Rainy day in the city, and I'm still bummed about Robin Williams.

If you listen to Sports radio, who is the person that when they come on the air, you immediately changes channels? For me it is Butch Carter. That dude’s voice is so boring and monotone he could put an insomniac to sleep.

You drop an ice cube on the floor...Do you -
1. Pick it up, wash it off and put it in your drink?
2. Kick it under the fridge?
Enquiring minds want to know....

I have a business meeting in Memphis in early October. Just checked airfare pricing, and as I live in Burlington and have a Nexus card, Buffalo is not a hassle for me. What a difference.
From Toronto on AC connect in Chicago with United - $1,453.04 CDN$ Taxes in
From Buffalo on Southwest connect through Baltimore - $420.70 USD$ Taxes in

@4 x 4,
Add in airport parking in Toronto for $28 a day
$55 preferred parking in Buffalo for a week.
I've had Nexus for 5 years now and I really don't know how I traveled without it.
Flying to Myrtle Beach in October for a week out of Niagara Falls, NY with Spirit. $160 US return

RE: Sports radio - It used to be Mike Wilner for me...but now, it's probably the outdoor/fishing guys on Sunday mornings. I hear what you're saying about Carter, but I kind of like his outsider-now-insider take on Canadian sports...much like Greg Zaun.

Re: Ice cube - I'll pick it up and throw it in the sink

RE: Airports - If I'm flying to anywhere in the states, I'll leave from Buffalo. The Airport tax in Toronto alone makes it worth the drive. Plus recently, I haven't been too impressed with the service at Pearson.

RE: Sports radio - there's a guy whose name escapes me but I think hes on weekend days on 590 . He ignores his guests replies and comes up with the most unlikely and frankly stupid scenarios,never mind the kind of whiny voice.

Re: Ice cube - I'll pick it up and throw it in the sink.

RE: Airports - I've never flown out of buffalo ,but then i've only flown to a US destination once since I was 10 and Buffalo wasn't an option really anyway.

Im curious. If Fords office is at city hall why was their no evacuation? Thats protocol in any bomb threat

August 12, 2014 @ 11:27 AM

Jacob

@Intel
They didn't read the protocol manual. Their dad was an MPP, so they didn't need to.

August 12, 2014 @ 11:41 AM

Argie

@James
You must be thinking of Jeff Blair. He's got that annoying whiny voice to go along with his questions that each last about 5 minutes.

@Intel & Jacob
So Ford gets a bomb threat from some loony and he's the bad guy? OK.

August 12, 2014 @ 11:57 AM

Jacob

@Argie
City Hall gets bomb threats all the time, and it's standard practice NOT to disclose it unless absolutely necessary.

This instance reeks of Rob and Doug playing the victim card, or using it to distract from something else.

August 12, 2014 @ 12:06 PM

Intel Analyst

He received the threat in the evening on Sunday and CityNews is reporting police were contacted just before 11 AM on Monday. Imagine the legal ramifications if this bomb had of existed and detonated prior to him calling the police to report it.

the 'threat' was an email right?
are they going to bother tracking it to the 'sender's' account?

if this was a crime novel what might be the possibilities:

1. self sent to stir up 'pity' and 'outrage'
2. dirty trick by another campaign (finding a loony tune volunteering for an opponent and setting them up)
3. a genuine nutbar with no capabilities of carrying out anything mentioned
4. somebody Rob Ford 'owes' making something known to him

?

A friend who is a travel agent spent some time explaining to me what I think is the majority of the difference in fares in Canada versus in the US. Some of it just blows your mind. Of course, the first big difference is Canadian taxes and fees at many levels, along with operating costs, which we all know are meaningfully higher in Canada for a multitude of reasons.

Airport security is a "user-pay" approach in Canada, in that part of your airfare as an air traveler funds airport/airplane security. You travel, you directly pay for the security. In the US, airport security is funded out of federal government "general revenue"; not a "user-pay" system at all.

Then there are also provincial taxes, such as aviation fuel taxes. Some provinces have significantly reduced or eliminated their aviation fuel taxes. Ontario's aviation fuel taxes are already the highest in the country and will soon be twice as much as the second-highest province, Manitoba. Even living in Ajax and needing to drive a couple of hours to the Buffalo or Niagara Falls airports, saving hundreds/thousands of dollars is difficult to resist. Doing that, the only thing I think I would miss is WestJet's friendly, efficient service, which is all that I have experienced flying with them.

What the hell has happened to mobile data plans??? My 3-year contract with Virgin Mobile is set to expire. My current plan is $60/month and that gives me a huge 6GB worth of data. A good data plan is important to me since I commute to downtown Toronto daily, so virtually every minute I spend on the GO train, I'm online. Even so, my 6-month trend is 2 GB of usage per month.

