Although Fregosi managed our Jays for two seasons, I'll best remember him as the manager of the '93 Phillies. Afterall, it was his decision to leave Wild Thing in that game 6...

It's still bloody cold on the prairies. Will this ever end?

I did it!!! One year to the day (yesterday) I finally hit the 80 kg (176 lb) mark! At my physical one year ago I was 90 kg (198 lb) and I was disgusted with myself, so I started a health plan Feb 13/13. The weight loss was entirely responsible. No fads, no starving. I cut down my portions to maybe 75-80%, cut out junk food and desserts except for our Saturday video cheat night, started eating a proper breakfast in the morning and cut out pop and carbonated soft drinks. I also started an exercise program similar to @Toronto Mike's program. Mike also gave me great advice offlist, so thank you. I started walking more. Well, I walk all the time anyway because I'm not permitted to drive a car, but I started walking on my lunch break and in the evenings with my wife. I work next to a walking trail and there are exercise machines there too, so I make full use of a one hour lunch. I started lifting hand weights in my basement while dorking around on the pc. I'm an alumni at a post-secondary school and I took out a membership in the gym ($50/yr!!!). I use the treadmill and bike when it's too cold or dangerous to walk outside. Above all, I keep a daily chart of what I eat, the calories, and how much I exercise. Would you believe I had an enjoyable time over Xmas, indulged just enough to have fun, and barely gained a pound!

The interesting thing is that last summer I hit a floor and I hovered on 84-86 kg for months. I didn't increase my exercise routine in any way lately, and in just the last couple of months I dropped the extra few kg out of the blue. I have no explanation for this.

I'm not watching the olympics, but Go Canada Go anyway!

Good for you! 10 kg is significant!

It's that simple... get out and walk and cut out the junk. No fad diet required!

Hopefully it warms up for you soon. We're expecting a high of -1 today, which sounds like summer to me.

Yes, I'm back.

Due to the begging and pleas from the masses I've returned. OK, there wasn't any begging or pleading but nevertheless I'm back.

There are so many things to bitch/comment on but in order to avoid being called an effing idiot, moron, homophobe, racist, Nazi, misogynist, (um, did I miss anything???) and whatever else from that ever tolerant peace loving liberal crowd, I'll keep my comments to a minimum.

Then again, I might just stick to commenting on something someone else posts. Its easier that way.

Just kidding. I've only checked in sporadically lately so I never really noticed. Look on the bright side, at least you'll never be accused of being a communist, pinko, candy-assed dupe. And thank Heaven for that!

@ Dave - That's awesome!!! Good for you man. I've been on a health kick. I've never gotten around to switching from Lbs to KG's, but I went from 240 down to 185 from When my ex and I split last March. Same as you guys, just cut the crap out my diet and started an exercise regiment.

I've put about 10 lbs since Christmas, but It's been all muscle, my waistline is the same, and my fat count has actually gone down. I figure a guy my height (6'1") should be about 205-215 if I've got some decent muscle mass.

WELCOME BACK ARGIE!

February 14, 2014 @ 10:18 AM

Philly-Bob

Hey Mike - Could you maybe send me some dietary suggestions (like the smoothie post you made). I want to get rid of the last of my spare tire, and from what I've been told, my exercise level is good. It's been suggested that I need to have a more well rounded breakfast (really hard while trying to get a 6 year old ready for school and myself to work by 8). So I'm thinking of smoothies in morning. But generally I'm just looking for more of these "super foods" that are high in anti-oxidants and such.

Tough to take anything away from that game. I watched it, and there was a lot of "whoa this ice is really big" and "who the hell are you?" going on. I see these opening three as exhibition games while we figure out the ice and the chemistry before the real tournament begins.

The fact is, when you look at scoring chances yesterday, we absolutely dominated Norway. Of course, we should dominate Norway. We'll see how Luongo does today against the Austrians.

February 14, 2014 @ 10:21 AM

@Philly-Bob

My diet is my weakness... I don't think it's very good, hence the need for kale smoothies.

When I lost 20kg recently, it was as simple as cutting down on junk like chips, cookies, cake and other high sugar, highly processed foods. At the time, I did a lot of walking and swimming, but now it's mainly walking and biking.

The big trick is to make stuff yourself. Like pizza, for example... I love pizza, so I made my own pizza. I'd eat scrambled eggs a lot, my cereal of choice was Special K and when I was having spaghetti for dinner, I didn't have four portions just because it tasted so damn good. Portion control is key.

