I see the media party (CBC, The Star, the Globe & others) are using all of their resources to "get" Rob Ford on this arrest of his driver. They obviously believe in that old adage "if at first you don't succeed, try, try again to libel Rob Ford - something's bound to stick..."

Guilty by association, trial by supposition. Is this a great country or what?

Because the media is inventing all of the issues with Ford. Why didn't they go after Miller this way? Look at all of his friends that got arrested for drugs! Look at all the pictures of him with drug dealers! Look at his friends who tried to aquire a video of him smoking crack that didn't exist. Remember that time when Miller was drunk at that event? The media didn't report that!

That's right. Ford has nothing to do with the world of trouble that surrounds him.

And no, I didn't like Miller as mayor and I wouldn't want Smitherman either.

I agree a lot of it has been caused by Ford but its obvious, the usual media outlets always lead any kind of Ford story. Even the Sun has joined in lately.

Yes, Miller stayed out of trouble but he caused a lot more damage than Ford. He and his friend (another disaster) McGuinty went after and got the Pan Am games along with blowing taxpayers' money on other crazy schemes.

Everything is so politicized... the news out of the USA is all Democrat vs. Republican... almost everyone picks a side and is identified by it.

It's similar here... there are those who accept all of Ford's shit because he's their guy.

I'm waiting for Ford to make an announcement that the last three years have been a piece of performance art and to release a documentary at next years Hot Docs.

Considering everything that has happened, it is the only logical explanation.

October 4, 2013 @ 11:06 AM

Eye R Vee

@Argie

Your defense of Ford is because you're a support & you can't look at this rationally.

Rob Ford has been seen associating with known drug dealers including one who I believe is dead? He was arrested on weed charges in the USA and admits to using "lots" of weed. Now a known friend and ally has been charged with possession with the intent (to traffick). Given these circumstances it's only natural media might ask questions. And, be assured Argie, the TPS are also asking questions & investigating things. Police protocol is that they cannot and will not release any details into investigations until they've gone to trial.

Argie, you were the first guy to shit all over Jack Layton when he was allegedly found in a Asian massage parlour. If you recall Mr Layton was allegedly caught in a massage parlour in a state of undress. There was some question whether the business offered medical massage or the type that come with a happy ending. To my knowledge, Layton was not charged. The information apparently came from some old notebook that beat cops use to keep information.

Now, I recall the "right wing media" was all over that Argie and so were you. So you're all over a left wing politician because he was apparently in a massage parlour and MAY have been receiving sexual services. BUT..when a right wing politician is in the association of alleged drug dealers (and not a small racket either) it's a witch hunt?

Argie, any person in the business of surveillance or profiling would be asking questions. It's no different if you own a Harley & you frequently ride & attend functions put on by full patch Hells Angels. What would you opinion be of some dude, on a Hog, at a HA party, with a "I support the Red & White" shirt? Would you assume he's innocent? Would you assume he's just a hang around there for the corn & steaks? Or would you assume something else? Because it's NO different dude. The person I just mentioned very well may be innocent of all accusations just as Mr Ford might be. But, people draw conclusions based on the type of people you associate yourself with. If you're the mayor of the largest city in Canada, perhaps you should choose your friends a bit more wisely.

RANT - The Ontario Liberals giving MLSE (a wealthy, profitable company) $500,000 of our money to "secure the NBA All Star Game" is beyond ridiculous. It is welfare for the rich and arguably borders on criminal behavior for stealing tax payer dollars…We have to ignite our families and friends to get out and vote so we can at least try to stop government unions and special interest groups win elections for their puppets and continue allowing these thieves to run our government…
Just wait until all the real numbers come out on 2015 Pan Am Games...Time for an election...

I am not a fan of the Pan Am games but arguing over the minutia of $0.91 in parking is stupid. But that’s Ford’s game, complain about the gravy of a couple of teas but make a disaster of getting subways or dealing with the things that actually matter. He’s a talk-radio mayor. Bring up things that make people get angry….look at him! He makes $450 000 and expensed a sandwich! How dare he? And the people that make less will get upset and think the mayor is fighting for them. But he can shrug off $1 Billion for a subway and say “we will find the money” and never explain how.

As Mike said, it has become so polarized. I wish people wouldn’t be “left vs right” and keep drawing lines in the sand. People like Ford, the Tea Party, Mulcair and Hudak would make choices or prevent good policy from passing just to make a stand. They end up hurting the public more than helping. The defund Obamacare movement any costs is ridiculous. If they truly believe that the American people are behind their goal then the elections would show that. So far the American people have supported the ACA.

