General Strike Open Mike

Open MikeHere in Italy the transportation unions are on a general strike for the day making it rather fun trying to get from Florence to Cinque Terre. Riomaggiore or bust!

I don't like the morning show on The Fan now. Brady and Walker don't seem to gel. I'm not a big fan of Brady, but Walker seems to always cut him off.

October 18, 2013 @ 7:59 AM

I hope this open mike is more interesting than Tuesday's. I think we need a Rob Ford scandal for the sake of future open mike's. Maybe the Star can dream up a story that involves a hooker, a midget (oops, sorry small person) or even a homosexual angle that indicts Ford. God knows they're trying to come up with something to finally get him.

Oh and that's it, I'm planning an Italian vacation next year. Looks freaking awesome.

October 18, 2013 @ 8:15 AM

@argie - I'll kick it off.

Interesting how Ford is outraged over a single photo of the (allegedly) sleeping city employee, yet somehow manages to dismiss or explain away any photographic or video evidence of his own naughty behaviour.

October 18, 2013 @ 8:27 AM

I knew that one was going to surface here. I guess Ford needed a few minutes to snooze during the 22 hr council meeting in 2011.

As opposed to the slacker city, unionized worker who has a history of snoozing, according to people who complained to Mammolitti.

October 18, 2013 @ 8:42 AM

Did I just see a report that Toronto has been voted the second most reputable city in the world??
Yep those Ford Brothers sure are an embarrassment!!

October 18, 2013 @ 9:16 AM

Ben Vidal

@ Argie: ah ah ah. If you want to go by what Mammolitti has said, he has indicated several times that Mr Ford is asleep during council meeting or making picks for his various sports pools. The one incident you are mentioning isn't the only time Ford has done that

I love how you excuse Ford no matter what. Must be awesome to be an apologist for two faced liar.

October 18, 2013 @ 9:19 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Speyside - I just read that article...Did you notice the part where the reporter states "despite the antics of the mayor"

Guess what...Toronto was a great place to live before Ford, and it will be a better place after. It is the PEOPLE of Toronto that make it great...not the sideshow in the Mayors office.....

October 18, 2013 @ 9:22 AM

Okay to make this an interesting open Mike, Speyside and I will keep making excuses for Ford and you and people like Tron will write lengthy posts claiming Ford to be the anti-Christ. Miss Phil will throw in a few shots at Ford and will desperately try to engage someone in an endless, useless debate. For good measure, Icarus will pipe in that I'm a hypocrite and that I'm a homophobe and racist.

Okay people, you have your roles, let's start now!!!

October 18, 2013 @ 9:38 AM

Mike, the hike between Monterosso and Vernazza, and Vernazza and Corniglia is hard, particularly the beginning and the end when the steps are steep and high. In between it's not so bad, but bring lots of water cause it can get hot.

Best of luck.

October 18, 2013 @ 9:45 AM

I actually was going to slide you in there between Speyside and myself but then I wasn't sure I could count on you to check in today. My bad.

October 18, 2013 @ 9:45 AM

I haven't seen the recently released video of the mall massacre in Kenya but I hear its quite gruesome.

Yes folks we all know not all muslims are terrorists but certainly almost all terrorist attacks are carried out by mulsims. Call me a liar, a racist, whatever but its the truth.

October 18, 2013 @ 9:57 AM

Ben Vidal

@ Argie: Your point? You have just stated what you always say. Is it just to get a rise out of people? Or you have nothing better to do today then repeat past statements like a parrot.

October 18, 2013 @ 10:01 AM

Argie, I haven't seen the video either, but in the middle of all the shooting they apparently kneel down and pray!
That must be quite the God they worship.

October 18, 2013 @ 10:06 AM

I guess we should all just stick our heads in the sand and only lift it out if there's a new CD by an artist we really, really like.

October 18, 2013 @ 10:06 AM

Ben Vidal

Yes because that's all I ever talk about Argie a new CD. Well played you got me. Sorry I didn't realize when you post on here it's about being a one trick pony on here like yourself.

What you stated has nothing to do with people keeping their "heads in the sand" it's just you wanting to spew that sort of garbage, because this is one of the only venues you can say something like that in.

Good on you for thinking you are bringing enlightenment by repeating the same statement over and over. Bravo you showed me.

October 18, 2013 @ 10:14 AM

Come on, don't get all bent out of shape.

Yes, I bring up the muslim terrorist thing a lot but if they would only stop with the killing, that would shut me up.

