For some inexplicable reason, when I came to read Toronto Mike just now, I felt the urge to drive to BruceGreySimcoe in a brand new 2015 VW Jetta with 3 hot Asian women.

Well, 16 years ago I got married. I'm still married ;)
I got very lucky to meet someone who puts up with my crazy work schedule and I couldn't be happier. We've been together for 22 years and it's only gotten better as time goes on.

So, that's about that.

I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend. With all the shit that's gone on in the past few weeks, take a little time this weekend to enjoy the things that make you happy. Give your significant other a little tighter hug. Give your kids a little more attention and time. Have a drink with close friends and enjoy a peaceful moment by yourself.

September 19, 2014 @ 9:23 AM

Toronto gets duped again by the Fords. While everyone is feeling badly for Rob, they are blatantly using this to their political advantage. Anyone who has no problem with Robs 3 minute infomercial for his brother yesterday is just naive.

September 19, 2014 @ 9:26 AM

I guess there can never be an open mike without someone whining about the Fords.

This is why there are so many people (besides Ford nation) who want them to win.

September 19, 2014 @ 9:38 AM

Tiny Montgomery

What is the difference between whining and opining? is Argie's complaint a whine? Is Corrado's complaint a whine? Why accuse somebody of 'whining' when you could actually address the complaint being made?

September 19, 2014 @ 9:55 AM

What's the point of complaining/whining/opining about the Fords? I'm not going to sing their praises so I don't get why every open mike some random commenter has to bring them up.

I could be wrong but I would think most people are sick of the topic, no?

September 19, 2014 @ 10:02 AM

Tiny Montgomery

Yes, most people are very sick of this whole thing. It appears 73% of people are sick of the Ford drama and manipulation of news and media and deliberate confusion of public and private matters. But until it's gone you can't expect people to not have opinions. And surely having this opinion is not the same as a kid in a store begging for more cookies or treats.

September 19, 2014 @ 10:07 AM

Tiny Montgomery

Having said that Argie, I agree with you that not every discussion, every hour, every day, every minute, needs to be about this subject. :- )

But the big question is, did you click through?

September 19, 2014 @ 10:15 AM

Can someone tell me what the real purpose of the CRTC is?

From their website:

Canada needs a strong and diverse broadcasting system. We work to ensure that Canadians have access to high-quality Canadian programming in two ways:
• Each part of the broadcasting system must contribute to creating and presenting Canadian programming;
• Broadcasting distributors must make carrying Canadian TV programming services a priority

As a consumer, I resent the second point. While I enjoy some Canadian programming, I don’t like that it takes a priority. Quality should come first. Now the CRTC is looking at forcing Netflix to adhere to their rules. I also don’t trust most of their decision making which usually seems to benefit Rogers and Bell. But hey, maybe I am cynical.

September 19, 2014 @ 10:23 AM

I don't have kids or a husband. Sure there is stuff to be happy about. My Orioles are going to sweep the Redsox. Just wait. If anyone wants a good baseball team to cheer for, cheer for the Orioles. I recommend it. Also my Ravens and Cardinals play on Sunday. Ravens over Browns handily and Cardinals over 49ers handily. I want my money so I need those wins to get it. Curling this weekend. A young team will win it I hope. No Howard, No McEwan, no Frans. Too bad my trainer's team isn't in. Well, Howard won their first game, booh.

September 19, 2014 @ 11:10 AM

Long time reader, first time poster.

I had a job interview yesterday and it was the most unpleasant, vile and combative experience I've ever had.

When I got home, I said to my wife that I'd rather be unemployed than work for a man like that.

All he did was badmouth the current individual in the role I applied for (basically saying that he couldn't wait to fire him), question my abilities and, in essence, said that I was too dumb to learn his business. There is simply no way that I could see myself succeeding working in that environment.

I'm the only breadwinner in my family, and we have a baby on the way. So finding stable employment is a high priority. But not that high that I would have to discard any sense of pride and self-worth to work for this man.

My hunt continues.

That's all. Carry on.

