Hey folks,

Taking a step back from talking about the Ford travesty to address a potential local business closing down in my area. As most of you know Cineplex has a monopoly on the theatre visit business across Canada. With over 70% of the market share, they literally have the power to destroy small independent theaters. Out in Oakville we have a theater called Encore Cinemas. The building itself was a Cineplex originally but they closed it down back when they started opening Silver City's and theaters with more than 5 screens.

This theatre isn't by any stretch updated and modern, but it is nice and quaint. They have some of the best popcorn around and the cheapest. Their cinemas are small so you feel closer to the movie. The staff care about the actual event of going to the movies. Lastly but most importantly the prices won't make you re-mortgage your house. Regular seats $8.50 and Tuesdays you can see a movie for 5 bucks.

So now on to the problem. All theaters have to change over to digital projection (D-Cinemas) from the current 35MM. Problem is they cost 300K. This little theater only has one of the newer Digital Projectors, so you can see the price tag to convert.

If there is a big benefactor out there who loves movies as much as I do and has some cash to help support a local business visit film.ca to find out how.

Just to clarify I have no actual stake in the theater other than I love to see movies there.

Outside of that I hope everyone is having a great Friday.

@ Mike - I heard that call live last night....clearly Ford

November 1, 2013 @ 9:19 AM

Argie

sarcasm opened.....Gee I was hoping the Star's website would have provided more coverage of yesterday's events. They seem to have completely ignored it......sarcasm closed

So, has anyone heard any new CDs lately???

It's Movember !! I have been asked to participate this year - not thinking that I could stand having an ugly old mustache for a month, I decided the cause outweighs my reservations !! Please donate !!

On another note, lovin' the leafs being up top - As a long suffering fan, I can't help but feel the collapse is coming ! Hope I'm wrong!

Yet it was the good ol' paper that grew... The Toronto Sun that put out the special free afternoon issue for the first time since 9/11.

This is a massive local story and all four papers jumped on it, as they should.

@Toronto Mike

How was trick or treating last night?

November 1, 2013 @ 9:31 AM

Blind Dave

- Oh god, I ate too much of my own candy on Halloween. I look pregnant this morning.

- According to Daniel Dale on twitter, "Doug Ford calls for the video to be released, suggests that Rob Ford might not have remembered (!) or known (!) about a video being taken".

- Wrote a finance exam and a management exam this past week. Still clearing my head.

- I get my granddaughter tonight. Yay!

- Also have to hit the bbq this weekend and put some stuff in the freezer. Time to do it comfortably is running out.

@Banger

Awesome. Nice warm weather and my daughter brought a couple of friends. We were out there for about 90 minutes.... I was just getting warmed up but she was done after she filled her second bag.

@Rick2

I have a trimmer / edger / shaver to give away later this month... the Movember folks will dig it. It's from Gillette. More on that in a couple of weeks.

And yes, loving the Leafs lately... Go Leafs!

November 1, 2013 @ 9:34 AM

Argie

@ Mike
True but that's just the Sun being balanced. They also love any scandal.

As for the Star, where was their wall-to-wall coverage during the $1 Billion gas plant scandal? How about the other billion dollar eff up, e-health? Oh and the quickly forgotten ORGNE billion dollar loss?

Yes, they covered those stories but certainly not with the vigor they gave this story. You have to admit that.

November 1, 2013 @ 9:38 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Argie

This story is more local... and more sensational... all papers in Toronto will cover it more because it will sell more papers.

November 1, 2013 @ 9:40 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie - I was listening to 640 last night to follow this story. Every Ford supporter who called in immediately tried to change the subject to the Libs gas plant and ORGNE stuff. That is so weak...can't defend the actions of your guy, so lets just switch the focus.

The issue right now is that the Mayor of Toronto Smokes Crack, associates (and writes reference letters for) known criminals, and LIES every time he is asked a question.

Please try to stick to the subject at hand.

November 1, 2013 @ 9:43 AM

Argie

@Phil
I wasn't saying "oh the liberals store billions from us so what Ford did is nothing..."

I was critiquing the way the Star is covering this and how they barely mentioned the billion dollar scandals.

November 1, 2013 @ 9:47 AM

Lyle Lanley

When the Ford supporters start pointing at how the Star covers other unrelated events you know the battle has been won.

November 1, 2013 @ 9:51 AM

Nigel Trousershrapnel

@ Mississauga Phil,
The only thing that has changed in the Ford lexicon is that instead of alleged, the media is now using apparently.
Not one media outlet has come out and stated that the mayor smokes crack.
Apparently (tee hee) you have better sources that allow you to make that statement.

November 1, 2013 @ 9:53 AM

Argie

Yes, Lyle you won the battle. You fought hard and courageous but you prevailed. Congrats, old boy!

November 1, 2013 @ 9:54 AM

markosaar

@Argie, re: ORNGE --

It's the Star that blew that one open in the first place.

The problem with Ford is that he went after the Star and tried to claim it was a conspiracy against him. He and his brother railed against the paper and its journalists regularly blaming them for everything (also completely ignoring that it was Gawker that broke the whole story).

November 1, 2013 @ 10:00 AM

Nigel Trousershrapnel

@Lyle Lanley
Not a Ford supporter per se, and I do admit it's like watching a train wreck in slow motion.
But there are no charges against Ford that I am aware of at this point. Perhaps you'd care to debate those of us who feel he deserves due process.

November 1, 2013 @ 10:05 AM

Argie

OK, who should now be mayor? And please don't say "anyone but Ford." Let's have names and why they should replace Ford.

