I'm surprised (not really) that no one has mentioned the 300 plus school girls kidnapped in Nigeria.

Unfortunately this kind of shit isn't that rare over there so yes, by all means "bring back our girls" but also go after the bastards that did this.

Hello all,

A plug for my radio Air Checks Blog. Yesterday I posted a new air check of WUWU 107.7 FM from Buffalo that also has some 97 Rock. Plus my older air checks of the classic CHUM FM and CFNY have been cleaned up with improved audio. Other stations from the region are featured as well.

Plus I have posted a new audio quiz program for your chance to win a $ 10.00 Starbucks gift certificate and you can find everything at:

I decided to buy the first 2 seasons of the TV show "Homeland" a try after hearing so much about it.
The problem with hype is it almost never lives up to it. Homeland was no exception. Lead actress Claire Danes acting style seems to involve being on the verge of tears in very scene. I also found the dialogue and situations the characters get into laughable at times. That's the fault of the writers. There were a few good episodes ("Q & A" in Season 2 was my favorite) but many of them reminded me of a daytime soap. I wanted a spy version of West Wing not Y & R. So on a scale of 1-10 I give it a blech.

Came across this wonderful illustration of why the "debate" over man-made climate change is incredibly misleading:

@ Markosaar

I saw that Sunday night. It was fantastic.

It's ridiculous that so many people without a scientific background can argue against it. Just because a few people won't listen to facts doesn't mean it needs debate.

There are 9/11 truthers out there. Does 9/11 deserve a debate?

May 13, 2014 @ 10:48 AM

A Sandy Hook truther was in the news recently for telling one of the dead girls' mothers that her daughter never existed. Apparently not much to be done for mental illness.

Yes these truthers and deniers choose to live in their fact free fantasy world and not much can change their point of view. A shame because as the saying goes no one is entitled to their own facts.

@Argie what happened Nigeria is sickening. I for one am onboard with some sort of rambo style search and destroy mission to eliminate the scum who did the kidnapping and anyone who supports them .

I am NOT kidding.

But there will always be people that either support what happened or shy away from confrontation who would not allow that to happen or be appalled if it did.

Those seem to be the people in charge.

If this seems harsh ,well it is. but IMHO at some point a line has to be drawn. Religion gets mixed into this sadly and nobody wants to offend anyones religion no matter how loony .

Re: Homeland

I'm a big fan of the show. I understand people who don't like Claire Danes' performance, it IS annoying, but it's also quite an accurate portrayal of someone who is suffering from bi-polar disorder. People with that disorder don't tend to do well under pressure. Now consider what she does for a living and you can understand why she always seems like she's on the brink of snapping.

I also realize that some of the scenarios can be a little difficult to believe, but I like to think that the world of espionage is an unbelievable one. It would HAVE to be, to explain some of the atrocities committed on the show.

Having said all of that, I'm not sure the show can be any good moving forward. I won't give anything away, but I just think that too much has happened to move it away from the original premise (which is what got me hooked on the show to begin with). I'll give it a chance when the next season airs, but I don't have too much hope for it.

saw a joke about tim hudak being a nigerian prince (email scam) who promises you one million new jobs
after you email him your deposit of 100,000 civil servant jobs.

that sad nigerian kidnapping story has more to it than you or I will ever know.

ln terms of theories and plots and truth about events just go on the assumption that we argue facts that are presented to us in a constantly shifting stream of information written by master manipulators.

Hey Argie
Basing my impressions of what happened in Nigeria on what Eric Margolis said in his recent essay at his website.

The stuff about media just seems like common sense...though cynical.

So how about those Habs. 4 to 0 shutout. A laugher. Anyway, one more game tomorrow which they will win. I was only wrong about game 5 and 6 when I thought the Habs would win game 5 and the Bruins game 6, but it was the other way around. Habs will win tomorrow though. Hopefully the Rangers win tonight. I hate the Pens. Then Habs beat Rangers in seven and Habs beat ings in seven and there's the cup and then it will be nothing but boring baseball. I only like playing baseball, not watching it. I would only go to a game if it meant that if I did not, I would not meet my trainer's kid. If it came to that, I would go to the game, but otherwise nobody sees me there.

The debate on whether to allow the sale of beer and in corner stores reminds me of the endless Sunday Shopping battles in the early 90s.

The group who were against Sunday shopping were so hysterical you would have thought our society might collapse just like MADD Canada, the Ontario Liberal and NDP parties are currently saying about private liquor sales.

Can you image a time when we COULDN'T shop on a Sunday?

Now we just take it for granted.

