If you said it was too hot last summer, you don't get to say it's too cold this summer.

August 15, 2014 @ 9:08 AM

@Lyle Lanley

I can and I will. This is too damn cold for August.

Copenhagen's new bike path is pretty cool:

August 15, 2014 @ 9:14 AM

At my office, we're calling this Augtober.

August 15, 2014 @ 9:27 AM

Leafs choose to honour Teeder Kennedy on the Legend's Row statue. 2 more players will be announced in Sept. The next 2 should be Wendel and Dave Keon. If the bench has room for 10, including the above choices, my bench would include :

1) Teeder Kennedy
2) Dave Keon
3) Wendel Clark
4) Bill Barilko
5) Johnny Bower
6) Darryl Sittler
7) Tim Horton
8) Mats Sundin
9) Syl Apps
10) TBD - current era

Doug Gilmour has to be on that list of 10.

August 15, 2014 @ 9:37 AM

I can see that.. I could drop sundin for gilmour !

August 15, 2014 @ 9:41 AM

Sundin should be the "current era" guy, and slot Gilmour in his old spot.

August 15, 2014 @ 9:45 AM

Aurora Bob

What about Armstrong, Salming, Ellis, Joseph?

August 15, 2014 @ 10:21 AM

@Aurora Bob

There's no way CuJo should crack a list of 10 greatest Leafs.

You could make a case for the other three, though.

August 15, 2014 @ 10:23 AM

Toronto Mike: do you bike busy city streets without bike lanes?

August 15, 2014 @ 10:25 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

All the time.

My regular lunchtime route is primarily the Waterfront Trail and some quiet streets, but I won't hesitate to bike on busy rush hour streets if I need to get somewhere and there isn't a convenient and sensible alternative route with a bike lane.

But having said that, I'll typically map my routes to make use of bike friendly streets when heading north. At lunch today, for example, I'll spend some time on Royal York which is great for biking.

August 15, 2014 @ 10:41 AM

I personally feel Phaneuf should be the current era player to be erected!

I say we just erect the statue of Morgan Rielly now, because every analyst tells me he's the next Bobby Orr.

August 15, 2014 @ 10:55 AM

Wendy should never be considered one of the top 10 Leafers in history. Let the flaming begin!

August 15, 2014 @ 11:00 AM

Lol for all our sakes I hope your right Toronto Mike. Hypothetically though, who do you feel would be the best representation from our 'current' roster? (knowing no one is even close!)

If you had to pick one right now from the current roster?

I'd pick Phil Kessel.

I hate that nickname for Wendel Clark.

August 15, 2014 @ 11:09 AM

So disappointed in 107.9FM. They used to have the only listenable morning show on the air; Ben & Kerry. They had excellent on air chemistry. They were friends on and off air, and it came through in not only the way they talked, but the way they talked to each other. The discussions had an air of respect, maturity and friendship-- contrasted to the constant negativity, hatred and mocking that every other morning show was filled with.

They also had excellent things to say; their topics of discussion mostly veered away from the lowbrow. They were often insightful and almost poignant commentaries. They did more than just "discuss" the same watered down "news stories" that everyone else had read on Facebook the week before. They could have an actual argument by taking opposite sides of an issue, rather than just being insulting and contrary.

In short, it was a pleasure to listen to two mature immature adults who were friends.

Some time last year, they silently fired Kerry. No idea why. And when I tuned in recently, Ben was gone too. All that chemistry and dynamics that were great to listen to-- poof, gone, destroyed.

I had the new show on for about fifteen seconds. The new hosts said something like "To win passes to the concert, we'll test your poop trivia knowledge."

It's amazing how one sentence can so easily sum up every reason why I'm no longer a listener anymore. =(

August 15, 2014 @ 11:16 AM

As would I Toronto Mike. So this just communicated from a friend who works I.T at rogers, this morning heard talks of a potential deal in the works between Winnipeg and Toronto involving Peter Holland, Cody Franson and James Reimer and their 2015 First for Evander Kane and Zach Bogosian. Reliable and not a stupid fabricated story. Makes sense as there is no need for Bernier and Reimer, Franson is clearly not in the Leafs plans going forward and with all the re tooling of their bottom six, there's really no spot for Holland and he would have to clear waivers to be sent down to the Marlies, which he wouldn't. Excited to see what will come of this!

Radio and television has been severely dumbed down of late. On the radio, I spend an awful lot of time with CBC RadioOne because it's really the only station that doesn't make me feel dumb.

The exception is when I feel like hearing about sports which is when I'll tune in 590 and hear what they're saying.

