Is the new home in Toronto Toronto or GTA Toronto?

It's actually Toronto... land of the 416.

It's not a done deal yet, but it's close.

Congrats Mike, didn't take you long.

Maybe you can purchase a house near the subway line that the opportunistic Liberals have fallen back in love with to help in their buy election re-election.

@Rick C in Oakville

I'm glad the province is taking over those efforts because leadership at City Hall was going to guarantee disaster.

Happy anniversary to Mrs. elvis and I!

I'm surprised you'd get married so close to your birthday...

July 12, 2013 @ 9:18 AM

Rick C in Oakville

Easier to remember your anniversary after many years of marriage, if it is close to your Birthday (only 10 days between mine), good planning Elvis ;).
On the Subways issue, I just question their sincerity, will it be another promise to break after, like no new taxes etc. etc. to secure a seat?

July 12, 2013 @ 9:23 AM

I'm just surprised someone would marry you. Of course I kid.

July 12, 2013 @ 9:25 AM

I just realized I got married 12 days before mine...

But Elvis really, really loves his birthday. It's epic. My whole day tomorrow revolves around it.

What happened to Your Blog Sucks this week?

July 12, 2013 @ 9:28 AM

"I'm glad the province is taking over those efforts because leadership at City Hall was going to guarantee disaster."

@ Mike - That's hilarious. it was Ford who was always for the subway but the south of Bloor snobs who couldn't care less about the people in Scrab didn't want them. Now that Glenn Murray has flown in with a huge cheque, subway's are cool again. You really should work for the Liberal party - assuming you're not already.

BTW, I love how the Liberals buy their votes with OUR money. Slimy but smart.

Elvis left the country for work purposes so we'll record episode 6 of Your Blog Sucks next week.

As I've written countless times, who isn't for subways? All things being equal, subways beat LRT.

So Ford could scream "subways, subways, subways" all he wanted, but he never ever had a plan to pay for them, which is how we arrived at LRT. He's a disgraceful leader.

July 12, 2013 @ 9:35 AM

Ben Vidal

@ Argie: Clement wasn't buying votes with Gazebos?

July 12, 2013 @ 9:35 AM

Ben Vidal

Well said Mike. That's exactly what it was about where the funding was coming from. Then again Ford likes to throw out numbers that sound good, but aren't based in reality. "We've saved a billion dollars." when there not only flaws, but massive holes in his numbers. Or make up where money is going to come from.

I won't go on, because it's evident to everyone by now that he just pulls numbers out of the air and provides them to the public.

July 12, 2013 @ 9:43 AM

@ Ben

Subway extension (a few bil) vs gazebos (a few thousand)

Good comparison.

July 12, 2013 @ 9:46 AM

Ben Vidal

A dollar is a dollar Argie. Doesn't matter where it's wasted or how it's wasted, just that it's wasted.

July 12, 2013 @ 9:48 AM

"He's a disgraceful leader."

Just because he doesn't like the gays. Right?

Should he be like Wynn, Justin & Rae and sit with Levin, the perv?

July 12, 2013 @ 9:49 AM

I knew that would be your response. Murder is the same as running a red light, right?

July 12, 2013 @ 9:50 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

You do realize that they didn't know Levin was alleged to have committed such crimes when they sat down with him, right?

They're not condoning his actions. Nobody is.

July 12, 2013 @ 9:51 AM

Sam in Pickering

There should be less talk about your idiot mayor and more talk about this:

After more than 30 years without a winner, the Sikorsky Prize has a champion. Today aeronautical startup Aerovelo confirmed that its human-powered helo, Atlas, has won the competition.

July 12, 2013 @ 9:59 AM

Ben Vidal

@ Toronto Mike don't bother. It's Argie's shtick just to make absurd exclamation to get a reaction out of people.

@ Argie: Sorry Argie I wasn't comparing Apples and Oranges like you are. your logic once again is faulty. Lets also be honest, it was a $50 million dollar fund that Clement littered around his riding, not thousands. So get your numbers right.

You for a second think that anyone knew what Levin was up to when they utilized him as resource? You must get crazy before going into a weekend, because that point actually hurts you.

