@Lyle Langley

I found some of Kinsella's reasons to be very puzzling. His attempt to paint Chow as an "outsider" is laughable. Toronto City council has been dysfunctional since well before Rob Ford, well before David Miller, well before Mel Lastman. Apart from Rob Ford's personal scandals, City Hall has bumbled along pretty much as effectively as it ever has (meaning not very well), so I'm not sure what exactly he's referring to when he mentions "City Hall’s serial disasters of the past four years".
As for his claim that "For most of Toronto’s citizens, the city has become unliveable and unaffordable.", that may well be true, but what exactly is Chow going to do about that? Lower property taxes? Lower housing prices and rents? Reduce TTC fares?
As an aside, his fifth point where he credits Chow with working with "...Stephane Dion (bringing together progressives to defeat Stephen Harper)...", I genuinely do not know what he's talking about here. Can someone remind me when Dion defeated Harper in anything?

1. 'Carrying on the good fight' idea person Olivia Chow, a centrist, consensus builder has positive thoughts about how to make cities work, concerned with society's obligation to children.

2.'See You at Nuit Blanche With a Sparkler' David Soknacki has a good sense of humour and has been budget chief.

3. 'Blow Dry Our Hair and Have Samosas' Karen Stinz: Would be fun to discuss gardens and flute lessons with her at a party for ten minutes.

4.'Let Go Of The Rope and Trust Me' John Tory, milk-toast friend to tar-sands corporatists but pleasant in a 'Let's pretend we eat President Choice Shepherd's Pie' sort of way.

5. ''Heavy Breathing at the Esso Station' Rob Ford, lousy consensus builder, no vision or ideas about urban culture, drug addict, emotionally unstable, associates with hoodlums.

Final Result:
Chow 38%
Tory 32%
(Stinz drops out)
Solnaki 15%
Ford 14%

He is referring to an old report that they lived in Co-Op housing project where they got subsidies on their rent. That 24-year old story is the best the anti-Chow contingent can come up with.

She did nothing illegal, in fact, co-op buildings were designed to encourage a mix of income levels so that the apartments weren't filled with just low-income families.

I like Chow because she'll build consensus on council and move this city forward. After all, she was very successful at doing just that under Mel Lastman.

After 4 years of complete division and a mayor who literally pits downtown against the suburbs, it's time we all work together without bully tactics and Ford Nation bullshit.

Like I said earlier, her platform won't be "tax and spend". She won't govern from the far left.

March 13, 2014 @ 10:20 AM

Argie

Chow was on 1010 this morning. John Moore asked her about the story of them living in subsidized housing. She claims their rent wasn't subsidized. I guess we'll have to take her word for it......

Moore gave her a chance to really spell out her platform with several easy questions - but of course Chow couldn't or wouldn't articulate what it was. She said it "was too early". Whatever.

I want her to be interviewed by Oakley or Carroll. Those interviews would effectively destroy her hopes of becoming the mayor. The one with Moore sure didn't help her.

March 13, 2014 @ 10:32 AM

Speysidephil

Believe me Argie, She will be extremely careful about who gets to interview her. I don't think Oakley or Carroll will be on her list.
Agreed they would destroy her with basic questions about her record on council and federally.
In other words not much substance there.

Housing co-operative housing charges are administered
by co-op managers, bookkeepers & finance committees,
audited by professional accountants
answerable to provincial and federal program administrators:
1.subsidized rent
2.market value rent
3.market value + voluntary surcharge
4.fluctuating rent based on fluctuating income

Knowing Jack Layton & Olivia Chow's history
of community involvement
you can speculate there would also be
hundreds of hours of volunteer committee work
where they sought to create a sound, workable
yet humane, structure for their co-operative.

Interesting. So far in this little sample, chow and Tory are neck-in-neck among those who ID'd themselves as Toronto residents (not sure what to make of McNulty's status - can you vote or not?). Not one vote for Stintz, 2 for Socnacki, and only 1 for Ford. Even though this is obviously not scientific, it's actually already looking like how I think the voting will go.
By the way, anyone who responded but didn't indicate whether you're a toronto resident or not, you fail and should be banned from commenting again. Simple instructions people!