I still don't think my diet is great, but I'm still enjoying my smoothies that ensures I get my veggies!

Quebec separatists must be losing their minds seeing Quebec athletes waving the Canadian flag in Sochi.

So much so the PQ Education Minster Tweeted a photoshopped picture of Chloe and Justine Dufour-Lapointe.

This is his Twitter account:

https://twitter.com/duchp

In the first photo the sisters are hamming it up wearing those red maple leaf mittens. It appears on the official Canadian Olympic Committee website. The second doctored photo has the maple leaf replaced with the blue fleur-de-lis and QUE is written on the mittens instead of CAN..

Remember something. The Quebec separatists will use every means necessary to achieve an independent country. They tried voter fraud in the 1995 referendum and today they will use social media propaganda like this.

George Orwell would be proud.

I'm being totally serious when I say tonight's men's figure skating will be our most important gold medal (next to men's hockey) if Chan wins. Twenty years from now, people will remember Chan winning gold - they won't however remember who won the slopestyle skateboard on snow or other BS events. This is the premier event of the games.

Go Chan, go - and don't screw it up!

Well let the weight loss continue.

First, congrats to @Blind Dave and @ Phily Bob (and Mike too).

I started a work out plan in Aug last year.
Right now I am down 30lbs.
I was really hoping to get under 200lbs for my Bday (it was last week) but I fell a little short.

My biggest problem now is I seem to have hit a plateau. I haven't changed too much, but I can't quite seem to lose weight now. I just hover around the same general weight.

My workout is 90% cardio (run, bike, stepper, stair climber) though I do get in a little weights (I find that pretty intimidating at the gym I go to).

I'm looking forward to the nicer weather so I can get out on my bike more. I've recently moved and now I live pretty close to some nice bike paths in Guelph.

@ Mike - I'm huge into scrambled eggs too, especially after a workout. As far as pizza goes, I'm certainly not going to make my own dough, so is there a benefit to buying shells at the grocery store and making my own vs. ordering/ frozen?

I'm all over the portion control...no more eating until I'm stuffed...only till I'm satisfied. I go with raisin bran instead of special K...does that work? or should I just start adding raisins to my special K?

And the veggie smoothies are a must...

February 14, 2014 @ 12:27 PM

Philly-Bob

@ Mike/Glen/Argie - Mike hit the nail on the head there. When people ask me my political lean, I usually say centrist, because I am a fiscal conservative, but a social liberal.

I'm sick of our hard earned tax dollars going to special interest groups who squander it, corrupt politicians who steal it, and unions who are to lazy to go earn it.

But socially, I think everyone should have the right to believe what they like, say what they believe and be with who they love, so long as it doesn't harm anyone else.

So yes, Mike is right, those who are still stuck in the 1970 mentality of only White Men of a certain age and social standing being deserving of an opinion and happiness are dinosaurs.

How does 2 men (or women) who love each other getting married have any bearing on anyone else's life? Could any of our conservative friends explain to me how that affects them at all??

Glen? Argie?

These are sincere questions. I'm interested...

He sounds like a high school girl who gets upset and runs out of the room hoping someone will follow her and coax her back in and then everyone is supposed to feel bad for her.

And a three day absence necessitated an e-mail to Mike to saying he was taking a leave? Someone is a drama queen.

You want to disagree with me that 2 people who love each other have a right to get married...I'm going to call you a dinosaur.

I ask again....why does it matter to you.

@ McNulty - I for one think PDA's are wrong no matter the participants...holding hands, a quick kiss..sure. But standing in the middle of the street with your tounges jammed down each others throats? I don't care who the participants are...save it for private.

@Phillippe-Roberto: The advantage to making your own dough is:

1) Portion control. You pick how big to make it
2) Sodium and fat control. A lot of the store-bought pizza crusts are lousy with salt and fat. Check the label on the back. When you make your own, you have more control
3) Flavor. Because it isn't "made to last" bread, the flavor is so much better. And you can modify the flavor yourself. Try throwing in a teaspoon of oregano to the dough. Or cayenne.
4) The smell! You make the dough. You bake the dough. Your house now smells like fresh made bread. =)

Pretty much the same goes for pizza sauce. Most sauces, especially the weird package you get with the dough, are full of salt as a preservative, and as such, are full of sugar to offset the flavor.

