How bout them Leafs :) ?
How bout Eugenie Bouchard?
How about Sid for Captain and alternates Toews and Weber?

Great sports night last night.

The Leafs played a solid game behind great goaltending to win in Phoenix, then we all flipped to TSN to watch Eugenie Bouchard come back and win her quarter-final in Australia.

It's been 30 years since a Canadian has reached a Grand Slam semi in tennis. That was Carling Basssett at the 1984 US Open.

It's now happened twice. Way to go, Eugenie!

Can't wait for Olympic hockey to start. its going to be tough fro Cda with the large ice and all but it should be fun.

Hopefully the islamists don't ruin it all be blowing up people and things with their usual suicide bombs.

Oh and Eugenue is hot, figuratively and literally...

As a Neil Young fan I was curious about the media coverage of his recent Canadian tour and made a point of watching Ezra Levant’s report on Neil Young’s “Blame Canada” tour and subsequent money trail on how this tour was funded.

I was curious to see how Sun News covered it compared to CBC, although I had a pretty good idea going in. Levant did a factual compelling job of portraying Neil as a hypocrite and really not understanding at all what he was protesting about with his changing opinions and vague opinions and comments.

It was almost sad to see, but still a fan of his music if not his political beliefs.

@4 x 4
Bill Carroll on am640 did a pretty good job on Young as well. Unlike Levant, Carroll likes Young as a musician and knows the industry but he petty much slammed him as a hypocrite and simply clueless. It was funny stuff.

The Leafs starts have been a lot better the past couple games, but they can barely hang on beyond the first period. They were outshot 41-29 last night, 15 of them in the second. They're winning because Bernier is playing well again after a few stinkers. Goaltending has saved their asses all season, so despite this steak they have going, I don't feel like they've improved at all.

Perhaps it's just a coincidence, but why is it that so many guys driving BMW's are complete douchebags?

If any of you here are BMW drivers, pause and ask yourself if you are a douchebag. Are you an overly aggressive driver? Do you think you are better than others? Must all your kitchen appliances be Miele? Do you have micro-penis or is it just unusually tiny?

January 21, 2014 @ 10:19 AM

@mrmojorisinca

Yes.

But i find it's a recurring problem, and usually it's BMW's and not other high end cars for the most part. If it was a single incident I wouldn't write about it.

It is funny too how many of these dudes are clones of each other. They often dress the same and are often elitist loose-cannons once they get a few drinks in them. Embarrassing actually.

What book are you currently reading? I'm curious what Toronto Mike's live studio audience is curled up with on a cold winters day.

I've just started reading the novel "The Sisters Brothers" by Patrick DeWitt.

January 21, 2014 @ 10:43 AM

Ben Vidal

@ Ryan: I agree with all the ads. But there is one important one. It is the defacto ride of hipster douchebags. The FIAT 500. The question will never be if the driver is a hipster douche bag, but how big of a hipster douche bag

If you see these cars on the road get away from them. They are often driven by the lowest form of human being.

If you do get to peak inside and see the hipster douche bag driver, who is usually male. You will see some of the following. Oversized tank top in the summer, lu lu lemon workout gear. Complete beard growth on the face, some form of retro hat or toque. A canada goose jacket in the winter. Chances are they will also have a toy dog in the car and not a cool toy dog. Something akin to a Pomeranian or a bichon frise.

A quick add on if you see them driving on a Friday or Saturday evening chances are they are heading to ossington to party with all the hipsters.

A recent trip to Memphis has me reading the Elvis Presley bio "Last Train to Memphis". I like biographies and although I had no particular interest in Presley previously, I guess Memphis does funny things to you. Any way, it's a pretty interesting read. It only covers from his both to the point where he enlisted in 1958, so no bloated, shooting the TV, Vegas Elvis.

I watch tennis off and on, and I'll admit that Eugenie Bouchard winning the way she has been is exciting to watch. It has been a long time since I heard the name Carling Bassett. I once went on a bicycle ride with her. I was cycling through the Bridle Path area, not too far south of my home at the time. She said hello as we stopped at a stop sign, asked where I was riding, and we rode over to Wilket Creek Park down the paths to Lake Ontario, where she thanked me for the company and we headed off in different directions.

Neil Young is so out to lunch with respect to facts about Alberta's oil sands. No doubt there are issues with respect to treaties between our aboriginals and various governments, though. I've never really cared for Neil Young. Now I don't care for his "politics", either. In contrast, there are plenty of artists whose music I love, but I don't care for their politics. Separate the two and enjoy what you like.