When we're able to buy a bottle of wine at the local Metro we'll also wonder why we didn't do this sooner.

BY the way Ontario will still be around when that happens.

@Al The Royal Pain

I didn't mind the character Carrie being bipolar. That's interesting. I had difficulty with the CIA continuing to employ her. There isn't an intelligence agency in the world who would employ someone that unstable no matter how talented she was and she is brilliant
The writers in my opinion could have kept it a secret a while longer. Maybe only allowing Saul and Brody in on her mental health.
I also know the 3rd Season bombshell you are referring to. I won't give it away either. The last episode in Season 2 was really good too. (Not many to choose from sadly) I didn't see it coming and loved the way they used the "memory card". So I'm curious where they go with Brody in Season 3.

@ EVERYBODY

Mike has only a couple of weeks left until his Ride For Cancer.

I want him to reach his Golden Goal of $5000.00.

Do it for Mike & in Mike Kic's Memory as he even donated during his Cancer treatments for this cause.

If you all are sick of me trying to promote this cause - TOO BAD as I am in remission for last 14 years & this means a lot to me.

Thanks

Planning on doing that 200+ KM Ride to Conquer Cancer next year.

Just doing the 75 KM Heart & Stroke Foundation one next month, but my ...heart... isn't really in it any more. Someone close to me was diagnosed with cancer recently so I'd rather raise funds for that cause.

I'm with you. I blame Rob Ford on Sunday Shopping!

If we allow beer to be sold anywhere, that'll probably lead to Rob Ford as Premier of Ontario or even worse...PM! Do we really want that?

I say NO to selling beer anywhere but The Beer Store. I don't know about you, but I love this country too much to risk it.

(the above comment was totally and completely 100% sarcasm)

May 14, 2014 @ 9:49 AM

Cheryl

Well, the Pens lost. Goody goody. I'm glad the Pens lost. Ranger and Habs in the next round. I was right about that. Habs will win the 25th cup this year. I'm not going to be wrong again. Why should there be beer and liquor in corner stores. That's not a good thing. There is the LCBO and beer store.

May 14, 2014 @ 11:13 AM

markosaar

@Cheryl,

The Beer Store is owned by foreign companies and controls which products show up on their shelves making it a tough barrier to entry for local breweries. As well the revenue leaves the country, which seems stupid for a state-sponsored monopoly.

The LCBO is a massive bureaucratic entity that also hinders local businesses. Two local breweries lately found it was less hassle for them to pay ten thousand dollars of listing fees to The Beer Store than to try to work with the LCBO. The LCBO also has all kinds of byzantine laws with respect to wine sales that make it harder than it should be for Ontario wineries to sell their products in their own home.

I don't see why it should be such a big deal to grab a bottle of wine with your groceries or grab a two-four from the corner store.

May 14, 2014 @ 11:38 AM

Argie

@mark
I agree it makes sense to do it but it wont happen. Its the same reason we will always have a 4 main school boards in ON - public sector unions. They would never let it happen.

May 14, 2014 @ 1:27 PM

markosaar

@Argie,

I realise the LCBO is public sector (is the Beer Store unionised?), but I don't think the unions at large give much of a shit about it as a matter of policy. Whenever privatising it or opening up liquor sales come up, it's the MADDs and puritans that cry foul.

But look at the straws The Beer Store has been grasping at with their ridiculous ads. They're afraid.

May 14, 2014 @ 2:45 PM

Somehow, they got hold of my number. Its probably Irvine getting back at me.

Rick C in Oakville

@Argie: LMAO, haven't heard Irv's name in along time. Hope he is doing well, always enjoyed his insight, but sometimes he pushed the boundaries I guess.
The only reservation I have to beer in the corner stores etc., is the experience I've had in Alberta and Newfoundland. Stores become more like a Mac's for beer etc. and selection to put it bluntly just sucks. Major fast selling brands, none of the fringe brewers, and pricing really is no different. only convenience is you can pick up a case at 1am to continue the party.

I'm happy the Habs won for the sake of my pool but I'm not looking forward to them reaching the finals. If that happens, I can see myself getting into a dust-up with the first annoying Habs' fans I see.

Why can't we be like English or Scottish soccer fans? A Rangers' fan wouldn't dare go anywhere near the Celtic part of Glasgow.

May 15, 2014 @ 9:27 AM

Cheryl

Of course I'm right. I'm going to be right from now on. Habs are winning the cup. They will beat the Rangers in seven games and then beat the Kings in seven. Lots of hockey left. I sure wish there was a summer league. Yes, Bob Seger really is the king. He's better than Elvis any day.
