Hey Mike -

Two questions -

1) What brand and model of mic's do you use for your podcast?

2) What are the chances of you getting John Moore on you pod?

February 25, 2014 @ 9:12 AM

Nigel Trousershrapnel

Two things
Grocery chains that redo their stores. Change the layout of the and you can never find anything. There is a Sobey's in the neighbourhood that since it's redesign, is so dark that you can't see the produce well enough to judge it's condition.

The incredible shrinking packaging. Most evident in potato chips, cereal and other snack foods. Instead of raising their prices, producers reduce the size of the serving at the same price.

Drives me nuts

RØDE Procaster microphones with a Mackie ProFX8 mixer.

I listen to so little AM radio outside of some Fan 590 I honestly don't know John Moore. In fact, the only 1010 personality I know is Jim Richards, because I knew him (and really liked him) before he moved to 1010.

So I might be able to get John Moore on the podcast, but I'm not sure I want to.

@Nigel Trousershrapnel

When I helped convert a Food City into a Pricechopper back in '96 the produce was EVERYTHING. It had to be the first thing someone saw when they walked into a store and extremely well lit and colourful.

A consultant actually came in to give a speech about why the produce section was the flame for the moths and presented all this research to support it.

Thus far, no legitimate challenger for Ford. Looks like another 4 years of Ford.

Sadly, the same can be said about Wynne. I don't see anyone defeating her.

I have one good friend who both lives in Toronto and is a member of Ford Nation. He's the only one, actually. He's on my hockey team and has been on my podcast. He's Mike Muzzin.

Mike Muzzin will be voting for John Tory in October. When I heard that, I realized that he's definitely a legitimate challenger.

You might not like Tory or deem him a winner, but he'll get votes from Ford Nationers who are tired of the crazy antics and constant lies.

February 25, 2014 @ 9:27 AM

I agree it will be close but somehow Tory will lose it. Right now its "fashionable" for conservatives to say they'll vote for Tory but come election night, many of those people will have their reservations about him.

February 25, 2014 @ 9:32 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

And, of course, we need to see if Olivia Chow enters the race.

Not that Chow would take a single vote from the "conservatives", but she'll get everyone else plus those who test drove Ford in 2010 because they weren't happy with the alternative candidates.

February 25, 2014 @ 9:34 AM

Tory is a legitimate challenger. I think he went into this race with some knowledge we don't have. No way he risks losing big to Chow.

Something is up. But Tory is the candidate I'd vote for right now. He's rich and out of touch a bit but he's not Ford crazy and not way too far left.

February 25, 2014 @ 9:45 AM

I think Chow is an instant win. All the other candidates would have to unite to beat her and Ford is too stubborn to.

February 25, 2014 @ 9:48 AM

Nigel Trousershrapnel

If Chow enters the race she should win. Ford and Tory will split the conservative vote and Chow, with little effort, will take the rest of the votes. Federal Liberals benefited from the Conservative/Reform split during the 1990's and the Harper Conservatives did the same with the split on the left.
no brainer.

Anyone who reads this blog knows I'm not a big John Tory fan, but knocking him for being rich is asinine. Rob Ford and Doug Ford are rich. Rob Ford's new Escalade starts at $86,145.

John Tory is rich because he was successful. I don't know why the Ford's throw this in his face as a negative.

I get $100 from Mike Muzzin if Olivia Chow wins, and a shitload of lasagna from Il Duce.

I was at the eaton centre's food court and was looking for a refreshing cold drink.

I found one, and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that a relatively small sized food court beverage nowadays will only cost me $7.80. It was a gelato shake.

If I had known that was going to be the price tag, I would have just gone for a fucking Keiths at Mr Fucking GreenJeans.

On an unrelated note - Mike, if not already, you should also consider inviting Adam, the PD of Indie 88, onto your 'cast. I know Alan Cross was on but Adam's obviously a little closer to the station.

Aside from the feedback i provide on their surveys, I emailed Adam recently with some direct comments on their eye-gouging level of repetition, and lack of variation on older music.

To his credit, he wrote me back. I did get a bit of a form-letter response (understandable considering how many emails he probably gets) but he managed to include a few nuggets to make me feel like he actually read what I wrote.

So far, Bookie's Sunday night show is my favourite, where he gets to expand the playlist a little. The request show is a misnomer - i find it hard to believe the requests coming in are for the same 10 songs they play all day.

Great idea. I'll write Adam now and invite him on.

