How about that snow.....

First cold of the season hit yesterday and has literally crippled me. It feels like a small kid is standing on my chest I'm so congested.

Doesn't help having to get up and shovel this morning when regular breathing is a chore.

Wiarton Willie is an asshole and so is his shadow.

February 18, 2014 @ 10:00 AM

Brrrrr

Fuck this winter.

February 18, 2014 @ 10:17 AM

Glen

I hate to be THAT guy but shouldn't we have more than 4 Gold Medals in Sochi for a country this size? We had 14 in Vancouver.

The Netherlands has 1/2 our population yet if you include the London Games they have won a total of 11 Gold Medals. We received exactly 1 Gold in London.

Before you say it we aren't guaranteed Gold for men and womens hockey.

February 18, 2014 @ 10:25 AM

Corey

How are people feeling about the Men's Hockey thus far? I'm making the assumption that it will be Canada vs. USA. That might be a big assumption, especially if we end up playing Switzerland in the Quarter-finals. Team USA scares me. Anyone want to predict the finals?

I'll say Russia vs. USA for Gold, and Canada vs. Sweden for bronze.

@Glen

It's worth noting that all of The Netherlands' medals are in the same discipline: long track speed skating.

They're only good at one thing, but they're very good at it.

February 18, 2014 @ 10:32 AM

Corey

Sorry - bit of a confusing post. The second sentence should have read: I'm making the assumption that it will be Canada vs. USA in the semi-finals.

@Corey

That feels like a safe assumption to me. Nothing is guaranteed, but we should beat Switzerland to advance.

Unless Martin Gerber is in net.

February 18, 2014 @ 10:37 AM

Corey

@Mike -

Yeah, the Swiss always step it up against us. It took a shoot-out to beat them in Vancouver. And they're playing very well in Sochi - I'm definitley not taking them for granted.

February 18, 2014 @ 10:46 AM

Argie

I'm expecting a CAD/SWE final. I also feel Sweden has a more complete team - great goaltending, def and fwds.

CAN seems to be running into the same issue they had in 2006 & 1998 - not enough offensive power. I realize we beat Austria 6-0 but that wont matter when we're up against a team that knows how to defend.

But in all seriousness, our two golds have come on North American soil. We did shitty in Nagano and Torino.

GO CANADA GO

The Swiss will be a good opponent that Canada can use to keep improving their game.
If we can get our forwards to starting putting the puck in the net and not just on net we should be good :) Should be the operative word here.

@markosaar

It's a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and it's great!

Now to let my iPhone snob friends know what they're missing. :)

February 18, 2014 @ 11:44 AM

@Lyle - A friend of mine owns several handfuls of Rogers stores. He's a gadget geek, so he tries out all of the phones. He and his staff have all been telling people for a few years now that the more you need a phone to actually do "phone things", the more you should choose an Android phone. The more you lean toward wanting an entertainment device, the better the iPhone is for you. While he can afford whatever he wants, it irritates him to pay the premium pricing for Apple peripherals, "most of which are not necessarily any better" (than for Android).

I've had it with winter, too. I shoveled my driveway before leaving for work. My side of the street had twice as much of the (fortunately light and fluffy) snow - just the way the wind blew this time. I have never really liked those "bent shaft" shovels that are recommended to be better for your back, because they're better for pushing the snow. You have to LIFT the snow at some point in the snow clearing process; I lift using my legs (working in meat factories taught me well). I've always preferred a "traditional" solid wood shaft with a full metal blade. Well, that one is showing its age, with about a third of the vertical blade height gone from wear, so I thought I would use the bent shaft one. I usually avoid the bent shaft one because it so easily gives up the ghost and threatens to bend. It bent today on about the third lift of snow. It's going in the garbage, and I am going to (probably Home Depot because it's the most-convenient) get a new "traditional" shovel. I hope I can find one.

Put me in the Android camp. I had a Samsung Galaxy S for years and now happily rock an LG G2. It's big, fast and has great battery life. I'm a happy guy.