August 15, 2014 @ 11:23 AM

To add to the conversation about cell phone plans from the last Open Mike, it bugs me that the majority of Canadians get taken advantage off by the phone companies. If you have a couple of minutes pull up one of the big 3's websites and look at the cell plans available. Then change the location setting on the website to SK or MB and see what it available. The difference is huge.

For those of you looking for a new phone or plan if you work for a large company, ask if your company has a corporate plan you can take advantage of for personal use. Just this week I discovered that I can get a plan with 6 gb of data for $50 through Telus

August 15, 2014 @ 11:56 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I agree, we get royally screwed with regards to wireless plans in this country.

Three years ago I got a 6GB plan with Rogers for $90 and quickly realized it didn't include call display. Really? Displaying the name of the person calling, even if they're already in your contact database, isn't standard? You want another 10 bucks a month for a bundle that includes that luxury?

Your Telus plan sounds great, but how many of us have such an option?

August 15, 2014 @ 12:00 PM

Apropos of nothing, they just announced that they are releasing the entire "The Wonder Years" series on DVD. The show has consistently been on the list of most wanted DVD for years, with the only hold-up being the expensive music clearances that were needed for a show whose music was so integral to the show - coming of age moments augmented with period music.
To avoid the massive uproar over the insertion of non-original music with the 1st season of WKRP, the powers held back on doing the same with The Wonder Years. But it appears that they have made a significant effort to "do it right".

Here is the announcement:
"The Wonder Years - StarVista/Time-Life's Press Release, with Song List, Shows That 96% of the Original Broadcast Music. The List of 285 Clearances Includes Hundreds of
Songs from Iconic Artists such as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Simon & Garfunkel, Jimi Hendrix, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles and The Rolling Stones, plus Classics from Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole & Many More!."

I personally loved that show. I dare you to watch the "Goodbye" episode, the one where Arnold works with his math teacher on improving his grade (it won the writer an Emmy and Peabody for that episode). It is available on Netflix.

August 15, 2014 @ 12:18 PM

Also apropos of nothing, I finally relented and watched "Star Trek: Into Darkess", only because I noticed it was available on NetFlix. What a complete steaming pile of shit. It only reinforced my opinion that JJ Abrams is a hack and is actually the perfect choice to fulfill George Lucas' mission to destroy the Star Wars franchise.

August 15, 2014 @ 12:43 PM

It's also noting Netflix in the US has the complete series of The Wonder Years with the original music. I've been watching it with my kids...

And for no particular reason except I need to archive it somewhere, here are my last 12.5 months worth of biking KMs.

I'll likely finish August at about 500 km.

August 15, 2014 @ 3:08 PM

Sorry to be "that guy", but the music on Netflix is not the original (in some instances). Case in point is the opening credits ... that sure ain't Joe Cocker singing "With a Little Help from My Friends" during the credits!

August 15, 2014 @ 3:33 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Holy shit! We're only 4 episodes deep, and I've already heard many classic songs from the era so I just assumed the original music was intact. For example, you get "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield in the pilot.

I thought something was off about the opening theme...

Now I'm bummed and don't want to continue until we can do this right.

August 15, 2014 @ 3:42 PM

Mike from Lowville

Not a Leaf fan but I think you would need to include Francis William "The Big M" Mahovlich on the top 10 list.

August 15, 2014 @ 3:48 PM

Leafs won't make the playoffs. It really will be Habs and Coyotes to the finals. That's what will happen and Habs win the cup. Anyway, I don't have a cell phone. I don't need one. I told you Bell and Rogers suck. Primus has cell phones so if I need a cell phone for any particular reason, I am going with Primus. My Orioles are in Cleveland tonight to play the Indians. Orioles will win. Diamondbacks are in Florida again tonight and the weekend. Hopefully Diamondbacks don't blow it. Anyway, Orioles have the most home runs so far. They hit the most. Orioles win the World Series this year. There will be a World Series party. Then Cardinals win the Superbowl.

August 15, 2014 @ 4:25 PM

@Toronto Mike,

Since that Ride for Heart, I've barely made an effort besides commuting. Planning on starting again this weekend.

My new job is in Liberty Village though, and rain or snow, I plan on biking every single day. It's _such_ a pain in the ass to get to by TTC. It's like 30-35 minutes if nothing goes wrong, and 45-ish minutes to walk.

August 15, 2014 @ 4:39 PM

It had to happen sometime - I finally agree with Gump. Wendell/Wendy was way over rated. I never got the unjustified love affair leaf fans had with this chump. Often injured, didn't see the ice well, couldn't fore check, etc.