BMW drivers. 'Nuff said above. Some of you may recall that I own a Subaru (Legacy GT) and participate in some amateur, but licensed and sanctioned motorsport. A couple of years ago, my driving club teamed up with a local BMW club for what is known as autoslalom or autocross. The course was set up at Mosport's Driver Development Track. The day was a lot of fun, as it nearly always is - for all. At the drivers' meeting at the end of the day, though, the BMW club host noted that, in general, the BMW drivers had been "schooled". Yet these were BMW drivers that had actually taken the time and effort to do some advanced driver training, something that almost nobody, regardless of car brand, does. So we needn't say much about those for whom the only three reasons they own their car are on the propeller badge.

This is great! There have been a couple of studies now that actually support the idea that BMW drivers are assholes. Story and video here:

That's the Steak Queen restaurant at 345 Rexdale Blvd. in Etobicoke. Ford was indeed there last night, and was wearing that exact outfit and pin.

Don't worry, Corey or Speyside will have excuses that he's not drunk, or doing anything wrong and that the video was shot months ago and he's still saving taxpayers money.

Doesn't matter it was shot last night, he drank and he's a joke of a mayor and his brother and him lie about everything.

But Argie will just remind us that he's still the mayor and will continue his Schadenfreude glee of watching lefties hate him.

When asked how he got to and from the restaurant, Rob Ford refused to answer. Rob Ford continually drinks and drives and it's completely unacceptable for anyone let alone the mayor of Toronto.

Rob Ford gold again. His type of personality doesn't lend to lying low for too long.
@Markosaar: Hudak has been dragging that dead horse around now for a few months, and as a Conservative supporter, just wonder why they keep trotting out these shite platforms every election(last election it was chain gangs, Tory's was religious school funding). He forgets he needs to win over the voters not the corporations that only will benefit from this.

You've missed absolutely nothing.

As far as I'm concerned, this is now Torontonians who care vs. Ford Nation.

Olivia Chow is our best bet.

January 21, 2014 @ 7:07 PM

Corey

No, it's not Torontonians who care vs. Ford Nation. It will be Chow by default because Torontonians who still dream of the fiscally responsible leadership that Ford promised will split their vote between probably several options (esp. if Tory runs) and none of the Marxists on City Council will throw their hat in the ring because they are drooling at the prospect of having a bonafide NDPer at the helm. So yes, I imagine Chow will be the next Mayor but it won't be thanks to people "who care".

@Mike

What if John Tory decides to run, would you change your mind?

If Olivia runs & wins look out, tax increases especially as she ran on the coat tails of Jack Layton & she hasn't got a clue.

Fortunately I don't live in T.Dot & still have a $ 4900.00 tax bill this year with another 2.5% increase for this year.

The Ford brothers are a Barnum & Bailey Circus act & time to retire, but many Torontions are concerned about taxes & not what the great city of Toronto is becoming as a comedy on the world global map & Rob's lying & how much he has done - Diddley Squat overall.

January 21, 2014 @ 7:32 PM

@Mike
Why am I not surprised at your choice for Mayor.
She would drag your city back to the tax and spend days and make Mller look like a true fiscal conservative.
If that's what you want then you deserve everything you get. Higher taxes, spending and huge deficits.
Fortunately Ford Nation will prevail.
And a note to McNulty, it is well documented that I gave up on Ford when he admitted his problems. I ate the crow pie.

For someone to throw their support behind Ms. Chow before finding out what her policies are is just as bad as someone saying they'd vote for Mr. Ford no matter what.
That's a ridiculous position to take, regardless of your political views.

January 21, 2014 @ 7:43 PM

McNulty

Speyside

You contradict yourself. You were that "Fortunately Ford Nation will prevail" and then say you've given up on Ford. Which is it?

This is what will be the big issue with Toronto. It'll Chow or Ford. Two terrible choices.

Chow's NDP mentality isn't good the the city of Toronto. With a lack of good candidates it brings rise to people like Chow getting elected. It's how the NDP won Ontario back in the 90s. It's not going to help Toronto.

January 21, 2014 @ 7:47 PM

@McNulty

I just watched the evening news and saw the scrum where Ford admitted he was drinking, and where reporters asked him if he was driving. He quite clearly said, "No, I didn't drive." (0:55 of this clip) While it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see video evidence tomorrow of Ford driving himself away from the restaurant, until then, why do reporters like Robin Doolittle claim he didn't answer the question, causing Toronto Mike to state as fact that Ford was drinking and driving?

Looks like Ford was catching up with his old drug dealer Sandro Lisi as a second video has surfaced http://news.nationalpost.com/2014/01/21/second-rob-ford-video-from-etobicoke-diner-shows-toronto-mayor-meeting-with-man-who-appears-to-be-sandro-lisi/
Rob must drive his older brother Doug crazy, as Doug had come out shortly before Rob and claimed the video was a fake.

