@Toronto Mike

When's the next episode of your podcast and who's the guest?

August 19, 2014 @ 9:21 AM

It's unbelievable how someone can despise baseball and bash is constantly and suddenly become obsessed with it and hang on every pitch.

I'm not naming names, but a certain Orioles fan has gone 180.

Commenters come and go throughout the years. OJ Boy was a heavy commenter from about 2005-2009 but rarely pipes in these days.

He was last heard from March 9th when he commented on Spirit of Radio Sundays on 102.1.

@bluesnoodler

This week will be Raymi the Minx and next week will be Mark Hebscher.

@Lyle Lanley

As an adult new to baseball, Cheryl's going to have to learn how to follow the sport. It's a long season, with lots of ebbs and flows, and great teams are going to lose at least once every three days.

August 19, 2014 @ 9:36 AM

Lyle Lanley

@Toronto Mike

True!

But what gets me is how she chose her favourite team. She basically looked at the standings and went with the team in first place and because a die hard.

Not cool, Cheryl!

What's a raymi the minx?

Hebsy will be cool!

Raymi the Minx is a local blogger. She's actually a friend of a buddy of mine. Apparently she's a great lady!

I don’t have anything against Cheryl, but I don’t know why she needs to cheer at the Blue Jays defeats. Cheering for your team to win is great, cheering for the defeat of another while on a site called Toronto Mike seems very schadenfreude.

August 19, 2014 @ 11:02 AM

@ McNulty - But she does it for all 3 Major Spots in Toronto...Leafs Suck, Raps Suck, Jays Suck.

She ain't a fan of the T-Dot

They are fantastic.

@Mike. Peaches by Presidents of the USA MUST be the worst lyrics ever. Please explain to me why I am wrong.

Silly lyrics, fun song.

August 19, 2014 @ 3:05 PM

Philly-Bob

@ Boomer-

Examples of worse lyrics than Peaches:

Three Days Grace - "I must be running out of luck cause you're just not drunk enough to fuck"

Nickelback - "I've got both hands on the wheel while she's got both hands on my gear"

Fall Out Boy - "All the boys who the dance floor didn't love, and all the girls whose lips could move fast enough: Sing until your lungs give out"

Creed - too easy...pick one...

Three Days Grace - If you can't stand the way this place is, then take yourself to higher places (yup they rhymed "place is" with "places"

I could go on....at least Peaches is a fun song....

Could anyone explain the difference between LTE and 3g for me in layman's terms? I've been offered 3lte a month phone plan for 60 bucks (along with unlimited calling and texting). Is this a good deal? Thanks in advance.

August 19, 2014 @ 5:53 PM

Cheryl

Well, Orioles are my favourite baseball team. I know I hated baseball, but now I like it. Anyway, Chris Tillman pitches tonight. He will get his tenth win. Anyway, wish I could donate to the Terry Fox run. I want to. Usually places have phone numbers to call. Too bad this place doesn't. Anyway, Bob Seger's new album should be wonderful. I'm getting it. You bet I am.

The Ice Bucket Challenge initially I thought was kinda hokey, but the phenomenon that has happened has raised over 15.5MM$ in last month & has taken a lot of interest from celebrities, sports people, businesses & most notable high influential people in today's society that have accepted & done it & also donated. After you do the challenge you have to nominate 3 others to accept within 24 hrs or pay $ 100 to ALS - als.org.

I'm writing this as the challenge has come to Caledon (which Bolton is part of) & firefighters in 2 different stations have completed it & nominated others including the manager where my wife works. Manager has already accepted the challenge & will be doing it Wed. & has said he will nominate staff.

When I got home from work today wifey said her time is due & then you know who I will challenge. ME.

Can't wait as my 3 people to challenge I know & 2 are Toronto Mike commenters constantly.

Guess Who?

Canada Post wonders why they are on the endangered list, with people not wanting to use their service, shoddy customer service etc. Here is my rant.

My daughter sent Xpress post a birthday gift package to her friend on Logan Avenue July 29th. Paid extra for Xpress delivery to ensure it arrived on time.
A week after this she hangs out with her friend, but is disappointed he doesn't mention the gift. Last week get a notice for a parcel at the Post Office to be picked up. Turns out it's the gift she sent out. We go to claim it and they tell us there is return postage owing. Question why it never was delivered, and they show us the package. Someone at the Post Office had scratched out the address and wrote "Can't do that to this Address". Huh? Valid address (it's a home) Postal Code is correct. Friend confirms no package ever attempted to be delivered.
We leave it with the post office as someone is to call in and find out why it is being returned. No call by last Friday, go back to the post office, new counter person, tells us they will call Monday and find out why. Never hear from them. Went back tonight, different counter person. She tries to explain we had probably wrote the address incorrectly or something like that, show them on Google street view it is a valid address, postal code is correct. She can't offer any explanation, but if we want to pay the return postage due and then pay again to resend it it should get there? WTF? I pay the postage due and get the package back, asked for Canada Posts Customer Service number to complain. Waited on hold 55 minutes today until I had to throw in the towel and hang up.
I can't wait for our neighbourhood to go to the new super boxes, I will just leave all the Junk mail they currently are delivering to fill it up until they can't jam anymore into the cubby hole.
Heading to Purolator tomorrow to get this package delivered properly.