Salming & Sundin are definitely on this bench - if not I'm becoming a Hans fan, dammit!

Does Monica enjoying cycling?

Some of the posters and I were thinking of buying you and Monica a tandem bike for your wedding anniversary along with matching t shirts that say "I Like Mike".

August 15, 2014 @ 6:17 PM

@Lorne The Ben McVie show is still on the air. He was probably on vacation.

Always wondered what happened to Kerry, they were great together. @Mike, any insight?

August 15, 2014 @ 6:29 PM

Just to be clear, I'm not saying Wendel wasn't a very good/great player. He was. Just not among the top 10 players of all time for a franchise that is almost 100 years old.

August 15, 2014 @ 6:56 PM

I guess we can't agree on everything - that would kind of creepy.

August 15, 2014 @ 6:58 PM

Agree Gump.

Wendel was a great player but not close in the top 10 of all time.
This is a LEGENDARY Leaf display.

My top 9 after Teeder.

I'm afraid I don't know what's happened with Ben and Kerry.

I do remember their ad for their JackFM morning show in which they hatched from an egg. You can see it on this entry I wrote about them getting fired from Jack:

August 15, 2014 @ 8:40 PM

I'm mad. My Orioles just lost. Mike Aviles or whatever his name is got a homer to end it in the tenth. My beloved Orioles lost. That's no good. That's awful. They have to win tomorrow. I just hope they don't go into a big slump or anything. They're going to win the world Series. My Diamondbacks won though. I was listening to my Orioles and surprise that I listened to the full game. Why did I hate baseball? It's not so bad and I'm subscribing next year.

August 15, 2014 @ 10:50 PM

I have no idea why Chris Davis can't hit the ball. Apparently he had 50 homers last year so if that's so, then why is he so much lower this year. Anyway, I need another Orioles win. I hope they win tonight. They have to do that. I get to meet my trainer's kid today finally. That's good. I would have met him a lot sooner if I didn't chicken out of the race.

Isis is a goddess in Ancient Egyptian religious beliefs, whose worship spread throughout the Greco-Roman world. She was worshipped as the ideal mother and winner of the first Ice Bucket Challenge.

August 16, 2014 @ 2:54 PM

Armstrong (forgot about him) instead of Sundin for Legends of Leafs.

@ Argie

The Ice Bucket Challenge has taken steps to promote awareness & has gone viral to make everyone aware. A great promotion.

If I get challenged I would nominate Argie, Cheryl & Mike to take the challenge. I maybe challenged as my Bro-in law works for Fox sports & was challenged today. Make sure you have Ice & bucket ready. I already do.

Oh goodie! I work in a department which has a disproportionately high amount of people who claim to have non-celiac disease sensitivity to gluten (interestingly they're all women). I wonder what they'll make of this report which confirms that it doesn't actually exist.

August 16, 2014 @ 5:20 PM

I drank the kool-aid for a little while, but after dabbling with it, I gave it a solid 6 week honest try -- and then was convinced it's probably bullshit, at least for me.

I find it interesting that the study also discounts 'FODMAPS'. A recent one tried to attribute gluten-sensitivity to that instead.

My problem is I have severe digestive problems ... i.e. right now I should be out at an event but instead am trapped at home.

Something is wrong with me. I had to fire my last gastrointestinologist when he suggested my problems were in my head (he was also a colossal asshole, period). My current one is extremely lauded, but I'm pretty sure he's on the wrong track with me. He seems confident he knows what my problem is, but the treatment isn't helping at all.

I've spent years studying this stuff, and I find it shocking how little is really known.

August 16, 2014 @ 6:03 PM

I don't feel good. My Orioles are losing big time. I turned the game off. They suck so bad. It's awful. This pitcher is a bum. His name is Ubaldo Jimenez. I hate hate hate this pitcher so much. Has he ever been good? I don't think so. I hate him. He should be put on waivers or something, DFA him. Put him on the DL, maybe he will get hurt again. Thing is I do not wish any human being gets hurt and he's a human being. I hate Ubaldo. He is a bum. No more Ubaldo please and my Orioles are clobbered. Do I have to say more? I'm worried they will get knocked out of first place. Well, I met my trainer's kid today. He's a nice kid, didn't cry much, babbled though. I got to hold him, but he was squirmy. Bob Seger haqs a new song out called Detroit Made. It's awesome. He will have a new album out in September. See, he is still making new music and he will live for many more years. Bob Seger is the king. I will never get rid of Primus. Primus is great.

sorry about your digestive issues. There is so much crap in our food
and half of it isn't even food just weird conglomerations of synthetic crap
floating in a bed of poison.