November 1, 2013 @ 10:06 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Lyle - When the Cheif of Police comes out and says he has seen the video and it is consistent with what has been reported, that is political double speak for "yup..the video exists and he's smoking some crack in it"

November 1, 2013 @ 10:08 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Argie

Unfortunately for Toronto taxpayers, Rob Ford has no respect for us and will not resign. Therefore, he's got another year in office.

I'm not interested in speculating who should be our next mayor until we know who's running. I'll do so then.

In the meantime, we're stuck with this idiot liar. We deserve so much better...

November 1, 2013 @ 10:08 AM

Al Reda

And how about those Leafs!

November 1, 2013 @ 10:15 AM

Anon&on

@Ben Vidal That sounds like a kickstarter type project.

November 1, 2013 @ 10:17 AM

Argie

@ Phil
That's where Blair screwed up. His comment should have been "Yes, we have the video but at this time I cannot comment on it.."

As a result of his "disappointed" comment, we all know the content of the video (by putting 2 and 2 together). This will actually clear Ford of any criminal wrongdoing.

Obviously Ford's reputation is shot but many like yourself believed it was shot many years ago. Therefore, nothing has really changed. Like Mike wrote, "we're stuck with this idiot liar."

November 1, 2013 @ 10:22 AM

Nigel Trousershrapnel

@Mississauga Phil,
Funny how your interpretation of Blair's presser supports your bias against Rob Ford. SHOCKER!
Me, I'll wait until I see the video. I suspect that it will be of poor quality similar to those grainy videos that capture ghosts on OLN. Ford haters will see one thing, Ford supports another.
Nothing will change.

November 1, 2013 @ 10:22 AM

Lorne

@Ben: FYI, the direct link to the Indigogo campaign is: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/save-encore-cinemas

$8k / $100k when I checked.

It's kinda sad, but there's going to be a lot of these theatres closing. The drive-in in Newmarket just shut down for the same reason. The studios are insisting on upgrades to digital projectors, at a cost of $300k. Plus I suspect it also includes re-negotiating their distribution and ticket sale contracts. It's simply beyond the ability of smaller theatres of handle.

(Note, though, the Newmarket drive in did re-open after being bought out by one of the "bigger" drive-in players, who paid for the upgrade. But now it's no longer a family run business. No switching screens, way too strict about outside food-- half the fun is gone).

November 1, 2013 @ 10:26 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Lyle - I have no bias against Ford, I live in Mississauga (the only city in Ontario that runs at a surplus, not a deficit).

However, common sense says:

If it looks like a duck
and
Walks like a duck
and
Talks like a duck

...guess what: it's a FUCKING DUCK!!!!!

November 1, 2013 @ 10:38 AM

Nigel Trousershrapnel

How many ducks talk to you Phil?

November 1, 2013 @ 10:41 AM

Mississauga Phil

SOrry that last one should have been directed at Nigel not Lyle.

@ Nigel - Ducks go quack...you knew what I meant

November 1, 2013 @ 10:45 AM

Ben Vidal

@ Nigel: Really you need to see the video now? Come on that's pretty weak. So is the he has to be charged part for this to mean anything.

If the police chief corroborated the story, now you don't believe him?

This is the mentality of some people today. The "I don't care what the proof is but I have to see it. I being the professional and also judge whether or not the tape is real."

The fact that Lisi is associated with extortion for trying to retrieve the tape doesn't further add to this for you?

November 1, 2013 @ 10:47 AM

Argie

Dammit Nigel, I was just about to post the same thing.

November 1, 2013 @ 10:48 AM

Irv

@Nigel. Wow, how's life in the suburbs with circles around your trees? Ford won't be charged with smoking rock. What about the extortion charge on his right hand man? Did his right hand man do that all by his lonesome? Are you really that naive? Getting charged smoking a 20 stone might be the least of Ford's worries.

Are you all so civilian and naive to believe this is only about a fat guy smoking some rock? This is WAY BIGGER than that. I can tell just by TPS' actions that this is much bigger. When the hammer comes down you can bet some of his crew will start singing like a canary.

@Vidal: That projector problem is hitting a lot of indie cinemas. Sadly, I think a bunch of them won't make it. Piracy makes it a double whammy. The death of those places will really hit the entire industry too & that's too bad.

November 1, 2013 @ 10:51 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie & Nigel - The "If it looks like a duck" is one of the oldest "lets show some common sense" sayings we have in our culture. It doesn't surprise me that neither of you are familiar with it....supporters of Ford have shown for years that they have no common sense....

So, no gentlemen, ducks do not talk to me...I would have assumed in a blog full of Adults I would not have to explain a very old saying...but here we are...

November 1, 2013 @ 10:52 AM

Cheryl

Well, my coyotes won last night in a shootout. that's great, and my Habs will win tonight. Yes, the Leafs will fall. Believe me. Also my Suns will win tonight. My trainer's team plays two games today and two games tomorrow, and Sunday is the playoffs. They're going to win all of them. they're not going to lose a game this spiel. My Cardinals don't play this weekend. They have a bye. No Cardinals this weekend. George Smitherman should have been our mayor. I'm so sick of Ford. He should resign. He really should.

November 1, 2013 @ 11:03 AM

Nigel Trousershrapnel

@Irv,
Is "circles around your trees", some kind of biker slang? I don't understand the reference.
Can you tell me who he was charged with extorting? It might help me put this into perspective (apparently I'm not that bright).

@ Mississauga Phil,
It's "if it quacks like a duck". I just thought if you actually talked to ducks, it would explain some of your missives on this site. my bad.

November 1, 2013 @ 11:04 AM

Argie

@Phil
Yes, I had never heard of that expression. It reminds me of a few days ago, a work colleague said to me "when it rains, it pours". And I thought he was talking about the weather.

