I went to bed after the first. That was a game I expected to lose, so I was pleasantly surprised when I woke up and saw we won.

The Leafs are playoff bound, and this season, we win a round!

No side of the political spectrum has a lock on intelligence. I like having a commenter that sits a bit above the fray and doesn't stoop to the typical insults and jabs the rest of us (yes, I'm including me) fall into.

Perhaps Corey
has hit upon
an insight concerning
the vertical form
of commenting
as an attempt
to not be pulled
by gravity, resist
stooping into
cynicism which every
intelligent person feels
in their shadow,
Perhaps the vertical

should be viewed
as springing from the

is the message

The missing Malaysian plane was #404 from Boeing which makes it 404: Not Found.

But seriously, the plane is somewhere... surely we can find it.

I wish I can take credit for this but I read it in a letter to the editor a couple of days ago. The writer makes a great point.

Pierre Carl Peladeau is running as a PQ candidate in the upcoming Quebec provincial election. His company, Videotron recently purchased spectrum licenses from the Canadian government. Videotron wants to eventually sell wireless plans to Canadians across Canada with these licenses like Telus, Rogers, etc. However if Quebec becomes an independent country his company would be a foreign carrier and wouldn't be able operate inside Canada. This also applies to his cable empire. CRTC regultions stipulate that foreign companies can only own 49% of a specialty channel. This means Pelandue would have to sell controlling interest.

Don't separatists like Peladeau think these things through?

I think I wrote here a long time ago that the Leafs wouldn't make the playoffs. I guess I was wrong, although if the injury to Bernier is significant, you never know. I can't take any team with a negative GF/GA ratio seriously - I'm sure there have been teams before that have gone deep into the playoffs with more goals against, but I bet it's few and far between. Without stellar goaltending, the Leafs wouldn't be anywhere near the playoffs. 30% of the Leaf games have gone into OT this season. Of their 36 wins so far, 13 of them were from OT. How many of those OT games went to a shootout? The vast majority of them. There are no shootouts in the Playoffs. So they can't hold a lead in regulation, and they they can't win in OT without a shootout. Another first round exit.

This might sound like a stupid question.

Is it possible for the investigators searching for that Malaysian airliner to use the GPS or other tracking apps on the passengers smartphones on that flight?

March 14, 2014 @ 11:05 AM

brocon

@Glen

We now know:

1. The plane sent signals to a satellite for four hours after the aircraft went missing early last Saturday

2. Planes can fly a great distance in four hours

I've heard nothing about using passengers' smartphone GPS but that must be considered.

Re: Malaysia Airlines flight MH370

Since the plane likely flew for 4 hours after contact was lost, it seems likely this was a highjacking.

The plane is somewhere in the Indian Ocean and they'll find it.

Not a single religion is a terrorist organization.

March 14, 2014 @ 11:26 AM

Corey

A smartphone needs to be connected to wifi or data service for it's location services to work. Neither of those would be available (or very accurate) on an international flight at 35,000 ft over an ocean.

March 14, 2014 @ 11:34 AM

Argie

@Mike
That's true. However, there are some religious leaders who sometimes condone, even applaud actions by terrorist organizations, no?

March 14, 2014 @ 11:34 AM

Philly-Bob

@ Mike - You don't get it....all Muslims are terrorists (right Argie). Forget that in every Muslim country we've entered, we have received assistance form the common people. Forget that there are Muslim groups all over the world who denounce Al-Qaeda and the like. Forget that there are Muslim scholars all over the world, explaining to anyone who will listen, that the views espoused by those terrorists groups fly in the face of what the Qur'an says.

All Muslim's ARE terrorists...right Argie?

Open Question to Smarter People than I:

The data on my phone doesn't work during flight. I've even forgot to put my phone on airplane mode and have seen the data start up pretty much when we land. In the air, the phone's data just won't work.

So my question is regarding 9/11... how were those passengers able to call loved ones from the phone before it crashed in Pennsylvania?

March 14, 2014 @ 11:39 AM

Philly-Bob

@ Argie -you've said it a hundred times....look in the mirror for a picture of an idiot.

@Argie

I could have sworn the report said they used their cell phones... I could be wrong. Regardless, cell phones won't work at that altitude!

Re: that "idiot" comment I deleted a couple of weeks ago

I told my friend Elvis why I deleted that comment, and he agreed it was the right call. I also told my wife who thinks I did the right thing.

The comment was deleted because I didn't think it was fair to the guest author, not because a banned word was used. I don't ban content, just context.

March 14, 2014 @ 11:48 AM

Speysidephil

@Mike
I am far from being a techie, but from what I have learned on CNN you have to be in proximity to a communications tower for the phone to operate.
Pennsylvania obviously would be in range, 35000 feet over the Atlantic or Indian Ocean not so much.
Any one else with an explanation?

March 14, 2014 @ 11:49 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Speysidephil

Ok, that might explain it... most of my flights the past few years have been over the Atlantic Ocean... but even as we approach Pearson my data is blocked until just before we land.

It's like we need to be under X metres in altitude before the data returns...

March 14, 2014 @ 11:51 AM

Argie

@Mike
Hey if elvis and your wife agree with you then I'm good with it!

I just wanted an excuse to use the word. Phil gave it to me.

March 14, 2014 @ 11:52 AM

Corey

@Mike -

Only 2 of the calls were made from passenger cellphones. The rest were from those airplane seatback phones. I understand that in heavily populated area (like around Pearson) there's too much interference to pick up a reliable signal. Rural cell transmitters are also more powerful than city -based ones, so flying at low altitude in rural Pennsylvania it could have been possible to make a brief call.