And Ford is following the same tradition. It’s easy to think you’re following the will of the people if you only listen to the people that agree with you and dismiss all of others as left wing nuts.

October 4, 2013 @ 11:16 AM

markosaar

It's not just "for a subway" -- it's for a stupid idiotic vote-buying subway (that the provincial Liberals are complicit in as well).

It's just completely ridiculous until something (major) is done to alleviate the Yonge line.

Is Argie a support as Eye R Vee states, Does 4X4 want me to ignite my family and friends? (seems a bit harsh, but I'm in)

October 4, 2013 @ 11:33 AM

Argie

Eye R Vee (aka Irv),
My only criticism of the Layton parlor story was how the left wing media covered it up. Only the Sun ran with it while the others never mentioned it. Can you imagine of Ford did the same??? The commentaries, stories, YouTube videos, the documentaries, etc...

I agree that Ford has brought a lot of this on himself and yeah, there's certainly a possibility that he's involved in some illegal activities. I'm not a blind Ford supporter - my issue is how the media party goes after him with all of their resources. A little consistency from them would be nice.

October 4, 2013 @ 11:38 AM

Eye R Vee

Well Argie, why no condemnation of "right wing media" coverups? I certainly don't see Sun Media commenting on Quebecor's support for public tax dollars for a Quebec City arena. In fact I regularly see bias in both left AND RIGHT wing media all the time.

As for "only the sun ran with it while the others never mentioned it". I just started up a program I use for information reconnaissance when I profile individuals. 32 seconds into the search I have at least 2 dozen hits from "left wing media" in Canada on the Layton thing. Is that "never mentioning it". Or did your own skewed mind simply want to imagine it was that way?

At the very least Rob Ford is just plain stupid for not understanding he's under the microscope. It comes with the job dude.

October 4, 2013 @ 11:47 AM

Ben Vidal

@ Mike: Congrats on the news.

@Argie: The problem is how Ford challenges the media at every turn. He insults them, goads them and then has the audacity to host that terrible thing he calls a show on Sundays.

Since he took over it has been a circus for Toronto. 99.9% of it he created himself. The media storm wouldn't be as bad if he knew how to behave.

As for the media scrum he had at the Esso station before he left for Texas. He literally answered nothing, said nothing and made himself look like a moron. Of course the center for rightwing broadcasting 1010 went straight into his defense. The terribly unfunny, unoriginal Mike Bullard was right there defending him.

This isn't a right vs left thing with Ford, this is idiocy vs. an ability to get work done.

@4x4 Time: Rob Ford is all aboard the NBA train too. This was both levels of government that went after that.

I'm more concerned about the additional $700 Million dollars spent for PanAm housing projects (and the large PanAm executive salaries), than a few under two dollars expense items.
Ditto for the CBC's report on Toronto city councillors getting submarket apartment rentals.

In other news, it's neat that Torstar's John Honderich referred to 'Perry Mason' this week when lecturing to Ryerson MBA students. The TV series for Mason also began in the fall of 1957. At least the reference was better than having the Torstar Chairman discussing business outsourcing and profitability.
Both Perry Mason and LiTB are currently carried by MeTV. LiTB was recently a part of Antenna TV's schedule earlier this year. TorStar's weekly TV listings exclude both over-the-air U.S. stations.

I understood the first half. The second half..Leave it to Beaver is on TV..I think that was the point?

And 1010 isn't always protecting Ford. Moore doesn't and Jim Richards goes back and forth.

The other hosts commonly skip by the issue and yell at the media for bothering Ford. I don't like them outside of his house, I think that should be off limits. That's where I agree with Ford. But it doesn't condone his actions or give him the right not to address the issue.

Hate to be a pest, but I want to jump into the liberal experience with both feet and I have a few issues that need to be reconciled.

1. Wardrobe
Are we still doing sweater vests? I ask because I'm not convinced I could pull off the sweater vest thing. Coming from the dark side I do have a number of collared shirts. I've buttoned them to the top, to go for the ironic look, but all it really does is make me look ethnic, which is cool, you know, more opportunities and such. Is there a liberal "look" that wouldn't look contrived on a middle-aged white guy?

2. The Ladies
If memory serves me correctly, the liberal arts majors in university attracted the, ah, how can I say this, the plus size ladies. Is this still the deal? I mean I like a bit of meat on the bone, like everybody else but there are limits.

