I am just curious if anyone will defend Ray Rice on this blog. I heard some defenders on the radio this morning and it was pretty appalling.

September 9, 2014 @ 8:41 AM

There is no defending someone who hits a woman or a child

September 9, 2014 @ 8:46 AM

Who was defending him? Was it callers or the actual program hosts?

I keep hearing and reading about people blaming the Roger Goddell, the Ravens and professional sports in general. That's nonsense - blame Rice. He's the person who beat his fiancée (who still went ahead and married this animal).

September 9, 2014 @ 8:49 AM

Rob Ford is using again.

September 9, 2014 @ 8:52 AM

anyone here know anything about carseats and the regulations between US and Canada?

The criticism of Roger Goodell is that he saw that elevator security camera footage, suspended Ray Rice a paltry two games and used the media to spin a story that what happened inside the elevator mitigated the circumstances.

In other words, Goodell knew how bad it was and tried to cover it up with a light suspension.

If TMZ doesn't release that video yesterday, Ray Rice is back playing in less than two weeks.

September 9, 2014 @ 8:56 AM

NFL is BS..they knew the video was out there..almost positive they saw it before yesterday..and then they decide to suspend him because the video went public..now let be clear that is a separate issue from Ray Rice himself, he deserved what he got (and then some)..he will play again though..maybe not this year..but he will play again. Michael Vic killed dogs and is playing again so Ray Rice will play again and the fact that his wife forgave him will go along way. Society love the game..

September 9, 2014 @ 8:57 AM

@ Argie

It was a few callers who said things like, "You don't know what she did before the video started."

And, "it can't be that bad. She married him."

September 9, 2014 @ 8:59 AM

You can bet Goodell made his 2 game suspension decision after consulting the league's legal dept. I agree, its crazy to only give him 2 games but God knows what the legal guys told him.

September 9, 2014 @ 9:03 AM

I agree with you its appalling - and insane.

There are some awfully ignorant and stupid people out there. Remember the 27% rule...

I've given up on the NFL, but this story intrigued me. It's not just that he coldcocks her, it's how damn unconcerned he looks when he's dragging her limp, unconscious body out of the elevator. He actually looks inconvenienced.

At some point, Goodall (or his successor) will lift the suspension and, if Ray Rice still looks like he can help a team, a team will take a chance on him a'la Michael Vick. This is the NFL, after all...

September 9, 2014 @ 9:04 AM

The NFL is a microcosm of the USA. Knock your girlfriend out cold with a right hook - two game suspension. Get caught smoking a little weed - four game suspension.

I know the standards in Canada are more stringent, so many car seats you buy in the USA are illegal here.

His reaction to her is what makes this all the more abhorrent. There was a complete lack of any emotional response to collapsed on the ground. It's like he swatted a fly and then thought about what to have for dinner.

I was prepared to tell you to stop nit-picking but Fordsy does indeed look like he's using again. It's sad, really. I think of his poor kids.

September 9, 2014 @ 9:40 AM

@mrmojorisinca Like Mike said, the regulations are slightly different between USA and Canada, so just about anything you can buy cheap in Buffalo can't be brought back across the border.

Toronto Mike - Was looking at your bike route and reminded me that I saw a cool heatmap from someone on Runkeeper. Are you using the Toronto Cycles app?

"The data from Toronto Cycles will eventually be folded into a comprehensive cycling report that is due to presented to city council in 2015. The new official cycling plan, still currently a work in progress, is promising to expand on the city's existing 570 kilometres of bike lane."

Of course, it is a Toronto Sun commenter who calls himself "I Own Rob Ford Haters".

No surprise a proud member of Ford Nation would defend abusing women.

I've been measuring my rides with MapMyRide since I used it to measure my runs back in 2007. Of course, back then I called it MapMyRun. It's the same thing.

I was hoping MapMyRide would share their collected data with the Toronto Cycles people, since I literally record every ride I do there. So no, I haven't been using the Toronto Cycles app, mainly because I don't want to run two GPS apps simultaneously.

