "program directed" and told to stop talking about Blundell. Something about listeners from Alaska to Mexico who don't care about Toronto stuff.

If they're now taking direction from someone at Sirius regarding content and purposely avoiding Toronto topics, they're hypocrites. I'll bet 99.9% of their listeners are from Toronto or around Toronto. I'll bet me can count their Alaska and Mexico listeners on one hand.

Wonderful. Our late, great friend, a championing of beheading 'sorcerers' and whipping liberal bloggers, has kept some of his daughters and wives locked up for years.

There are two quasi-medieval Islamic states in the Middle East making the headlines at the moment. Both have fairly similar initial histories and even closer ideological leanings. One however is a new-born (and possibly still-born) thing battling against an array of enemies while imposing its bloody rule on diverse and often impoverished communities across large swathes of the region. The other has existed in its presence form for over eighty years, secure in the affections of most “Western” nations thanks to its willingness to provide access – at a price – to vast quantities of petroleum reserves under its control.

it's a bit of a catch-22. They could stay podcast-only and control 100% of their content, but advertising would suffer.

Going on Sirius allows them to charge more for advertising so they can afford to keep going, but now you have to work with others and take some direction from the station. You give up some autonomy for more money, a trade many have made at one time or another.

January 27, 2015 @ 9:02 AM

I finally agree wit you (ya, a first!!) but unfortunately there are more than TWO "quasi-medieval Islamic states in the Middle East ". Try ALL of them!

January 27, 2015 @ 9:05 AM

Ben V

Argie: I wouldn't quantify Azerbaijan as quasi-medieval. Yeah the government is corrupt(there isn't really one in the world that isn't), but the people there drink, and from an attire standpoint look like anyone in the west. Only weird thing is that they believe women shouldn't do any lifting otherwise it will make them sterile.

Turkey has more problems today than it should and both the president and prime minister should be removed. However it isn't backwards like a number of other places in the region.

January 27, 2015 @ 9:21 AM

Isn't Turkey in Europe? Geographically, I wouldn't say they're Middle east. Azerbaijan would be Asia, no?

Speaking of Turkey, I heard they have more journalists imprisoned than China.

January 27, 2015 @ 9:38 AM

Why don't you like Maria Sharapova? Beautiful, talented, doesn't get in trouble off the court. What is there to hate?

January 27, 2015 @ 9:40 AM

@Toronto Mike

I get that, but don't brag about being your own boss and not having to answer to a program director if you do!

The advice "stop talking about Dean Blundell" is terrible. If anything, they should talk more about him!

The idea here being that the King of Saudi Arabia, who we are now creating 15 billion dollars worth of armoured vehicles for, his wealth is keeping Canadian families afloat who are now morally complicit in torture and repression. What a position for Harper to put these people in. Can't we create wealth some other way.

I tweeted that I dislike her. That's a far shot from hate.

Sometimes I just dislike a public figure and can't pinpoint why. Maybe it's just the excessive grunting. It's worth noting that I sent that tweet right after she went to the umpire and complained there was no review and he pointed out rightly that she didn't ask for one.

Then she exclaimed "it was out by this much (raising her hand to show about a foot), of course I want a review!" The review showed it was in. In that moment, I really disliked her.

January 27, 2015 @ 9:43 AM

If you're LA, do you trade Richards for Clarkson? If I'm Toronto, I would do it.

January 27, 2015 @ 9:46 AM

Tiny Montgomery

Iraq under the dictator Saddam Hussein had female university professors, doctors, lawyers. Iraq had booksellers, was a traditional seat of Arab culture. It was a dictatorship ruled by a (U.S. controlled) puppet monster but the point is there were rights for women in higher education and the professions. Now of course the Christian Crusader George Bush smashes a functioning society (with help from Clinton and his father) and creates conditions for fanaticism to raise its head.

January 27, 2015 @ 9:47 AM

Don't hate me because I am beautiful Mike

p.s. Love the blog

January 27, 2015 @ 9:48 AM

January 27, 2015 @ 9:52 AM

I dislike her as well..she has an arrogance about her that drives me bonkers.

I haven't seen much Richards this season, but by all accounts he's fallen off a cliff... a shadow of his former self who can't crack LA's lineup.

Believe it or not, Clarkson might be the better player today, and definitely will be in a couple of years. The Leafs should avoid Richards, even if adding him gets rid of Clarkson's contract.

