New results to be presented at the EPS-HEP conference in Stockholm, Sweden, this afternoon have put the Standard Model of particle physics to one of its most stringent tests to date. The CMS and LHCb experiments at CERN’s1 Large Hadron Collider will present measurements of one of the rarest measurable processes in physics: the decay of a Bs (pronounced B-sub-s) particle into two muons.

Question for the hivemind...

I was just reading about how Microsoft's Surface is bombing out... they can't sell them. I also recently read about how poorly Blackberry's Z10 is doing. It seems to me that Apple and Android are just dominating the smart phone and tablet markets.

If you have a smart phone and/or tablet, which one do you own?

I'll go first...

Phone: Galaxy S running Android
Tablet: HP Touchpad running Android

Your turn!

Phone: Samsung S2 LTE
Tablet: Nexus 7

I'm super-impressed by both these gadgets. The S2 is three generations behind but still works great, no (Android) app it can't run. Replaced a terrible BlackBerry Bold (9000).

The Nexus 7 was practically a steal at $250 compared to the competition. Runs great, super-convenient portable size. I think a bit part of why I like it so much is the hardcover-style Dodocase I got for it: http://www.dodocase.com/collections/nexus-7

The Nexus 7 replaced my old Sony e-reader where the display cracked in my backback (in a case). To be honest, I think an e-reader is still easier to read books on, but I don't mind the lit display. Also the tablet is far superior for stuff like magazines.

Phone: iPhone 4S
Tablet: BlackBerry Playbook

The Playbook bears some explanation. I bought it on the cheap when they slashed the price to move them. I was only interested in one feature: it has HDMI out, allowing me to plug it in to my HDTV and watch HD video/audio from it. A buddy of mine put his HD video collection on an external drive for me, so I'd just copy what I want to see onto the Playbook. Since I have watched most of what I was interested in, I can't remember the last time I turned the Playbook on. Truly an awful device for anything else. They couldn't even get email right on it.

Phones: Samsung Galaxy S3 and Sony Xperia X10 (both Android; the latter is the home to my AT&T SIM card)
Tablet: I'm with Dawn Kiebals - Tylenol, extra strength (needed two this morning)

I can't get into a tablet computer. I rely too much on the speed of touch-typing, not having to look at the keyboard. For that reason alone, tablets will not replace computers with physical keyboards, at least until they can flawlessly take our speech and put the text into the computer or document. That will especially be true in the business world, so anyone calling for the death of the desktop or notebook is out to lunch, much like Michael Dell pointed out earlier this week.

Finally, congratulations, Mike. Have fun with the new house. Like any other house, new or not, it becomes a license to spend money.

Ok, here is the deal...Last night invited some friends out for dinner, nice meal, some wine, and the bill comes. Great dinner, excellent service. I look at the total, enter the tip on the machine and think nothing of it...Today we were discussing how reasonable the dinner was and my wife discovers they forgot to charge us for a couple of bottles of wine. We debate for a minute and say, we need to call them and tell them and pay for it and do so.

Would you do the same?

That's a tough one, but most likely that long after the fact I'd probably do nothing but make sure I patronize that restaurant and give them plenty of repeat business, and tip well. In the end they might even (secretly) suggest the same plan, as you'd likely be giving them even more of your money in the long run.

July 19, 2013 @ 12:59 PM

Ben Vidal

I'd go back to see the waitress to make sure she didn't get dinged for it. At the same time she probably received less tip overall as those bottles would have added to total cost.

Otherwise most restaurants are charging disgusting amounts for wine based on what they pay for it. So I probably wouldn't worry

@4x4, most knob and tube is buried in the walls etc. My son bought a 70 year old farm house that had an updated panel and looked all legit, until the past winter it was costing him $700 a month in heating oil to keep warm. We tore out the perimeter walls to have it spray foamed, and just like an episode of Holmes on Homes, we are tearing it out and updating it all now. Knob and tube is pretty scary, best to be rid of it. The bank never checked on anything as far as I know.
Congrats on the purchase Mike, hope you have a good set of tools! LOL.
Cell phone is old Nokia flip Phone, no tablet just a 6 year old Acer laptop, as you can see I am on the cutting edge of technology.
Lastly: Detroit filing for bankruptcy really wasn't any surprise. Was through Detroit alot 20-25 years ago, and you could start to see it falling apart then. Truly sad, as we would always comment on some of the very beautiful homes that had been left abandoned, even as you came off the bridge. The procession of corrupt Mayors, and councilors didn't help to bring it back.

No knob and tube wiring in the new home. We just had a thorough home inspection.

In my previous house (the one my ex lives in today) there was some knob and tube wiring when we bought it and the insurance company made us get rid of it and get certified before they would insure us.

Nice photo of K&T (as we say in the business).

The photo also points out 3 other aspects of older houses.

1. 'real' 2x4s and 2x6s. That is solid wood with no risk of warping or expanding/contracting.

