I was chatting with a friend the other day about facebook. They asked me "why do you bother, its such a waste of time." I replied, "yeah it is, but I like to see stupid, ya know what I mean?"

So our IT guy nominated me for this Ice Bucket Challenge yesterday. This is a weird one because I can either dump a bucket of ice water on myself, or donate to ALS.

I've decided to go with option 3 (which I just invented):

I'm going to do it in the aprking lot of my work and charge my co-workers $2 to watch....then donate that money to ALS.

August 22, 2014 @ 9:49 AM

I'm so disppointed in Henry Rollins for his views on suicide.

He says 'fuck suicide' and I say 'fuck Henry Rollins'.

August 22, 2014 @ 10:53 AM

I would agree with everything Rollins shad to say on this IF, and this is a big IF, if Williams or any other person who kills themselves was in the right state of mind at the time (i.e. logic is no longer part of the picture). It seems Rollins doesn't grasp that concept.

Having been given the ALS ice bucket challenge this morning, I was about to post here "Who's been given the ALS ice bucket challenge?", then I see Philly-Bob above. My family has been hit by ALS. Cancer, too. I regularly donate cash to those and other good causes. So...donate some more, or will there be a bigger impact by giving others the ice bucket challenge. The cold water doesn't bother me. Hell, in residence in university, our building's water heaters all conked out. After the tanked hot water was gone, I took the $20 bet (this was 1982) and had a full shower anyways. Yeah..."shrinkage" (I know that some of you are thinking that). My girlfriend at the time later "alleviated her 'concern'" that the effect was not long-term.

There are many good causes out there to donate to. Currently, ALS has a 100% mortality rate and the affected person is 100% aware of what is happening to them right up to the very end. Ice bucket challenge...whether you get challenged or not, please consider making a cash donation to ALS research and care. Money is really needed more than demonstrations of bravado.

August 22, 2014 @ 11:11 AM

I did the ALS ice bucket challenge yesterday. I still enjoy seeing other people's videos, and think it is a great cause.
I know of people that roll their eyes, and think that this challenge is getting old and they are tired of seeing it. Too any of you that feel that way, too bad !! This thing will eventually run its course. Get on board, and support the cause - I suggest the Canadian organization, and keep the $$ on this side of the border.

Well, three day games in a row for my Orioles today, tomorrow, and Sunday all at 2:20. I'm self employed so I can listen to the game this afternoon. It better be worth listening to. It should be. Orioles at Cubs. Apparently the Cubs play a lot of day games. Well, Orioles will win. Kevin Gausman is on the mound. Orioles are the best home run hitting team in the league.

As I understand it, clinically depressed people can come to the conclusion the world is better off without them. In that state of mind, you believe you're doing good by killing yourself.

Blind Dave

We've cooled off, but it's still nice (early 20s) for the last days of August. Mind you, I was doing some sweeping on my back deck and noticed we have a few yellow or even crunchy leaves. I am NOT ready for winter yet!

I am off today (every second Friday this summer) and yet again it is going to cost me money. When do I learn? Oh well, the time away from work is worth it. My wife & teen son want to go go Wal-Mart and there is a "list" made. This means list plus extras.

I get my granddaughter this evening, so I'm thinking a bbq and a trip to the park is in order.

Happy Weekend All!!!

@Toronto Mike,

Thanks. I didn't think it was really necessary. It's a small thumbnail anyway, and has to load whenever someone opens the comments. Easy enough to just click the link if someone's interested in judging how strictly I obey the law on a bike ;)

August 22, 2014 @ 12:26 PM

First bike commute today to my new job location, and it was great. Mimico to Queen/John via the lake, north on Strachan, then along the new bike lanes on Adelaide, which are fantastic and will get better over time as the city improves them. Was previously riding to Bloor/Jarvis and although I love the new Sherbourne bike lanes, working a 40-minute ride to work is easier to do on a regular basis than a 60-minute ride.
My huge pet peeve is this: regular bicycle commuters that ride through red lights or ride faster than 20 km/hour on the Martin Goodman Trail when there are pedestrians present. It gives the majority of cyclists an undeserved bad rap.

August 22, 2014 @ 12:57 PM

I used to get to do that commute in the opposite direction. And agreed re: the guys in full team kits blasting by everyone at 50 km/hr. And red lights. And may I add, going the wrong way down one-way streets.

Instead of Strachan, I preferred taking Fort York Blvd (also has bike lanes) to Bathurst and then Adelaide... less stops, and none of the awkwardness of walking your bike at Adelaide & Bathurst.

