First.
Ford's still a fool.
Mandela is dead.
Leafs won.
Sound of Music is over.
Paris Hilton is a genius.

@Anon
I like your brevity.

Bernier was great.
Ford is still the mayor.
Wynne is still the Premier.
Harper is still the PM.
Must start my Christmas shopping.

So, being an online virgin buyer, I decided to jump in. I needed a new carving knife, know exactly what I want, brand, model number. I went to a local mall with all the Black Friday weekend sales on Sunday and found the best price on what I wanted for $149.99 on sale for just a carving knife alone.

So, I go home and start surfing…I find the exact model knife, includes the same brand Chef Knife and Paring Knife for $107.83, taxes in delivered to my door. I ordered it Sunday night, received it Wednesday.

I think I am going to be a converted online shopper.

I get to go home tomorrow finally. Looking forward to some downtime and letting the body re-cooperate after being gone for so long. However, the invoicing has been TREEmendous!!!

For those who are looking to have a chuckle on a Friday afternoon, here's a great piece on The Roar of the Rings.

My favourite parts of these Open Mikes are when someone asks a lifehack question pertaining to the GTA and many people answer.

Here's my question...

What's your grocery store of choice and why?

December 6, 2013 @ 10:22 AM

markosaar

Where did you purchase from?

My comment was directed at 4x4 Time if it wasn't obvious. Wasn't expecting three simultaneous posts.

My grocery store of choice is Longos. Why? Pure laziness. I live over one.

My grocery store of choice is No Frills.

It's a great deal less expensive than Loblaws and I get my President's Choice and Blue Menu products while using my PC MasterCard and scoring free groceries!

December 6, 2013 @ 10:27 AM

Corey

Grocery store of choice would Loblaws. I find they have the largest selection of quality goods outside of specialty/gourmet places. The drawback is they are usually much more expensive for almost anything. Second up would be Longos. No Frills - the wife goes there because she's frugal, but I won't go. Stinky, usually dirty. Undersized, warty produce and giant cardboard boxes cut open holding the merchandise...ugh.

December 6, 2013 @ 10:30 AM

Argie

Longos by a mile!
Great service, great selection and free plastic bags (that you can use again). Not like the other bags that your stuff falls through.

Also, they always have enough cashiers working so the wait is never as long as the other stores.

Reusable bags. Bah. Another source of contention in my household. My wife has a million of them, but every single time I go shopping by myself, I forget them. I hate them anyway. I'd like to see a study of what the real impact of these vectors for bacteria really are. They have to be manufactured, you either wash them frequently, or you're spreading nasty germs all over the place. Washing takes energy, uses water, and requires detergents. A plastic bag is clean, often made from recycled material, and can be reused as garbage bags instead of buying more plastic bags specifically for garbage, or recycled again. What's the problem?

December 6, 2013 @ 10:48 AM

Cheryl

Well, how about those Habs. Great game. It was close, but winning 2 to 1. A boston player got injured though at the beginning of the game. He had to be put on a stretcher. Even though he's from the opposing team, this sucks. It's not good when all of a sudden something like this happens. too bad the Leafs won. They just got lucky, that's all. My Coyotes and Suns will win tonight. Well, my grocery store of choice, well, actually because they deliver is Grocery Gateway. I must admit that they really have improved. I'm not getting as many missing items or anything. The thing is don't call them because you can be put on hold forever, so I don't call them unless I can avoid it.

I LOVE online Christmas shopping.

The convenience of shopping from home with a glass of Scotch in hand and my stuff quickly delivered free of charge to my front door. I get cash back on my cred card purchases plus on certain sites I get Airmiles as well. No crowds, no lineups, no knifings.
How did we ever manage before?

Morning All!

Online shopping is THE BEST! Bought a number of books from Chapters a few weeks ago and each book was far cheaper online than in store. Talk about blowing up your business model. Free delivery, too. Came home a few days later and there they were, all piled up in the back porch.

As for grocery stores, LOVE Trader Joe's in the States - I get down there every month. Whole Foods, too. Longos is great - the one in Aurora is excellent.