September 19, 2014 @ 11:52 AM

@Moe: Welcome. Yeah, run fast and run far from that place. There's few things worse than working for an abusive, bullying boss. You don't want to go home every day feeling like you've been beaten down. It sucks for your emotional, mental and physical health. You owe yourself and your family better.

Even if you could put up with a jerkwad like that, there's an extremely high probability you'd quit or be fired soon anyways. Employee turnover is almost ALWAYS due to the boss being a jerk. So don't worry about "if I don't take it, I'll be unemployed". Statistically, you'll be unemployed again anyways. Take the extra time to find a long-term fit.

Trust me.

September 19, 2014 @ 12:22 PM

Apple? Pshaw! I just at a butter tart. But then again, that's because I'm entering the Markham Fair butter tart contest. Create a butter tart with a special ingredient. Top winners move on to finals at the Royal Winter Fair.

So far, I've done:
- Plain (just to get the hang of the pastry, the filling)

- Chocolate Orange in a chocolate shell (turned out more life fudge, will have to cut back on the cocoa)

- Green tea (top favorite so far-- a bit of matcha powder in the shell to turn it green. Made with honey rather than corn syrup. A bit of green tea syrup for flavor)

- Coffee (never got off the group-- putting instant coffee mix into the shell was a bad, bitter, horrible idea)

- Molasses (my personal favorite, but I don't know if it would win. Replaced brown sugar with demerra sugar. Replaced corn syrup with molasses. Added ground ginger, allspice. It tasted like a pfeffernuss-- or a molasses ginger cookie. I loved it).

A couple to work on soon:

- Beerter Tarts. Use malt barley syrup. Maybe a splash of beer. Get that beer flavor it in.

- Srirachi Tarts: Butter tart with some spice. Don't know about it, but want to taste it

- Coffee, Mark 2: This time with less suck!

What I won't be doing, since a major component is to stand out, and I'm sure these will be overdone by others:
- Pumpkin Spice Butter Tart
- Maple butter tart
- Bacon butter tart

Thanks for the welcome.

I had a funny feeling right from the start that yesterday's interview was going to be as fruitful as snorkeling in the Sahara. But, hey, gotta try, right?

And I totally get your point about "owing myself and my family better." This year - 2014 - has been a boxing match on a roller coaster for me, professionally.

I want to point out that, currently, I'm working on a contract basis. But that contract is set to expire. The scenario of only breadwinner + new baby on the way is probably driving me to panic.

And I've been fortunate enough to work for some of the world's largest companies at the height of their powers. So I have a track record.

Still, the thought of our new baby being born and me worrying about how I'll pay for the hospital room because I'm not working/have no benefits keeps me up at night.

Thanks Lorne, for the kind words.

September 19, 2014 @ 1:36 PM

Best of luck with your tart prep and experiments. I think you should put all of the clichés together to make a maple bacon pumpkin spice tart... Maybe put a little sea salt to go over the top.

September 19, 2014 @ 1:47 PM

@Toronto Mike

I'm in Hamilton.

Obviously I'm aware of OHIP, and yes, it costs $0 to have a baby in Canada. There won't be a whopping hospital bill when it's all said and done.

I was thinking more along the lines of if we wanted to upgrade to a semi-private or private room; how would I pay for that.

I'm probably coming across as a desperate little wimp, and I get that. As I mentioned in an earlier post, this year has been a debacle in terms of employment for me. And I've had enough.

Steady job. Fair pay. That's all.

Thanks Mike.

September 19, 2014 @ 1:52 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

For the delivery, OHIP covers a private room.

For recovery, it's not guaranteed to be private but we lucked out and got a private room anyway. And assuming there's no complications, they only keep you the one night anyway.

Good luck!

September 19, 2014 @ 1:57 PM

@ Moe Semi-Private and Private rooms are a nice bonus, however, your wife/girlfriend/surrogate won't be in the hospital for very long. The turnaround is so fast that the private room is an expense that is not a real requirement.

Save the money for diapers, wipes or clothes.