Almost all politicians come from money. I wouldn't hold it against them because of it. Even St. Jack Layton came from money.

February 25, 2014 @ 9:57 AM

On the topic of Indie88... what does everyone think?

I think it's fair... Bookie is great.. the morning show is weak... very weak. And I'm not a big fan of the engaging questions for each show like...'Canada won gold in hockey, what medal would you win gold if you could make your own Olympics?'

February 25, 2014 @ 9:58 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I listen to 88.1 a fair bit. I'd deem it the best game in town. In other words, it's better than 102.1, and there is really no third option for someone looking for that genre.

Is it the ideal we enjoyed during the soft launch? Hell no, but it's got to make money to survive...

I just wrote Adam Thompson and invited him on Toronto Mike'd. I'll let you know what he says.

February 25, 2014 @ 10:00 AM

I have a confession to make. I'm sick. I'm a masochist. I read Heather Mallick's column in the Star regularly. I tell people I read the Star, and the Post and the Globe etc., because I like to expose myself to differing points of view and try to understand all sides of issues, but really I read Mallick because I enjoy tormenting myself. I'm constantly amazed that a national newspaper will continue to employ someone that is so consistently terrible, someone that so obviously scrambles every time to hit her deadlines that her columns are less than half-baked.
A lot of people don't care. They'll say, why read her if you don't like her? That's missing the point. It's not necessarily that I don't like her opinions, it's that I'm honestly dumbfounded that she has a job. I have to keep reading to see just how bad someone can be at their profession and still remain employed. For anyone who thinks I'm exaggerating, or over-reacting, I issue this challenge. Read yesterday's column. Then tell me, what was the conclusion of the piece? What was the connection to Toronto's lack of participation in an anti-Ford sit-in and Finland? Do you feel enlightened, educated or entertained by it? Why did this person get paid real money for writing it? Does it not diminish your view of The Star in general for running stuff like this?

February 25, 2014 @ 10:00 AM

Bottom Feder

Heaven forbid a politician be successful in the private sector becoming... gasp... wealthy.

February 25, 2014 @ 10:01 AM

You read Mallick's column for the same reason I sign into Facebook - they're both train wrecks.

At least Mallick shows us examples of the mentally unstable people who devote their life to rid the city of a pretty good mayor. I thank her for that.

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Ok, I'll bite. Give me some evidence that he's "a pretty good mayor". I actually live in this city and I don't see it...

February 25, 2014 @ 10:17 AM

Lyle Lanley

Another polar vortex? Will this ever end?

February 25, 2014 @ 10:20 AM

I alternate between 88.1 and CBC radio 2 in the morning and on the drive home. I try 102.1 occasionally but the music kills it for me. They're still on same play list from 2 years ago. In comparison I agree that 88.1 is the best game in town at the moment

However 88.1's morning team has to improve. I am not a fan of the "morning zoo" school of broadcasting...

February 25, 2014 @ 10:25 AM

I like Royson James in the Star. He nails it.

February 25, 2014 @ 10:26 AM

1) He eliminated the vehicle reg tax
2) Froze property taxes (that never happens anywhere else)
3) Contracted out half of the city's garbage pickup
4) Never gave into lobbyist and activists' demands (my personal favorite)
5) Worded for and secured a subway extension for Scarborough (over 600,000 people)

I'm sure I'm missing a few others.

It may not seem like much to you, but compared to any other leader, its a lot.

February 25, 2014 @ 10:29 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Except our property taxes are going up (because there are no services to cut), Etobicoke's garbage pickup was already privatized by Doug Holyday and many deem his Scarbourough extension "bad math".

Soknacki says, based on an estimate of $400-million per kilometre, building subways on current Scarborough Rapid Transit line, on Sheppard Avenue and on Finch Avenue West would push the debt to $7 billion by 2022-23.

So really, in three years you think he's great because he eliminated the vehicle registration tax. It's really a rarity: a promise he didn't break. And it's not nearly enough.

February 25, 2014 @ 10:34 AM

I had a bad feeling a major terrorist attack was going to occur during Sochi Winter Games. That region in Russia is a breeding ground for terrorism and the bombings before the games made me very nervous.

@ Toronto Mike: It's Argie trolling again and you bought it hook line and sinker. He's an embarassment through and through. His interview with Matt Lauer shows how fake his sorry is for all the shit he lied about.