I've got to get out there and shovel. Days like this really mess with my bike ride training.

Finally got around to fully subscribing to Rdio. I like it because I can stream via my iPhone or at home I can stream it through the house with my Sonos system.

I now use the following services:

Sirius
Rdio
Songza
8Tracks
and lots of internet radio stations.

Rdio is especially good for when I'm working and a producer or director says, 'hey, do you have such and such?' and I can check my own library and if not, find it via Rdio.

Cheers,

February 18, 2014 @ 12:00 PM

Lorne

@Andrew: question for you, since you've been "on the scene" before.

I was watching Figure Skating this weekend. After each routine, as you may know, people throw stuffed animals and bouquets onto the ice for the dancers. But it seems that not everyone's throwing arm is at Olympic levels. More than once, I saw someone from the behind-the-boards sidelines pick up the flowers and throw them the rest of the way onto the ice.

A couple times, the person throwing was one of those dressed in black, wearing headphones, carrying a clipboard types. They would snatch up the bouquet, storm to the boards, and chuck the flowers onto the ice. The look on their face just screamed "just got whomped in the head... again!"

So-- how often does that actually happen-- when some poor cameraman or grip or line producer gets a dozen longstems to the back of the head?

February 18, 2014 @ 12:08 PM

Corey

Put me firmly in the Apple camp still. About a year ago, my company switched their telecom plan from Bell to Rogers. With that came a whole new line up of phones (previously, we were predominantly BlackBerry). I got a Samsung Galaxy s3. I gave it every opportunity, I really did. It now sits in my desk drawer, unused and unloved, and I did something I swore I'd never do. I added my corporate email and calendar account to my personal device (iPhone 4S). That's saying something, especially since I carried a company BlackBerry for years prior.

February 18, 2014 @ 12:15 PM

markosaar

@Corey, a bit late now, but is there anything in particular that bugged you about the S3?

I personally dislike the way Samsung designs their interfaces, and I go out of my way to customise the phone and get rid of that crap. Can't recommend that to the average user though.

February 18, 2014 @ 12:21 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

My wife carries the Samsung Galaxy S III and she's happy.

I've said this before, but those who choose Android seem very happy, and those who choose iPhone seem very happy. Once you decide which you prefer, you'll likely be very happy.

February 18, 2014 @ 12:25 PM

Rachel

Switzerland has a great goalie. That's my worry.

Mike: Ask Jeff Marek how he thinks we'll do.

February 18, 2014 @ 12:36 PM

Geoff

"how he thinks we'll do"?! What position do you play?

February 18, 2014 @ 12:51 PM

Corey

@markosaar -

Right from the get-go, the form factor of the Samsung bugged me. It just does not feel right - slippery and cheap feeling, and not "grippable" either as a phone, or for typing.

Also, the battery life is horrible. Not sure if it was just this particular phone, but even with all of the extraneous shit turned off, I could practically watch the battery meter decrease.

Finally, as Mike suggests, it's probably personal preference. I could live with the BlackBerry, because it was utilitarian, and made a certain amount of sense as a business device. I think with transitioning to Android, as an iOS user, I'm expecting things to work a certain way, so everything just "felt" wrong, and I'd find myself thinking, "Why would you have to it (whatever operation I was trying to do)this way, instead of the way it should be done?"

I've also started thinking that the effect of switching between OSs is magnified on mobile devices. I can and do switch between Mac OS and Windows on desktops without a second thought.

February 18, 2014 @ 12:52 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Geoff

I'm guilty of this as well, and I apologize to nobody.

When the Leafs play, we're playing. When Canada plays, we're playing.

It's my team, even if I'm not on the ice!

February 18, 2014 @ 12:53 PM

Andrew

@Lorne,

More than you can count. Apparently people think throwing light or heavy bouquets from the upper echelons of the venue will make it to the ice. Guys get whacked all the time and it takes everything they have not to heave them back into the stands!