Tomato sauce is stupidly easy to make. Get a $1 tin of diced or whole tomatoes. Check the label to make sure they aren't also full of salt (some brands are). Heat a bit of oil, throw in some chopped garlic, cook for, like, 30 seconds, dump the tin of tomatoes in. Crush with a spoon (or a hand blender if you have). Add just enough salt, pepper and chili flakes for flavor. Cook until it's thick. Sauce.

I usually buy a bunch of the San Marzano tomatoes from Costco. ~$3 a tin, and one tin will get, usually, about 2 litres of sauce after cooking. Freeze it in mason jars (250ml and 500ml portions), then defrost as needed. 2-3 minutes in the microwave defrosts it. Cook it further for thick tomato sauce. I'll usually fry up some ground beef, onions and mushrooms, then toss the sauce in right at the end. Instant meat sauce for pasta.

You'll never want to go back to Prego. =)

Mike, I respect that this is your blog and you'll moderate it how you see fit, but from my perspective censorship is bogus. I feel it actually creates more problems. Case in point - I defended Argie based on the fact that I had never read anything that proved to me he was intolerant or a homophobe (by the definition I provided). Now I learn that you've had to censor offensive comments that would presumably prove he was a homophobe. Now those censored comments, that no one but you saw, are being used to bolster the homophobe reputation. Maybe, had I seen them, I'd come to the same conclusion as you, but otherwise, I'm just supposed to go by what you say. Who are you protecting here? It's not like you're automatically endorsing opinions if you leave the odious ones up. Why not let people be judged by their own words?
By the way, I use Argie as a convenient example, but I really want my point to be applied to any poster and any topic (i.e.: I'm not interested in seeing or hearing about any specific comments that were removed, or getting into a debate about whether Argie is a homophobe or not).

This Toronto Mike has already gotten really lame. It feels like we're entering Rob Ford territory and flogging a dead horse with this "intolerance" debate.

@ McNulty - No doubt. So much so that you goad him into exchanges. You seem to enjoy it. I've been here for a while too.

Anyone heading to the Auto Show? Not looking this year but always like to see what I would put on my list if the 649 etc. kicked in.
@Al. Too bad it's tonight as i have plans. Wouldn't go over well if i suggested a night in a bar listening to a good cover band. Now if that was suggested to me for Valentines day i would be all over it! Let us know the next time you are local, and we can take you up on your drink offer. Cheers

@Lorne

Thank you. I really appreciate your support. After awhile it becomes routine and the body adjusts to less food if done responsibly. I still have to say NO from time to time and sometimes that can be disappointing. Overall I have adapted well.

@519 Rob

Yeah, I hit that plateau too (I called it a floor earlier in this thread). I have no idea why this happens. My wife told me that I'm 50, not 25, and maybe this is my body telling me that's where it needs to be. But then out of the blue I dropped another 5 kg after months of being stagnant and still working out. It surprised me because I stopped weighing myself for awhile. I still monitor my food intake and exercise, but I lost interest in the scales once I hit that floor. Needless to say I am interested again!

I have only started with Argie on very rare occasions. My responses are usually due to his comments. Today I called him out for "leaving" for three days. It was ridiculous.

He decided to say something that was over the line. It's typical Argie crap.

Cheryl

Well, Canada will win Sunday as well with Carey Price. He's the best. I wonder why the Olympics are on at the same time the NBA all star game is on. There's no NHL hockey or NBA basketball this weekend.

Anyway, my trainer lost the last major league game, but they still make the playoffs which is in a couple weeks. Hopefully they win, but can't wait until the Brier on March 1. I hope either Balsdon or Currie win the Brier.

Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik, the guy responsible for killing 77 people (mostly teenagers) in 2011, is threatening to go on a hunger strike if his demands for a Play Station 3 and the ability to choose more "adult" video games (among other demands) aren't met. Can we at least all agree that they should gas this waste of skin ASAP? My personal method would be to inject him with the ebola virus, lock him in his cell for a long enough time so that all that was required was to wash him down the drain with a firehose.

Liz

Okay...how do I say this? I was relieved to get to Cheryl's comment - after slogging through all that had gone before it.

See boys? THAT'S where we're at.

@Argie

This is kind of like the mob - like Michael Corleone said - you try to get out and they pull you back in (loose and probably horrible paraphrase but the sentiment is there).