July 12, 2013 @ 10:04 AM

@Argie, the Scarborough subway expansion reeks of the same gas-plant vote-buying.

Secondly from good-for-the-city perspective IT'S COMPLETELY FUCKING RETARDED. Yes, let's divert MORE people to the past-capacity Yonge line. Of course more subway is "nice to have" but before such an expansion is made, you'd need a relief line at least (and where the relief line has been planned, it would be perfect for riders coming in from Scarborough.)

Also never mind that King, Queen & Spadina are all complete transit hell. But yeah. Subway in low-density Scarborough.

July 12, 2013 @ 10:06 AM

*A good-for-the-city perspective

July 12, 2013 @ 10:06 AM

Congrats (when the ink dries) on the house buy, Mike. Glad everything got sorted out. Sounds like you'll be moving in just in time to plant some tulips and garlic.

July 12, 2013 @ 10:11 AM

Is anyone else going to the Recipe to Riches auditions tomorrow?

July 12, 2013 @ 10:11 AM

It was Levin who worked with Wynn to get their infamous sex-ed curriculum into the schools back in 2009. Thank god McGuinty came to his senses and kyboshed that idea.

You know the one where 8 & 9 yr olds get to learn about masturbation and anal sex? That one. Someone like Wynn and McGuinty should have had a clue right them and there. Unfortunately there are still many others like Levin influencing the school boards.

Anyway, I'm done discussing this piece of shite. Go ahead and attack me personally if you want. I wont respond.

July 12, 2013 @ 10:24 AM

Ben Vidal

@ Argie: I think it's hypocritical to make the leap you are making about the whole situation. Especially the part about many others like Levin influencing the school boards. You can't give Phil hard time for his leap the other day, when you are going way out to left field on this one.

July 12, 2013 @ 10:38 AM

I don't know where I stand with sex-ed. Ideally parents would handle it, however there are 1. a lot of stupid parents out there. 2. families with absent parents., 3. parents that are too embarrassed by the subject matter 4. religious concerns that are counter-productive to public health, so it unfortunately is a state problem.

I don't know where the line is between too-much and not-enough. And it's going to mortally offend a lot of religious parents no matter what is taught.

That said, the sex ed. I received in grade 7 was some of the stupidest stuff I've ever heard in my life. The teachers couldn't even get basic anatomy right.

July 12, 2013 @ 10:46 AM

Really? You'll steep to bringing up Levin? That's beyond low. There's so much to fault the Liberals for and you use this?

Wait a second? Isn't that like saying all Catholics condone sexual abuse of boys? So to compare apples to apples as you like to do. I can trust anyone who worked with any priest that molested a young boy.

July 12, 2013 @ 10:46 AM

@ McNulty

When I use the word 'Liberals" I mean the political party (that's why its capitalized). I don't mean liberal minded people.

I thought everyone would understand that.

But thanks for bringing up the homosexual priests scandals from decades ago. Classy.

July 12, 2013 @ 11:03 AM

Al The Royal Pain

Here is my attempt at bringing the thread back to a more positive note...

I'm loving this weather! I wish it could be low 20s with low humidity all year long!

Congrats on the possible closing on the house Mike!

If anyone is in the Cookstown area tomorrow night, my band will be playing @ The Iron Horse. It should be a fun night.

July 12, 2013 @ 11:09 AM

Ben Vidal

@ Argie: That's right Argie, make like the Catholic church and brush it under the rug. It happened years ago so it doesn't matter.

You want to talk about archaic, your friend Pope Francis only is now just changing a Vatican law. Guess what the new law is . Sexual violence against children is now a crime. If it wasn't so sad I'd laugh. In 2013 it's only just a crime now for priests, which literally means that before this it wasn't a crime.

Also get off of the band wagon about it just being homosexual priests. There are numerous instances of priests sexually abusing girls too.

July 12, 2013 @ 11:11 AM

He also made a law against leaking any information like that.

July 12, 2013 @ 11:19 AM

At least in Texas anyway. In western Europe (which is pretty liberal minded socially), most countries don't allow abortions after 16 weeks.

Canada is one of the few civilized countries where someone can get an abortion anytime, for any reason or NO reason at all.