It's the same when someone gets a hat trick and the yob in the grey's thinks his hat will reach the ice level and instead smacks someone else in the stands below them.

TV sucks sometimes :)

Andrew

@ Argie,

The same idiots who throw perfectly good hats onto the ice after a hat trick. I have never figured that one out. All the hats get thrown out, it's not like they're donated anywhere.

They also sell teddy bears and other crap to 'give' to the skaters. To this day, I have never seen a skate keep anything that had been thrown onto the ice. They might have it in the 'kiss N' cry' area, but after that, it gets tossed.

Total waste.

I guess this is kind of on the topic of throwing stuff on the ice.

I understand the concept behind the Teddy Bear toss (many arenas do these around Christmas to support needy kids), but I have a general beef with this.

Donating the toys is of course very generous, but how many needy kids want a teddy bear?
I'd assume this would end around 5 year old boys and MAYBE 8 or 9 year old girls. I might be being a little generous here as far as ages go.

You're better off going to Walmart or Target and getting $20 bucks worth of hot wheels or barbies and putting that in a Salvation Army bin.

@ 519,

A lot of the hockey teams, especially in the CHL do the teddy bear toss thing. I think most of them are in connection with the local hospital or children's hospital. My son got a bear from Sick Kids when he had an operation there at 9 months old. It is still one of his most favourite as it was in the operating room with him and he woke up with it clutched in his arms.

Throwing roses or flowers or hats for that matter doesn't make any sense to me :)

Not A Friend

I've been listening to the H&F podcast now off and on since THE GREAT ALAN CROSS CONTROVERSY™. Some things never change do they? The last show I heard opened with Freddie teeing off on JIm Tatti for daring to refer to Robert Luongo as "Bobby Lou". Unsurprisingly, Fred being Fred (read: oblivious), was completely unaware that this was actually a thing. Most people in this day and age might take the 3 seconds it would take to Google the term "Bobby Lou" and realize that when every single fucking result returned is about Robert Luongo, they probably shouldn't bother going on a rant about it. But whatever - the real point is that yet again, the two think they're such savvy, amazing broadcasters that they can sit there and attack someone like Jim Tatti, and question how someone like that continues to work in the business (Howard's words). Are you fucking kidding me? First off, for two guys who fancy themselves comedians, how do they manage overlook the fact that part of Tatti and Hebscher's schtick revolved around playing off stupid sports nicknames (the fact Hebscher was called "Hebsy" would be a clue). Secondly, Tatti and Hebscher on Sportsline basically INVENTED the irreverent sportscast that has gone on to propel guys like Onrait and O'Toole to big dollar careers in the US. Yet Freddie thinks Tatti was just trying to be "cool". Tatti and Hebscher actually have a legacy, you dimwits - they were pioneers that have left behind a body of work people actually remember to this day. Humble and Fred, with their usual revisionist history will try and convince everyone that Fred was this subversive, clever sportscaster in his own right, who could see past all of the BS and egos in the dressing room. The reality was, Fred was a dumpy little turd with a bad moustache who was probably completely overlooked in dressing room press scrums, and that's where he formed his distaste for professional athletes. The shame of the whole thing is that when H&F sit back and talk about general shit, they are actually funny and entertaining. When they decide they're big shots who can mock other broadcasters, they look petty and pathetic. It's been said over and over, but it needs to be said again - if they were nearly as good as they think they were, they'd still be broadcasting for the big dollars.

February 19, 2014 @ 1:39 PM

markosaar

@Argie,

"Projecting" has been a lame refuge in pop-psychology for at least twenty years. I wasn't aware that it was suddenly fashionable again.

You love crying "personal attacks" but have no qualms about brushing someone you are ideologically opposed to as a "sad, sexually dysfunctional wank[s]".

The problem is that there's no sense in arguing with you. We're apparently diametrically opposed.