The best line “We’ve all made mistakes, Matt,” Mr. Ford responded then. “I’m not perfect. Maybe you are, maybe other people are. I’ve made mistakes, I’ve admitted to my mistakes.”

It's too bad he didn't add in the real truth. That he only admits to his mistakes when evidence arises that shows he's previously been lying. Until that point in time he will attack everyone else's integrity.

What's amazing is he's like a child when it comes to apologies. He thinks the minute he says sorry all should be forgiven and he should get his toys back or he should be able to have desert. He's been trained by his privileged upbringing that saying sorry doesn't mean you actually have to be sorry.

Can you imagine what an employee at Deco Labels would be doing now if they had done the shit Ford had? He was calling for the head of people sleeping on the job at city hall and there he is a drunk and a crack head. The hypocrisy of it is astounding.

I truly think at the end of the day that Ford doesn't actually like being Mayor. He likes the thrill of chasing an election and fighting opponents. I don't think he could give a shit about the day to day running of the city. He just wants a fight all the time that's what he gets up in the morning for. Being that type of guy he should be fair to all his constituents and look for a different line of work.

@ Mike

The rich comment is valid. He, like a lot of the rich, tend to think that public sector workers with half decent benefit packages should give up what they have been given. It tends to be a very narrow attitude that the private sector is run perfectly and the public sector is a disaster. I've listened to him for years on the radio. His wealth has affected his view. I don't think he truly understands the struggle that most people have with their finances.

February 25, 2014 @ 10:48 AM

Hey Mike - I have two more question for you to ask Jim Richards during your podcast...

If he was buying a loved one a special ring, would he go to Spence or Omni.

Here I go - appearing to defend Rob Ford! Let's see how quickly this gets me branded as part of Ford Nation.

Mike, if you're going to at least give some appearance of fairness, you should at least update your Ford Pledge-o-meter graphic. New one is here:

I'm always amused by these conversations because if Ford fails at accomplishing his pledges, he has to wear it as a personal failure. If he has any successes though, credit is given only to City Council. Can we really have it both ways?

Neither Tory nor Ford are self-made, both came from family money. It's just preposterous for Doug to attack Tory as an "elite chauvinist".

@Corey, I've been shitting on Mallick's columns every chance I get. I prefer to read Chris Selley's reviews of them, but he rarely deigns himself to recognise her.

The most words he's spent on her in a while:

And the Star‘s Heather Mallick sees income-splitting as a Conservative plot “to lure women into becoming old-tyme housewives, like Laureen Harper and Renata Ford, dependent on their husbands.” (Well, obviously.) Also, she says that Scarlett Johansson, by stumping for Sodastream fizzy-water makers — which are awesome, incidentally — has demonstrated both “greed and a hard regard for the desperate Palestinians who work on stolen land.” Mallick conspicuously does not offer to pay any of Sodastream’s Palestinian workers’ salaries should they choose to resign in protest. But she does think Woody Allen is “monstrous.” Yes, it’s one column.

Mike, I don't get how you can listen to Indie 88 on any sustained period. Oh wait, maybe I do get it.

But anyway, it is a brutally programmed repetitive, predictable playlist with no innovation or creativity at all. I suspect that most of the request show is also programmed. They repeat artists almost every hour it seems, and they are very rigid on their playlist. Some good tunes, but way too repetitive.

I keep trying and I keep getting disappointed as are many and they do not seem to listen.

Prediction: Over the next few months, we may actually see Ford in the office, behaving, and not dropping "whatthefuck" bombs every week. The only reason is... it's election time, and he'll have undoubtedly hired a PR firm again.

Which means-- well, y'know all those times over the past few years, when Ford really needed someone standing over his shoulder, telling him "Shut the fuck up, and say this and only this"? Now he'll be paying people to do just that.

Expect: very carefully planned appearances and speeches, and a new buzzword, feel good laden "ideal" to be rolled out ala Gravy Train.

Because, after all-- that is the one and only reason he "looked good" during the last election. He hired a PR firm. They came up with the "common guy like you fighting the Gravy Train" image. Why do you think it got so much publicity? Why do you think it got repeated verbatim and word-for-word over and over? PR firm. FFS, the firm he hired basically boasted "If we could get him elected by doing what we do, we can get anyone elected".

February 25, 2014 @ 1:43 PM

There is no alternative to Rob Ford in this years election.
You have Tory who can't win anything.
Chow, I wouldn't wish her on my worst enemy.
Stintz, no more to be said here.

Since that term confuses you, let's not use that term.

