Happy Birthday James!

On a movie note, watched Birdman and enjoyed it, but also watched Whiplash...WOW! That movie was just ok right up until the end...and then that final scene happened. Teller and Simmons (especially Simmons) were great!

There were two 11 year old native girls in Canada who's parent had refused chemotherapy to treat their cancers. Both parents wanted their daughters to use native medicine and alternative treatments instead of modern medicine.

One of those girls has sadly died.

There's not much else to say. Is there?

Here's the story.

That girl's death is the cause of cowardly political correctness on the part of the Judge who ruled in favour of the idiotic parents. Hopefully one day there will be a judge and/or a politician who will protect these kids from their incompetent parents.

Apparently the survival rate for the cancer the girl had is 80-90% - if treated with modern medicine.

That story infuriates me.

With chemo, she likely would have lived. Without chemo, she would die. Years and years of studies, science, trial and error to save her life and they flushed it down the drain.

That girl should be alive today. It's so sad.

January 20, 2015 @ 9:19 AM

McNulty

The crazy parents believed that Jesus had cured her and convinced the girl of the same thing.

But should have been forcibly removed and had the drugs forced into her? That part I don't know. Her death was needless and sadly she will never know better.

Steve Simmons just tweeted that Dean Blundell is rumoured to be taking over the morning spot on the FAN 590. Thoughts?

I actually mentioned the Dean Blundell Fan 590 rumour to Elliotte Friedman in this latest episode of my podcast: http://www.torontomike.com/2015/01/toronto_miked_podcast_episode_107.html

These rumours have been around for a while.

According to TSM, here's the new Fan 590 lineup:

Dean Blundell in the morning
Jeff Blair
Hockey Central
Brady and Walker
Bob McCown

Tim and Sid would be TV-only.

January 20, 2015 @ 11:05 AM

Jenkins

I'm assuming, then, that Blundell being added to the lineup is an attempt to boost ratings. Does the guy even know anything about sports?

January 20, 2015 @ 11:10 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Jenkins

Full disclosure: I haven't listened to morning radio since 2011. I'm also not a Blundell fan.

But the rumours about Dean Blundell coming to The Fan have been around for a while, because he's got connections at Rogers. In fact, when I had Greg Brady on my podcast, we talked about it.

I don't know if Blundell knows sports, or if this will work, but he was very popular amongst young people. 20-something year old males love Blundell.

This is a very interesting shake-up...

January 20, 2015 @ 11:17 AM

Philly-Bob

I'll miss Tim & Sid in the afternoon

January 20, 2015 @ 11:18 AM

Jenkins

@Toronto Mike

I really need to start listening to your podcast, it seems. I'm behind on my Toronto radio insider info!

Do you see Blundell continuing his schtick that he carried on at the Edge, or will the Fan force him to tone it down considerably?

January 20, 2015 @ 11:20 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Jenkins

I have no idea, but I chatted up guys who heard Blundell's tryout on The Fan and they were very unimpressed.

I'm sure Dean will add a co-host. Gerry Dee, maybe? Someone like that...

And I'm certain Rogers has had a stern chat with him about not crossing the line with regards to misogyny, homophobia, etc.

January 20, 2015 @ 11:24 AM

Glen

I would love to see Bob McCowan do other kinds of talk radio in Toronto not just sports.

He often sounds bored on Prime Time because I think he's exhausted all his opinions on sports. The problem with sports talk is it's so repetitive. How many times can you say the Leafs were bad the previous night?

It might be interesting to listen to a show where he gives his views on other issues.

I realize he's not going anywhere on the Fan. He's there until he retires.

I wonder if Rogers would allow him to do a podcast with his production company?

January 20, 2015 @ 11:30 AM

Al The Royal Pain

I hate this move. I don't give a shi*t about Blundell, I barely listened to the fan in the morning, now I'll definitely not listen.

The bigger mistake will be getting rid of Tim & Sid from the radio. To me, it's the best show on the radio anywhere in Toronto. Hopefully they'll still have their podcast.

So to me the Fan is now the Bob McCown station and the odd raptors/leafs game.

I understand the need to improve ratings in the morning, but why would you ruin your afternoons to do it?