November 1, 2013 @ 11:07 AM

Mississauga Phil

Oh Nigel..I'm gonna let that one slide seeing as how your golden boy just fell flat on this pipe burned face...

November 1, 2013 @ 11:07 AM

You Ford defenders are missing the point.

This is no longer about a mayor who smokes crack and lies about it.

This is about Lisi and his relationship with Ford and their shady dealings.

This is much, much bigger than smoking crack.

November 1, 2013 @ 11:12 AM

Nigel Trousershrapnel

Oh Phil... he's not my golden boy. As Argie likes to say, I have no skin in this game.
Is Ford his worst enemy? Yes.
Is he guilty of something? Probably.
Will he be charged? Don't know.
When will I be convinced? When I have the whole story.
Call me stupid, gullible, or whatever adjective you need to feel better about yourself.
Me, I'm going to watch Dr. Doolittle, the original, not the Eddie Murphy abomination.

November 1, 2013 @ 11:28 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Nigel - I'm not about calling people names to feel better about myself. You were the one that started with "do ducks talk to you??"

November 1, 2013 @ 11:29 AM

Corey

Couple things:

@Nigel - if Blair said the video was consistent with what the media had reported, than the video is sharp and clear, it won't be grainy or blurry. iPhone takes HD quality video, which based on the reports, was what the vid was taken on.

@Mississuaga Phil: Mississauga isn't debt free as of last year. They've taken out a loan of $450 million, and will likely have to borrow more. They project a billion dollar deficit for infrastructure repairs and improvements over the next couple decades. Now that development opportunities are basically exhausted, the city can't rely on that to pay the bills. You can stop being so smug about that one now.

Also, "If it quacks like a duck..." may be an old adage, but it's a stupid one too. It's that kind of thinking that makes researchers and scientists crazy, and has handed innocent people the death penalty in more cases than one. I believe Ford was smoking crack, and other illegal activities, and I believe he should resign, but you can't convict someone on video evidence alone. You can't prove beyond reasonable doubt what was in that pipe.

November 1, 2013 @ 11:34 AM

Nigel Trousershrapnel

@ Mississauga Phil,
It was "how many ducks talk to you". Hate getting my stuff taken out of context. However, there is a difference between me asking a question and calling you a name.
But I digress, this seems to be turning into a pissing match and that is not my intention.
Yesterday somebody was waiting to hear from the "Ford supporters", and I took up the mantle regardless of the fact that I am not and should not be categorized as a Ford supporter.
Just waiting for a logical argument from the haters that doesn't include a dismissive insult.

November 1, 2013 @ 11:42 AM

Douglas

@Ben Vidal - The conversion from film to digital is going to be the end of some smaller, independent cinemas, who simply cannot afford the $300,000 per projector cost. The same applies to the remaining drive-ins. I saw my first movie ever at the 5 Drive-In on Ninth Line in Oakville, and several years ago was able to take my sons there so that they could experience a drive-in before they all disappear. They loved it, by the way. I hope that the nearly million-dollar bill that the "5" is in for is not that final straw. If anyone knows where the "5" is, you know the owner is sitting on millions of dollars of prime development land.

I didn't like Rob Ford's approach to policy, style or politics when he was a city councillor. Readers of this blog know that. He didn't have my vote in 2010, and he wasn't going to have my vote in 2014.

That aside, and I'm speaking to those who did vote for him in 2010 and would consider voting for him in 2014, this isn't about a guy smoking crack. This is about so much more now.

This is about a leader with no integrity, caught in his web of lies and lurking about like a criminal with something to hide.

This is about his relationship with Lisi, the influence of Lisi on the mayor of Toronto and their dealings together.

It's not just the optics of Lisi pushing illegal drugs on the mayor, it's the hundreds of phone calls and the charge of extortion. It's not just the lack of integrity, it's our mayor's involvement in criminal activity beyond drug use and dealing. It's about the pipe beating, the murders and everything else swirling around Ford and his skeevy friends.

It's about what the citizens of Toronto deserve. We deserve an intelligent, progressive mayor who makes good decisions and represents and inspires a city. We deserve far, far better than Mayor Ford and his web of lies.

November 1, 2013 @ 12:59 PM

Rosie

He lied. He has completely and thoroughly discredited himself. No reason to resign? His defiance is absolutely shocking to watch.

@ TO Mike,
Pipe beatings and murder?
I think you might be getting a bit ahead of the class.
Speculation is not proof. Rumour and innuendo add nothing to the conversation.

Let it play out and remember Harry Potter.

@Argie

Ok, that's your final warning with regards to your homophobia.

You keep applying negative connotations to terms like "pride loving".

Being gay is not a choice. This is Canada, where homosexuals have the same rights as hispanics and women. And yes, homosexuals can marry members of the same sex.

If you have an issue with homosexuals and those who support homosexuals, please take it to another blog.

November 1, 2013 @ 1:34 PM

Nigel Trousershrapnel

You could use Rosie's post to describe many civic, provincial and federal politicians. Again, defiance does not equal guilt.

November 1, 2013 @ 1:35 PM

November 1, 2013 @ 1:36 PM

Speaking of homophobes, Rob Ford needs to apologize to a bunch of people including Justin Trudeau for calling him a fag and all homosexuals for using that slur.

November 1, 2013 @ 1:48 PM

Argie

@Mike
How is "pride loving" a derogatory term? Seriously, I don't know what you're mean. That's worthy of banishment? Of all of the derogatory comments made here (many directed at me, personally) you have an issue with that. Stunning.