Was at Sherway the other day. Waited patiently for a parking spot that an old f'er proceeded to steal the moment the woman pulled away. We had some serious words - most of them swears. He saw me waiting and just said, with a shrug, that 'it sucks to suck'. Just not nice. I still can't believe that happened. There's no way I could ever do that. A guy who saw the whole thing go down offered to kick the guy's ass. That did make me feel better. What's the deal with humanity?

Hey Boon - what's happened on the podcast front? Sweet Rosie on strike?

I shop at Superstore (part of the Loblaw chain) for the same reasons Mike does.

Hey Mike, the PC credit card gets you points regardless of where you use it, right? I have one but I'm not a big shopper. Been thinking about putting my utility bills on auto pay then just moving the money over if it gets me points.

December 6, 2013 @ 4:29 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Blind Dave

Yes. Use the card anywhere (I have a black one to get me more points) and you get PC points I use toward groceries.

Just today I had to buy $22 worth of stuff and only paid $2.

December 6, 2013 @ 4:31 PM

markosaar

I've only used PC Financial banking for twelve years, and have their credit card as well, with the 2% loyalty bonus. I didn't live near any Loblaws stores for years and when I finally made it to the Maple Leaf Gardens one, I discovered I had $600 grocery money.

I had mostly switched to MBNA which offered 3% on groceries and gas, but that one apparently has a spending cap now after being taken over by TD.

Did you guys happen to come across the Pick-up Artist kerfuffle centred around the Eaton Centre today?

I believe it started out on Reddit yesterday:
LINK

I want to see if anyone else, particularly women, has experienced this.

A few weeks ago, I was in the area in front of Forever 21 when a man approached me. Very boldly he said "you're so beautiful, where are you going today? What's your name? I'd like to get to know you more, can we shop together?" I was a little taken aback, he was so forward and way too curious for my comfort. It seemed like a pitch almost, and not genuine. After some small talk, I went on my way.

Not even 15 minutes later, a second man approached me in the same area, and said pretty much the exact same thing! I asked him if I was being pranked, as this had happened to me earlier. He said no, he didn't know the other guy, and continued to ask me where I was going, what I was looking for etc. He was way too curious and hard to get rid of, just like the other man. I got a little spooked and went home.

Fast forward to today. I'm in the same area as before, in front of Forever 21 when another man approaches me. And he has the same little speech! "Hi beautiful, where are you going today, what are you looking for, can I join, blah blah blah." I was so weirded out, and politely shook him off. Ten minutes later, I spot him giving the exact same speech to another young girl!

None of these guys seemed interested honestly, all three of them seemed like they were spewing a pitch to me. They were all around the same age, maybe mid-twenties. I feel like this is some sort of weird promotion or girl-snagging group, I have no idea. Has anyone else experienced this at the Eaton Centre? It's left me feeling very uncomfortable going there on my own.

Commenters quickly figured out that they were probably PUAs.

They had another "event" planned for today, but they suddenly attracted so much negative publicity, they deleted it. I archived it to my hosting for posterity:
http://greycellgreen.net/files/meetup.html

Set your doubts aside for a session filled with fast paced adrenaline pumping approach action!

For those familiar with the term, we will be "beasting" (aka entering BEAST MODE). Defined along the lines of approaching continuously and consistently - targeting every approachable set in the vicinity.

Some testimony from fellow PUAs who have attended my events either through my website or through meetup:

"Junaid has given me the confidence to approach without stressing about how it will turn out. At the beginning I would be in my head a lot. After training with him I found myself closing numbers every time I went to the mall. I always make a point of going to his events and encourage others to try him out" - Alex G from Mississauga

"Had issues with escalation and could never get a girl to come out with me on a date. Junaid walked me through the steps he uses to get the lay and guided me on how to use them in my approach. I can happily say I have taken 3 girls out on dates in the past month and even managed to pull one back to my place. Thank you Junaid. I know the best is still to come" - Pablo L from Toronto

"Easy to understand. Simple to follow. The guy is experienced, modest and down to earth. Two thumbs up - carry on doing what you do" - Chris T from Scarborough

Event starts at 5PM sharp. $5 gets you in on the action. Queen St Entrance to Eaton Center between Town Shoes & Oakley (inside the mall)

Game on

Someone forwarded it to Eaton Centre management and they tweeted:
https://twitter.com/toeatoncentre/status/409049060775981056

We have been alerted to a Pick Up Artists (PUA) meet up at 5pm. Rest assured security is briefed & your health & safety are our top priority

@Mike: For the love of God, don't implement Disqus. In short, it's a horrific piece of shit.