October 18, 2013 @ 10:20 AM

Well, my Habs won and the Leafs lost. That's two good things that happened last night. My Cardinals lost though. That's no good at all. The Seahawks beat them. My trainer is losing the first game, not by much, but Heggestad is beating my trainer right now. Hope they can rally. Frans is losing which is good and losing pretty big. I really want my trainer to win this. I really do.

October 18, 2013 @ 12:07 PM

@ Argie -

Just to clarify my earlier comment, I wasn't referring to any photos that might indicate Ford was napping. Just in general, it's pretty apprent Ford doesn't like to be judged on the basis of a photograph, like the one of him posing with "known" persons, or ones that depict him as bleary eyed and intoxicated. Seems pretty hypocritical of him to start foaming at the mouth over a single photo that may or may not show someone asleep at his desk.

October 18, 2013 @ 12:11 PM

@ Corey
I agree he might have over-reacted by calling for the guy and his mgr to be fired (while not knowing much of the facts) BUT looking at the photo, it seems pretty obvious buddy is asleep.

Its just another example of an under worked public sector worker living up to the stereotype.

Is Ford a hypocrite, perhaps.

October 18, 2013 @ 12:25 PM

Ben Vidal

@ Argie: the most laughable part about this is, when you mention under worked public sector worker. It's almost as if private business is bereft of individuals that would do the same. I don't know what office environments you've worked in, but there are people who slack and snooze on the job everywhere. I've watched people in my office use that same stereotype against the public sector, and then turn around and look out the window at traffic ALL DAY. The same things that happen in private business when it comes to slackers happens in government bodies.

As for photo's it's pretty obvious Ford was hanging out with drug dealers too, but you seem to deny that possibility of that at every turn. Or just accept that Ford had no idea who he was taking photo's with, because he has so many photo ops....

Even better is when you make an excuse for Ford sleeping in a council meeting. It's almost as if you knew his little cat nap came in hour 22 when it could have come after 10 minutes. The minute it happened doesn't matter Ford was caught asleep. He should shut his mouth when speaking about the same action by others.

October 18, 2013 @ 12:39 PM

4x4 Time

The Canada – EU Free Trade deal news is large on hype, but short on financial details…How do the Feds recover the lost dollars they collect now on current import tariffs? Will EU banks be allowed to set up shop here?..What are your thoughts on what you have heard so far?

October 18, 2013 @ 12:43 PM

In over the 20 years I've worked in an office, never have I seen someone fall asleep at their desk. Add to the fact buddy didn't just fall asleep at his desk, it was at a reception area. Have you ever encountered a receptionist asleep at her desk? I doubt it.

Sure, we've all slacked off once in a while but like I stated previously this only strengthens the stereotype that we all know well about public employees. And yes, like I also stated maybe Ford over-reacted.

October 18, 2013 @ 12:59 PM

The sleeping dude looks bad. They were pricks for posting it online.
Ford overreacted but he's not too far off base. While just firing everyone is ridiculous, it looks bad on the city and it can't be overlooked.

Unions do protect weak workers but not all public sector employees are lazy, useless and crappy workers.

And the crap about Ford writing a letter for his friend isn't bothering me that much. He stood up for a friend. I may question his choice in friends, but the he does seem loyal to them......well until they cross him. Then he'll robo-call them.

October 18, 2013 @ 1:17 PM

Shit, McNulty! You're 100 correct.

The Four Horsemen cometh.

October 18, 2013 @ 1:36 PM

@Speyside. Seeing that you're pimping the Tdot how come you don't live there? Still afraid of the "riff raff" LOL.

@Argie: You infer that public service union workers are lazy. Well anyone who has been self employed or started/built a company could say the same about you. Paid holidays (and you get them), labour laws, rules, comfort in knowing that your paycheque will always clear. As for napping on the job, I've seen it in offices, even in meetings. I just assume "maybe it was a bad night". And your defense of "private" industry ignores reality. Get to know a drug dealer or a couple of upscale escorts, you'll get all the info on what's REALLY going on LOL.

Politicians of all stripes are repulsive. The robot partisan supporters of said politicians are even worse. I see "political supporter" like I see "snitch".

October 18, 2013 @ 1:42 PM

Again with the escorts and drug dealers.

A great sleeping in a meeting story...Many years ago, when acetate slides were the norm on overhead projectors, we were giving a presentation to some buyers of a big retail chain. The lights were out and it was warm in the room. Half way through, we hear one of the buyers snoring...As my boss wraps up the presentation, he gets up close and yells "And that wraps up our presentation" with a loud hand clap...The buyer wakes up and starts clapping!..He forgot were he was...The whole room laughed for about 10 minutes..

I did that walk on the path between Corniglia and Vernazza and then Monterosso today. Best hike ever!