November 1, 2013 @ 1:50 PM

Ben Vidal

@ Nigel: I think you are being contrary for the sake of being contrary now. You still want more proof than what you've already seen, which is sad. Mike is right to point out all the garbage that is following Ford around or taking place with his inner circle. As robin at the star indicated on the radio yesterday there is much more to come. That's what most people refer to as icing on the cake.

The whole he hasn't been charged act is also tired and used up and makes you look simple. By that standard the provincial liberals aren't guilty of losing a single dollar of tax payers money, because they haven't been charged or convicted of anything. Everything that has been said to date is not valid, because I haven't seen the paper work.

As for looking for a logical argument from people, perhaps you should be looking for a logical argument from yourself.

@Argie: He's too busy to sue anyone, because he has to call into Carroll's show. This is another thing a guy who is innocent or wasn't lying would have sued everyone and their brother by now for what has been said. Libel and defamation of character lawsuits would be all over the place. Instead he treats it like all his other lies, I'll just deny it until I have to admit it. Perhaps Rob and Lance Armstrong all took the same university class on "Lie till you Die 101".

Pathetic(not you Argie, Ford and his Brother)

Which lets not let Dougie Ford off the hook. This is another consummate liar. "I've never seen Rob drink" was what he said a couple of months ago. Which was a gross lie. Now he's trying to call Blair out or insinuate he's politicking. What a disgusting a-hole. Lets see how much time Harper spends at BBQ's with the Fords in the future planning their triumvirate of right wing politics. Hudak's goose is cooked and the Fords are going up in smoke.

Congratulations to Kevin Dale, and to his chief and editor for backing Dale up. His editor paid him a huge compliment last night and I think he's well deserving of it.

November 1, 2013 @ 1:50 PM

Irv

@Nigel.

Wow, you truly are naive, aren't you. Are you that stupid you can't grasp the bigger picture here? Because it's absolutely normal behaviour for the mayor to be working "back alley" deals right? Those meetings on surveillance in dark areas were about Ford picking up his snail mail & the lunch he left at home right?

Do you understand anything about policing or surveillance? And we aren't talking about a cop dressed like a homeless bum sitting in an alley (yes they do that). We're talking about full out camera and AIR surveillance. You really think a police organization is going to go that length over a dude selling weed? In the world of LE, the "Chief" is like a general in the army. Blair is a seasoned cop and he's going to be very careful in what he says & what information is given to the public. He said what was on the video was CONSISTENT with what had been reported in the media. Those were words that were chosen very carefully AND likely run by TPS legal before being said.

As for the video. The file had been deleted from a hard drive & was likely recovered. It was recovered quickly and that tells me that the process wasn't overly difficult. In layman terms, this means it's very likely they recover most or all of the file. It'll be very clear. Secondly, whoever recovered this data on the drive knew what they were looking for. It was very likely they knew that computer had this file.

All that rambling aside, Ford said there was no video. What happened? And trust me d00d, WAY more is coming out of this. Ask the moderator of this forum. I've called it 100% the entire time.

November 1, 2013 @ 1:51 PM

Speysidephil

As Argie said Fords reputation was shot years ago to most on this blog, so nothing has really changed.
This is my perspective from what I have read and seen on the videos on T.V.

Mayor Ford needs to take a leave of absence, but first his actions shown in the videos I.e. Convenience store, parking lot in a park, liquor bottles and all his meetings with Lissi need to be fully explained. If he can't do that then he needs to resign immediately.

I fully support Ford as you all know, he obviously needs help or counselling and his family should get him that. He is a good man with good intentions.
I am disappointed in seeing these videos as it leaves many question to be asked, and leaves many doubts. But he is still innocent from a legal standpoint which seems lost on so many who write on this blog.
As for the alleged crack smoking video, yes alleged know one knows what was in this so called Pipe, so in effect he is innocent on that too. Bill Blair should be held accountable for his reference to Ford in his press conference, but I guess he already is as he would never get charges brought against Ford now.

So everyone take a break, lose the innuendos (drug mule), crack smoking, etc. if you weren't there you really don't know, but then again your minds were made up years ago right.

November 1, 2013 @ 1:53 PM

A retweet from TM that caught my eye

#Lisi alleged to have extorted Dixon Bloods members between May 16-18. May 16 is the night the Gawker/Star story broke>/b>

I almost snorted my coffee reading this. If this is true this guy attempted to extort one of the most dangerous gangs in Canada. These dudes have connections all over the country. This would be like Toronto Mike walking into the Hells Angels clubhouse wearing a Mongol's patch and then threatening the Club President & Sgt-at-Arms. Him doing this leads me to believe 1 of 2 things.

1. The guy is a fucking absolute idiot and rookie and is going to get a visit by both the baseball and the football team

2. He's got his own muscle behind him that makes him cocky enough to do that.

November 1, 2013 @ 1:57 PM

November 1, 2013 @ 2:00 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Mike - So Arige and Speyside are both being pretty reasonable in their comments regarding Ford. Correct me if I'm wrong gentlemen, but what I'm getting from both of you is effectively

"I'm waiting to see the actual proof, and if it is true, then get the guy out of office."

I can respect that.

I think Mike should give a 1 day lift to his ban on Dave W, just for entertainment purposes....I'd love to hear how Dave defends his hero.....Ian from Etobicoke,...I mean Rob Ford

November 1, 2013 @ 2:03 PM

markosaar

@Irv, re: timeline recovering the video.

Blair said that the file was recovered on Tuesday this week. It was found, deleted (by someone that doesn't know anything about how file systems work...), on a hard drive picked up in the Project Traveller raids on June 13.

But I still imagine it was a trivial recovery, just took a while to comb through all the evidence picked up. I think Blair also mentioned there was more than one video too.