In long:
- You instantly lose control of the data. Remember last week when I asked how many '%Ford%' comments you had? Want to do it under Disqus? TOO BAD GO TO HELL!

- You lose control of the software. Right now you can do neat things like "Only 51 comments...", or change the font, or anything else UI. Want to do it under Disques? EAT A LOG YOU WILL LIKE IT!

- Like that fast response time your site has now, because it's all returned in a single request from torontomike.com? Disqus loads everything from a janky overloaded CDN, so that nice fast blog you used to have-- HAHAHAHAH GO LICK A SNAIL!

- Not to mention that Disqus is 100% javascript based. If javascript is disabled or blocked, and Disqus cannot run it's slow-as-molasses horribly written missing-the-point-of-HTML code? STUFF A QTIP INTO YOUR BRAIN JAVASCRIPT RULES!

- Like how you're in control of your bog right now? With Disqus, you can now worry about a 3rd party you have no control over randomly injecting malicious content because they were hacked. SECURITY JUST HOPE AND PRAY!

- At this exact moment, name a single company that, if they went out of business, would take out your blog and a large chunk of its content. Go ahead. Name one. MAYBE if your host went under, you'd lose all but a day of backups. Maybe. Now, with Disqus, you are entirely dependent on a 3rd-party, for profit company keeping your blog running properly and contiguously. SERVICE LEVEL AGREEMENT WHATS THAT?

- And finally, and most importantly-- that for-profit business I mentioned. Yeah, YOU ARE NOT THEIR CUSTOMER. You are not paying their bills. You know who pays them? Skeevy third party marketers and advertisers doing questionable things with OUR personal information. And OUR, I mean me and your commenters. Disqus uses questionable tactics to track users across multiple domains, under the guise of "single signon". They track browsing habits, mine data and comments for demographic information, package it and sell it to people looking to make a buck of our information. If you pick Disqus, you will be selling us out to a third party who does not have our best interests in mind. I would describe them as HOSTILE and MALICIOUS and UNTRUSTED.

I can't speak for everyone, but if you switch to Disqus or any other 3rd party comment-system, I won't be commenting anymore. I have Disqus and other privacy-invading marketing companies blocked by default, and as much as I love your blog, I won't be willing to make an exception.

December 6, 2013 @ 10:21 PM

@Blind Dave: You don't get any extra points from the black card. The "extra" points are just a wording trick. You always get 10 points from PC + 10 points per dollar spent, even with the grey card. The other benefits are just other things you already got from just having a card-- like product protection, a customer service phone number, etc.

The one and only reason they've been forcing those black cards on people? They're technically "premium" World cards. Which means merchants pay a higher fee to accept them.

They upgraded me without giving me any choice. Just cancelled my grey card and shipped me a new one. I gave them hell over it, because I have lots of pre-auth payments on my CC-- and had to scramble to change the number before I lost out on subscriptions or got hit with NSF fees. I was a step away from just cancelling it, and told them I would if they didn't throw a bunch of PC points my way.

Longos is my store, friendly staff, fresh produce, not an over sized store so I can be in and out in quick fashion. Probably paying a higher cost for this but worth it to me.
My 19 year old daughter goes to U of Guelph at the Humber Campus, and this PUA crap seems to be prevalent in her neighbour hood. Aggressive guys trying to pick her up while walking or shopping, far more than she ever experienced in our area. These guys are scary enough that she is actually thinking of carrying pepper spray.

Forgot I was going to vent on the Pearson Airport security checks: Since this is a federally mandated search that every citizen has to be put through, I finally have had enough of standing in line like a good Canadian and watching American Express, or Nexus card holders skip the line. I don't care what happens at the gate for Air Canada Elite, etc. members, totally different matter, but after enduring almost 50 minutes in line last Sunday flying out, I was getting into a really pissy mood watching this taking place.
Going to fire off a useless letter to Lisa Raitt my MP and the GTAA, but it will make me feel good.

