Go Raptors! (I'll join in with Derrick.)
I liked one of team management's comments that you wouldn't know they're in the playoffs in Brooklyn, you can't tell if it's a playoff game or the second game of the season. Nice. And clean.

It was nice to walk my dog, Buster (older miniature poodle) and my sons' dog, Charlie (almost 3 year old standard poodle), who lives at their mom's, in the sun this morning down by the lake. Only, as Mike has posted, those damned bugs! There were swarms everywhere. Even at walking pace, I was not going to open my mouth. Fortunately, I managed to get both dogs to "shake" before we went back in the house. Bring on the hot weather, so that those irritants die/go dormant until the fall.

Augh! My youngest son turns 16 on Sunday. Where has the time gone?

Those damn bugs are really bad on my street. I've never experienced anything like it. It could be 20 degrees today, and I won't bike without a balaclava.

They're called midges and they last 2-3 weeks. More in the comments here:

May 2, 2014 @ 9:38 AM

@this guest
The glee of your post is most unbecoming.

May 2, 2014 @ 9:40 AM

Ryan G

I've had similar issues with those damn midges.

They're quite annoying and it seems like they're everywhere now - maybe it's the time of year. There were even some in Tim Horton's yesterday and I'm surprised store management didn't do anything about it. Then when I was taking a bike ride by the Beach there was this particularly terrible bunch of them almost blocking the path, forcing you to physically swat them out of your way. Fortunately they're quite small.

I find that ever since Peter Dinklage got that role in Game of Thrones, midges have this brutal sense of entitlement. Fuck 'em I say. Fuck 'em.

May 2, 2014 @ 9:45 AM

@Mike - a name with an expletive is more appropriate for the midges. I still say their only role on this earth is to be part of the food chain. Fortunately, starlings love them, and we have plenty of them out this way. My first encounter with the midges was my first spring in Ajax, which was 2003. This is by far the worst spring yet for these (expletive of your choice here) bugs.

Breaking news... Ontario is heading to the polls.

May 2, 2014 @ 10:10 AM

I got several fucking midges in my mouth biking to work. So gross.

People keep saying they only last a few weeks, but I feel like most summers I'm battling swarming insects throughout.

May 2, 2014 @ 10:18 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Several? That's nothing.

My first ride during this midge period resulted in dozens and dozens in my mouth, my nose and my eyeball... a few in my ears, too.

Every ride since then along the waterfront trail I've worn a balaclava and sunglasses. This has helped, but a few still find their way into my eyeballs and mouth.

When I get home, I literally have to pick the buggers out of my eye, hair, etc.

I'll report back when these guys are gone. It's my first spring living by the lake, so I haven't experienced this before.

May 2, 2014 @ 10:22 AM

Mike & Mark,
Here's a crazy idea: Don't ride until these pests are gone.

May 2, 2014 @ 10:25 AM

I always wear sunglasses except when it's cold enough for them to fog. One still managed to get behind the lens today. And yes, I was covered head to toe in them.

Last year I hit a swarm at Queen & Strachan.

I've made a point of always wearing sunglasses while cycling since they saved me from bird shit in my eye once.

May 2, 2014 @ 10:29 AM

We both have rides coming up we need to be fitter for.

I mostly ride to commute anyway. The pests are more tolerable than the street car, and people on it.

May 2, 2014 @ 10:30 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Stop making so much sense! It throws me off...

They're annoying, but harmless. I'm not going to park my bike for 2-3 weeks just because a few little flies get in my eyes and mouth.

Besides... I'm in training!

May 2, 2014 @ 10:40 AM

Gray Vetrain

The people of Ontario within the next 9 weeks will have the power to put Kenny Wynne and the Lieberils where they belong,Unemployed.

May 2, 2014 @ 10:41 AM

Best result for the upcoming Ontario election (in my opinion) is a minority PC gov't.

None of these leaders or parties inspire me. Liberals have proven to be poor managers of the finances, NDP will tax and spend to death, and I just don't trust Hudak.

May 2, 2014 @ 10:50 AM

How about those Habs? They won game one and PK Subban scores twice. Well, it's not over yet. It's going to go seven games. Here it is. The Bruins will win tomorrow, tie the series up. Then Habs win Tuesday, Bruins win Thursday, Habs win next Saturday, then Bruins win and then Habs win it in seven. Trust me. That's how it will go. It's not going to be a sweep or anything. Rangers are going to beat Pittsburgh as well probably in seven. Rangers play Habs in the next round.