When it comes to the Waterfront trail and most paths in the west end, I'm a bit of an expert now with many strong opinions, both as an adult and a father of two young riders.

For example, the stretch of Lake Shore between Norris Crescent in Mimico and First Street in New Toronto is a part of the Waterfront Trail and rather dangerous.

There is no bike lane, not even a painted line, and it's two lanes but the right lane is very wide so cars park beside the curb. So I watch my 10-year old daughter bike to the left of the parked cars at a safe distance to avoid being doored, and the cars driving in this same wide right lane zoom past her so fast. Remember, if you want to enjoy the awesome waterfront trail, there is no alternative. You have to ride on the pathless Lake Shore between Norris Crescent and First Street.

This is the same stretch where Sue Trainor was killed last summer. We absolutely have to better protect cyclists on this route. Lake Shore west of 23rd street has a painted bike lane, but for some reason it doesn't exist east of there.

713 arrests of NFL players since 2000. But hey, who's counting, and why bother trying to address an endemic problem?

September 9, 2014 @ 11:07 AM

I have Alberta friends on Facebook who were building snowmen yesterday.

Hard to believe! Toronto's high today: 23 degrees. :)

September 9, 2014 @ 11:08 AM

"No surprise a proud member of Ford Nation would defend abusing women"

An equally crazy point of view.

September 9, 2014 @ 11:11 AM

@ Argie - Considering some of the misogynistic things Ford has said and done, I'd say the comment was apt.

September 9, 2014 @ 11:38 AM

Oh yes, you are correct, Ford is just as bad as Rice. I get it now.

Note: I figure its easier if I just agree with the prevailing opinion (even if its completely wrong).

September 9, 2014 @ 11:56 AM

@ Argie - When did I ever say Ford was as bad as Rice. Please stop playing the Victim Card...

September 9, 2014 @ 12:09 PM

Ben Vidal

@Argie: Taking politics out of it let compare the two men. Ford is known to have a temper and runs around council at times ham fisted thinking he can verbally shout down people and use his size to his advantage. The police were called to his house for a domestic disturbance, which involved his wife and charges of assault and uttering a death threat. Now I know these charges were dropped in part due to his wife's testimony all of a sudden changing.

Look to Ray rice lays out his soon to be wife cold on the ground. Drags her out of the elevator and really doesn't even show an ounce of emotion. Now his wife is coming out saying the media is at fault for all of this and defending Ray Rice? I don't care the situation or words spoken, what he did was disgusting there is no defense period especially from the person he knocked out.

Typical to both situations is that the assault or alleged assault has occurred on several occasions. Battered wives/girlfriends/women often have a problem divesting themselves from an abusive husband/boyfriend. In many instances they will do what both these women have done, defend their husbands, recant stories or simply change stories so charges get thrown out.

I see no difference between the two people in that regard.

Further to this is the fact that in supporting Rob Ford. you support everything that goes with him. I'm sorry, but based on his track record you can't separate the man from the mayor, because all too often he blurs those lines himself. Thus supporting Rob Ford you support his misogynistic behavior and violence against women. Now I know you'll point out he hasn't been caught beating his wife or had any charges laid. That line doesn't hold any water, because based on Rob Ford the man, this is all too likely a story. Coupled with the fact that most abusive situations at home don't get reported, people supporting him clearly see no problem with the things he does or says.

I agree with Philly Bob, the comment was apt.

September 9, 2014 @ 12:12 PM

September 9, 2014 @ 12:24 PM

The more I read nonsense written about Ford (like your recent effort) the more I want this man to win. I'll leave it at that.

But go ahead and accuse me of condoning abuse against women or anything else you wish to heap on me.

September 9, 2014 @ 12:34 PM

Ray Rice plays football which is an incredibly violent game, there certainly is no link to the psychology of our mayor, oh wait, football, hmmm....I read on the Urban Toronto Forum Rob Ford thread it was a former player he coached who administered that
jailhouse beating to Scott Macintyre (sp) the brother in law or ex brother in law.