September 19, 2014 @ 1:59 PM

@Toronto Mike

When you say "OHIP covers a private room for delivery", that makes total and obvious sense. Seeing it written makes me want to slap my forehead and d'oh in Homer-esque fashion.

It was more recovery, I mean. As for complications, my wife has pre-existing health issues, and baby (according to doctor's) is smaller than normal for this far along in the pregnancy.

Anyway, I appreciate the forum. I've been reading your blog for a while. I work as a marketing copywriter and I appreciate your writing style and tone. Smart, friendly and authoritative.

Thanks again (and thanks to the hivemind too).

Goodell has been roasted over the recent off field incidents which may or may not be warranted. One thing to keep in mind though is during Bud Selig's reign as MLB commissioner (from 1992 onward) there have been 18 cases reported of domestic abuse..... number of suspensions: zero.

Where are the pitchforks for Bud?

September 19, 2014 @ 2:30 PM

@ Argie - No pitchforks because no one from the MLB got caught on video knocking their wife out cold.

Ah yes, commissioner of the steroid era... I have no time for Bud, either.

September 19, 2014 @ 2:33 PM

It sad but the reason Steroids, abuse (woman or children) go unpunished is because the amount of money that is made in pro sports and how people crave it exceeds the disgust for those acts especially when its a "star" player ..Adrian Peterson as good as a back as he is, shouldn't be allowed to play again or at least until he served some sort of rehabilitation and show some remorse..Same applies to Ray Rice..People can change but they don't change without help of some kind.

September 19, 2014 @ 2:44 PM

Good point. That shouldn't be the case though.

September 19, 2014 @ 2:54 PM

Of course it shouldn't but a picture (or video in this case) is worth a thousand words.

It's the logic behind why Americans were all about WW2, but protested the Vietnam war so much...they were seeing photos of the atrocities being committed in Vietnam everyday in the newspapers. When it's put in your face like that, it's harder to ignore....

Also, America held out of WWII until they were literally invaded. Without Pearl Harbour, do they even enter WWII?

Invade America, and everybody will back the war. Vietnam was completely different.

The Telegraph-Herald – Dec. 8, 1941:

Asked whether there was an official information why Japan was able to get inside the outer defenses of the Hawaiian group, Presidential Secretary Stephen Early said it was the consensus of experts that probably all the attacking planes came from carriers which had moved forward during the night and sent their planes aloft. The attack came at dawn on Sunday.

Moved forward from where?

September 19, 2014 @ 3:57 PM

@ Mike - you are correct in a sense. The US Government stayed out of WW2 until Pearl Harbour, but there were plenty of American involvement. There were instances of American Naval Ships clashing with German U-boats, and many American Pilots served in the British Airforce.

Moreover, there was a movement at home of American Citizens who wanted their Country to enter the war...

Or, look at the Korean war. You had American Teenagers using false birth certificates trying to go and fight for their country. As opposed to the epidemic of "Draft Dodgers" during the Vietnam war.

The advent of Photojournalism has long be cited as one of the chef contributors to the Anti-War movement of the 60's

I was in your position earlier this year. Gainfully employed but needing to be doing something else for various reasons. September 19, 2014 @ 5:51 PM

This mornings National Post had an article on a young married couple living on the Kahnawake Reserve in Quebec being asked to leave because they are a mixed race couple. The woman is Mohawk and her husband is white. One of the reasons the band council asked them to leave (by the way they have 2 children) was the fear of losing their Mohawk culture.

Can you imagine if a Toronto landlord denied a native woman, her white husband and children an apartment because he didn't approve of a mixed race couple? The Toronto Star would be losing their minds and it would be front page news with a year long investigative report.

Those who want to defend this kind of discrimination think they are helping the native cause when in fact you are doing the opposite. You are hurting this native woman and others like her who made the mistake of falling in love with someone of a different race and now can't live on their own land.

Here's the article...

September 19, 2014 @ 6:13 PM

Well, best of luck, Moe. Lorne, you should maybe do an Edge with protein butter tart. That would be awesome. I love the NFL. Football is exciting. I am now liking baseball since my trainer subscribed me to it instead of buying me a present before his trip. I love hockey so pretty soon there will be three sports around and then basketball starts at the end of October. Leafs won't win though. Wait until my Habs beat them. Anyway, my Orioles start soon. Kevin Gausman is on the mound tonight. Orioles will win.