August 22, 2014 @ 1:26 PM

Henry Rollins had his friend murdered in front of him during a robbery, and he barely escaped. I would imagine that gives you a view on life and death that not many can understand either.

August 22, 2014 @ 2:13 PM

@ markosaar
Thanks for the route trip. What's the best way to join Fort York Blvd from the Martin Goodman Trail?
And, is there any benefit to cutting through the Ex grounds vs the winding trail that's east of the Ontario Place parking lots?

August 22, 2014 @ 2:13 PM

There's a paved trail connecting Martin Goodman & Strachan to Fort York Blvd., on the south side of Lake Shore. I highlighted it for you here:

I don't think there's any benefit to cutting through the Ex grounds. Lots of stops and meandering cars.

What ever happened to responsibility? If you make a mistake, you man up, take your lumps, hopefully learn something and you move on in life.

I heard on the radio today, the lawyer for the guy who rammed his truck into the Burlington Skyway Bridge said his client will plead Not Guilty to a couple of charges of operating a vehicle under the influence…

This after he was found in the truck and failed a breathalyzer test.

I say it's slim to none and slim is on a Go Train heading west.

August 22, 2014 @ 4:31 PM

@Lyle Lanley

Here's the numbers...

The Jays have 35 games left to play.

We are 4 games back of Detroit for the 2nd Wild Card spot.

We are 3.5 games back of Seattle, and tied with the Yankees. Oh, and we're only a half game ahead of Cleveland.

So, we have to have a better record than Detroit, Seattle, New York and Cleveland over these 35. And much better than Detroit and Seattle, obviously.

23-12 will get us close, but I don't think it will be enough. So we really need to go 25-10.

Can the Jays go 25-10 over their last 35 games? I certainly don't think so, but at least there's a chance.

August 22, 2014 @ 4:40 PM

We lost. My beloved Orioles lost 4 to 1. The only offense was a homer by Nelson Cruz. It was no good losing to the Cubs who are one of the worst teams. Now we must win tomorrow. I took an afternoon off just to listen to a game that sucked. Not a good thing so let's win tomorrow. Bud Norris is pitching tomorrow. He's great.

August 22, 2014 @ 6:18 PM

The Jays are a better team than they were last year.

Unfortunately it's not enough to win the AL East or one of the wildcards.

I don't know how they improve this team in the off season. I'm out of ideas. If we go by last winter the Jays might not do anything except not sign a few players like Rasmus or Melky and go with the same team again in 2015.

I wish I was more hopeful.

Rick west head of TSN gave the top five choices to replace Tim Leiweke. They all have a few things in common - they're all white, middle aged men. Um, shouldn't they just ignore the best candidates and go with a woman or a visible minority? Wouldn't, that be the right thing to do, since this is 2014?

I know, Leaf fans don't worry that won't happen. This job is important.

@ Argie - How difficult or important is it to run MLSE an organization that accepts failure from their sports properties but continues to make bundles off blind fan bases? They could put an egotistical American know it all who loves Bon Jovi in there and they would still make money...oh, wait...

August 22, 2014 @ 9:04 PM

August 22, 2014 @ 11:32 PM

The smile symbol is passive aggressive bullshit. Correcting grammar is a bit of big deal. It's cutting. It's all 'hall monitor-esque'. All shit that instantly rubs me the wrong way.

So, you're likely an asshole, too.

Fly in the ointment? Are you 75?

August 23, 2014 @ 1:15 AM

Well, my Diamondbacks won last night. At least something good happened. Anyway, too bad no diamondbacks in the playoffs though. Anyway, more bad news for my Orioles. Manny Machado is out for the rest of the season. that's terrible. He needs season ending surgery. This sucks. Well, my Orioles hopefully are going to win today. they should I think, but I thought they should win yesterday. Bud Norris is pitching for them and he's very good. Not too long from now and my Arizona Cardinals will start playing. Then it will be a hard decision to make if I want football or baseball because in the middle of September they will both be on at the same time. Maybe switch back and forth. I don't know. Bob Seger's new album is out in less than two months. Can't wait as I am sure it will be good. bob Seger is the best. He still has lots of life in him. He will live for a long time yet.

August 23, 2014 @ 6:16 AM

@ Cheryl - Bob Seger covers John Hiatt's Detroit Made on his new record, you can google and find it. It is a great Hiatt tune and Seger and his band does it justice.