September 9, 2014 @ 12:39 PM

@Argie: Ah yes the poor me card. We all know you love ford because he stands up to unions. Sweep the rest of it under the rug as long as he goes to bat against the unions.

September 9, 2014 @ 12:47 PM

Wow, Ben is actually serious. I was kind of hoping he was just kidding. Again, wow.

The best thing about Ford is not that he battles the unions, its the fact he drives the neurotic left, well, even more neurotic.

Ben and "anonymous" are evidence for that belief.

September 9, 2014 @ 1:02 PM

@ Argie

Your reasons for liking Ford are pretty vindictive. You want him to win so he causes pain in those that detest him. In spite of all of his issues and the detriment to the city, you just want people like Ben to be upset.

You fault the left for handling defeat poorly but you'd handle a win even worse.

September 9, 2014 @ 1:10 PM

Thanks for your contribution - anyone else?

September 9, 2014 @ 1:14 PM

thanks for the info on child seats..

September 9, 2014 @ 1:17 PM

Unfortunately this isn't a left vs. right situation Argie. It's a Rob Ford vs. everyone else. The same people that voted for Rob Ford also helped to give Kathleen Wynne a Majority this past year. I also don't consider all those who are lumped in as Ford Nation to be hardcore right winged individuals

I gave the parallel between Rice and Rob. Apathy or looking away and claiming you don't support an action, while still supporting the person, does the opposite. You are smart enough Argie to know the difference, I assume this is more about being contrary, because the original comparison made involved ford.

September 9, 2014 @ 1:20 PM

Well done, Argie. As usual you refuse to defend your statements. You make ridiculous claims and don't stand behind them.

September 9, 2014 @ 1:21 PM

September 9, 2014 @ 1:21 PM

For the record I'm not upset. I think Argie gives too much credit to Ford's ability to make everyone "neurotic" or "upset".

September 9, 2014 @ 1:24 PM

What ridiculous claim? Ben, Phil and few others made the link between Ford and Rice. You must realize that is a ridiculous stretch, don't you? It seems when it comes to Ford, many people lose any kind of rational thinking.

Anyway, its no point going on further. Whatever I say will be attacked by you or someone else so enjoy the day.

Last winter, I played on a hockey team full of Ford Nationers.

When pressed, they really can't articulate what they like about Rob Ford, except that "lefties" hate him. They truly enjoyed that fact.

I get the same vibe from Argie and my buddy Il Duce. They just want to see the "elites", "academics" and "downtowners" squirm.

And most of these guys don't even live in Toronto. Argie, for example, doesn't even get a vote in our upcoming election.

September 9, 2014 @ 1:29 PM

@ Argie - I never compared Ford to Rice. I simply agreed with Mike that it wasn't a huge surprise that a "Proud Member of Ford Nation" would defend abusing women (which did happen) given the things their Hero, Rob Ford, has said and done...

September 9, 2014 @ 1:38 PM

Hitler had lots of enemies.

September 9, 2014 @ 1:52 PM

Ben Vidal

Argie, hijacking that quote doesn't help yourself. Every time you've said something incendiary on this blog and people have attacked you back doesn't mean you've stood up for something. It however means you love watching people go neurotic and to take a quote from Batman "Some men love to see the world burn". I don't think a desire for chaos is even on the same level as to what Winston Churchill was getting at.

September 9, 2014 @ 2:02 PM

"The best thing about Ford is not that he battles the unions, its the fact he drives the neurotic left, well, even more neurotic. "

That is the ridiculous claim. My question to you, Argie, is why do you like see them go neurotic? Why does this give you pleasure?

I didn't get pleasure when people like Jerry Agar were upset that Wynne won a majority. I was happy with the win because that's the agenda and platform and leader I liked best. It wasn't about watching others squirm.