I don't have any answers but I do know something is wrong with 90% of the
stuff sold in regular food stores.

August 16, 2014 @ 11:49 PM

Have you tried Metamucil? I know it sounds like a simple solution but I've heard from several people it helps to regulate the gastrointestinal system and thus limit intermittent attacks.

I hope you find an answer to your problem.

August 17, 2014 @ 8:49 AM

I've given up trying to talk to people about food and diets. I've filed it under religion vs. science. The conversation always goes like this:

THEM: I'm on Fad Diet X.

ME: You know that won't work / has been scientifically proven not to work, right?

THEM: No, really. I read a book / saw it on Dr. Oz

ME: That's a nice anecdote. It still won't work. Portion control, balanced meals and exercise are the *ONLY* way to lose and maintain a healthy weight.

THEM: You just don't understand. There's this stuff in my food, and all I have to do is eliminate it to lose weight.

ME: Yeah, it's called "calories".

It usually ends there, since the person is convinced their paleo-acai-purge-glutensensitive diet will magically work without diet, exercise or any change in lifestyle. Have fun.

Oh, sometimes there's on more part of it:

THEM: I've been on my unhealthy, highly restrictive fad diet for a week now, and I've already lost FIVE POUNDS!

ME: Yeah, it's called water weight. It's the first thing anyone loses, and has nothing to do with your diet.

THEM: Can you imagine how much I'm going to lose by the end of four weeks?

ME: I don't have to imagine. I know. It'll be the exact same five pounds. Or less, if you keep eating this calorie-rich fad-crap every single day for a month.

THEM: NO YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND! Five pounds this weeks means it'll keep increasing and ten pounds next week and twenty after and fourty after and after a month I'll have lose the advertised 75 pounds.

And that's where the second conversation ends.

August 17, 2014 @ 9:49 AM

Yes we took the 30 bypass and it was great. Deffinitely worth the 2 dollar charge lol.

somebody once told me the blue algae sold as a magical food supplement was actually growing in a western (state) area lake full of carcinogenic mine runoff.

food: for example, honey:
does it have a 'pollen count?'
where is it from? Actually 'from?' does the label tell this?
what industrial solvents does it contain?
what is it actually? is it actually 'honey?'
all the deceptive practices around 'food.'

Stuff our grandparents (or great grandparents depending on your age)
didn't have to think twice about?

August 17, 2014 @ 12:00 PM

It helps, but doesn't solve anything unfortunately.

August 17, 2014 @ 5:50 PM

Happy days are here again. My Orioles won today. They won 4 to 1. The winning pitcher was Kevin Gausman. Then Darren O'Day did the seventh, Andrew Miller the eighth and Zack Britton the ninth. All awesome pitchers and home runs were by Steve Pierce and Jonathan Schoop. Awesome. That's great my Orioles could win today and the Jays lost. That's awesome. Can't wait until the World Series party. I told you my Orioles are going to win. Anyone who is fed up with the Jays should cheer for a good team like the Orioles. I highly recommend it. My Diamondbacks got clobbered on the other hand by Miami. This sucks, but they won't make it this year. Next year they will. I think next year it's Orioles and Diamondbacks to the World series. Anyway, baseball is good. I like it now. Thanks again to my trainer for talking me into trying it again.

August 17, 2014 @ 6:03 PM

I tried to donate to the Terry Fox run, but I don't know if it came through. It complained about my area code being in the wrong spot. I want to donate, but if it doesn't work, it doesn't work.

Anyway, my Orioles are in Chicago these next three nights to play the Whitesox and then starting Friday afternoon, they play the Cubs. They're in Chicago the whole week. I'll count that as six wins. Tonight Bud Norris pitches for my Orioles. My World Series party is going to be so awesome. Just wait until they win it all in October and get ready for my Superbowl party next year when my Cardinals win. It's awesome.

August 18, 2014 @ 11:05 AM

How about those Orioles. They're awesome. They won 8 to 2. Bud Norris was the winner. He's an awesome pitcher and he beat Chris Sale. Well, Sale isn't that great. Homers by JJ Hardy, Nelson Cruz and Nick Markakis. Nick Markakis is awesome. He plays good defense as well. I love baseball. Now all you guys should cheer for a good team, the Orioles. they're awesome. Yes, I'm having a World Series party after my Orioles win it all. It will be awesome. Bob Seger has a new album coming out October 14 right after Thanksgiving. I'll have it and I'll play it at my World Series party. I like baseball now. It's good, but still love hockey.