January 20, 2015 @ 11:47 AM

Glen

@ Al the Royal Pain

Tim and Sid refused to do the typical bland sports talk show. They were fun and entertaining and made you laugh.

Now that's gone from the radio.

We need more of them.

@Argie,

I will happily go see American Sniper with you.

@Toronto Mike,

With chemo, she likely would have lived.

This strikes me as disingenuous. As far as I understand she'd have been substantially more likely to live (versus a chance of almost zero), but it's hard/impossible to say she, "likely would have lived" as in more than 50% chances. We also don't know the specific epidemiology, etc.

January 20, 2015 @ 11:21 PM

Cheryl

How about those Habs. They won in overtime with a goal by PK Subban, a great player and Carey Price was awesome. My Coyotes didn't do so well though. They keep losing. Anyway, hopefully my Nets win tonight. It's about time. I can't wait for my football money. I have to wait until after the Superbowl is over so I won't get it until a week from Monday. I wish my Ravens and Cardinals were in it, but maybe next year. I'm going to get baseball again this season. I have to pay for it myself though. My trainer only got it for me once. He won't get it for me again, but I don't think it should be too much to pay for myself. I want to be able to listen to my Orioles and Diamondbacks.

The parents of that 11 year old native girl had enough faith in modern science to allow them to safely travel in an airplane to the Florida clinic but not in modern medicine to treat her.

By the way have you noticed not a single politician of any party has touched this issue since the girl's death?

But they sure were quick to ban tobogganing in Hamilton because of worry over children's safety though.

BOC lowering it's interest rates for the first time in 4 years!

Looks like the Canadian economy is in real trouble!

How long until negative interest rates like the Swiss?

Hey if oil collapses lets make people get in even more debt by encouraging them to buy that 2nd house they couldn't afford until now......

January 21, 2015 @ 10:34 AM

Philly-Bob

@ this guest, You're a bright guy, you know exactly what my analogy means.

It seems like you and Tiny are almost trying to justify the actions of the terrorists by pointing out the faults of their victims. Neither side is blameless, but your Liberal guilt won't allow you to place a portion of the blame where it belongs.

And as far as the Versailles Treaty goes, I'd say the punishment fit the crime.

January 21, 2015 @ 11:03 AM

Philly-Bob

That's what I love about being a centrist. I am fully aware of the role the US and their allies played in the formation of groups like Al-Queda. But I can also apply simple logic and say that the monsters who crashed planes into the WTC are responsible for their own actions, and the consequence that arise from them.

I don't have to toe the conservative line of "they hate our freedom" nor to I have to buy into the milktoast Liberal crap of "feel bad for them, they wouldn't do this if the west didn't make them" Both sides had a hand in creating the mess we're in, and it will take both sides to get us out....

There are more than a few people on this blog who need to get their heads out of the asses of their respective politcal leans.....

January 21, 2015 @ 11:08 AM

Argie

@Ben
My mortgage is coming due in a few months so I welcome lower rates. Of course we'll see if lowering the bank rate translates into lower mortgage rates.

We must remember, as the price of oil goes, so goes the Canadian economy. If the world ever came up with an alternative to oil, we would all be screwed.

January 21, 2015 @ 11:27 AM

McNulty

@ Philly -

nor to I have to buy into the milktoast Liberal crap of "feel bad for them, they wouldn't do this if the west didn't make them"

Please, Philly. What Liberal is saying this? That's beyond being a blanket statement.

January 21, 2015 @ 12:02 PM

Ben V

@ Argie: Quick talk with a mortgage broker friend he foresees a cut or at least predominant 2.79% to 2.99% mortgages being offered by the big guys. Again that's speculation.

I too have a mortgage to renew soon so I the hope is of course that this translates into savings.

As for the price of oil, I think the drop is a good thing. I think Canada needs to rethink it's stance on Oil being the almighty savior and realize the potential for future situations like this. I also think it's prudent no matter the federal party, that we don't pin budgets and deficits on Oil. This will seem like an attack at the current party, but it isn't, just a need for a more balanced approach .

January 21, 2015 @ 12:15 PM

Philly-Bob

@ McNulty - I would say all the comments that this guest and Tiny have made on this thread fall under that banner.

I never said all Liberals were like that, in fact I'm quite certain I've never accused you of such behaviour as you tend to have a decent amount of common sense.