September 9, 2014 @ 2:13 PM

@Ben & McNulty (actually, are you the same person?)
Ok, this is my last post today. Yes, I'm the bad person for stating that is was ridiculous to link Ford and Lewis and to accuse anyone who semi-backs Ford as condoning violence against women. That's all I was trying to convey. How dare me.

September 9, 2014 @ 2:21 PM

As usual Argie avoids the questions and misses the point.

Most likely it is on purpose.

"The best thing about Ford is not that he battles the unions, its the fact he drives the neurotic left, well, even more neurotic. "

That is the ridiculous claim. My question to you, Argie, is why do you like see them go neurotic? Why does this give you pleasure?

September 9, 2014 @ 2:34 PM

I like the NFL. Ray Rice is one guy. Who knows why he did what he did. Anyway, my Ravens cut him. He's suspended from the NFL. Anyway, I am still cheering for Cardinals and Ravens. I need both teams to win so I get my money. Football is good. Well, I've gotten to like baseball as well though. Anyway, Orioles at Redsox again tonight. Chris Tillman is on the mound. Another win. Oh, my trainer's wife lost again in soccer. I don't know why they suck, but they suck bad. Bob Seger's new album is available for preorder. You bet I'm getting it. It will be here for my World Series party. Then there is my Superbowl party as well. The Superbowl will be awesome with my Cardinals and Ravens both in it. Then of course my Stanley Cup party. Habs and Coyotes all the way.

September 9, 2014 @ 4:58 PM

I recently started watching the TV show "Justified" staring Timothy Olyphant. I was curious about this show because Olyphant was in one of my favorite shows "Deadwood". "Justified" is based on an Elmore Leonard short story and developed by Graham Yost (son of Elwy Yost who was the host of TVO's "Saturday Night at the Movies"). If you've ever read any of Leonards novels Season One felt very much like one of them come to life. I enjoyed it immensely.

Season 2 got a bit soapy for my taste.

I don't think Ford makes anybody neurotic except perhaps those

Rob Ford likens himself to the eccentric former boxer and convicted rapist, saying they’re “cut from the same cloth.”

September 9, 2014 @ 7:37 PM

@ Glen - I watched the first season of Justified, because I had heard good things about it, and it had Walton Goggins as a co-star. I found it fairly light, am really not sure if I will give Season 2 a try. What with SOA to catch up on, Outlander to keep up with, and Survivor about to start.

Any Peel voters out there? Anyone think Brampton's Susan Fennell will be elected again? Another mayor (and council) with a lot to answer for.

Soknacki is out, will he say what he can honestly say, without the filter? He has more power now.
Otherwise, the press is going to win this for Ford.

Going into the city Sunday, (sometimes I drive downtown, sometimes I take the subway, less headache via subway but actually cheaper to drive in and pay parking). A little pressed with a timed ticket for the AGO I opted to go for the sure thing and parked at York Mills ($4), hopped on the subway ($3). Only after the door closed and the train began to move did I find out via announcement- the train is out of service at the next stop Lawrence, all the way to Bloor for scheduled track maintenance. We would have to catch shuttle buses from Lawrence to Bloor and catch a train at Bloor.
WTF! There couldn't be a sign? The ticket booth guy at York Mills couldn't have said something? There couldn't be an orange vest guy a York Mills to warn people?

September 9, 2014 @ 10:27 PM

birthday party? My birthday is December 12. No plans for it yet. I'm just so excited about my World Series party, my Superbowl party and my Stanley cup party. Oh, then there is my NBA party with my Suns winning it all. Oh well, how about those Orioles. Great win for them last night. Two homers by Alejandro De Aza. One homer by Adam Jones. Well, next game this afternoon, a day game. Orioles are going to win before they return home on Friday. I keep telling you guys that the Orioles are awesome. My Ravens are going to win tomorrow night as well as they will just forget about Sunday.

