Why I Love Sport: Reason #42

Why I Love Sport: Reason #42The East-of-Yonge version of me, my buddy Bob, shared this on Facebook. It's Mariano Rivera's Yankee Stadium goodbye.

I hate the Yankees and even I got choked up by the sight of a tearful Rivera hugging Andy Pettitte and Derek Jeter on the pitcher's mound before walking off the field one last time to a standing ovation.

I dislike the Yankees as well but this was a special moment. Rivera is definitely one of the greats.

That was a touching moment, whether or not you are a Yankees fan. All that you have to be a fan of is sport and humanity. Twenty-plus years of almost exclusively awesome pitching, and he leaves the mound with the words "I'm done, guys." Well done, Mariano Rivera, well done.

The Yankees were my favourite team before the "Blew" Jays started in 1977. Reggie Jackson was my favourite player. Mariano Rivera ranks as 1 of all time Yanks & how can anyone dislike him as a great person, teammate & especially the greatest closer of all time & was only player still able to wear # 42 (Jackie's #).

A touching moment for sure for the annals of Baseball history.

Was never a fan of The Empire, but Mariano transcends his uniform. He was named one of the 50 ALLTIME greats by Sports Illustrated, will be a shoo in for the HOF (and possibly even given the dispense of not having to be out of the game five years beforehand) and exuded class, unlike some of his teammates.

Only thing that would have made this even cooler? Metallica playing "Enter Sandman" live as he made that stroll from the 'pen to the mound. I had to explain to my boy why I was misty eyed and giving Mariano a standing ovation in our living room.