September 19, 2014 @ 6:53 PM

This is an extreme example and quite rare. You also need to realize these rules are often set by a band council & not a reflection of the reserve. And while it sounds draconian keep in mind the Federal Government, under the Indian act, stripped away native status if they married non natives and if they were born out of wedlock. That ended in 1985.

Are there natives that dislike "white" people? Most certainly. Is that hate right? Of course not but it's not that hard to understand why natives dislike white people/governments. The residential school system took kids from their parents, white washed them, raped & molested them & even performed nutritional experiments on them. We were both alive and in our working years when the last school closed. That's not even a generation away. Lets toss in the 1200+ missing & murdered native women to which most levels of government seem disinterested.

Finally, understand that band politics is much like white people politics. Rules are crafted by people with an agenda. The chief & council do what they want and there is little recourse for the citizens of the reserve. I suggest you watch Blackstone, a drama about life on and off the reserve filmed in Edmonton. It's a very real portrayal of life for a native on & off reserve, corrupt chief and all.

Then watch this video clip from 1:10 on. The actor is Eric Schweig (Chief Andy Fraser on Blackstone). He's an actor and street outreach worker here in Vancouver. Imagine if his experience happened to us regular Canadians....

Moe, you made the right decision, this employer is looking for the desperate type candidate who is fully set up for failure. I don't know your family situation, but is there a family member you can lean on to stay with for a few months to get yourself righted without worrying on the financial aspects? My niece and her husband stayed with her parents until her husband found a good position. When they were living on their own he was taking jobs just to pay the rent, and nothing of substance. Bought a Kuerig - No more morning Starbucks

Anyone have any other suggestions to add to my list?

Rent movies from the library

Dump the keurig buy a cheap perculator ( 20.00 for a good one) and get coffee for pennies a cup

September 20, 2014 @ 10:13 AM

@4x4 Time and Tim:
I was given a Tassimo machine as a gift many years ago. I enjoy it and make an effort to buy "better" coffee for it. In other words, no Nabob or Maxwell House goes in it. I often find myself stocking up on the different coffees that Kraft (who are the supply coordinators of Tassimo coffee) offers in the U.S. Just pop in to Bed Bath & Beyond while you're stateside. BB&Y U.S. has an much better selection for Keurig, too.

My favourite, though, is using my $6 French press with (ideally) freshly ground beans. I have to admit that my Cuisinart grinder was $40, but it works better than any other grinder that I have had, with the bonus of almost no mess at all. Amortize that cost and it's pretty inexpensive over the years. With these two pieces and my stove top kettle, even buying some premium coffee beans, an excellent cup of coffee costs less than buying one anywhere. As I type this, I am enjoying a delicious Seattle's Best #5 (incredibly crap blend name, their darkest roast, still "incredibly smooth" per their slogan). I buy my Seattle's Best and other "better" coffees on Great pricing and free delivery to a friend who lives in the Buffalo area. When a visit is planned, I order online.

I think a couple of the Canadian Border Services officers on the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls "know" me, as I have often come back across the border declaring well over $100 of not available in Canada coffee in bags and Tassimo pods. It's all for personal consumption, so no duty or tax is payable.

September 20, 2014 @ 10:58 AM

Well, if you want really good and cheap phone and internet service, get Primus. That's what you should do. You won't be disappointed with Primus, believe me. Rogers is crap so good that you cut them. I don't drink coffee so I couldn't recommend what you do about coffee. I don't like the stuff and coffee makes me feel jittery. Anyway, Frans is 0 and 3 or something like that in the curling spiel this weekend. Good. They won't go anyway. I don't like Frans. Unfortunately Howard and Jacobs are doing well though, but hope those teams get knocked out tomorrow by either Kean or Epping. I think those are the two teams that can cause an upset and win the whole thing. I'm saying this because my trainer's team isn't playing. Anyway, Chris Tillman is on the mound tonight for my Orioles. Hopefully he'll shut the Bosox down. I had enough of Big Poppy. I have no idea where that name came from anyway, but Orioles will win tonight. Orioles will win the World Series. Get used to it.