January 22, 2014 @ 4:51 AM

Mike from Lowville

Doug should learn to keep his big mouth shut. Not having the facts and pretending that he does only undermines all credibility.

January 22, 2014 @ 6:57 AM

Corey

@Toronto Mike

"Rob Ford continually drinks and drives..."

Okay then, how's this: you strongly insinuated that since he didn't answer the question about driving, and therefore must have been driving. You insinuated sort of like Ford insinuated Dale was a paedophile.

I'm also interested why Robyn Doolittle, "respected journalist" lied and tweeted that Ford didn't answer the question. I wonder if it's because she knows that people get their news from twitter now, and her followers wouldn't question her, and retweet the statement, thus essentially making it "fact".

January 22, 2014 @ 6:57 AM

Sammi

I agree with Luigi. I have no idea what Olivia Chow's policies are. Where does she stand on taxes? Transit? etc, etc, etc. The blind support of her because she is NDP is just as bad as supporting Rob Ford, in my opinion.

January 22, 2014 @ 7:24 AM

McNulty

@ Corey

The question she asked was "Who drove?" That's the one he didn't answer.

It was either him (drunk driving) or as we now know it could have been Lisi.

But her initial question was valid.

January 22, 2014 @ 7:36 AM

Luigi

Strategic voting? Basically, you're just going to vote for whoever you think will beat the guy you don't like without doing any research on what you get if the other one wins.
How is that a good idea?
Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I was always told to read the platforms, examine the candidates and make a decision on what I think would work best based on that. My candidate hasn't always won, but at least I voted for something instead of against someone.

January 22, 2014 @ 8:25 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Luigi

Not always, but sometimes strategic voting makes sense.

In 2000, Gore would have beat Dubya had more people voted strategically.

The only way Ford will win in October is if we split our votes against him. If we all rally behind one sensible candidate, Ford can't win.

Chow is that candidate. Yes, she's an NDPer, but she's just one vote on council and her greatest strength will be getting council to reach consensus and progress forward... which also happens to be Ford's greatest weakness in a sea of weaknesses.

January 22, 2014 @ 8:38 AM

Argie

@Mike & Corey
Doolittle is to journalism what Ford is to class and discipline. They both fail miserably.

That said, if Ford stays out of trouble (except for the occasional hick-up) he will be re-elected. Having a clueless, hanger-on like Chow running against Ford will only help him.

If the goal is to not have Ford re-elected, you need a strong viable moderate to run. Thus far, there hasn't been anyone to fit the bill.

January 22, 2014 @ 8:45 AM

Ben Vidal

@ Corey: In this instance McNulty is correct. The question is "Who drove" much like everything else in Ford's world he won't answer questions honestly. Chances are in a month he'll say that Doolittle or the media didn't ask the right questions and blame them for why he lied.

It is however true Mike's insinuation or innuendo could very well be taken the same as what Ford said about Dale. Of course the main difference in this situation is that Ford has continually been drunk in public and in the past never ever used a personal driver. I could go into details about the surveillance and the criticism police received for never busting Ford after drinking in parks, but that's neither here nor there.

Dale was outside of Ford's house on public property. Ford insinuated he was a ped. Later he had to apologize because he lied again. Dale does not have a history of surveilling peoples house's with the intent to stare at little children.

January 22, 2014 @ 8:56 AM

At the risk of sounding like a hardcore Ford Nation member, I have ask, what's the problem? He was drunk in a restaurant! Go to any licensed pub or restaurant, and you'll find a few drunk buggers making an ass of themselves.

I don't care if he's the mayor or not - and according to our useless Premier, he's not the official mayor anyway. Its also been suggested the restaurant was closed, thus making it a private party. In other words, its like you or me getting hammered at a house party. I'm sure its happened to most of us, no?

January 22, 2014 @ 10:09 AM

@Argie: Really that's your defense? Or as usual it's a defense and deflection tactic to the premier to obfuscate the issue.

I don't care if people get drunk and go to a restaurant. I'm guilty of that. However, I don't sit there calling fellow workers or in Ford's case fellow government employees cocksuckers. I never ever drive after having more than one drink. If I'm asked how I got to a place or who drove me I wouldn't hesitate to tell someone.

Outside of being extremely hung over and claiming to my close friends I'll never drink that hard again, I never make the claim I've stopped drinking, mainly because I don't like to be known as a liar, but also because I don't enjoy hypocrites.