3. Who do we hate?
Sorry, let me rephrase that, who do we hold in contempt?
Coming from the right, the answer to this was clear cut.. we hated everything. From what I've read here and elsewhere, we disapprove of Rob Ford, I mean how can we not! I just hope he gets the help that he so desperately needs! Oh yeah, and cars. We dislike cars! And the oil sands. We loathe the oil sands.
Is there a comprehensive list somewhere?

I see The Star's Chris Hume is at it again today. I swear I read this hack due to some deep seated masochistic tenancies that I need to spend more time on psychoanalyzing.
Today's word-drool was all about how cities are the economic engines of countries (duh!), and how they must be incredibly nimble these days in order to stave off economic ruin. That's all well and good, until he tries to lay Toronto's ponderous bureaucracy and infamous inability to make decisions at the feet of Rob Ford. As if City Council hadn't been addicted to endless condo construction as a panacea before Ford. As if they had everything handled, from transit, to retaining businesses before Rob Ford's portly frame eclipsed everything.

Have to agree with 4x4 Time, Liberals want to attach their name and government to everything with our cash. I think I heard this on John Tory's show last night, about a woman who's mother was in Palliative care and was told their wasn't any funding to give her assistance while she was dieing, and the family had to raise $1400 a week to assist her on this. The comment was how much assisted care could be purchased just with this bit of Corporate welfare. The NBA made the decision before Wynn announced this.

@NBA game, I don't have much of a problem as people seem to about this, $500,000 is a drop in the bucket and last season allstar game said it brought Orlando $95 million to it's economy. Could that money be used for advertising on NBAtv (ABC, ESPN, TNT) o even print like Sports illustrated. There's a saying "knowing the cost of everything and the value of nothing" This could be value for it's cost. BTW the normal angry screamers in the media (talk radio/ TheSun) seemed to be oddly quiet when the feds gave the CFL 5 million dollars to do last seasons grey cup (of course with the conservative senator owning the Argos)

I still don't get how Ford is a left/right issue. Ford purposely and knowingly hired a "buddy" who has been convicted of threatening & assaulting women (this was before this past weeks event) and according to To Life has had prior drug conviction also. But Ford didn't want a city staff drive (even both sides of council encourage him to do so) Ford wanted this "private driver". Why?

Even The sun's Joe (it's only ginger ale) Warmington, who has been the biggest cheerleader of Ford in the media is just now starting to wonder about a list of over a dozen people that connected to Ford that's been effected by drug or violent crime. List of dozen

Please stop with the Orlando All-Star NBA weekend comparison. Throughout the depths of winter, they have Disney World and Sunshine etc., to draw out-of-state tourists. We have... the Eaton Shopping Centre and a few museums?
The same goes for Austin, Texas, with their music scene. Toronto is a big international city, already with big city music venues, established music events, and its cold and uptight public personality.
I didn't know about last year's $5 million to the CFL. I just wanted to watch that championship game via 'broadcasting' at some /any point.
If Smitherman had been elected mayor, we'd be talking about his husband getting disoriented, after a couple of days, cowering along the tracks in an unfavourable part of town. Apparently no one else within this city was a better candidate than either of these two men.

Chastising someone for being " name-calling", and then in the same sentence calling him a "...ignorant right-wing POS..." doesn't exactly sell your point.

@ Icarus - It's not a typo cause you said "Her" twice. I always thought Arige was a guy...

Argie, am I wrong??

Icarus

Corey,

Not the point. Argie complains about name-calling and will later in the same thread call people antisemetic. It's the hypocrisy that's the issue.

Phil: Argie is a mans name? Had no idea. I honestly thought Argie was a she. Argie, Margie, Margaret.... Whatever!

@Icarus
I'm not going to bother. You're just too over-sensitive for me.

The shoe fits you, eh?

I suppose Icarus is what Dave W was to Phil. He's always there to attack, such keyboard toughness. Except in Icarus' case, he is a much more sensitive, unfunny wank.

Of course the other difference is that Mike wont ban the latter.

@ Speyside - Unfortunately for Riemer, I figure after his performance on sat, Bernier is in the net until he drops the ball, or we play back to back games.

@ Argie: Give it a rest on Icarus, yeah he might be goading you, but the amount in which he posts on here attacking you is nothing in comparison to what Dave W was doing to Phil and for that matter others on this blog.

My Habs are on the west coast this week and my Coyotes in the east. Anyway, Habs and coyotes will get really hot. The Leafs will cool off.