I don't know who to vote for. I don't really like Winn, or Hudak. I am definitely not voting NDP. I'll go spoil my ballot.

May 2, 2014 @ 10:51 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Tim Hudak inspires nobody. He reminds me of John Tory in that way. If the PCs win, it's not because of Hudak it's in spite of him.

I predict a Liberal minority... we'll see.

May 2, 2014 @ 10:59 AM

@ Gray

Yes, calling a lesbian by a man's name is very helpful. Way to make a point!

@ Mike

A Liberal minority is probably the result of all of this. Andrea can't really hang too much on the Liberals since it was a very NDP budget and Hudak has made too many mistakes that alienate the voting public.

I don't want to see a PC win. They will cut and cut and cut to the detriment to most of the people that post here. The NDP, I believe, will make some very bad policy decisions like public power. And I think Hudak will make poor choices as well.
Having said that, I also don’t want to see an Ontario Pension Plan.

But if Kathleen wins, and it’s quite possible, Hudak is done and we can finally stop hearing about her being unelected.

May 2, 2014 @ 11:19 AM

This election was the PC's to lose and I think Hudak has already blown it. He's awful. Wynne's best trait is that she's milquetoast.

May 2, 2014 @ 11:28 AM

See I don't want a Liberal minority b/c the NDP becomes the natural 2nd party for them to work together, and if the last couple of years has proven anything it's that it doesn't work - the deficit has grown and services have not necessarily improved.

I see the PC minority gov't as the better option because they would have to work with the Liberals and I can't see them slashing and burning everything, but are more responsible in the finances than the current regime.

May 2, 2014 @ 11:32 AM

Oh, and go Raptors!

May 2, 2014 @ 11:32 AM

"Tim Hudak inspires nobody. He reminds me of John Tory in that way. If the PCs win, it's not because of Hudak it's in spite of him."

I couldn't agree more but he's the best of a bad lot.

May 2, 2014 @ 11:38 AM

@ Derrick

I don't see Hudak as someone who would ever work with another party. He would keep pushing until he got his majority which the people of Ontario would never do.

I think the worst case for this will be a NDP win. Hudak wanted this election and he may not want what he wished for.

And of course, Go Raptors!

May 2, 2014 @ 11:39 AM

Hudak and his wife wrote Mike Harris's Common Sense Revolution
at their kitchen table. And if you think that was a good thing then
I've got some graves in Walkerton to show you.

May 2, 2014 @ 12:20 PM

James Edgar

Mike and all the bike riders a bit of advice for midge season. Spray lemon pledge on your helmets and other plastic /metal parts and the midges should be much easier to clean off.

Anyone who rides a motorcycle eats bugs. Even when wearing a full face helmet. And has to deal with layers of dead bugs on Bikes and gear , I lemon pledge my helmets and my bike all the time and it helps get rid of their mushed carcasses.

As for the election... I have nothing I don't like anyone running. And trust even fewer.

May 2, 2014 @ 12:21 PM

4x4 Time

I agree that Hudak portrays about as much leadership confidence as Dion Phanuef does, but we need change in Ontario. The Liberals have committed what can almost be argued a crime with the massive amounts of wasted taxpayer dollars on scandals, OPP Investigations (ongoing) and spiraling provincial debt.

The province needs to get spending under control and it is time to give someone else a shot at it for the next four years. Not sure it could get any worse with a PC minority.

May 2, 2014 @ 12:24 PM

I agree with McNulty. PC's cut and cut often hurt the people who ironically support them the loudest. People take heed of what McNulty has said above.

May 2, 2014 @ 12:55 PM

I live in Hudak's riding... he'll be in tough out here as the NDP won the by-election for the federal seat. I'm not sure what's going to happen - It'll be a minority government for sure, but will it be NDP or PC lead?

On another note... it's my birthday and I'm not golfing :( however, it's my first weekend off since February.

Have a great weekend everyone!

So I was reading an article in the National Post yesterday about another idiot celebrity who's against vaccines.

Alicia Silverstone in her new book says "while there has not been a conclusive study of the negative effects of a one size fits all, shoot 'em up schedule, there is increasing anecdotal evidence from doctors who have gotten distressed phone calls from parents claiming their child was 'never the same" after receiving a vaccine and I personally have friends whose babies were drastically affected in this way".