September 10, 2014 @ 4:48 AM

It amazes me that Scotland thinks its biggest problem right now is that it needs to separate from England. I've been in Scotland twice over the last 5 years visiting friends and some extended family. While there is this long standing joke about not liking England, anyone with a job isn't for this separation. Anyone without a job and living off the dole are all for it. As you can see the numbers surge for separation you get a true idea of just how many people are sponging off the government.

September 10, 2014 @ 10:26 AM

What's with Rob Ford and boxers/wrestlers? He's now gotten endorsements from Hulk Hogan, Mike Tyson, and George Chuvalo. Great, but no serious person with influence in Toronto would ever endorse him. Shame, because he's the best of the bunch in the mayoral race. I wouldn't be voting for Ford if a serious, credible, right-wing candidate was running against him. But instead we get the nauseating Chairman Chow and John Liberal.

My political ideals match up the closest with Ford by far and that's why he's getting my vote. I believe in giving this man another chance, but with that said it's sad that a crack-smoking liar who consorts with criminals and has made enemies with virtually everyone on council is our best option. Alas, Ford More Years.

September 10, 2014 @ 11:18 AM

Rob Ford's full platform is easy to remember. It's "subways, subways, subways". No logic, reason or strategy behind it, just that one word repeated precisely three times.

Luckily for us, Ford's hit his 27% crazification ceiling and can't win.

September 10, 2014 @ 11:40 AM

Ben....Ford's platform is simple.

Lower taxes!
Lower taxes!
Don't me for details on how I will do this.

Um, no. Both Tyson and Stewart are promoting films. Both are idiots and their opinions are worthless.

Then again, your point (and your pals) is just to slag Ford.

September 10, 2014 @ 1:56 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

When someone comes to town and has something to promote, they visit with Ford and blow smoke up his ass because the media in this city seems to cover it like mad.

This has nothing to do with Stewart or Chow. It's about free pr when Rob Ford is involved.

September 10, 2014 @ 1:59 PM

Mike Tyson - Makes a spectacle about promoting Ford. Goes to City Hall and makes it a show.

Jon Stewart - Is asked about it as he is going into his movie by a Toronto reporter. Video doesn't even exist of the "endorsement". Stewart wasn't using Chow as a means to promote himself. Tyson was using Ford.

Michael Moore - He should have just shut up. I give you that.

September 10, 2014 @ 2:02 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

The main thing is that the pr circus only follows Rob Ford. It does not follow Olivia Chow (or anyone else running for mayor).

So, if you want free coverage, you have to visit with Rob Ford. Visiting / endorsing Olivia Chow or John Tory doesn't help.

September 10, 2014 @ 2:04 PM

Well, how about those Orioles. They won 10 to 6, but they made it interesting in the ninth. Oh well, a win is a win. Chen pitched a gem. The pen made it interesting. Anyway, they swept the Redsox. They are off tomorrow and then they go back home to Baltimore for four games with the Yankees. It's a double header Friday. ?Gausman and Norris pitch the games on Friday. Then Gonzalez on Saturday and Tillman on Sunday. I got my talking football. It's small. It is soft. You hit it and it talks. It says touchdown Ravens and it plays a tune and there is some cheering. Unfortunately I dropped the football and it is rolling on the floor. I can't find it. I bought the thing and now I lost it. I can't find it. I don't know where it went.

September 10, 2014 @ 6:51 PM

I found the football. It finally showed up. Anyway, it's just a little toy. I'll probably end up giving it to Carter. I'll make him into a Ravens fan.

September 10, 2014 @ 6:55 PM

I showed the football to my trainer. He told me it has a Ravens logo on one side and it says Baltimore Ravens on the other side. My trainer says I should just keep it. I'm not going to give it to Carter. It's too nice to give to Carter. The thing is that there are batteries in it, but the batteries can't be replaced because it's all shut. You can't open it so once the batteries die, it won't talk anymore. Well, no Orioles tonight. Ravens will win tonight though. They have to win over the Steelers.