I was just on The Onion to read a funny article about how they have started to search other space time continuums for the missing plane. It turns out, just like The Sun, The Star and the National Post, the Onion is now a pay site. What the hell? It’s not even real news and they want you to pay a subscription? I won’t pay for it just like I won’t pay for the other newspaper sites. I understand these places need other revenue tools but I wonder if it’s the best business plan.

And to the complaints about Mike’s choices to remove posts at his discretion….it’s his site. It’s his call. Don’t like it, start your own blog. I am pretty sure he’ll refund your money spent on the subscription.

And don’t bother with free speech. Unless Mike had you arrested for the comment then your rights have not been violated.

March 14, 2014 @ 12:21 PM

Argie

"And don’t bother with free speech. Unless Mike had you arrested for the comment then your rights have not been violated."

I agree but there have been several cases in the UK where someone has tweeted or blogged an offensive word and the police have shown up and arrested the "offender". They have also confiscated their computer(s) and effectively destroyed their reputation. Let's hope that nonsense doesn't come here.

March 14, 2014 @ 12:31 PM

McNulty

Yes, Argie. That happenned there but it's not close to what Mike is doing. You're stretching by bringing that up.

March 14, 2014 @ 12:37 PM

@McNulty

"...it's his site. It's his call."
Don't think anyone has ever stated otherwise. I know I've prefaced my remarks on censorship with similar words.

"...don't bother with free speech."
Again, I haven't seen anyone go there before.

I laid out reasons why I thought censoring comments was a bad idea a couple Open Mike's ago. I don't feel like re-hashing it again, and it's apparently a non-issue for most anyway.

March 14, 2014 @ 12:51 PM

I'm not sure what the big deal is. Anyone familiar with the internet knows that comments deemed inappropriate by moderators (in this case Mike) get deleted all the time. Forum threads get locked, messages are removed, whatever. Why are we still talking about this? It's Mike's site. This isn't censorship, it's Mike doing what he deems appropriate with HIS site.

I know you've prefaced your comments with it, but then take it up with Mike offline. It's like saying, "No offense but.." and then saying something offensive. It doesn't condone the offensive remark.

But bringing it up and then bringing it up again I don't think serves any purpose but to whine about a comment that was removed.

But really...not my place. I will move on. It's not TorontoMcNulty.com....or really Toronto/KitchenerAndrew.com but that's not my point. My blog has been dead a year (for legal reasons that I won't get into).

Lorne

Re: Airplanes and cell phones.

First, in regards to the 9/11 flights. All the planes were low to the ground, and near urban centres (since that was their target). Everyone was close enough to cell towers to use their phones.

Second, in regards to the GPS/etc on cell phones: Over the ocean, there'd be no cell service, etc. GPS tracking wouldn't work for several reasons, assuming the plane went down in the ocean.

1) Go drop your phone in a bucket of water. Does it still work? Then why would it work hundreds of feet under the ocean. (Note: don't do this)

2) Let's say it was a rugged phone that could survive being submersed. It's not hundreds of feet underwater. No cell phone is going to be powerful enough to transmit a beacon that far through that much salt water.

3) GPS on its own is a no-go, because GPS is a "passive" sensor. It receives a GPS signal. It doesn't transmit one.

I complain more about the cold. Sure, I like to skate in the winter, but this is too cold for me and the rinks are closed anyway, well, mine is. I am sick and tired of this winter. I have to let my trainer know by tomorrow afternoon if I am going to the race. Hell, -15 on Sunday. Unless they change the forecast, there is no way I'm going in that.

Anyway, my trainer lost his last curling game so they're done for the year, but next season, my trainer is only going to be in a couple spiels and then major league on Tuesday.

My Habs better start winning soon. My Coyotes lost last night. 'Too bad the Leafs won. I am going to hide in a hole if the Leafs win the cup.

Well, as for the heat, it's hard to work out outside if it's so hot, but if I don't have to work out, it's okay. I'll take the heat over the cold and snow any day.

If anyone here is remotely a Toronto basketball fan, you need to check out the Raptors' Open Gym series.

I found it way better than the 24/7 they did on the Leafs & Red Wings. Way more behind-the-scenes footage and way WAY more personalities shining through with this collection of Raptors players.

The Raptors had lost my interest in the last few years, but this season they've won me back...and after watching Open Gym, I'm all-in with this team. I can't wait for the play-offs.

It's going to be -15 for a low and -7 for a high on Sunday. So they say anyway. It's warm today, but it won't be on Sunday unless they change the forecast and they're not yet. Chances are I'm probably going to chicken out at the last minute. They should have this thing in May or June when the weather is more predictable. Oh well, by the way things are going, there could be snow in May. I never heard of it before, but it could happen with the way this year is going.

It's too late to change my mind now. My trainer had to know by yesterday. If it was just a walk, no waiting around or anything, I probably would have just gone, but it is waiting around probably for an hour or so. If I don't get to meet my trainer's kid for several months, then I would probably regret it, but I can't change my mind now. My Habs had a nice comeback win. They were losing 4 to 1, but won 5 to 4 in overtime just like that and my Coyotes won as well 3 to 2. I couldn't ask for anything more. Let's hope my Suns and Habs win today.

March 16, 2014 @ 8:35 AM

How about those Habs. Yes, they won last night and so did my Suns beat the Raptors. It's all good. Anyway, maybe Corey is right. I should have gone. I don't know when I'll meet Carter, my trainer's kid now. Anyway, more cold weather on the way. I do complain about the heat, but only if I have to do a lot of walking in it or work out in it.