I would argue that you're irrational in your beliefs (my opinion) -- that if I were to continue pushing down this argument, it would ultimately come down to you having problems with gay people due to either plain homophobia, or maybe 'just' scripture and faith, and nothing I can say will change your opinion. Please disabuse me of this assumption if I'm incorrect.

Conversely I don't think you could ever convince me that gay rights are a problem. I constantly argue with people that abhor homosexual people having equal rights, constantly citing stats and reports, and I've looked at them all. They're so insanely biased and/or deeply flawed. Cite any and I'll refute it.

Just to humour you once, I'll address your original point, about Ford being "bullied":

It's intellectually dishonest to muddle the two. First of all, those who speak about "the horrors of bullying" are talking about developing children, who generally can't change what they are. Be it sexual orientation, a weight problem, talking funny, whatever.

Ford is an adult, and in public office. You're confusing bullying with holding someone accountable. He constantly lies, and he or his brother act offended when there's push-back.

If you're referring to the recent rainbow flag "controversy" at city hall, it's frigging stupid because the biggest, tallest flag there is and has always been a Canadian one. He keeps lying, as always, claiming the rainbow one is more prominent.

February 19, 2014 @ 1:53 PM

Argie

@mark
There's nothing wrong with criticizing the job Ford is doing. If you or anyone else disagree with his policies, by all means call him out.

I'm referring to the constant barrage of personal attacks on him. If a bunch of crazed right-wingers did the same to a liberal politician, there would be an outrage from the left. Do you not agree?

The attacks on him have been even worse than the attacks on Bush during his time as Prez. Up until them, we had never seen anything close to that.

This is not just about the flag issue. Its amazing how important a rainbow flag is to some people. As I wrote earlier, there only be the Cda and City of Toronto flag at City Hall. just my opinion.

As for the "lying", seriously, can you name a politician (past or present) who doesn't lie? This is nothing new.

February 19, 2014 @ 2:04 PM

markosaar

@Argie,

I suppose it's your right to raise "outrage". There's no doubt Obama suffers those sorts of attacks in the US. The weird Canadian perspective is that Obama is generally further right than our right-wing parties.

In an ideal world, everyone would drop the extreme rhetoric. Politically I want nothing more than to have the different sides try to work together, behave like adults, and find common ground. Question Period is an effing joke. As is city hall.

I agree the rainbow flag issue is (relatively) unimportant, but it works both ways. Why is Ford making it an issue? He could/should have made his point and dropped it after the initial outcry, but he himself keeps bringing it back.

The problem with Ford's lying is that he's so utterly brazen about it and it's utterly destructive. Most politicians don't lie like he does. Sure they use weaselly words, or change their minds later (perhaps having always intended to...) but at least they acknowledge it. Literally everything Ford says needs to be fact-checked and is always, at best, an exaggeration.

Not a popular politician, but how much of what Harper has said or done can be accused of being lies? The senate scandal implicates him, but that's ... one lie.

Wynne might be lying about her involvement in McGuinty's messes, but otherwise she holds her cards close.

We always need to be sceptical of politicians' claims, but Ford constantly makes shit up to "prove" his points.

Well, my trainer got the bib. It does say Carter on it, but it wasn't feelable. He's still too little for that bib though. He'll have to wait a few months before he can use it. Now the Leafs bib is out of my house.

I went skating today for the last time. The rink at Rosedale Park closes Sunday. I'm not seeing my trainer tomorrow or the weekend. The rink will be closed next week. Sucks because you never know. There could be four or five more weeks of winter left. Anyway, they really should keep it open longer.

Well, apparently Carey Price won't be playing, Mike Smith will. Oh well, he better be on his game. Oh well, it's not fair that they sit PK Subban. I mean if you're not going to play him, why have him along. Anyway, that's kind of dumb. Oh well, real NHL hockey will start next week. That will be good. A week from tomorrow is the Brier as well. I have two teams to cheer for, either Balsdon or Currie. Balsdon is my trainer's friends and Currie has my trainer's brother on it. It will be the best Brier ever with no Howard or Jacobs.