Two wrongs don't make a right here.

January 27, 2015 @ 9:54 AM

you should try through your contacts to get Raine Maida or/chantal kreviazuk think it would make a good interview..

I wonder if they'd come by tonight?

Raina was scheduled to be this week's episode, but she just bailed. The toughest part about the podcast is coordinating recording times and tracking down guests. Does anyone want this unpaid gig?

Good to see Rogers had a all points covered plan before they made changes at FAN590.

January 27, 2015 @ 10:01 AM

I wouldn't take Richards for Clarkson..he hasn't put in a ton of goals but he one of the few who seems to at the very least be engaged in the pre suite of a win.

January 27, 2015 @ 10:01 AM

Mike & mrmojo...
The upside on Richards is way more than the upside on Clarkson. I get that Richards is known as a dick but I'm sure in a new environment, he could excel again.

January 27, 2015 @ 10:11 AM

Yes, its all George Bush's fault ALL of the Islamic countries in the M/E are screwed up. You might as well blame Mike Richards and David Clarkson as well.....

January 27, 2015 @ 10:13 AM

@ Mike
well maybe for the next one then :)

January 27, 2015 @ 10:19 AM

@Argie, I believe LA thought the same thing when they took him from Philly..
that two teams who didn't want him..Clarkson had a bad first year, and he playing better this year but what can you except from him when the entire team is in a downward spiral? it a team sport.

A deafening silence from the "Save our CBC" gang in light of the Ghomeshi allegations and the apparent "Conflict of Interest" allegations involving Amanda Lang. Mansbridge and Murphy must be a wee bit concerned seeing as they too supplement their income with similar speaking engagements.

Me thinks our public broadcaster is in dire need of an enema.

January 27, 2015 @ 10:29 AM

Last comment on this subject, because nobody else seems to give a shit. :)

I listened to Humble and Fred because they were Toronto guys talking about my city. Hearing that they're artificially suppressing Toronto content has me so disappointed and dismayed that I'm out.

Yes Argie George Bush should be charged with war crimes.

January 27, 2015 @ 10:35 AM

I was reading an article in the National Post over the weekend on the success HMV Canada is having lately. This wasn't the basis of the article but what caught my eye was the number of albums sold in Canada last year and specially vinyl albums.
For all the media attention vinyl has received over the last few years the total number of vinyl albums sold in Canada in 2014 was 200,000. That's it. In that same time 17.6 million CDs and 11.4 million digital albums were sold in Canada. In other words vinyl has a total market share of less than 1%. Even if they doubled their total numbers in 2015 they would still have less than 1%.

Fads don't necessarily mean trends.

In a few years those bearded hipsters will be selling their Mumford and Sons vinyl on eBay for pennies.

Here's the article:

Bush was responsible for the Invasion of Iraq in 2003. By all accounts that went well (quick & clean). Its what happened after that invasion - and that is blamed on the various insurgent groups.

We can all debate whether the reasons for the invasion was valid but no, he shouldn't be charged for "war crimes."

January 27, 2015 @ 10:48 AM

Tiny Montgomery

Quick and clean with dead children and civilians and the resistance that followed which cannot be separated from a fake 'Mission Accomplished' and torture camps. Let's give Bush and Cheney white doves and rainbow - coloured lollipops.

January 27, 2015 @ 11:18 AM

Last year I wrote about the work of Joanna Macy, a scholar of Buddhism, eco-philosophy, general systems theory and deep ecology, and author of more than a dozen books. Her initiative, The Work That Reconnects, helps people essentially do nothing more mysterious than telling the truth about what we see, know and feel is happening to our world.

@Argie: What koolaid have you been drinking? Since when was Iraq a quick and clean operation?

As for the quagmire that has happened since, the devil you know is better than the devil you don't. The invasion enabled this current situation and climate.

Nothing clean about that.

Quick and clean gives the impression that there were no lasting affects by an action. I don't consider my haircut quick and clean if I get it and then realize later on that the barber cut my hair in a way that enabled a mullet to start growing.