The sad part is we actually listen to celebrities like her.

Here's the article from yesterday....

My eye tick is coming back.

May 2, 2014 @ 6:11 PM

One thing no one has mentioned with the whole Rob Ford saga... what about personal privacy? Don't get me wrong- I think Rob Ford is an incompetent mayor, racist, homophobic etc. and I'd never vote for him. But all that aside he was recorded without his knowledge and someone decided it was ok to make this public. And certain reporters also have made a lot of money from writing books about this.

I'm sure everyone has had a private conversation with friends where things were said that would be completely humiliating if they were made public. Why is it ok just because he's the mayor?

Same thing for the owner of the Clippers but I'll leave that one alone.

Blind Dave and anyone else who liked my Pete and Geets upload may be interested in the new one from The Live Earl Jive circa 1982. I have also added some additional content including a cleaned up almost two hour clip of David Pritchard on CHUM FM from 1975. The quality of my first upload of this this was quite poor. Old reel to reel tape is not easy to work with.
Also if you are or know any music triva fans can you let them know that I have a weekly audio contest. Thanks

I'm in my mid 50's & trying to listen to change on Q107 & was about to give it up after the different music mix. I never heard of the Black Keys until today - WOW with the song Little Black Submarine.

Give the Lesser - not Mighty Q 1 more chance.

May 2, 2014 @ 8:34 PM

Last November, the mayor’s brother, Doug Ford, compared his fellow councillors asking his brother about his drug use with the passion of Christ, saying what was been done to the mayor was “kind of like what was done to Jesus.”

May 2, 2014 @ 8:57 PM

@dale Are you being sarcastic? I hope so, otherwise, you are pathetic.
I am embarrassed by you and for you. You do not represent my/your generation.

The Black Keys have been around for 15 years, Auerbach is a prominent producer.
I am not particularly a Black Keys fan, but certainly, I am familiar.

Honestly, I feel sorry for you, and am disappointed that I'm pinned to your musical opinions by default/age.

May 3, 2014 @ 12:54 AM

Jason from Sudbury

In fairness to Dale, I'm 31 and I didn't know The Black Keys have been around for 15 years either. First time I heard of them was when Tighten Up started playing on the radio. Good band though.

As for Q107, meh, still not digging it really. Who knows. Maybe they'll eventually go back to the pure rock/hard rock format. Until then it's no different than Rock95 in Barrie really.

May 3, 2014 @ 7:53 AM

Well, game at 12:30. Anyway, all the games are going to be close. Habs will win in seven, but the Bruins are going to win today to even the series. They'll win 4 to 3. Then Habs win Tuesday. That's the way it will go. Lots of hockey so it will still be a while before the only sport around will be boring baseball. I like playing baseball, playing catch with my ball and glove with my trainer is fun.

Oh, Bob Seger's birthday is on Tuesday so Tuesday is when you should listen to some Bob Seger. He's great. His voice is so wonderful. I never heard of the Black Keys, whoever they are. It's Bob Seger's birthday. Bob Seger will live forever and ever. His voice is so beautiful.

I see the Ontario Liberal government is allowing Ontario wine to be sold at farmers markets starting today.

Why am I responsible enough to buy wine at a farmers market but not at a grocery store?

There's already an Ontario wine exception.

They sell Ontario wine at my local Loblaws, and at Wine Racks, etc.

We're playing our first wedding today. Should be interesting. Never considered us a wedding-type band, but I suppose if the wedding singer was doing 80s music in the 90s and 00s, us doing 90s-00s music now makes sense. Man I feel old sometimes.

May 3, 2014 @ 11:55 AM

My local Real Canadian Superstore also has a wine store within the building but I have to pay TWICE. Why can't I put a bottle of wine in my cart while I shop? Or a local micobrew for that matter.

It's a stupid system. No one can defend this in 2014.

May 3, 2014 @ 5:23 PM

right off the top of my head (and I admit I'm not in a drunken stupor so this
might be faulty logic)

I'd guess three things keep Ontario different from Michigan in terms of booze sales:

1. Tax revenue/ profit for the Province
2. Orange Order (past Ontario morality 'laws')
3. Family Compact 'religious' tradition somehow, for some reason, still kicking

May 3, 2014 @ 8:36 PM

A broken heart is blind & so are you.