December 7, 2013 @ 9:18 AM

Lorne

@Mike: Yeah, the PC card is usually great. I've never understood credit cards that charge fees. Seems like an antiquated idea. It's just this black card thing-- it's their first move that seems kinda slimy. It's left a bad taste in my mouth, given how HARD they were pushing it on people, and how every PC person and piece of PC literature I read was trying to sell it using half truths.

When I first spoke to them, if they had just said "We're basically changing how PC and our merchants interact, and so we're upgrading everyone's card to the new program. Sorry for the inconvenience." Fine, would have been cool. But then they would lie right to my face (phone face?). "With our exciting new card, you can earn double the PC points-- 10 points for every dollar spent at Loblaws, plus 10 points for every dollar on your balance."

Exactly how the program now and always worked.

"You get a priority 800 number for customer service." You mean the number I'm calling right now-- that is the same number on the back of the grey card-- that has no way of letting me indicate I'm a Black Card holder-- and thus I still waited 1/2 hour to talk to a person. JUST LIKE I ALWAYS DID?

"You get product protection." Under the exact same terms, conditions and lengths offered by the grey card.

And it went on and on. That's what bugged me. Yes, it is technically true I get all those benefits. But I already got them, so they're nothing new. They are not a benefit of "upgrading". That's like saying "Well, Mr. Boon, if you start PAYING for our new Oxygen Plus program, you'll get to breath air that is 20.95% oxygen!" :|

So, like I said-- very bad experience, and the only reason I'm still with PC is because they do offer a good product and had managed to build up some long-term good will. But if even me-- someone who LOVES the PC brand-- has earned 2+ million points-- shops almost exclusively at their stores-- hell, tried out TWICE for Recipe to Riches-- can be pushed to the point of leaving by being lied to-- I'd hate to think how many customers they did lose over this.

She looks at her screen and starts, "Um, two thousand...one..." then gives up and just reads the numbers to him, "You have 2-1-9-3-6. I don't know how to read numbers." She wan't embarrassed about it, just matter of fact, like it was perfectly reasonable that a high school aged person wouldn't know how to "read numbers". Sheesh. What are they teaching kids now?

Anyone watch the MLS Cup final today? As someone who would not normally watch soccer, I have to say it was very entertaining. The game ended in round 10 of penalty kicks.

Well, how about those Habs. They won. That's great. Unfortunately the Leafs won though in a shootout. they just got lucky. The Leafs will lose tonight. My Cardinals will win today over the Rams. It will happen. Hey, my birthday is on Thursday, December 12. If you like, you can send me birthday messages. I would like that.

Well, my Cardinals won. That's great. They beat the Rams. Cardinals will hopefully make it to the Superbowl. That would be a good thing. So far the Leafs are losing. Good. My Habs will win on Tuesday.

This is maddening: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ontario-mom-urges-schools-to-let-asthmatic-kids-carry-puffers-1.2455861

In short, a 12 year old asthmatic boy died last year because his puffer was locked away in the principal's office, as per school policy.

I haven't seen anyone explain WHY that was the policy. It's utterly insane. What about kids with epi-pens?

That story about the inhaler is difficult to believe. I have no words...

Looks like Canadians aren't as prolific at online shopping as some would have us believe

http://o.canada.com/business/canadian-e-commerce-slowing

I personally think Canadians are tired of being gouged by Canadian retailers in general and online retailers for their shipping and "handling" fees, so we shop far more informed than others. Quite often you can get the same or better deal at bricks and mortars if you show them the online deal.

@Cheryl, I'll wish you an early HAPPY BIRTHDAY! as I will most likely forget or be otherwise occupied on Thursday. It is also my Brother in Law and one of my best friends Birthday's Thursday as well. Mine was on Sunday. 95% of my family has birthdays between Nov 11 and Feb 2. I have a big family too.

Between family, friends and neighbours, I know someone's birthday for every day of December!