I'm still not voting. Nobody is going to make me vote in this crappy election. How about those Orioles. Big Poppy did homer though, but that's it. My Orioles won 7 to 2. Homers by my Orioles were two two run homers by Adam Jones and Christian Walker hit his first. I told you we are going to win the World Series. Orioles all the way. We won't stop. Ravens will win today and Cardinals will win today. Now baseball and football are on at the same time so it's hard to decide. I love football though. Football only happens once a week and baseball happens almost every day. then soon hockey will start. Anyway, Miguel Gonzalez pitches today for my Orioles. It's the last regular season home game.

Gotta give credit to the Blue Jay players today. Losing in the game & leaving the field many directed their attention to Derek Jeter who seem overwhelmed with many hugs & handshakes for his time in MLB from Jay players.

A true gentleman who played with pride for not only his team but also all of baseball. He never put himself in the spotlight, it was the Yankees & Baseball & how proud he was to wear the pinstripes.

Reggie Jackson rules, but you are a very close 2nd.

Yes, I am the sports reporter. My trainer's team is Prebble. No prebble this weekend. My trainer is only curling in a couple spiels. Dale Matchett is taking my trainer's place in the other spiels. My Orioles lost again today. That sucked. No good at all so they lose a couple to the Redsox. Well, my Ravens and my Cardinals both won. This is great. My Ravens won by a field goal. My Cardinals won by nine points. This is wonderful. I am winning in the pool by five games. I am going to win the money, of course I will. I only had one loss so far. My Ravens lost the first game. They won't lose anymore and my Cardinals are undefeated. Well, no Cardinals next weekend, but Carolina is at my Ravens. Another Ravens win.

@ Rick C in Oakville,

Hey Rick. We start the TV tour the week of October 26th in lovely Selkirk, MB. From there we goto: The Soo, Yorktown, SK, Calgary, Calgary, Cornerbrook, NFLD, Moose Jaw, Calgary, Fort McMurray, and finally end in Toronto in April. That doesn't include the provincial finals or any of the World Curling stops overseas.

I get to goto all the exotic locales ;)

It's a fun tour though. The players are a blast to hang out with and they know why we're (TV folk) are there.

Well, Edge with Protein is great stuff. You should try it. Bob Seger's album isn't out until October 14 so there's still a bit of a wait, but it wil be there then. I preordered it. Well, Orioles are at the Yankees for four games and then they are in Toronto for the final three regular season games. Seven games left until the playoffs. Playoffs start on October 2. It's my feeling that the baseball will still be going on in November. Anyway, my Orioles will win the World Series in 4 or 5 games. It won't go any longer than that. Jacobs won the curling on the weekend, another big gun team. My trainer's team is in the next spiel though in Kitchener.

Mainstreet Technologies Poll is a bit less favourable for Tory than the Nanos Poll.
John Tory: 40 per cent
Olivia Chow: 25 per cent
Doug Ford: 23 per cent
Undecided: 11 per cent

Chow takes 5 from Tory and 5 undecideds it's a new ball game

You got to vote for a Chevy NOT a Ford.

I think it's cute that some people still believe Chow has a chance. What's that line from Dumb & Dumber??? "So you're telling me there's still a chance"

Argie your tone is so condescending. You might want to try going beyond the passive/aggressive reactions and converse in an adult manner. Since when are mathematical percentages 'cute?' If this was a middle school English exam I'd have to deduct marks for inattentive reading, poor paragraph comprehension, and careless vocabulary choices.

My Orioles lost 5 to 0. this really really sucks. They get no runs. It's awful. They better not have a big long losing streak. That's awful. Also the Jays had to win so I guess the Jays could be in the playoffs still, but I hope not. I'm just so pissed off and on top of this, Dennis Pitta is gone for the season from the Ravens. That sucks as well.

You're not being cute now - just mean.