March 13, 2014 @ 11:16 AM

Philly-Bob

@ All - I think I've made it clear, I am not a fan of Chow, however..

I live in a co-op in Mississauga. There are people on my street who have subsidized rent, I am not one of them.

Here's how it works:

You pay the maximum listed price for the house (as I do) unless that number is GREATER than 25% of your take home pay. There are 19 of the 100 houses on my street that currently pay subsidized rent. (The board does not tell us who obviously, just the number of houses using the subsidy).

Do I pay less for my 2 bedroom town house that you would on another street, yes. However, we the residents of this street are responsible for all maintenance on our homes that do not require an licensed contractor, we take care of the maintenance of the common areas (so during the warm weather months, the residents mow the lawn of all common areas, including a play area about the size of a football field.). We do a missive streat clean up in the spring and fall (so get rid of all the leaves and clutter that built up over the winter and summer respectively).

This is how we keep our rent down, not by digging into other peoples pockets. Anyone living in a non co-op complex has to care for their own lawn (if that). All common areas will be handled by a landscaping company. The only thing we bring outside people in for is to plow in the winter.

If the Layton/Chow family lived in a co-op, it doesn't mean they were abusing subsidy.

@ Argie - You are so transparent man..."Who cares what Ford has done wrong, Layton went to a massage parlour." "Who cares what Ford has done, Miller wasted money while Ford has saved a billion dollars" (lack of proof notwithstanding)

Not for nothing man, but an alleged trip to a rub and tug doesn't compare to the things Ford has ADMITTED to doing, let alone all the stuff he still denies.

Oh, but wait I forgot, he's admitted to everything he did wrong, all this other stuff is made up by Blair to get Ford out of office...sorry I forgot about that.

March 13, 2014 @ 11:42 AM

Argie

@Phil
Relax man. I just thought it was odd that Chow went there - given the history of Jack. I'm sure her handlers didn't think it was wise move.

You've just illustrated the double standard that exists - not just with the media but with regular people. Anything goes with Ford but lets not talk about Jack's visit to a r&t parlor. God knows how many more he had where the police didn't show up.

March 13, 2014 @ 11:51 AM

Philly-Bob

@ Argie - You missed my point entirely. I don't think it's okay that Jack went to a r&t..

I just think our Mayor Smoking Crack, drinking a driving, verbally abusing citizens of his city, making racist and homophobic remarks, acting like a belligerent child in council (this is just the tip of the iceberg on what he's admitted to)

As well as , (allegedly) arraigning a prison beat down, having his buddy try and buy/threaten with violence to obtain the crack video....need I go on.

My point is, you disregard all of this because Ford ANECDOTALLY saved a billion dollars....no proof whatsoever.

March 13, 2014 @ 12:44 PM

Corey

@ this guest - actually Jack's ghost will be running. This might sound mean-spirited, callous, or cynical, but I'm of the opinion that we've beatified Layton largely because he died of cancer while he was still an active politician, and Olivia Chow directly (though not deliberately) benefits from that. I have absolutely no doubt that had Jack not passed away until he had retired from public life 20 years from now, there would be no state funeral, no statues, no public memorials of note. It would have received that same attention as you would expect for Ed Broadbent or Preston Manning's deaths. Instead, in our minds, he is now this sort of mythological character of peace and light who would have transformed Canada, and Olivia is the anointed one, charged with picking up the mantle to continue Jack's work.

across from the Shoppers Drug Mart
she looked (to me anyway) shattered
but doing her best to be upbeat.
As I thought about it
I realized it was concern
for his health,
as well as no doubt personal embarrassment
even though there was
no illegality
and maybe not even
the full fledged grime that Puritan
hypocrites love to imagine
cherish, and nurture

Ranked in order:

1. Rob Ford: Call me a lunatic, a "Ford Nation" idiot, but I don't care. We need a mayor who will watch every dollar and keep taxes low. That's what Ford brings to the table. Everything else with his private life doesn't affect me. How he does his job does, and I happen to think he's done a great job with some of his policies. The next steps: Contracting out garbage on the other side of Yonge street, completing the Sheppard subway, getting rid of the land transfer tax, and reducing the size and cost of government. FORD MORE YEARS.