August 23, 2014 @ 10:17 AM

Actually it's not so much grammar or spelling that bothers me and it really shouldn't because I'm sure I probably make my share of grammar and spelling mistakes. The one thing that bothers me the most is the people who have to abbreviate everything and can't write a proper sentence. Using "u" instead of "you", "r" instead of "are", using numbers as letters and words, etc... To me it's just plane laziness. I have a friend that's really bad for that and lots of times I have to ask her what something means or what she's talking about cause I can't figure out what she's saying. It's really annoying.

August 23, 2014 @ 10:20 AM

Played my 1st golf round this year in a tournament from a freind's invitation reluctantly. Peter Holland from Leafs was playing behind us in a foursome & didn't know until the 9th hole when his ball was just behind us. I recognized him & didn't say anything until the 19th hole when I approached him & asked about Leaf Nation. He loves it & said "I recognize you" as he was freinds with both my kids at Humberview High School & played BBall in Bolton when I was coaching.

I said my kids names & he said "I remember them as my roots are in Bolton & we had good times together".

Nice story Twins from Bolton!
My sister called me out on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, but am I obligated to call out 2 more people? I'm not too comfortable calling out now as this has been running it's course the last week and it just doesn't feel sincerely spontaneous.

August 23, 2014 @ 5:14 PM

I'm worried. My beloved Orioles lost again 7 to 2. It was a very awful game. There was a rain delay after the second inning and it was 4 to 2 Cubs. I was hoping that game would just be washed out and made up in a doubleheader tomorrow, but they played three hours later and lose 7 to 2. This is not a time to be losing. Can't they get a big bat. Maybe someone on this blog can bat for my (Orioles. That's not good if they'll never win again. It's awful.

I don't think I heard Mitch Rider. Yes, that was the Bob Seger new song I heard. Anyway, the album is really coming out October 14, just after Thanksgiving. I will get it from ITunes so I don't have to wait for shipping or anything like that. Now let my Orioles win.

I like California Cabs and Italian Chianti and by no means am I a wine snob, but I cannot find an Ontario red wine I like. Have tried several and find them mostly very thin. Does anyone have any suggestions of Ontario wines they like so I can check them out?

August 24, 2014 @ 3:14 PM

@4x4 Time,

For starters I'd recommend the Sandbanks Baco Noir at $15.

For higher prices I need to dig up my notes, but you can't go wrong with Norman Hardie wines.

Also not a snob ... we drink $10-15 bottles at home, maybe $20 for a special occasion. But I do enjoy tastings and fairs.

August 24, 2014 @ 5:28 PM

I'm really sad and depressed. My Orioles lost. What a shame. The batters had no patience at the plate and swung at the first pitch. Awful awful. Does anyone want to hit for my Orioles. Miguel Gonzalez pitched a gem. He didn't get any run support so the pitching was fine. My Orioles lost. It's awful and I'm worried and I want to hide in a hole, so come on, I hope someone will bat for them. Well, back home for a four-game series with the Rays. Chris Tillman will be pitching tomorrow. Then Tuesday it's Wei-Yin Chen, then Wednesday it's Kevin Gausman and then Thursday it's Bud Norris. They're all very good pitchers, but the bats need to get going. I need my Orioles to win so do it.

Did Ice Bucket challenge today with wife who was challenged last week from work.

We did it with many others who were nominated also. A great cause & tell you the initial reaction is paralyzing just what this challenge is to promote.

I challenged co-workers & freinds.

Cheryl, Argie you are safe for now - LOL

August 24, 2014 @ 9:36 PM

I'm safe for now. I don't know about this ice bucket thing. I didn't do it yet. My Orioles need wins. They better start winning again because if they don't, there could be trouble. They need runs big time. Well, the pitching is good, but get enough runs so the other team doesn't beat them.

A few months ago during the Stanley Cup playoffs Sidney Crosby's name come up in discussions at her office - she asked "who's Sidney Crosby?". How do you not know who he is?

Next clueless question: Last week she asked my wife, "why are people dumping ice water on their heads for some bucket challenge?" My wife answers "its for ALS, you know, to spread awareness and raise funds." She comes back with this: "ALS? What's that?" If I was there, I would have called her a stupid tw%t.

Very disapointed in Humble and Fred bringing on Ashley Madison as a sponser on their show. I didn't think they were that desperate to sponser a business that causes so much pain and heartbreak in many families. Hope they can sleep well at night. They have lost me as a listener.

August 25, 2014 @ 10:02 AM

Ashley Madison made you quit? That's nothing. They've now reached the utter depths of depravity and signed on GoDaddy.