2. plaster and lath walls. These have an high R-factor and are excellent sound proof walls -- kids can't hear you have sex with those. The only down side is that they sometimes have an interesting surface modulation.

Hockey schedules are out, goody. That means the season can't be too far away, thank goodness. Diamondbacks lost last night. Oh well, if they lose they lose, that's it. I agree about physical keyboards. I can't use a tablet or anything like that. It wouldn't work for me. A touch screen wouldn't work for me, but in the old days nobody used cellphones because they didn't exist. Why should I get one. It would be a waste of money.

July 20, 2013 @ 7:55 AM

@ Rick C in Oakville - The city of Detroit deciding to file for bankruptcy is scary on a number of fronts, and will likely set a pretty ugly precedent for other municipalities and cities to follow if it is allowed to go through.

I read this week that the California State Comptroller said the States Net Worth is NEGATIVE $129 Billion. Thats Assets - Debt...Just imagine what their debt load is!

I have not had the chance to research yet, but I think Ed Koch put NYC into bamkruptcy in the early 80's before they re-built the city

Scary times ahead I think....

RE: NHL schedule:

Yup - schedule is out and I am now fully booked for work until next October now. I have 87 days of curling coming up between October and next April with about 40 days of other events thrown in there for good measure. It's a good time to be working in TV sports.

@TorontoMike:

Congrats on the new house purchase in my old hood! When you were talking to Elvis on YBS#6 I laughed when you were talking about housing prices and what Elvis' house would be in New Toronto (lakeshore/brown's line) and that's exactly why the Mrs' and I decided to get the hell out. We bought our exec townie in 2001 and realized some serious capital gains, but to buy a full detached house in that area that wasn't run down or needed serious reno's would have cost use between $700 - $900 thousand and to me that didn't make good economical sense. So, the decision to move to the Falls was made and we couldn't be happier. However, saying that, it's a great neighbourhood and I'm sure you'll love it as much as we did for 11 years.

Cheers all!!

Oh yes, I forgot. Congrats Mike on the new palace.

We have been without power since yesterday at 2:00pm, Toronto Hydro was answering phones and simply hanging up on people until 5:15 am this morning. My wife and I went for a bike ride last night to look for crews to update them and see if we could get on the list for repairs.

The power failure was due to a damaged insulator on a feeder to our street, so it is just our street all 40 houses and everyone else around us has power. It looks like an over load or a raccoon made it blow up real good. Then the storm hit.

So, in 1 week we have had over 3 outage for more than 36 hours of no power and it's not looking good for power on until sometime Monday, for a grand total of over 60 hours with no power.

I'm bringing home a 6KW UPS from the office with 3 sets of batteries, we should be OK for 24 hours or so with just the fridge and occasional TV. I can run batteries back and forth from the office charging here if needed.

What a weird summer.

Well, good there are other people who don't own cellphones. They weren't even around in the old days. I remember phones had dials that you had to turn the dial after counting the holes and putting your finger in the right hole. It was hard to actually dial fast, but nobody uses those phones anymore.

Oh yes, we had a rotary phone when I was a kid. It was easy enough to use because that's all there was, so you just learned.

I recall several years later after rotary phones had more or less bit the dust, I was at someone's house and had to call a taxi. All they had was an old rotary. It must have taken me about ten tries to dial properly and not screw it up.

I may have been intoxicated at the time.

July 21, 2013 @ 12:03 PM

Rick C in Oakville

LOL Blind Dave, could see you fumbling with the dial, may have had an episode or 2 my self at one time. What I don't understand is why Bell still sticks us with a touch tone charge every month, I think it's around $3.00, not a huge amount but something that seems should have been retired some time ago as the infrastructure must be paid for by now I hope.

July 21, 2013 @ 1:21 PM

Jason from Sudbury

I'm afraid I'm going to sound like Cheryl here lol but I haven't had a Bell product in close to 10 years. I had both my landline and cell with them but they were pissing me off and charging way too much so I got rid of both. Went voip for my landline and had it for 6 or 7 years, and went to Rogers for my cell in 2004.

July 21, 2013 @ 4:32 PM

Cheryl

Well, the Diamondbacks won. That's good. Well, I told you Bell sucks. Primus never charges for touch tone. See, Primus is the best. Well, if you were trying to use a dial phone trying many times to phone a radio station and talk to an announcer, that's when it really sucked. I was okay with those phones otherwise, but now I'm used to the touch tone phones. I know dialing a 0 or a 9 ducked big time.

1 of my best friends wife passed away just over a year ago with MS after a long battle at 49. Very unfortunate as he was devastated,no kids. He is Catholic & started going back to church after his wife passed for consoling & dealing with his loss. He would go to church 2-3 times a week before or after work.

Just found out that he is dating again & great for him at late 40's.

Get ready - he is dating 1 of the NUN's at the church he frequented every week. She has already disbanded from the Catholic church & given up her teaching at Catholic school in Toronto.