2. John Tory: I don't happen to like him very much, but he's the best of a bunch of bad option behind Ford. He likes to say he's conservative but he's really more centrist. He'll pander to the left and increase taxes. Hope he doesn't win.

3. David Soknacki: Don't know much about him except for a) he was budget chief during the disastrous Miller years and b) he wants to built LRT instead of subways. Bye bye David.

4. Karen Stintz: The TTC turncoat flip flops like no other. She destroyed Ford's subway plan only to resurrect a portion of it. I don't mind her politics but I don't trust her.

5. Olivia Chow: GOD HELP US ALL! RUN AWAY! RUN FAR AWAY!

@ Justin

I'll never get that Ford's personal life doesn't affect you line. It has affected the city. It has affected his ability to do his job and it has affected his credibility.

If he wins, the things you think he will do will never be done. Taxes have gone up. The land transfer cash cow has not been touched (promise broken) and the garbage would happen under Tory and Stintz.

If you honestly think that a city like Toronto can go on and continue to never raise taxes then you are crazy!

March 13, 2014 @ 1:13 PM

Philly-Bob

@ Justin - Same questions in in your direction now (maybe you'll give a straight answer instead of deflecting)

I just think our Mayor Smoking Crack, drinking a driving, verbally abusing citizens of his city, making racist and homophobic remarks, acting like a belligerent child in council (this is just the tip of the iceberg on what he's admitted to)

Philly-Bob

@ aRgie

Nope, any time someone is foolish enough to say they don't care what Rob Ford does,as long as he saves money (which he doesn't, I'm still waiting for proof that he does.

There is more to being Mayor than fiscal responsibility. The mayor is supposed to be an ambassador for their city, the face of the city to the world, if you will.

Here's Toronto's face right now:
unhealthy
sweaty
drug abusing
liar
"it's everyone's fault but mine"
petty
Bullying to get his way
Petulant Child (example: making drinking and driving faces at a fellow councillor, while hiding behind his big brother)

And no Argie, came up with that all by myself...

so please PROVE ME WRONG!!! DON'T DEFLECT, ANSWER THE FUCKING QUESTION - DOES HE OR DOES HE NOT DO ALL THESE THINGS? AND SINCE WE ALL KNOW HE DOES PLEASE EXPLAIN WHAT ABOUT HIM MAKES A GOOD MAYOR...

I've acknowledged Ford's personal failings many times on this blog. I obviously don't deny them - I was simply noting the irony of Chow using the term "role model" despite the fact that her husband was accused of something not so nice.

I think I'm being fairly clear here. There's no need for you to go off the handle and accuse me of everything from thumping bibles, bashing gays or being a troll. You need to relax and take a break from this.

@ Argie - Completely relaxed...it would take more than you to change that my friend....

What I am is sick of you making statements that are intended to illicit a reaction, then back peddling and saying "I never said anything of the sort"

I have better things to do with my time then go back into the Open Mike's to find an example, but you have on many occasions said things to the effect of "I don't care about his personal life so long as he saves money" (that was your mantra before he admitted to smoking crack)

Again, does he save money?....anecdotal at best..

Is he an embarrassment to this city? Without a doubt!

Do you participate in Reductio ad absurdum on an almost daily basis? A resounding yes from everyone on here who is not a member of Ford Nation

Allow me the settle this...

Rob Ford is an idiot and those who still support him are foolish.

I just heard Olivia Chow on 640AM. My assessment of all fluff and no substance was more than reinforced. She answered nothing and either did not understand the questions or was sticking to a script. Really cannot understand why people support her.

You have a curious manner of debate Phil. One minute you're saying it doesn't matter if Ford saved the City money, because his behaviour nullifies it. The next minute, you're demanding "Ford supporters" prove their claims. Why do you want proof, if it doesn't matter to you anyway? Look, I haven't been following the Ford crap at all, except through the exchanges I see on this blog (I couldn't even make it through the whole Kimmel interview - it made me squirm too much), so I haven't exactly dug into the numbers, but if both the City's CFO and the city manager go on record verifying savings of ~$800-million, most people are going to accept that. In fact, given that, I would say the onus is on you to prove those numbers are false. Unless you're really going to say, "Liars! They say a billion dollars, when they only really saved $800 million!"? You should just stick to the fact that his behaviour makes him unfit to hold office of Mayor. And you should chill. And lay off the CAPS. It makes you seem like a crazy person.