August 25, 2014 @ 10:46 AM

Who cares if Humble & Fred get sponsored by Ashley Madison. I would argue that 5 hour energy drinks have been more detrimental to the public at large than Ashley Madison ever could be. 13 deaths have been attributed to people consuming 5 hour energy before their death. Or the non-fatal reports that include anxiety, and nausea all the way to seizures, brain hemorrhages, and heart attacks as a result of consumption.

Time for people to get off their high horse on this topic. I don't condone cheating, but the people that are going to cheat will do so anyways, whether or not there is Ashley Madison. There is nothing stopping someone from signing up on e-harmony and pretending to be single so they can cheat.

Champion of the Poor-
Mayor Rob Ford has continued his annual tradition of voting against all six of Toronto’s community grants programs — and losing overwhelmingly on all six.
The grants programs give $16.8 million in taxpayer money to more than 200 non-government organizations. By far the largest of the six, the $14.3-million Community Service Partnerships Program, funds groups “working to improve social outcomes for vulnerable, marginalized and high-risk communities.”
Ford lost 39-2 on each of the six votes, joined only by Councillor Mike Del Grande, his former budget chief. For the third year since Ford was elected mayor, he did not offer an explanation.

@ Argie

You talk about clueless people not know who Crosby is or about the Ice Bucket Challenge.

True story - I work at a printing company & approx. 12 years ago one of our production co-ordinators needed a paper sample to send to a customer for quality & what it looked like. I got it & gave it to her. 10 minutes later I'm waiting at the fax machine & she is sending the paper sample to her customer by fax & throwing out the actual sample after sending. I couldn't believe what i just saw - laughing hysterically inside & another person watching also. After she left both of us said did she really fax a paper sample. We then let out laughter.

About 30 minutes later she came back to me saying she needed another sample because the fax didn't go through. I gave her another one & told her to send it via courier to the customer.
We still talk about it at work for those who know about it.

I cannot beleive how "clueless" some people are.

August 25, 2014 @ 6:25 PM

How about those Orioles. It's about time. They won 9 to 1. Chris tillman was awesome. Home runs were hit by Nick markakis, Steve Pierce, Delmon Young, JJ Hardy and Chris Davis. Awesome awesome game. Now let's do it again tonight. I really want to clinch first place. That would be so awesome. Oh well, it's all up to you if you come to my party or not, but it will be awesome. Well, my trainer's wife got clobbered in soccer on the weekend. They lost 5 to 0. Well, they suck. They only won two games. Something needs to be done or they won't get the cup. Well, my Orioles are going to win the World Series. Another game tonight. Wei-Yin Chen is going to do the pitching tonight. He's another awesome pitcher. Anyway, for the party, there will be Edge with Protein cereal, sushi, and then I'll have a cake as well. It's going to be an Orioles cake. It will be a white cake with orange icing and then black licorice pieces all over the top made into the shape of an Orioles logo. I have no idea where to get something like that, but I'll try hard. It will be an awesome cake. Yes, they are going to win the World Series.

August 26, 2014 @ 4:42 PM

Well, how about those Orioles. Another win although it was a very very slow game which reminded me why I hated baseball before. Anyway, I will take the win though 4 to 2. Brad Brach got the win. Chen didn't have it last night. Anyway, the lead is getting bigger and bigger on the division meaning my party is getting closer and closer. Anyway, there will be a cake. Maybe I can find a bakery who will make the cake and then I can order it. White cake, then orange icing and black licorice pieces all over it and it will be in the shape of an Orioles logo. My party will be so awesome.

August 27, 2014 @ 4:41 AM

What a night. My Orioles lost and this sucks. They lost 3 to 1. This really sucks. Kevin Gausman threw over 30 pitches in the first inning. This really sucks. It was awful. Chris Davis hit a home run. that was the only run they got. It's awful and I hope we can bounce back. We need this. Well, I haven't ordered the cake yet. I have to wait until they win it. Maybe the party won't be until November. I will set a date after they win it all. They will, but then they keep slipping back like last night when they lost. tonight Bud Norris pitches looking for win number 12.

Well, they did it again. That was close. It was a rough first inning. The game was slow, but my Orioles won again 5 to 4. The only homer was by Steve Pierce, but Bud Norris really had a rocky start, but Andrew Miller and Zack Britton were awesome closing it out and JJ Hardy got a clutch hit. Awesome. See, the Orioles are the best and if you want to like a good team, cheer for the Orioles. they're winning it all anyway. Now four games against the Twins. They'll beat the twins. Miguel gonzalez on the mound tonight. Now I sure hope I can find a place that will make my special cake.