July 12, 2013 @ 11:30 AM

Duane, is gay marriage immoral?

July 12, 2013 @ 11:30 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Duane is Dave Williams who is banned from this site. His comment has been removed.

It's cruel and unusual punishment to judge a woman for aborting her baby. Any woman who has done so has arrived at that very difficult decision in a likely pain-staking fashion, and removing her rights and judging her with such hate is vile.

As for gay marriage, anyone who would exert energy to prevent two people in love from getting married is a person I have absolutely no time for.

But Duane's comment wasn't deleted because I disagree with what he said, I assure you of that.

July 12, 2013 @ 11:34 AM

A decent article on consequences of Wynne's Scarborough vote-buying from a site that might be typically construed as left-wing:

July 12, 2013 @ 11:41 AM

Great comments everyone - ha!

Believe it or not, I proposed on my birthday. Shocking as it was that she said yes, it was more shocking to her I'd give up my birthday for a proposal!

July 12, 2013 @ 12:18 PM

@lorne are you entering the Recipe to Riches contest? If you are have you considered entering for master chef canada?

@Mike hopefully everything works out with the new home. Glad to hear you were able to find a solution that to banks ratio issues that were causing you some issues.

Anyone have thoughts on the new pearl jam single?

Congrats! I wish the elvii many more happy years together.

@Toronto Mike

Great you can maybe close a deal. I just hope you haven't jinxed yourself (as you so often do the Leafs and jays :) )

To all:

There was a straggler on my back deck last Sunday who was absolutely INSISTENT on coming in the house and following me everywhere when I was outside. He has a slice out of his ear and maybe 1/4 of a tail missing. Took him to the vet and otherwise he is young and healthy. He is now an indoor cat for good and he is mine. Period.

Re: the house purchase.

The final condition is ours to waive. I just want to see the home inspection, first.

As for the bank ratio, the trick there was finally being able to give my current house to my ex. She takes the house and the mortgage. I'm then free to own another house with a different mortgage.

I feel like Donald Trump with all these homes. I'll sure miss the swimming pool in my apartment, though...

July 12, 2013 @ 1:24 PM

Just curious, why was Dave Williams banned from the site?

July 12, 2013 @ 1:45 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

He's currently the only person banned.

It was months ago... continuous obnoxious and harassing behaviour that was making me hate my own blog.

If you want to condemn anyone who smokes a little weed once, that's fine. Do it dozens and dozens of times, and we're going to have a problem.

July 12, 2013 @ 1:50 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

And it's worth noting that he had plenty of warnings.

I'm a sucker for all things Pearl Jam, so it's with great bias I tell you I love the new single.

July 12, 2013 @ 1:53 PM

Fair Enough. If it was getting to the point of frustration and making you hate you OWN blog then you've made the right decision. I come to your blog to relax my brain and for fun and amuzing topics/subjects so I want to say thanks for continuing it!

July 12, 2013 @ 2:09 PM

Mississauga Phil

Congrats on the House Mike!!!!

Obviously there is a difference between associating with someone who is LATER accused of a heinous crime and having your picture taken with a KNOWN felon....

However, I'll say again, anyone who messes with children deserve to spend the rest of their lives as Bubba's cellmate. Let Bubba show them what it feels like....

July 12, 2013 @ 2:23 PM

Oh mike I almost forget - congrats on the house.

I have an idea: After you take possession, host a 2 hour podcast with the frequent posters of your blog. You could invite me, Phil, Ben, mark, Corey, Speyside and for kicks Dave Williams. I'll bring a 6 pack of Bud light. What do you think???

July 12, 2013 @ 2:40 PM

Mississauga Phil

Minus the Dave Williams (I might just punch him if I ever met the guy) and I'm in! :)

July 12, 2013 @ 2:43 PM

@ Phil

A white, Christian, heterosexual male between the ages of 18-55 (not sure he's conservative) I can't stand: Justin Timberlake

I will be a happy man if I never see his name in a headline on a news or entertainment website.