Be warned, though. Purolator is 91% owned by Canada Post.

August 19, 2014 @ 9:38 PM

Cheryl

Well, that's Canada Post for you. They're lazy. They're slow. They're like rogers and Bell, but at times we do need them though. Anyway, I have no idea why they screwed up that package. Wish Primus had another mail company. Well, Orioles did it again. 5 to 1. chris tillman gets his tenth win. How about that. Wonderful. Nine games up. Nick Hundley homered. JJ Hardy doubled a couple times on his birthday. It was his birthday yesterday. He just turned 32. Oh, my trainer's wife did lose in soccer again. They only have two wins, but apparently everyone makes the playoffs so still the chance for the cup. Anyway, I am going to get a friend of mine to help me donate to Terry Fox. I really want to do it.

Colour me lucky.
Never a problem with Canada Post.
I use online tracking
to keep track of where the parcel
has gone and
it's always been in transit
to the right place
not Bulgaria
or Milhaven.

@ Rick C
Your experience with Canada Post reeks of poor training or zero accountability. I have never had a bad experience with CP like the one you described; however, I believe 100% that your story is accurate, because the employees at my local post office (read: tiny desk shoved at the back of a Shoppers Drug Mart) are hardly customer service stars.

August 20, 2014 @ 10:49 AM

Rob

I sell a lot of stuff on EBAY and ship through Canada post. I've never had an issue in the five years I been buying and selling.

My parents had an issue at work where they weren't receiving checks clients claimed to have sent. They reported to Canada post a few times and they never really acknowledged the issue. My mother had to be persistent and eventually their response was "we can't comment but your issue is under investigation". A year later we were informed the investigation was completed and the parties involved were no longer with Canada Post. The guy vaguely confirmed theft was occurring via the guy who delivers the mail but wouldn't flat out say it.

People complain Rogers is horrible as well when it comes to customer service but I have always had a good experience. They always price match when I call. I deal with them for tech/service related issues at least 2-3 times a year and always get through right away and get excellent service.

I'm never certain when I hear these horror stories if the bad service is the standard or a case of those who have bad experiences scream the loudest. Maybe the bad experiences are clearer in the memory than the two dozen good ones.

August 20, 2014 @ 11:09 AM

Broni

@ Rob
In my experience, it is because the bad experiences are soooooo frustrating.
Good customer service should also be acknowledged. I love telling the story of the time a plastic clip broke on my daughters' Melissa & Doug art easel. I phoned the company and a real live human being answered the phone. She didn't shuffle me off to another department. Right then and there, she told me to throw the broken parts in the garbage & promised to mail me replacement parts at no cost. The call was finished in just a few minutes and the new parts arrived in less than a week.

My friend helped me donate so the donation came through. That's good. I'm glad I could donate. Anyway, let's go Orioles. I feel a sweep coming on.

I am like This Guest...

I use Canada Post
I fly Air Canada
I use Bell for everything - including FANTASTIC FIBE!

No significant problems with any and if there were, they fixed it and I have forgotten any negatives.

August 20, 2014 @ 5:08 PM

Mike from Lowville

Local peaches are good but they go bad fast, just like the tomatoes. I think too much rain has caused many many problems. Corn is hit and miss. I don't normaly strip the cobs before I buy (stays fresher longer) but this year I do becuase of the hit and miss factor.

August 20, 2014 @ 5:55 PM

Cheryl

Well, Rogers sends out junk mail all the time. That's my complaint about them. Canada Post will put it in my mailbox anyway because they say they have to put it in there whether I want it in there or not. Primus never sends junk mail. Primus hardly ever goes down. I had Bell a while back, but Sympatic was often down and they had bad customer service. I'm so glad I gave up and got Primus and I will never go back. Well, Wei-Yin Chen is pitching tonight for the Orioles and he is also very good. The Jays won earlier though. Well, it's only one win. My Orioles will win tonight.

August 20, 2014 @ 6:01 PM

Rick C in Oakville

I've used Canada Post in the past too, and no issues. Just seems when the ball gets dropped, it gets dropped hard. I don't mind the return of the item, but having to pay for it's return and no explanation other than some incomprehensible "Can't do that to this Address" as the only comment makes you crazy.

Sat on hold for 30 minutes today at lunch and had to abort the call to do some work. Purolator has it now, and I can be guaranteed it will be delivered, probably tomorrow.
Yes Canada Post owns Purolator but they don't have the Legacy issues Canada Post has, they truly have to compete with Fed Ex etc.
Thanks all for weighing in.