November 1, 2013 @ 2:05 PM

Speysidephil

@miis. Phil

Not so much the proof but obviously important.
I would just like to hear from Ford and his explanation and to stop referring to I can't speak about stuff that is in court.
He hasn't been charged, he should be able to speak.

November 1, 2013 @ 2:14 PM

Nigel Trousershrapnel

Question for the group, the hive or whatever.
Someone is unfortunate enough (dumb enough) to walk into the G20 riots and is swept up by Officer Blair. He/she is arrested without cause, not given due process, held in a cage with 20 other unfortunates, then release 24-30 hours after the fact.

Is everybody okay with that?

Am I wrong in thinking that the left would be having a hissy fit over this egregious assault on this persons rights and the Canadian Constitution.
I find it hard to accept that one could be outraged by this, yet have no issue with the mayor being tried in the court of public opinion and the media.
Ya know Irv, maybe I am naive. I expected more from some of the more left leaning posters (posers) on this site.
The difference between my hypocrisy and liberal hypocrisy is that when I do it I know I'm being a hypocrite, while the left have actually fallen prey to their own fabricated illusions.

November 1, 2013 @ 2:27 PM

Argie

@Phil
It certainly looks bad for Ford. Like speyside said, an explanation from Ford would help his cause but I won't hold by breath for that. He owes the city and his supporters that much, at the very least.

Like I stated previously, I do enjoy the haters getting worked up about it though. Despite what happened yesterday, they still don't have satisfaction and won't until Ford resigns.

November 1, 2013 @ 2:32 PM

@ Argie: I truly don't care if he resigns. I'm glad the truth came out. That's it beginning, middle and end. He's lied enough and this time it was more about proving on a colossal scale how much of a liar he is.

I think the people of Toronto deserve better, he should resign, but if he doesn't let the next election decide. Hopefully by then people will wake up and he'll be gone.

@Ben -

Not that I'm hoping for this outcome, but I should point out that Democrat (gasp!) Marion Berry won two terms as Mayor of Washington DC, despite serving a jail term for crack cocaine, despite conflict of interest charges, and despite being a tax cheat. To this day he is an elected representative who wins elections overwhelmingly. The similarities are positively eerie.

November 1, 2013 @ 3:14 PM

Ben Vidal

@ Corey: Well aware of the Marion Berry story. I don't know if I would parallel the two stores. The difference being Berry knows how to deal with people and criticism Ford can't. He sulks or lashes out. Like I said let the people of Toronto decide, if he is never criminally charged. If they vote him in then they deserve what they get.

The minute you make this into a "left versus right" thing I just shrug you off as another robot partisan political scene whore.

As for the G20 comparison, please. You're comparing a bystander who simply doesn't have the brains to know when the leave a dangerous situation. The Ford files are far deeper than that. Excluding the die hard Ford cheerleaders, the average citizen doesn't buy a thing Ford says. He's been caught in outright lies.

And bud, you just wait because I can tell you this. More is coming. This will go down as the BIGGEST scandal in Toronto history.

But all that rambling aside, it's protocol for any person in a public & professional profession to at least step aside during something like this. That's protocol & Ford should follow it.

This is a left/right thing. Sure, there are some on the right and moderates who hate him but the hard left and many in the media have had it in for Ford from day 1.

You and some of the others here have complained about the GOP in the US wanting to derail Obie at all costs - the situation in Toronto is pretty much the same. And believe me, don't think the Unions aren't behind the push to rid the city of Ford. He's their public enemy #1.

Re: Marion Berry

Decorated civil rights activist backed by guys like Jesse Jackson. A black Democrat in a city where African American people accounted for over 50% of the population (until 2011). Marion was a black man who supported BLACK business & was public about it.

Further, if you know the history of crack you'd know that it hit blacks harder than any other race in the late 80s. Even Flava Flav of Public Enemy admitted to a serious crack addiction. So just maybe those black folks where willing to forgive Marion for his addiction given they were watching their own culture be taken down by rock.

Mr. Vidal has based his opinion on an incomplete story and is offended when challenged by those who feel more has to come out before they decide one way or another.
This is akin to going to a movie and leaving halfway through and claiming to be an expert on the film.

Again, not saying it's right, but despite other posters, who don't even live here yet claim to know what the majority of the Toronto public thinks, I hear the conversations of average citizens every day for 8 hours a week during a commute that is comprised of people from a wide demographic. When a Ford story breaks, I'm always amazed at the amount of support I hear.

November 1, 2013 @ 5:00 PM

Irv

@Corey

Wonder how many of those conversations you hear are from people who live in Toronto or live in the 905. The core of Toronto was anti Ford. The outer lying "suburbs" voted for Ford.

And given this only broke yesterday you'd have 2 hours of commute time to hear this (and perhaps today as it's 5:15 there). Update us in another week on the opinion of Ford.

PS. Generally those who voice their opinions on blogs are the fringe of either political side. They're the radicals of the left & right & they're usually biased morons or trolls. Same goes for people talking politics in a GO Train.

The rest of society that has opinions but says shit is where it really falls. When the bulk of the comments in PRO FORD papers are against him, you know it's over.

There's not much more that can be said.

Nigel will deny Ford has done anything wrong because the proof won't ever meet his criteria. In a few weeks/months the rest of the evidence will be released and it still won't be enough. Just wait. The phone transcripts will be clear enough but you're probably on the side that all the exchanges of packages and envelopes in remote areas and done like amatuer spies was just the trading of reference letters and BBQ recipes. Since we can't see the contents then we can't judge.

Most of Ford's fiscal polices were sound. The Subway issues aside, the rest was smart budgeting. But all of it is ruined by exaggerations and his lies.