@ This Guest - thanks for your comment.

May 3, 2014 @ 8:44 PM

@Toronto Mike,

Wine Rack sells very specific Ontario wines, mostly shitty, and hardly represents the province's wineries as a whole.

Wow those retarded scare-mongering commercials are working on you.

May 3, 2014 @ 8:54 PM

Well, Bruins won, but the last goal was an empty net goal 5 to 3. Anyway, my Habs will win on Tuesday, then Bruins on Thursday, Habs Saturday, Bruins Monday and Habs win the series on May 14. Then Habs play Rangers in the next round. That's how it will be and I am going to be right. Anyway, I don't know who the Black Keys are. I don't like modern rock. Bob Seger is the best. He should be the king. Only a couple more days until his birthday on May 6. Bob Seger really has such a wonderful voice.

May 3, 2014 @ 9:43 PM

@ Glen

You have to pay twice? Twice?

My god, the pain it must cause you.

I don't find that it's too hard to go to the LCBO for wine. I really don't see the issue.

Sooo...The winner is Brandon Morrow. He goes on the disabled list before Karen Stinz drops out the Toronto's mayor race.

May 4, 2014 @ 6:04 AM

The Beer Store should really look at who has designed the LCBO's and maybe hire the same people. The shopping experience at the Beer Store is awful. Even the newer stores are bad.

May 4, 2014 @ 7:12 AM

Well, why sell beer and liquor at other stores. Just keep them at the beer store or LCBO. Why not. Well, so Brandon Morrow is on the DL, but who cares. He's a baseball player. I think the time is coming soon when I can play baseball with my trainer again. That would be good. I like playing baseball, but hate listening to it so that's why I want hockey to last as long as possible. I love the Habs, but I don't want another sweep. If going to the baseball game gives me a chance to meet my trainer's kid, then I would go. I was almost going to meet his kid, but chickened out of the race because it was so cold out there and then he said he wouldn't bring his wife and kid. Well, if I have to go to a Jays game in order to meet the kid, then I would go even if I'm bored out of my mind, but then I would hope I could find a way to sleep through three or four hours.

Sitting in the 'Teens room' at Etobicoke's Brentwood Library this Sunday afternoon for internet access (didn't choose the machine sign-up). Feeling like a creep.

May 4, 2014 @ 3:21 PM

In last week's forum I mentioned a goofy job form question. It was from Cineplex headquarters, BTW.

Yesterday I checked the Government's Canada Jobs listings.
Bookkeeping clerk (Entry Level) Etobicoke.
Salary stated as the following. Yearly: min. $21,000 max. $23,000 for 40.0 hours per week.
Specific Skills:
Maintain general ledgers and fin. statements; Post j-e; Prepare t.b. of books; Reconcile accounts; Calc and prepare cheques for payroll; Other statistical, fin. and accounting reports.
Security and Safety:
Bondable; Basic security clearance.
Who's hiring at $11 an hour (maybe only $10.50 /hr) for a job skill position also involving payroll and a bondable security clearance?

Actually, I had started out at $21,000 a year - a quarter century ago. 37 hours a week, 3 weeks 'vacation', unpaid overtime during year-end reporting; no payroll or clearance though. At about six months I received an unscheduled $1,500 increase and demanded it be doubled. (Talked and discovered newer co-workers were being started at approx. $25,000.) Got that and the next raise at year's end. Squandered those riches upon fruitless bell-curved night school. Eventually got obsoleted by '486' computer power.

However, I started by saying I didn't really care either way. If it means bread and my beer in the same place...hey why not.

May 4, 2014 @ 9:59 PM

But really...

"Wow those retarded scare-mongering commercials are working on you" comment certainly didn't warrant such pomp...especially when I start by saying I don't care either way. Make sure to read the whole comment before you get all holier than thou...

May 4, 2014 @ 10:03 PM

I am fascinated by how many companies forget that the easiest way to get (and keep) a customer is to make the actual shopping experience easy. What a concept.
I have twice this week phoned a local company that I want to do business with. I have been shunted into voice mail both times, and so far they haven't phoned me back.
Yet because I visited their website, I am now inundated with their ads, appearing on other websites.
Here's a thought: take the money you are spending on those ads and use it to hire someone who actually returns phone calls!

May 4, 2014 @ 10:15 PM
