Autumn Open Mike

Open MikeDo you say autumn or fall? I say autumn, but now I'm wondering if that isn't a little pretentious.

Happy Fall everyone!

Beautiful day! And hopefully a beautiful Friday as I'm golfing that day.

I find every year I finally work out the kinks in my game - just as the season is ending. Then, next spring its back to playing crappy and trying to fix everything. The circle of life.

@Argie
or perhaps a move to a warmer climate in the winter is in order. Maybe that's all that's keeping you from the pros. ;)

I'm going to have to wait until I retire before I move. That's a few decades away.

My pet peeve of the day: people who have beautiful old trees removed from their lots.

I hate the destruction of healthy trees.

If trees admitted a wifi signal, we'd be tripping all over ourselves to plant them....unfortunately all they make is oxygen...and who needs that?!?!

Al Reda: I love trees as much as you, but there are many reasons to remove large trees. When you take into consideration the roots on a tree you'll see where the problems begin. When you see the canopy you can expect the roots to grow out in the ground twice as far out. So 15 foot diameter canopy expect a 30 ft root system. Depending on the type of tree depends on on the strength and voraciousness of the root system. This causes many problems for houses in regards to basements. Roots will find a small crack in the cement foundation and grow and break and push against a foundation. This leads to leaks and on cinder block foundations can mean bowing of the foundation. Leaves clog gutter and on older houses where gutters drain into a weeping tile system in teh ground this is recipe for disaster.

With older houses the pipes leading to a sewer are clay. Clay pipes degrade over time. When you have a big tree near by the roots sense that moisture and head straight for it. They break the clay pipes even further and clog the drain. Last thing you want is poop backing up into your basement.

Lastly trees need to be pruned on a regular basis to encourage healthy growth and prevent the trees from becoming a nuisance. No one does this. If they did you might see less trees taken down.

All things to keep in mind. I had to cut down a nice silver maple tree that was about 35 feet tall at one of my houses. The tree had been planted right in the center of the backyard. The canopy was scratching the siding and roof of the house. The roots were cracking the cement patio and pushing against the foundation. I hated to do it, but I didn't have much choice. I did however plant a similar tree in the far end of the backyard.

Elvis was supposed to record Your Blog Sucks episode 7 today, but he had to bail. He's a very unreliable co-host.

Speaking of co-hosts, Rosie returns next week to record a new episode of Toronto Mike'd, but first Il Duce is dropping by to tell the true story of drunk Humble and the kitchen at my wedding. I'll post that episode on Thursday.

Nobody's punching any woman in the face... not on my watch!

Even though what she did was a seriously dick move. Let's hope after the camera moves on she came to her senses and gave the girl the ball.

Oh dear. Where to begin with this? Let's see - should I point out that of all the names you mentioned, the only one I had an ongoing "thing" with was Irvine? Who I haven't responded to in weeks?
Should I point out that it was actually your inanity that was the last straw for Blind Dave, the day you started off an Open Mike off by refusing to let something go from the previous one?
Should I point out that we can all occasionally disagree with one another, but no one except you is overly sensitive about being challenged, and has mini-tantrums about it?
Should I mention how very surprised I'd be if any of them took issue with anything I've ever posted?
Nah, maybe I'll let the whole thing go...

I don't find the word Autumn pretentious, just less efficient. Why use 6 letters (2 syllables) when 4 (1) will do?

Plus, being a song writer, it's a lot easier to find words that rhyme with fall. ;)

"Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed."

That's funny. I have that, word for word, tattooed on my chest - except backwards so I can read it in the mirror before I start each day. Its my credo of sorts.

4x4 Time

I have a business associate I dread talking to because he just cannot stop himself from talking. You ask him "What time is it?" and he tells you how a watch is made. Perhaps you know the kind of person I am talking about.
Anyway, at a golf tournament yesterday and thank god, he is not in my foresome but is in the group ahead of me. We hear him talking all day. At dinner I ask one of the ladies who was in his group how her day was with Don. She looks at me horrified and says "I swear he must have got a sunburn on his tongue!"...I laughed for about 5 minutes straight.

The horror. I'm without internet access at home for 36 hours. TekSavvy disconnected me two weeks early ... I'm switching to a fibre provider that's hooked into my building. Luckily I was able to move up the activation.

@ Elvis: As Louis CK is one of my favorite comics I'm well acquainted with his bag of dicks.

When I do use dick bag on someone, depending on who that someone is I'll give a slight pause after dick but before bag. So that they think the insult is done, but in fact there is more. I laugh maniacally when I walk away or drive away

Finding a rhyme for Autumn,
Don't want to hit rock bottom.

Finding a rhyme for fall,
Isn't at all,
An order that tall,
Just gotta be on the ball,
The writing's on the wall,

On the bathroom stall,
At the UC mall.

@Al,

TekSavvy was amazing at the beginning. Great prices, amazing service. Somewhere along the way they got too big, and didn't grow their service department with it. I do believe Rogers and Bell jerk them around every chance they get. It sucks, but it shouldn't be my problem.

When I first moved in with my girlfriend, we got TekSavvy DSL -- a Bell tech has to come in and install it to our unit. The tech arrived (I think several days late) ... yanked the cable in the wall too far, breaking it, and left without saying anything. We called TekSavvy wondering what the hell was going on, and they got Bell to send another tech ... another 4-7 days later (It was years ago, I don't remember exactly.)
The second guy discovered what the first had done, jury-rigged a fix, whatever. It worked finally.

At some point we switched to TekSavvy Cable when Bell was trying to change their policy to screw over resellers and their clients severely. All was good for a while, but now Rogers has oversold my area and the service has become unreliable.

So I got a lucky break. An independent company has run fibre right to my building. No Bell or Rogers lines. No caps. Something like more than double the upload rate for a similar price.

I feel like I'm joining the first-world now. Seriously, fuck Bell:

http://i.imgur.com/5gYmLpN.jpg (linked as it's a large Bell ad clipping)

WOW 20 GB CAPS FOR $44/mth. So obnoxious.

September 25, 2013 @ 9:24 AM

Argie

Speaking of Bell - a door to door guy came to my door asking if we were interested getting Fibe. I had nice chat with him but decided to against it.

I then wondered, Bell must be hurting for business if they're sending people around to drum up sales. I hope Rogers doesn't resort to this.

September 25, 2013 @ 10:30 AM

markosaar

Rogers just fills my mailbox with marketing materials in various guises that goes directly to the recycling bin.

Another thing that really upset me about Bell -- they called my dad and tricked him into "upgrading" his service several years ago, omitting the fact that the grandfathered unlimited data plan had been chopped down to something like 30 GB. My younger brother lived at home at the time and didn't know. That was quite the shocking bill.

(My dad demanded a refund and immediately switched to TekSavvy.)

September 25, 2013 @ 10:48 AM

Al

Oh don't get me wrong, I hate Bogers or Rell as much as everyone else...Teksavvy was just worse. I expected more from a small company trying to take down two giants (at the very least better customer service) and they refused to give me some very basic customer service right at the beginning when I was first switching over. That raised red flags.

Having said that, I'm desperately looking for an alternative to Bogers.

September 25, 2013 @ 11:07 AM

Cheryl

This is it. Bell and Rogers send junk mail galore. Primus is the best so get Primus. I'm sticking with Primus for life. They hardly ever go down unlike Sympatico who was always down. Now six more days until hockey. Go Habs.