As for the restaurant being closed therefore it's a private party, that's a weak defense at best. Having worked in restaurants if someone shows up 5 minutes before close you serve them. Then lock the doors so no one else comes in, and allow the patron to finish the meal let them out when they are done and re-lock the doors. So the restaurant could be officially closed while someone is still finishing off a meal.

I will state. I didn't give a rats ass about the last video where Ford was on something ranting and raving like Hulk Hogan in the comfort of someone's home. That doesn't bother me and I hold no opinion on it, other than it's just another feather in Ford's embarrassing hat.

I'm sure we've gone over this before but I don't have a problem with Ford being a drunken idiot. It certainly would influence who vote for but it should not mean that he has to be removed from office.

I would have a much bigger problem with Wynne or Harper in regards to their respective scandals if it comes out they did in fact lie as most believe they did (Wynne with the gas plan closures and Harper with authorizing the paying of Duffy's fine). Those are both indictable offenses which fall under the category of corruption. Ford has yet to do anything that fits that bill. Yes, he's embarrassing, a pig, and even worse but there's no corruption.

This is why I continue to defend him against the hysterical mob of haters. Carry on, nothing to see here.

I don't know if my trainer won last night or not. I don't see him until tomorrow and he didn't tell me if he won or not. Sure wish he was in Provincials. It would mean another week of no workouts though, but at least I would be excited about Provincials. That was so wonderful my trainer beating Glenn Howard on February 7, 2013. Those who continually criticize Ford for his missteps are the same bunch that continually vote in a corrupt Liberal government at the provincial level. Apples and Oranges right? Can't compare the two. A fallback argument for Ford supporters.
Outside the 416, we look at Toronto voters with the same disdain that they reserve for Mister Ford. With all of the evidence inept management of the public purse, the lies, the deceit, Toronto voters continue to support the Liberals. Ford Nation would be the inevitable result of a frustrated constituency whose votes are negated by the left whose blind allegiance to the Liberals at the provincial level is mind-blowing.
It would be wise to try and understand the causes of the Ford Nation phenomenon than simply dismissing that demographic as stupid.
Torontarded was a term Rick Mercer introduced to the Canadian lexicon on his show a few weeks back.
An apt descriptor is there ever was one.
The Toronotarded vs Ford Nation. To the victor the spoils, and to the rest of us, a front row seat to this tawdry soap opera. God help me, I can't look away

Since Rob Ford reneged on his promise to quit drinking, it got me thinking about his other pledge to lose weight. The Ford Bros. have been claiming that Rob has lost 40lbs over the past 2 months. Since Doug stated that the Steak Queen video must be old because Rob looked heavy in it, when in fact it was recent, the whole 40lb. claim is now in question. I'm genuinely curious, did anyone ever notice a difference in Ford's appearance over these past two months? I know I didn't.

@Corey: You realize anyone on the left who comments on Ford and his weightloss or weight problem are immediately called weasels and not giving him a chance.

I can tell you from frequenting the gym and having been around people losing weight that 40lbs is a lot to lose in two months. If you are overweight and pushing lets say 400lbs it is easier to lose weight than someone who is 170lbs. That said dropping 40lbs requires a considerable amount of effort and dedication, not just to working out, but to food consumption and overall life style. 40lbs is a considerable amount of weight to lose.

In Fords case that would mean at least 10% of his weight. It would be very noticeable around his face and neck and would show a a bit in his mid section. Not a fair comparison, but if I dropped 40lbs that would be approximately 25% of my current weight and I would look like Christain Bale in the machinist if I didn't that.

if I did that.

Also healthy weightloss is seen in people at rate of 1 -2 lbs per week.

I lost 40 lbs a couple of years ago.

Went from 185 lbs to 145 lbs. Now I maintain about 150 lbs.

@ Mike: Yes but in how many months did you lose that.

@ Mike: So doing the work back it was just about 1.5lbs a week you lost. Which is in line with healthy weight loss. Now for a guy Ford's size I'm sure the loss would be much quicker, but I don't believe it to be hovering around 5+ lbs a week. Especially with his track record on commitment to weight loss.

Either way if he's lost that much then good for him. If he hasn't and he's lying then I wouldn't be surprised,

Well, the Pens beat my Habs badly last night 5 to 1. It was awful. My Coyotes also lost, but my Suns won. I do not like Crosby. I don't like him or the Pens. The Pens are my second most hated team. The only time I would ever cheer for them is if they play the Leafs. My trainer did lose on Tuesday. Morrison beat them. No good. They are in the middle of the pile meaning that they have to win two out of four more games to make the playoffs. They should have beaten Morrison. They're not very good.