Yes, Nigel, he lied about the video. He knew it existed. I doubt you'll ever agree he lied or even misled the public on it. Hell, Ford's biggest supporter, Jerry Agar admits he lied.
But carry on and think he's being attacked by the media and say that Miller was never under such scrutiny.

It's like the Obama birth issue. Fox News and other media followed the rumors of Obama's birth. They chased every lead and tried to find the stories. Why didn't they publish more? Because it wasn't true. There was no story.
The Star did the same thing with Ford's drug issues. The difference? The story was true.

November 1, 2013 @ 5:27 PM

Corey

Before we get too rosy on Marion Barry, let me explain why it's an apt comparison:

Rob Ford is frequently depicted as incompetent. Barry was so incompetent that Clinton had to resort to passing legislation that stripped Barry of his power, essentially reducing him to a figurehead.

Rod Ford is a drug addict. Barry was not only imprisoned for possession of crack, he was tested years later and found to have pot and coke in his blood. Spare me the "crack hit blacks harder". Probably true, but it's not a genetic compulsion that would force the Mayor of Washington DC to seek it out.

Rob Ford is accused of conflict of interest. Marion Barry was stripped of his position as Chair of Finance for awarding his girlfriend a lucrative contract, the funds from which were funnelled back to him.

Rob Ford is a homophobe. Marion Barry voted against Washington recognizing gay marriage.

Rob Ford is a racist. Just a year ago, Barry slurred Asian by stating they need to be prevented from opening their "dirty shops" and black businesses should be put up in their place.

Barry has consistantly and continually denied all wrong doing. He continues to enjoy huge popularity. How does anyone deny the similarities?

November 1, 2013 @ 5:28 PM

Nigel Trousershrapnel

@McNulty,
Didn't get the movie analogy huh?

Don't think I've ever denied he did anything wrong (again I hate it when somebody puts words in my mouth), but the lynch-mob mentality gets tired real fast.
All I've said that I need more to make an informed decision either way.
A closed mind is an empty mind my friend.
So let's agree to disagree.
Cooler heads will eventually prevail.
Ford's not resigning and city council is powerless to have him removed.
I couldn't give a shit either way, but the fact that he is in control of his own destiny (at least this term) as the mayor of Toronto, is driving his detractors insane. And that my friend is worth the price of admission.

November 1, 2013 @ 5:59 PM

@Irv: I think Corey meant that people would vote for Ford no matter what even after the initial allegations of crack smoking surfaced.

November 1, 2013 @ 6:38 PM

Irv

@Corey:

Crack hit the black community extremely hard. It had nothing to do with genetics, it was because crack was the perfect drug for those on a lower income. Unlike cocaine, crack was cheap. 10 bucks for a quick high is affordable to everyone.

Your comparison between Ford and Berry seems logical, but I don't think that's why Berry won. Berry is a black man, in a city where blacks are the majority. Berry was also very "pro black". That resonates well amongst a culture who has been repressed. You'll support your own, even if a drug addiction criminal than you will a culture that hung your from a tree while driving burning crosses into your front yard.

It's very much like natives in Canada. There are chiefs & leaders who are corrupt & first nations knows it. But they'd sooner deal with that devil than intervention by the "white guy" (you know, the ones who put their kids in school and did Mengele like nutritional tests on them)

Rob Ford doesn't have that kind of backing. He's a privileged white guy. It ain't the same.

I really have no idea whom I would or could vote for other than Rob or Doug Ford. Many of the other fiscal talkers and moderate progressives, still dwelling across our 44-person council never ran for the mayoralship last time. Why then vote for any of them now?
Fine enough, not the Fords, but that doesn't make all of the others any more appealing. Ditto for all of those sideline elite Smitherman endorers.

Baseball used to be quicker. During the 1994 strike, copies of old games from the 1980s and 1970s were televised. A lot of fans noticed how much slower the game had become. Slow as it is between pitches, it might be quicker than during the 1990s.

A politician that shops at No Frills over Sobeys? You've been watching too many made for TV drama's bud

What you want as a politician is a street saavy hustler. Sorry bud, but those type of people go on to accomplish something in their life. They're not interested in a public service job & why would they be?

Our political system is such because we make it that way. I know a politician. You know what his answer is when you question something? "You'll have your say in the next election". REALLY? Maybe we should do that in the workplace too? I'll do whatever I want for 4 years and then the rest of the staff can "vote" if they want to keep me. I'll post a video of me smoking some crack fucking a street walker & when HR comes to talk to me I will say "I gotta get back to my desk and take some calls".

The fix for this isn't easy but to start we need a mechanism to kick out politicians when they lie, cheat or abuse the system. You get fired. And as a politician you'll be forced to live like the citizens you represent. You'll ride on the bus with them. You'll live amongst them. Everything you do related to your position (not personal life though) will be public.

Oh and NO security. A 22 year old waitress has to take the bus home from work at 2 AM. She gets no security. So why should a politician? You can stand on a dangerous subway platform late at night. When you get a stalker you can do what the average woman has to do. Jump through hoops to get a restraining order & then get a "meh" when you call the cops. If you want a body guard, PAY for it yourself. Welcome to the world the REST of us live in. Oh and NO pension either. You get a set amount of RRSP's each year. When you're voted out, your gone & so are your benefits JUST LIKE THE REST OF US.

But the map is oversimplified just to exaggerate the disparity. If you get a bit more granular it's a different story.

That map suddenly swings it in Ford's favour -- you'll notice apparently no ward voted 40% in favour of Smitherman.

Just a note: if an "average citizen" was caught urinating in public, ESPECIALLY around a public school, they'd be arrested and branded by being put on the sex offender's list. That means you fail all background checks, cannot hold a public servant job, be in a public database, and anywhere you move, you must introduce yourself to your neighbors to inform them you're a sex offender.