Mike: just thought of a podcast guest! Ed the Sock. He and his wife are doing a podcast to, so it's good cross promotion. They're local. They're on Twitter. Yes? Yes? =)

Well, Orioles win again. This was a nailbiter. Wei-Yin Chen won his 13th game. Then Darren O'Day came in and Zack Britton closed it out. Home runs were by Steve Pierce and Nelson Cruz. Anyway, day off tonight. Then tomorrow afternoon they are at the Cubs. Kevin Gausman will do the pitching. There you have it.

Mike, I want to make the public aware on how underfunded our hospitals are. I was hoping you could get the word out there.

My 76 year old dad who was suffering from dizziness and being unsteady on his feet we took him to emerg in the Brampton Civic hospital. The doctor looked at him and said he needed to be admitted. It took over 48 hours to get him a bed!!!!! This is the Massive hospital in Brampton with no beds available??
During that time, he was on a gurney in the Urgent care ward which is a walk in clinic for cuts sprains and other non-emergency related issues.
His curtained area was right in front of the reception desk so there was absolutely no privacy.
Needless to say, the nursing staff in this department were not suited for those in need of proper care.
We did not feel comfortable leaving my father there for any period of time as he would have been forgotten about.
There were a few nursing mishaps that happened along with NO Communication with us which angered me.

We complained, wrote to his MPP who contacted the hospital But not one got in touch with us.
It was Day 2 and I had enough, I used twitter to voice my anger. Within 30 minutes the Executive director of clinical services called me directly explaining the lame assed reasons and apologized profusely.
Within the hour my dad was given a bed and has had the proper care he needs.

The problem is they have the room and the beds but they do not have the funding from the provincial government to staff these empty rooms.
Something needs to be done. No one should have to go through an experience like this .

@Bdot
Unfortunately, your experience with our "wonderful" health care system is not unique.

However, I don't think its matter of lack of funding. Its more a matter of mismanagement of resources, inept staff and abuse of the system by people who should be paying out of their pocket to use our hospitals (i.e. people who don't live in Canada, yet seem to get free health care from a broken system).

When you find out how much money the province pours into health care and the millions, if not billions, that is donated to our hospitals, you realize money or lack thereof, is not the problem.

On the other hand, I suppose the province could pour even more billions into health care and raise our taxes that much more. To be honest, I don't like that solution.

My recent (extensive) experience

@this guest
Look at the big picture. Too many people base their general opinion on their one or two experiences with something.

From my personal dealings with our health care system, I would say everything is great - no issues. However, I know its that I've been lucky but there are tons of horror stories which lead me to believe the system is broken and needs fixing.

August 21, 2014 @ 11:43 AM

Joe Thornton has been stripped of the "c" in San Jose. Is there a way the Leafs can acquire him without giving up Kessel? I'm sure the Sharks would want Kadri and either Gardiner or Reilly. The man is an assist machine.

He might be worth it for a few seasons.

August 21, 2014 @ 12:20 PM

Corey

@Argie -

I'd get rid of Kadri in a heartbeat.

Just got nominated for ALS ice bucket of water challenge. I was actually dreading this. Not because I have a thing against ALS or a charitable donation. I have an issue with this for several reasons. First being I donate to 4 charities that are close to my heart I'd rather concentrate more money on those charities than spread it thin across 20. Where were all these charitable donations from people 6 months ago? Clearly if you can raise that money now you could have been giving earlier in the year. I get what this has done for ALS and by no means do I begrudge them the money or what this stunt has done for awareness. Thirdly, I'd rather be nominated and simply donate than put a video up on Facebook, maybe i'm jaded and grumpy today, but it doesn't sit well.

Congrats to those who have done it though and those who have raised or donated money.

August 21, 2014 @ 3:31 PM

Corey

Just for you, Ben:

August 21, 2014 @ 4:12 PM

this guest

hey Argie,

I understand and agree the microcosm isn't the macrocosm
but if we really want to look at our system
(warts and all)
and take a trip to a few places around the world and
compare what we have with them.
I'll bet we end up looking pretty darned good.
Not at the top but near the top in terms of accessibility,
quality of care, cost (taxes plus extras), etc...

I would say we're very lucky overall. But of course
all human systems are imperfect and can be improved.

August 21, 2014 @ 5:11 PM

Cheryl

Well, maybe my Habs should get Joe Thornton or my Coyotes. Those two teams will be in the finals. That's a great thing. Anyway, Leafs won't make the playoffs next year either. That's awful the hospital had no beds or lack of staff. Well, I guess that's what it is, leaving people out in the open. Something has to be done about this stuff and then a while back, some hospitals got closed. That wasn't good. Anyway, who knows what's going on if funding isn't a problem.