On this site, so long as I own and operate it, no commenter can slag a homosexual for being "unnatural", a "deviant" a "sinner" or use the sexual preference as a derogatory and/or negative label.

I won't have a gay kid reading here that he/she is flawed, lesser or in any way inferior.

February 25, 2014 @ 5:11 PM

@ Toronto Mike,

That's awesome. Please let me know. I'm hoping I'm home. Anytime after the 17th of March. Like I said, I'll play nice if I can attend and I'll come prepared.

Yes, Skot changed his name to Scot just before he left 'NY, but I still type it Skot. It's what I did for so long!

@ Cheryl

Neither of those teams have a chance. My prediction is Koe vs Morris in the final.

February 25, 2014 @ 5:12 PM

Mike from Lowville

@ Corey, what I got from Mallick's column was what is wrong with us as Canadians. When something needs to be done about anything important we, just talk, argue, bitch, complain about it but, never DO anything about it! Don't tell me protests don't work. The latest Ukraine protest demonstrates that they do. They say protest at the ballot box. Hell, we can't even do that!

February 25, 2014 @ 6:03 PM

Ford didn't give into lobbyists? Then I wonder why he was pushing for a casino so hard, to trying to up-end waterfront development in favour of a mega-mall...

I'm sure Ford receives more than his fair share of backdoor lobbyists. Especially since he's so well practiced at hiding his every single daily activity.

February 25, 2014 @ 6:03 PM

@Mike from Lowville -

Uh, okay, if that's what you got from it, fine. But what does any of that have to do with Finland?

February 25, 2014 @ 7:22 PM

@ Everyone

It's Mike's challenge for his Ride For Cancer to reach his goal for his goal of $4000.00. Mike has committed to this ride & it will be a long journey.

Please donate EVERYONE for this worthy cause & make BOTH Mike's proud. Many already have & some have not YET.

According to Mark Towhey a bit more was accomplished then eliminating the VRT.
Here's a list he had posted on his blog.

"We did hold the line on spending for three years.
We did reduce taxes by eliminating the Vehicle Registration Tax.
We did keep property tax increases under inflation.
We did reduce costs and improve the quality of service by outsourcing garbage pick up.
We did negotiate a union contract that saved taxpayers money, that improved management’s ability to manage effectively – and that respected hardworking city employees.
We did make the TTC an essential service – something that most users, rightly or wrongly, wanted.
We did reduce Councillors tax-free expense accounts and unreasonable perks.
We did conduct an unprecedented review of city services that has already saved millions of dollars and, if it is pursued, will save hundreds of millions more over years to come.
We did change the timing of budgets and ended the culture of using surpluses to false balance the budget."

Mark does go on to talk about how things have fallen off the rails and that Ford should not be running. Is he a disgruntled former employee? Or an insider who realizes Ford cannot accomplish anything more?
Not for me to answer. My opinion has no merit. I no longer live in Toronto and wouldn't want @Wayner on my case.

@ Cheryl Happy to see that your trainer is still going to play Major League Tuesday nights thats a pretty big deal.Anyways i am PVR ing all the brier so i can watch it all at once when it is over so i dont want to no who wins beforehand.

February 26, 2014 @ 1:49 AM

@Wayner (and everyone else) - not true. You don't have to live in Toronto to vote in their elections. You only have to own property in the 416 to vote (as well as any other municipality). Those of us who live in other area codes may be qualified voters.

February 26, 2014 @ 6:26 AM

Laughing at "a union contract". What about the police contract where he blew it?

February 26, 2014 @ 8:00 AM

Again, the more hatred I see towards Ford the more I want him to win. Just think what the next four years will be like for the haters, The Star, Now Magazine and their "journalists" if Ford wins. FORD MORE YEARS!!!

I might just move back to Toronto just so I can vote. OK, maybe not.

February 26, 2014 @ 8:37 AM

Wonderful Christian attitude you have, Argie.

When did Jesus hope for the misery of others?

February 26, 2014 @ 8:42 AM

I live outside the GTA and don't understand the love for Olivia Chow. I always saw her as Jack's tree hugging sidekick. Can someone explain?

@Andrew. I listen to satellite 95% of the time but Q107 the other 5%. It would be fantastic if they played OLP but I don't think I've heard them on there in the last 10 years. Call me Captain Obvious but I don't think Q has more than 100 songs in their playlist!

February 26, 2014 @ 8:46 AM

Nice try. These freaks have no reason to be miserable. Even if they do, its not because of Ford.