Whatever the TPS are sitting on, it better be worth passing up this low hanging fruit.

@Lorne. You would not be put on the "sex offenders list" for getting caught pissing near a public school. That's an urban myth.

@Speyside: No media is saying it's a sex tape. Reddit ain't the media & neither is the link they connect too. Wild speculation is common online (as it is with criminal forums which I read daily). But there apparently is a second tape.

I will say one thing though. When you start living the type of life where you may have made some enemies, it becomes tit for tat. Anything Ford's adversaries have on him they'll be pulling it out now and having it shared. This is the part that gets interesting.

Me, I'm most interested in the TPS. Something doesn't add up here. TPS used large scale surveillance on a dude over weed possession & extorting a gangbanger? LOL. Real life ain't Criminal Minds. There is more to this. They're looking for something big.

November 2, 2013 @ 1:43 PM

Rick C in Oakville

Got to agree with Irv, a lot of police resources went into really a small street level dealer. Ford was once a TPS supporter, so maybe this is why some discretion was given and he wasn't charged. I still can't understand why the cops didn't pull over Ford and search his vehicle, when under surveillance, as they do with little street level dealers in Jane/Finch etc.? Possibly Blair knows something Ford has done that he can't nail him on legally but can sink him through the jury of public opinion.

Re: Rob Ford Sex Tape. The initial claim comes off a site called Urban Toronto. It was picked up by a Redditor & the post was shared.

One point I'd like to make about this. It's easy to say that it's not from a reliable source. The days of tipping off the media are long gone. When people want information put out there (legit or not) they use internet forums. The reasoning is simple. With some level of skill it's pretty easy to do so anonymously and likely not get caught. Unless the NSA or CSEC get involved it's likely that ground level LE have the time or resources to find you.

Always take what you read online with a grain of salt. But release places like Reddit are ground zero to release dirt on people.

@Rick C

I used to live in an area where there was a lot of street level prostitutes. When the heat was on, the girls would often stand at a bus stop. The casual passerby saw a girl waiting. The local residents, cops & johns knew the women were prostitutes. And the cops might catch a john picking up a girl and pull over the car (it happened frequently during stings). But the reality is no charges could be laid against the driver for picking up a hooker. The john could say "I was giving her a ride". LE knows what's happening but they can't actually do anything.

Well same for Rob Ford. If they caught Ford on video actually smoking rock it'll still be tough to get a conviction. A good lawyer will argue that there is no "proof" that substance in the pipe IS crack. Does the prosecution have proof that substance in that pipe was rock? The answer is no. Just like the prosecution would have no proof that the hooker across the street from me was a hooker. Sure, she wore a mini skirt, had clear heels & made eye contract with every lone male driver going by. Sure she got in those cars & then reappeared at the bus stop 10-20 minutes later to do it again. BUT..without PROOF of the act, she could legally argue she was just waiting for a bus and her friends stopped by to pick her up.

That's why all LE uses surveillance. They collect enough evidence to show, beyond a shadow of a doubt to a reasonable person, that you are involved in illegal activities.

Free advice to CQ.

Simplify, man. Nothing you write makes sense because you weigh down your points with unnecessary adjectives and non-sequiturs.

Why not just write this:

"I hope that this matter didn't take funds away from the Toronto Police who could have been manning daytime road construction sites, tasering (and sometimes shooting or beating to death) the innocent, and enjoying daytime bicycle tours!"

@Irv: public urination won't get you on the sex offender's list. It's when the cops/DA charge you with indecent exposure (especially if there are minors around), then yes, BAM, sex charge, omgchildren, The List.

Most of the cites I find are for American states, but Ontario law isn't too different:

@Lorne. We don't have a DA here (that's American lingo). The laws regarding sex offender lists are different in the USA than Canada. Canadian privacy laws demand such as our laws are stronger than in the USA.

The information in NSOR is not available to the public though I think Harper had wanted to change that. Some provinces do operate their own but my understanding is they can only list people living in the respective province. Not sure, but I'm sure Ontario has it's own.

re: "In the meantime, we're stuck with this idiot liar. We deserve so much better..."

I have always contended that we got exactly what we deserved. After the last 15+ years of absolutely useless politicians running this city (in to the ground), I have always stated that we got exactly what we deserved.

For clarity, I voted for Ford, if he and the same opponents were to run in an election again next month, I'd vote for him again. Hell, I'd donate to his campaign.

Until we actually get a decent candidate, this is EXACTLY what Toronto deserves.

@MississaugaPhil,

A simple google search shows that Brantford, London and Toronto are all in budget surpluses this year, I didn't go to the second page of results.

@Lorne, not being an arse here, but why would you, an individual with no financial connection to a failing business, want to put money in to the business, with no guarantee of a recovery and no opportunity to take a stake even if they did?

You would be far better off investing several hundred or even a few thousand in to a nice home theater and subscribing to Netflix and buying/*renting movies, etc... *You can rent through iTunes for example if there is no video rental place left near you. Investing in your self is way better than investing in a business that will not provide you any return.

If they can't make it, then maybe they are doing something wrong or their product is not desirable. Plus I don't discount the above suggestion with people simply pirating movies...

Apologies accepted, but not good enough!
As a staunch supporter, I want to know what you are apologizing for.
Are you apologizing for the kid you bullied in grade 5, for the drunk St. Paddy day party, the curious goings on at the convenience store with Mr. Lisi, the meeting at the park with liquor . Just what Mr. Ford?
Why ask for the release of a video that you know can't be released because it's evidence in a extortion trial.
I need answers to these questions not just a blanket apology given what's been going on in your life.
I will still support you but I will never defend you again unless you explain fully!