Gorgeous!! I can't wait to share pictures...

Have the seafood in Monterosso, and enjoy the beach.

Check out the old WWII pill boxes.

Really cool.

October 18, 2013 @ 3:01 PM

I know I'm a couple of open mikes behind, but congrats mike on the announcement that you are going to be a father again. There was talk mention earlier about debating a topic that is not mayor ford. Any one have any thoughts on the protests in New Brunswick?

October 18, 2013 @ 4:13 PM

I planted yellow raspberries in my garden this spring.

Here are the results.

October 18, 2013 @ 5:56 PM

My trainer did win. He beat Heggestad in the first game, and then beat Matchett quite handily. Way to go. They're going to win this. I know they will.

October 18, 2013 @ 6:04 PM

From what I have read (and who knows the truth) it seems the protesters fired at least one shot and then when on a destructive trail of violent ctions and threats. IF this is the case, throw the bastards in jail..

Re: Proverb: Very funny.

I'm not a gun advocate...but seeing as I now have a daughter, I guess I have to go out and buy a shotgun.

@Jason from Sudbury

That's disappointing news.

October 18, 2013 @ 9:20 PM

I'll send my congrats to Al as well. That's nice. Anyway, my Coyotes lost last night in a shootout. That sucked. Anaheim beat them, but they'll beat Detroit tonight at home. Also my Habs are going to beat Nashville and Hawks over Leafs. I'm not sure when my trainer plays again, but I'm sure they'll play today. So far they're doing well. It would be great if they could win this.

Thanks Cheryl. Good luck to your Coyotes...but not to your Habs.

@Al - Congratulations. Sleepless nights and a daughter will sooner or later provide inspiration to write some songs.

Phil - I haven't heard that Texas proverb in ages. I have two teenage sons. Neither has started anything close to serious dating yet, but I'm going to do my best to teach them respect and more.

Amazing how ISOhunt is forced to close yet you can find the exact same thing on Google. Is the MPAA going to have a raid pulled at Google? Nope, because little bank can't take big bank.

CBC had a article a while back that something like 25% of people under 25 or 30 had cut the cord from cable. They were watching online, streaming or downloading. Maybe the goons at the MPAA should adapt to the market.

Funny how society takes issue with certain types of what is deemed "organized crime" (bike clubs, mafia) yet cheerfully supports the remainder (most large, public firms)

Re: Natives. To bad teh RCMP couldn't put that much effort into finding missing women instead of arresting protestors.

Rick C in Oakville

Well my uncle (and his co-workers use to brag about sleeping and screwing the you know what on the over night shift at Massey Ferguson, about 30+ years ago, they eventually closed up shop, and before anyone mentions Conrad Black being the cause, they were on that road before he came into the picture. Problem is public servants never seem to be worried about the bottom line, recent stats show they take far more sick days and having family who work for the City of Toronto, they make sure they take them all.

My Habs lost and lots of injured players including Daniel Briere. that's no good. My Coyotes did win though over Deteroit. That's great. Leafs lost, good. My Trainer lost a game yesterday, but won the second game yesterday. Walker beat him in an extra end, but then he went on to beat Clark handily. Frans is out as they lost three. We don't have to worry about Frans. They play McCormick next. They'll beat McCormick. I want my trainer to win the whole thing. They can do it.

October 20, 2013 @ 8:17 AM

My trainer lost to McCormick. That's no good. They won't win. They got knocked out. That's awful. I really wanted them to win and I knew they could do it.

October 20, 2013 @ 1:22 PM

Mike, saw your twitter feed on the side. Are you just connecting in Iceland or actually visiting? Another place on my bucket list!

What are your thoughts on the restrictive gun control laws of Canada? I should be able to arm myself and protect myself. The American way is so much superior.

We're actually visiting. I'm still here in Iceland now.

The original plan was to enjoy the geothermal pools, but then Monica got pregnant and she was told not to partake because it increases the body temperature too much and is dangerous for the baby.

So we're walking the streets, checking out the Lebowski Bar (named after one of my favourite movies) and watching the people.

October 21, 2013 @ 4:03 AM

Gun Control is joking, right?

October 21, 2013 @ 9:37 AM

Well, so many Habbies players are hurt and Daniel Briere has a concussion. Someone from Nashville hit him and they just sloughed it off saying it was an accident. Well, no it wasn't. A hab got a concussion. So many concussions in hockey. When will it stop.

October 21, 2013 @ 11:33 AM

Hi Mike,
My daughter is going to Iceland this summer with Girl Guides. If we can afford it, my wife is hoping to go as well.
Looking forward to seeing the photos.
Have fun!