Can we just get the fuck along? Be the witty Argie I know you can be.

@Blind Dave

Way to go, bud! Really proud of you and happy for your success.

@Lorne

I am SO making that pizza sauce - getting the ingredients tomorrow. San Marzano tomatoes are a must - they are the only ones I'll buy. I get them at Costco, too. A miracle ingredient. They make a big difference when making homemade spaghetti sauce - you asked before what I put in it. The Kid is now home for Reading Week (yay!) and he's asked for the "Momma Sauce" so I'll pay attention to what I do and will write it down. That last batch was really tasty - if I do say so myself. Another 'must' ingredient is pureed sweet red peppers. Naturally sweetens the sauce. TBC. :)

@Al

Best wishes for a great show tonight! Keep letting us know where you're playing - I would really enjoy dropping by and saying hello. My husband - yet another Mike - is a big fan of live music so he'd be there in a flash.

@Corey

You confuse me. If Mike's blog is so lame, why are you such a spirited participant?

@Toronto Mike

Pretty cool - all the rally caps were on for the fundraising - great to see.

Also, found that article I told you and Andrew about - having issues scanning it now that I'm transitioning all the hardware. It's a neat read, though.

@All Toronto Mike People

What's everyone up to this long weekend (if you have one)? Whatever your plans, be sure to be kind to each other - you sweet mother effers.

February 14, 2014 @ 8:17 PM

@Corey

Just saw your post - is that what this puke is asking for? Please tell me his wishes won't be granted. Delusions of grandeur. I'm with you on the virus thing - can Jeffrey Baldwin's grandparents be thrown into the same cell with this waste of skin? That case upsets me so, so much. That poor little boy. What people will do to other people frightens me.

Mike...what happened to your annual Simpson's Valentine's Day Card?

February 14, 2014 @ 8:39 PM

@Liz: I've never tried the pureed red pepper, but I think that's going into my next batch. Thanks for the tip.

Love Ya Mike & everyone again donate what you can for Mike's Ride For Cancer.

Thankfully I'm a survivor for 18 years now after through HELL, with twins at 4 years old & wife diagnosed with Crones disease same year.

The Kid is home and wanted to watch the Robyn Doolittle episode (PVR'd - Daily Show).

It was watched.

She's a fucking disgrace. That's the only book I'd ever condone being burned.

One more fliick of that hair and maybe she'd choke herself.

Sorry, Boon. I know you're a supporter - here's where we depart company on this one.

February 14, 2014 @ 10:37 PM

@ Liz-

I didn't say Mike's blog was lame I said either censorship is lame or this particular Toronto Mike had gotten lame. I'm too lazy to scroll through and verify which one it was.

February 15, 2014 @ 8:30 AM

@ Liz

Why should her book be burned?

February 15, 2014 @ 9:44 AM

Team Canada will win tomorrow. Carey Price will make it happen. I hope PK Subban will play as well. I can't wait for regular hockey to start up again though. Two weeks and then the Brier. As for Valentine's day, it really means nothing to me at all.

Honestly, I've seen her Daily Show appearance, as well as her appearance on The National and Q, and every time I'm impressed with her.

She's well spoken, sharp and attractive. What more do people want?

February 15, 2014 @ 7:28 PM

Cheryl

Guess what. PK Subban isn't playing today. That sucks. Oh well. Anyway, looking forward to regular hockey again. That would be good. February 26 can't come fast enough.

February 16, 2014 @ 7:50 AM

@Toronto Mike

She definitely is pretty - that I will give you. She could have used a hair barrette. I wanted to throw the tv out the window.

Right now, Finland is giving Canada quite the game - I have a lot to do today but I love watching hockey!

Well, Carey Price is one of the best goalies. I think Team Canada will win the gold medal. They haven't lost a game yet, but they should play PK Subban. He's the best. They would have done better with PK Subban playing. Oh well, Habs will be hot when hockey returns again. Habs to the final. Carie Price is a great goalie and He won't be beat.

February 16, 2014 @ 8:53 PM

Cheryl

No new open Mike posted. Oh well. Anyway, Canada will win gold. It's tough to beat Carey Price for sure. I just don't know why they can't play PK Subban more. That really sucks. Anyway, less than two weeks until the Brier. Either Currie or ?Balsdon will win the Brier. One of them will.