Can I make a (maybe) "uncool" suggestion. I've really liked Roger Ashby (CHUM family) for years. Yes, old, dusty and non-confrontational, but he is a legend in Toronto broadcasting. He might be a tad vanilla, but he has pulled in a steady listener ship for years, started in the old CHUM AM days. He has been broadcasting for decades and is in the Hall of Fame and has seen it all in Toronto radio. Sometimes his brand of radio DJ'ing is what you need -- not too demanding, a nice voice, professional. He does have strong opinions (even if he seldom utters them) and it would be interesting to hear about the early days as well as where he sees radio going.

January 27, 2015 @ 12:08 PM

Ben & Tiny
As far as I know its wasn't US military personnel blowing themselves up in crowded markets or setting up IEDs along the road. Are we blaming Bush for acts of terrorism?

January 27, 2015 @ 12:15 PM

519 Rob

@ Glen
I read that same article with interest.
I am a vinyl buyer. No, not a hipster (I don't own any Mumford on vinyl).
I enjoy the sound and the experience. I find with vinyl I actually LISTEN to the album. It isn't back ground noise. I read the liner notes and the lyrics.
My main sources of music are streaming (usually at work) SiriusXM (in my car) my iPod/iPhone (Gym) and vinyl (at home). I honestly can not recall the last time I bought a CD.
Obviously based on that article I am the exception, and not the rule.

The best part about (most) vinyl purchases is that they come with a digital download. So I get the best of both worlds.

How has the music changed at Indie from what they thought it was going to be prior to or during the opening soft launch?

Just when you think you've seen pretty much everything driving on the highways around Toronto...
Westbound in the express lanes this morning, just past Markham, there's a silver Nissan Maxima pulled off on the left shoulder. You can see his tire tracks. He was on the left shoulder a couple hundred yards earlier, went to get back on the highway and is now back on the shoulder. Traffic is crawling (has been for miles and still miles more to go). As I swerve to miss some plastic and metal car parts in the traffic lane, I see the driver of the car has gotten out and is running down the shoulder, trying not to fall as he runs. He's picking up money! There are a half dozen or so banknotes of whatever denomination. This guy is lucky that traffic is crawling. First for the sake of his safety/life, second that it's not windy. As I eventually pass his car, I look back. He had no front grille on his car. Now I know what the car parts are/were. No sign of what he ran into, though. I wonder what the story was.

Maria Sharapova - Her grunting on court is incredibly irritating. Grating, even. As I understand, the grunting is a twist on tactics: to go along with great physical exertion, and supposedly to intimidate (to whatever degree) the opponent. Two grunters on court? I'll skip that match unless I can mute the soundtrack. I do agree that Sharapova is beautiful, though. Tennis tends to have more than its fair share of female beauty, IMHO. Perhaps that is making up for international sports (not too) long ago when you had athletes like the East German women's swim team.

January 27, 2015 @ 12:33 PM

War is war is war is war. There is nothing 'neat and clean' about bombing cities. Smart bombs take out neighbourhoods because they aren't so smart. Torture photos show what was happening in Iraq. Patriots fight invaders even after the war is 'lost.' Hell is unleashed when you play with the devil. Yes Bush and Cheney were devils in bed with devils. Yin Yang. You can't have war without war.

January 27, 2015 @ 12:34 PM

Ben V

@Argie: Weren't soldiers humiliating and torturing prisoners?

I guess when they dropped bombs and those bombs blew up the markets it isn't the same thing?

I got a chuckle out of your quick deflection on the argument of Iraq being a quick and clean mission. Nothing more to add to that? How about all the military top brass that continue to say they should have never gone in and it was a massive disaster? Or are you just relying on Georgie boy standing on an aircraft carrier saying "mission accomplished" for your historical information?

I stated the invasion was quick. Yeah there were plenty of crap that ensued but to blame Bush & Cheney for all of the terrorist attacks is crazy. That's my point - no "deflection" (wow, another over-used cliché).

The genesis of this pointless debate is Tiny's assertion that somehow the crap-pot regimes in the middle east (essentially all of them , with the exception of big, bad Israel) can be blamed on this invasion. That's also crazy.

I had a response to the Iraq war stuff on the tip of my typing fingers but..nah.

My wife and I bought new skates for the three of us at Christmas time , I haven't skated for 20 or so years so i'm a 'bit" wobbly to say the least LOL. However we are having an awesome time and have skated every weekend this month ,even on our kidless "off" weeks . Speaking of whom Morgan is progressing so fast it's freaky. she did a couple of circuits holding the wall at Albion area our first time out and since she just gets better and better. We went to the outdoor skating trail at Samuel Smith park last week and i could barely keep up.