I just want a city where the meter maids and transit ticket collectors don't earn over $100,000 per year.

Ford hires his cronies (like former coach David Price and that other guy now on charges).
Tory claims more than he delivers. Anyone could have lead the CFL soon after it ended its U.S. expansion experiment. Ditto for a gov't protected cable company - pre satelitte systems.
Soknacki or Stintz. Jeesh.
Chow. If she was on Mel Lastman's budget committee; then we can guess where CUPE's garbage workers obtained both high wages and a JOBS FOR LIFE clause.

I would raise taxes and cut services. Or rather, I would cut the frills like BIA managed street festivals. Instead of facepaints and balloons, give that coinage to the GTA children that literally go begging in public for refused serious medical coverage.
I would also re-open the public washrooms at Islington Station and reconfigure the Mississauga Bus departures away from a single street side entrance and start maximizing the bus bays for two-way passengers.
For another starter: I would also fire any police officer(s) who faked being a GO train flood victim last year.

I thought you said "idiot" was an offensive term. After all you deleted a post of mine because I used that word.

Between you and me I agree, Ford is an idiot.

The word "idiot" has never been banned on this site, is not banned on this site and never will be banned on this site.

I think everybody knows this.

@Phil, seriously, take break. The holier-than-thou group, oh sorry, religion is banned on this site, the I'm-better-than-you-crowd is out in force. Tolerance anyone?

@All that think Toronto is worse off or blighted because of Mayor Ford's antics, take a seriously long look in the mirror. What you are looking at is a lefty that has no grasp of the real world.

@This guest, I found you amusing, until you referenced that olivia chow will campaign on a platform to get funding for dental work for poor children. It shows that you have yet to graduate grade 8. If chow attempts to bring in anything approaching health care at a municipal level she will be laughed out of the city. I hope she does that.

@Mike, I will vote Tory, but would vote Ford again if Tory wasn't running. I live in Toronto

Olivia gained national recognition for her innovative approaches to programs for children and youth as Toronto’s first Children and Youth Advocate. In this capacity, she enhanced the far-reaching child nutrition programs (now feeding over 140,000), free dental care for children living in poverty, expanded pre- and post-natal services, and an award winning approach to delivering Early Learning and Child Care (First Duty) that uses local schools as hubs for all child-centered services.

@this guest,

Your grade 7 is showing. These are federal accomplishments, good ones too. This is not what a City Mayor does, I do not want my mayor working on federal issues. This is exactly why the city of Toronto is in the situation it is, David Miller and his bus full of clowns, et al, etc...

Healthy cities are cities that are prosperous, liveable and sustainable. They are cities with high quality culture, education, food, housing, health care, public transit, recreation, and built and natural environments.
Healthy cities don’t just happen. They result from creative vision, strategic decision-making and thoughtful implementation that respects the health needs and challenges of all residents. They happen by design – through intentional and thoughtful investment and provision of infrastructure, programs and services with health in mind.

Chow goes out of her way to make allies, even ones she's at ideological odds with. Jakobek, for example, boasts of helping Chow secure extra funds for children's and seniors' dental programs.

Fairly obvious, but I'm not in Toronto: I moved a number of years ago to the land of oil and money :)

Fortunately my family fled West from The "Centre of the Universe" due to the fact that old TO was listing so far to "the left" that it has to capsize sooner or later.

Chow will capitalize on her ethnicity, Jack's memory, her allegedly tough childhood, ban handguns and hug some babies.

Her battle cry will be "think of the children" because what kind of heartless barbarian doesn't think of the children ?

She'll campaign on an emotional level, never straying into the confusing world of actual facts.

The self destructive train wreck that is Rob Ford waxes infinitely more genuine that Ms. Chow and that will cost him.

The other candidates are who again ?

Torontonians will awaken on election day, slip into their skinny jeans, strap on their Birkenstocks sip their designer coffee and think of the children.

How could Saint Olivia fail ?

@Mac,

It'll be okay. Just as we've weathered Ford, we'll survive Chow.