February 26, 2014 @ 9:08 AM

Which freaks?

On one specific point, I think everyone who lives and works in Toronto can be miserable over commuting. It's utter shit in this city and amongst the worst in the world. Whether you're driving or taking transit.

The Scarborough subway is literally my main piss-off with Ford (and Stintz and now Tory). It's unfathomably expensive and doesn't do anything to reduce congestion for anyone.

Guess what? Ford is raising taxes to pay for it, and the existing under-funded transit is going to have more cash diverted to run this under-utilized line which is still going to serve to further congest Yonge.

That's all on Rob.

February 26, 2014 @ 9:40 AM

@ Argie, I chuckled just a little :)

But, believe me, there are more than just "freaks" who dislike Ford.

I am a 32 year old, herterosexual,Christian (well...lapsed catholic), white man. I work as a Sales Supervisor for a mid sized company, and am on the fast track to a managment position. I completely fall into the demographic of people whose opinion "matter" by your standards. I'd be miserable if Ford was my Mayor (thanks Hazel!!!!)

(This comment is from outside the GTA. Therefore the opinion of this individual carries no weight, adds nothing to the discussion and should be ignored by those who have a vote).

February 26, 2014 @ 10:16 AM

Sorry Mike...had to do the disclaimer once...it looked like way too much fun not too!

February 26, 2014 @ 10:17 AM

Sidenote: Ford is currently in Ottawa asking the feds for winter storm emergency funding after he and his brother voted against a council motion to ask the feds for that very same money.

February 26, 2014 @ 10:18 AM

All opinions matter. I just don't get the time and effort that is spent reporting Ford's every move (see the above post by markossar as an example).

Go onto Twitter and facebook and follow some of these clowns and you'll know what I mean.

February 26, 2014 @ 10:25 AM

Brilliant. Ford is just the greatest guy ever and how dare someone try to contradict with demonstrable proof. Completely done paying any attention to you. You're just a troll through and through.

February 26, 2014 @ 10:42 AM

@ Argie - I will concede that some of the folks on here are obsessed with their hatred of Ford, almost to the point of stalking.

However, you picked a bad post to use as an example. The fact that the Brothers Ford decided to disregard the wishes of the council and go to Ottawa anyway is a perfect example of the ego of Rob Ford.

"Fuck what everyone else says, I'm Rob Ford I know Better" - Rob Ford (

Please note this is not a direct quotation, and more the spirit of the man's attitude).

February 26, 2014 @ 10:43 AM

You need to stop stalking me. I realize this weather sucks but can you find another indoor hobby/obsession?

You just never know who will win. Balsdon beat Howard. Currie went on to win the Northern Ontario Provincials. I want Balsdon or Currie to win. They have a chance or they wouldn't play the games. Next season I will still cheer for my trainer's team even if my trainer isn't playing all the time.

My Suns lost last night. That's not good. The Raptors keep winning. Don't tell me the Raptors are going to be champions.

February 26, 2014 @ 11:10 AM

Ben Vidal

Sorry die hard conservatives. It must suck that most of the financial pillars that are clung onto by the the Conservatives of Canada and the republicans to the south of us continue to be dis proven. First trickle down economics is a bust, then raising minimum wage won't bankrupt the country, austerity doesn't work and now this. Whatever do you have left to cling on to?

February 26, 2014 @ 12:06 PM

Ya know what grinds my gears?

People in Montreal who say "Course you need a Montreal goalie to win Gold!!" Cary Price is from Anahim Lake, BC.

If, in 4 years, the NHL decides to go to Korea, and Bernier keeps playing the way he is, it is likely that he will be on that team. If we win gold with Bernier in net, I don't want to hear one frenchie claiming him as theirs. He plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs, ayou can't have it both ways.

....damn French

February 26, 2014 @ 1:01 PM

@Toronto Mike

Sorry, I think I broke your blog...

February 26, 2014 @ 2:10 PM

No, that's normal here.

February 26, 2014 @ 2:21 PM

My Habs lost last night and my Suns lost. Not a good night. My trainer lost to Frans on Tuesday in Major League, but they're not out of it yet. They have at least one more game.

When is it going to warm up. It better be warmer on March 16, believe me. I'm going on a race with my trainer, a 5 km walk on that day. There is no way I'm going if it's going to be this cold. I know it's Canada and winter, but this is too much. I don't think we ever had a winter this bad.