I've discovered now that if I want to upgrade my phone, I have to take one of their shiny new plans. My current one has been conveniently deprecated. The new plans are as follows: 500MB for $70/month, 1GB for $85/month, or 3GB for $105/month. Basically, in order to continue at my current average usage, I'll have to pay $45 MORE per month, for half the data. I suppose this is the consequence from going from 3-year contracts to 2-year contracts. They've just raised the rates on everything to make up the difference. I'm not doing it. Paying $200/month for internet and TV already galls me. I'll be damed if I'm paying $100 for mobile access.

Anyone have any other better suggestions with other providers? Has anyone tried WIND?

August 12, 2014 @ 3:19 PM

Al The Royal Pain

I had similar issues when I bought my new phone. The poor excuses we have for telecom companies have us over a barrel.

I eventually went with Wind. As long as you stay near the city, it's great! Unlimited everything for $40/month. Once you leave the 400 corridor however, it's not very good. For my commute, it works just fine. I'm on the GO train as well and it's more than enough for me.

Virgin mobile looked to be the next best option.

Okay. Just throw the ice cube in the sink. That is if I can find it. If not, then it melts on the floor. As for sports radio, I don't listen to Fan 590. I listen to Habs or Coyotes radio for my hockey, Suns radio for my basketball and Cardinals radio for my football and now that I am into baseball, it's Orioles radio or Diamondbacks radio, more Orioles radio though. Anyway, speaking of Orioles, they play the Yankees again tonight. Hopefully they win, but Manny Machado sprained his right knee so he may not be back for a long time, maybe out indefinitely. As for telecommunication, get Primus. Trust me. You won't be sorry you ever did. You'll be happy.

August 12, 2014 @ 4:50 PM

markosaar

@Corey,

Ask people physically around you about Wind. Some friends swear by it, but it doesn't work inside my apartment, nor at either of my last two offices.

I decided to just pay the higher rates personally. I unfortunately broke my old phone, dropping it from a height of about 1 foot. (No longer reads sim cards.) And I'd really rather have a phone I can depend on.

Also it's BS that the two-year contracts necessitate these higher rates, just another excuse.

Jeff Blair reminds me of Martin Short's character Brock Linehan on SCTV where he would ask these long drawn out questions and the celebrity would forget what the question was.
I couldn't find Brock Linehan's interview Bob Hope of (AKA Dave Thomas) which is great but here's his interview of Linda Hopkins.

Rain and more rain. Well, my Orioles game got wiped out. My Diamondbacks played a bit, but then that had to stop because of rain. Maybe all stadiums should have a roof. How come some have them and some don't I wonder. Oh well, in a way this is good. Manny Machado and JJ Hardy are both injured. It will give them time to rest though, but I'm worried about Manny Machado though. Seems like that knee was sprained pretty bad. Anyway, hockey hardly ever gets canceled unless weather is really bad. Oh well, I did tell my trainer I liked his gift. He was glad to hear it and told me he was glad he got me to try it. He wasn't too sure what he was going to buy me anyway so this was better in the end. Well, give the baseball site credit. It's very easy to navigate for a blind person. Hockey is as well, but it's because there is a blind person who made a special hockey site. Also it's not possible to adjust the hockey volume, but the baseball volume can be adjusted. It's possible to turn the game down so Jaws speaks louder than the game or turn the game up.

August 12, 2014 @ 8:14 PM

It's getting to a point that I only listen to 680 news especially for traffic & weather the last 2 weeks.

ALL the sports stations which I've listened to constantly in the past 2 years have become a lost continent. Morning radio has become atrocious with Fan & TSN. Prime time even worse. Bob McCowan is great but his show is dissolving to nowhere lately.

Andrew Walker is the best of the bunch, Brady & Mike Richards time to move on.

Robin Williams, you were an icon to me. Your acting, from comedy, serious & voices to animation made me cry & laugh that will be never be seen again. NOBODY can replace your entertainment overall.

Jeff Blair was just brutal.I say was
brutal cause I no longer listen. Rogers hires a newspaper guy with no radio experience whom studders and coughs into the mike constantly and rambles on to guests so long that the guest needs a GPS to know if a question had been asked in all those words.All you kiddies in broadcasting school Quit today,there is no future,enroll in cooking school,do you 2 year course ,stand top 3 in your class,so you can get a split shift job 6 days a week at Mr. Sub
You would be better off.