@ Phil: No he's the king of lying and deflecting. If I were Toronto I would be more enraged by what he said yesterday. That wasn't an apology for anything.

I used to have a girlfriend that when we fought I would just apologize just to have the argument drop. Half the time I didn't believe I should apologize and the other half I didn't know why we were arguing. i.e., apparently someone can get angry because you take the garbage out to slowly. So when I apologized for nothing or didn't mean it she would ask what I'm apologizing for. That's what Toronto should be asking instead he gave a finger to everyone again.

You should see his supporters slagging the SUN now, or saying the police chief is corrupt.

I've never seen anything like this, I guess when you put all your money on a lame horse you have to see it through.

Heard a bit of "the show". Thought to myself "how the hell does this guy have a talk show".

Then realized I was listening to it. And listening to it on 680 as they rebroadcast bits of it AS NEWS.

And realized that nearly everyone in Toronto, regardless of age, gender, income bracket or political leaning, was listening into this train wreck.

And I realized that the station directors at 1010 must literally be constantly jizzing in their pants when they realize that fact-- and that they can take it to their advertisers and demand 6.72 buttloads of money from them because of those demographics. (6.72 buttloads is, of course, the crossover point where both Imperial Buttloads and Metric Buttloads are equal (like -40 degrees).

So in the end, it's shameful for this show to be on the air-- but also shame on each and every one of us for enabling it.

On a completely different note, I gave Indie 88 an honest try and listened for the past few weeks and I must say that Andrew was dead-on, on his assessment. A predictable loop of artists and songs. It's very elitist to call someone out on their lies and sketchy behaviour.

And yeah, I can judge Ford for his drug use. I don't do drugs. I don't have clandestine meetings with criminals. I don't have a video of me smoking out of a glass pipe with known criminals and gang members. But somehow it is "out to get Ford" for asking to get a explanation for the behaviour.

November 4, 2013 @ 3:09 PM

@Phil
Um, yes. In fact one could argue what you do is worse. After all, you do it on a regular basis while its very possible Ford did this once. Hey, but who am I to judge?

November 4, 2013 @ 3:11 PM

Ben Vidal

@ McNulty: You can say it over and over but 90% of Ford supporters won't change their mind. You could catch Ford smoking crack hurry the crack off to have it analyzed have it come back 90% crack and 10% Ajax cleaner and his supporters would say see he's not dirty it's not pure crack so it's not bad.

The best part is that he isn't guilty because he hasn't been charged. That's awesome because we all know the banks and bankers in the US were responsible for greed and the housing melt down, yet there isn't a single one of them in jail at the moment. So that must mean they are innocent.

I guess all the people that think Ford isn't an elitist would overlook the fact that Ford has his own group of high priced lawyers on retainer. That's what most average joe's can afford.

Man of the people my ass.

There's a study out of Cambridge that details that it can be appetite surpressment but a very mild one. That mixed with booze and a love of food and a near endless supply of money makes a drug user like Ford (allegedly) stay fat.

The skinny crack addicts you refer to are usually homeless and broke and spend their money only on crack. Ford has boatloads of money.

@ Argie - No addictive properties to Pot. You're body does not go into withdrawal when you don't use it. If there's no room in my weekly budget for it, then I don't have any.

To quote Bob Sagat from Half Baked

"I used to suck dick for some coke. You ever suck dick for some pot? No?? I didn't think so"

Pot is wrongly classified as a "drug". Whether it should be legal or not is a discussion for another day, but the term "drug" implies some sort of pharmaceutical processing - YOu can't walk out into a cocaine field in Columbia, pick some off the plant and snort away. There is refinement involved, ditto for Heroine (poppies) Meth (god only knows what's in that shit)and pretty much every other substance we classify as a "drug"

Pot, on the other hand, is a plant...pick some of the bud, dry it out and smoke away...

Going into Sunday I wondered what Ford would do. I knew he wouldn't resign, because you need to have some honor to resign, resigning means you give yourself consequences for your actions, he would never do that. So I looked back to the most gutless & shameless personalities in modern history & guess what he would do. I guessed he would admit drinking and drug addiction and take a 4 month break (of course would come back after only two months to prove how awesome he is, he can kick the addiction habit in half the time folks!) He can admit the undeniable but still come back for enough time to do the only work he knows how to do. Campaign.

Even with that low of a bar, Ford found a way to slither under it, apologizing for everything, by only admitting to the things that were completely out (ie Danforth and St. Patrick day drinking) Nothing about hanging around drug dealers, nothing about drug taking, nothing about lying about a video. But gives the vague "Sorry for everything" that could cover for that. You can just feel the spoiled upbringing of a man-child who never had to take responsibility for anything.

I actually don't care if he resigns or not, of course for the city sake it would be for the best. But I have no expectation for him to do so, as he has no shame at all. The only way I can see that happening is if the national & international media start connecting Ford to his fishing buddy Harper, than maybe Harper will start pushing Ford to leave. Seriously I am shocked they haven't already but than again Harper & the Conservatives aren't the quickest to release an oversize anchor (see Duffy) but even with that I can see Ford being stubborn like Duffy and stay around.

@markosaar, I am a huge fan of numbers and stats, so your map caught my eye. You said that Ford won his wards with higher margin against Smitherman, then Smitherman won the downtownish wards against Ford, and that might be true. But that map doesn't take into consideration how many votes Pantalone took, which I would guess make a bigger difference in urban/central part of the city (where Smitherman won mostly) than the suburbs. I would guess the margin of win for Smitherman would be larger in the sections he won if he didn't have to share some "leftist" vote with Pantalone.