So this past weekend the Village (parents and stepparents we all get along great) took Morgan for a weekend at horseshoe as her stepmom had a deal and a friend who could give lessons. once again i was doing something i hadn't for more than 20 years (and was gratified to not totally suck) (mostly) The third run down the hill Morgan was off and running.

It's so amazing to watch her growing and learning like that. I am one lucky Guy.

On a down note our male cat Henry was limping when we got home and very obviously in a great deal of pain. Atrip to the vet yesterday and a diagnosis of a torn ACL has not made us or him all that happy . :( The vet said surgery but he's 15 and i'm not certain sedation is a great idea. a friends cat had a torn ACL and all she did was 3 months rest.Tricky decision.

It's funny you mention skiing. My son is skiing this week for the first time. His grade 7 class went to Quebec for a ski trip.

That got me wondering when I skied last. It was grade 12 lifetime gym. That was a very long time ago.

January 27, 2015 @ 2:32 PM

Ben V

@Argie: Sorry you stated quick and clean. I can reype your post, or you can scroll up. I took issue with the quick and CLEAN part. Emphasis on the clean part you mentioned(by all accounts?? whose accounts?) That is where you are deflecting.

The fact that it was so terribly the oppostie of clean is precisely what created a vaccum, which in turn created conditions rype for the growth of terrorism. Are they responsible for all terrorism? No. What is happening in Iraq is a direct result however of the US intervention there. Many of the people that were jailed by the US in Iraq all met and conferred and created a common bond in their hatred of the US during the invasion.

For the record Cheney and Bush are responsible for a fair portion, but not all

January 27, 2015 @ 2:45 PM

Tiny Montgomery

There was no Al-Queda in Iraq. Or terrorists blowing up markets (yes Argie I'm really sure you care about the 'ragheads' being blown up as they shop) in Iraq. This shit would have been stomped on hard by the dictator Saddam. All this hell on earth for the average person was unleashed by the western powers who know well the old
Colonial rule 'Divide and Conquer.'

OK, my final post on this. Yes I used the word "clean". Again, for the third or forth time, the INVAISION was quick and clean. Go ahead and argue all you want.

January 27, 2015 @ 3:54 PM

Well, my Nets were supposed to play last night, but they didn't because of the snow. That means they didn't lose. Tonight my Coyotes and my Habs both play. That's wonderful. Hockey started up again. Anyway, I'm in the Provincials curling pool. Yes, there is a pool for men's provincials. Everyone has a team and the winner gets $20.00. I have Kean. I was going to take Balsdon because my trainer's friends play on it, but one guy picked them first and I picked Kean so if they win, I get $20.00. Currie qualified for Northern Ontario provincials. Currie hopefully goes to the Brier again and wins the Brier.

January 27, 2015 @ 4:42 PM

I'm with you.

Their take on the Dean Blundell interests me and probably a huge segment of their listeners who live in the Toronto area. They have 20+ years in the radio business. What else are they going to talk about except what they know?

@ Stan - relax. That was a staged meeting on the podcast portion of our show. (Why do you think it was "on" the show. ) It was Ben Miners opinion, not a directive, and as PD of Canada Laughs he's entitled to his opinion. We are free, and will continue to talk about anything we want with no censorship. If a Toronto story is interesting and relatable, we talk about it. Without hesitation.

We don't work for SiriusXM, they purchase our show.

We agreed with Ben because we had already determined it was time to move on. But further to that, in our opinion it wasn't just a Toronto story, it became a national story.

As for our audience reach, it's amazing. We gave a gift certificate away last week and got calls for Utah, Illinois, South Carolina, Hamilton and Toronto. We constantly get calls and e-mails from all over North America. It's more than a handful and why we've just signed a new two year deal.

It seems Americans enjoy the Canadian sense of humour.

My Habs won, but my Coyotes blew it losing in a shootout but they had a 2 to 0 lead at the beginning. At least my Habs won so that's a good thing. Anyway, who is Smith? There is no Smith curling team in men's provincials. Anyway, Kean is going to win so I get my money. They have to make it all the way to the Brier to get my money. Hopefully Seattle wins the Superbowl so I get $150.00 instead of $100.00. Otherwise I really don't care about the Superbowl. I hate the Patriots though cheating so they could beat my Ravens. Not good.