Well, this sucks. Okay. My diamondbacks played for a little while in Cleveland, but then the game got called for rain. Instead of just continuing where they left off, they have to start all over again. Anyway, it's a double header starting at 4:00 today so you get one game after another, no break between games. This sucks. I know. I am starting to like baseball, but two games in a row. Also I don't know when the Orioles game will be made up. They didn't say. If all stadiums had roofs on them, then there would be no rainouts or rain delays or anything. some have roofs, and some don't. If you have two very very long games in a double header, then baseball could last all day long, couldn't it. Maybe there should be a few hours off between games in a doubleheader.

No not Blair but I don't have much love for him , Walker in the morning seems to get better all the time.

It's Roger Lajoie , I really can't stand the guy. I think I liked him some before but not now.

I don't listen all that much anyway Most of the summer i'm on my bike and either listen to the wind or MP3's .

In the winter between my non sports fan GF and 9 year old talk radio gets old pretty fast so we talk ,sing (very badly) or MP3's

Blair might not have a polished broadcast voice but he is one of the smartest baseball guys there is. I'd rather listen to an intelligent commentator who knows his stuff vs. a great radio voice who only knows a moderate amount about the subject matter.

Hey Mike,
Any truth to the rumour that Dean Blundell will be doing the new morning show on the Fan 590 ??

If Blundell is doing the new morning show on The Fan 590, Andrew Walker sure is good at playing dumb. I sat in the same room and spoke to him for over an hour including "off the record" chats about radio and he knew nothing of the sort.

Manny Machado to the DL. Boy, this is going to hurt. He has a right knee sprain. The Orioles called up someone named Cord Phelps. I don't know how good he actually is. Anyway, we'll see I guess. They won't be rained out tonight I hope.

@4x4; Had the same dilemma flying to Dallas last May. $800 and change with Air Canada, or Buffalo at $300.00. Buffalo was a piece of cake (first time for me), will be going to Minneapolis in November, booking through Buffalo again. Wish I could fly to Canadian destinations from Buffalo. Calgary $885.00 round trip from Toronto. Anyone else notice Air Canada and Westjet haven't been putting on any sales from Toronto, unless you want to fly only on a Wednesday red eye with a Harvest moon? Always Regina to Edmonton or Moncton. I use to watch for these all the time as you could easily save $300.00 round trip.

I've been following the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS & the $ raised so far has been MUCH more than expected this year with celebrities & especially sports players accepting (more NHL players than others so far).

A co-worker at 52 years old was diagnosed 2 years ago & initially that was Parkinson's disease. He was devastated when told about Parkinson's. More tests as symptoms got worse & finally ALS. I remember coming into my cubicle saying I wish it was Parkinson's. Mentally he was 100% but physically deteriorating very quickly.

Just waiting for !! as he left work 8 months ago & now bedridden at his cottage.

The Bucket Challenge is a great promoter for this cause. Check it out.

Orioles won. I thought they were going to lose this won, but they rallied. Homers by Adam Jones and Jonathan Schoop. Great win. Chris Tillman started, but didn't win. Darren Oday won the game and Zack Britton saved it. There you have it. Diamondbacks split the doubleheader as well. They're still way out of the playoff race, but my beautiful Orioles are there. they're eight games up now. Orioles don't play tonight. They're in cleaveland this weekend and tonight my diamondbacks are in Florida.

Looking at that Bring Back The Dome webpage, the petition is trying to get the name changed to "Rogers SkyDome". I always thought this should have been the new name anyway. It's the best compromise between the heritage of the SkyDome name plus the reality that Rogers must be part of the stadium's name. Only mistake I see on that page is the fact they call Rogers a sponsor, when in fact they own the building.

August 14, 2014 @ 1:55 PM

Well, my Orioles don't play tonight, but my Diamondbacks play in Florida. They won't make the playoffs, but doesn't hurt to listen anyway. I didn't think I would like baseball so much. It was my trainer buying it for me. I'll have to pay for it myself next year. Of course I want it for next year. My orioles and Yankees play a doubleheader on September 12. They're waiting until September to make it up. This one is going to be perfect. There is a 1:00 game and a 7:00 game. That's the way it should be so there is a break between games. I don't know why they don't always do it that way. The Orioles announcers called it a two admissions doubleheader so that's what it will be. I wonder why they don't have a hockey doubleheader.

August 14, 2014 @ 6:45 PM

Cheryl

Well, Bob Seger is supposed to have some new music out really soon. bob is the best. He is old, but still can sing and will be around for a long time yet. I know this. Anyway, my diamondbacks blew it last night in extra innings. They were winning, but didn't win as they blew it, but they'll miss the playoffs anyway. I don't know why they aren't doing that well. they should be doing better than they are. Well, Orioles in Cleveland this weekend. They'll win. Orioles will clinch first place very soon. Then nobody can catch them.