July 12, 2013 @ 3:30 PM

@joel: Indeed I am. They liked my audition video enough to not instantly eliminate me, so that has to be a good sign. =)

I didn't know there was a Master Chef Canada series, thanks for the heads up. I see the deadline for entry is July 25th. I guess I'll have to see how the R2R auditions go, since they have a "no compete" clause in the submission form. =)

July 12, 2013 @ 3:34 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie - Nah, he campaigned for Obama last time, that makes him a Liberal....sorry doesn't fit the criteria.

July 12, 2013 @ 4:03 PM

Congrats on the house, Mike. That's great. Anyway, I'll be computer shopping tomorrow. I have to because I need a new work computer that's faster and has more memory. The technician couldn't install the new software yesterday because there wasn't enough memory.

Anyway, it would be nice to have weather like this all the time, no hot and humid stuff would be fine with me.

July 12, 2013 @ 5:08 PM

I don't agree with Alex Anthopoulos and John Gibbons decision to not start R.A. Dickey in Baltimore tonight.

If our premier starter can't pitch against a division opponent we are in big trouble.

What's going to happen next year when the Orioles will be even better? Does Dickey skip those starts as well?

July 12, 2013 @ 6:19 PM

@Phil, punch out Dave Williams? I think you should do something to mellow yourself out.

July 12, 2013 @ 6:26 PM

Glen Dickey pitched last night.

July 12, 2013 @ 6:30 PM

They pushed Dickey's start ahead 1 game so he didn't face the Orioles.

He would have started tonight instead of Mark Buehrle.

July 12, 2013 @ 6:35 PM

@Phil I'd be all into Duh-Wayne/Dave's face making repeated contact with a brick. That would mellow me out :) Glad I missed out on his latest contribution.

@Cheryl Looks like we're the ones representing on the chick side. Are you getting a PC or a MAC tomorrow?

July 12, 2013 @ 7:02 PM

@ mark

Trust me, Phil knows how to "mellow" out.

July 12, 2013 @ 7:29 PM

Really? Congratulations, here's your "I'm A Dickwad" badge.

I'd love to hear about what you do for a living - probably nothing close to what any of us would guess. And to be honest, beneath all of your nonsense, you're likely a good guy. Again, nothing like any of us would guess.

So Argie, what's your deal dude?

July 12, 2013 @ 7:57 PM

To be fair, I made the same joke. But it didn't need to be belaboured.

July 12, 2013 @ 8:10 PM

Well I just had dinner with a few friends . One of the ladies happen to mention that Justin Trudeau was an intelligent young man who would be great for Canada.
Harper was a disaster who was against seniors blah blah blah!
Dinner was not so good after that.

July 12, 2013 @ 10:31 PM

@ Argie
Hey Argie, do you really think Mike could handle us all together in the same room?
Hmm? I'm thinking maybe not.

July 12, 2013 @ 10:34 PM

Great video for your chocolate cake! You came across as personable, knowledgeable and engaging. I love the sneaky unseen hand at the end. I don't know if your recipe is what they are looking for, but you did a nice job of selling yourself.

1 question though. Margarine? Really? Never ever buy the stuff since all-natural butter is infinitely better.

July 12, 2013 @ 10:49 PM

@Gump: Thanks. That was my wife's hand. Even if I didn't put in the script, she would have stolen a piece =)

I'm about 50/50 margarine and butter. I tend to use the Becel olive oil or one of the "healthier" margarine, and butter for baking. In all honesty, given how little of either I actually use, I could probably get away with only using one exclusively.

July 12, 2013 @ 11:34 PM

Probably a good idea to do a flood inspection before buying :)

We've extended the condition so this won't be a done deal until next week.

@Not Mike Holmes

I spent over 3 hours with a guy yesterday going over every nook and cranny of the house we're looking at. He seemed to know his stuff and I think he did a great job.

Other than the typical older house stuff, there were two things discovered that require further investigation / action... stay tuned!

July 13, 2013 @ 11:51 AM

I got my new computer. It's not a MAC. Work doesn't allow a MAc and I never used MACs. It's an Acer laptop. A laptop will allow me to work a little longer during a power blackout if there ever is one. Anyway, my friend is getting it all set up and he will bring it back to me on Tuesday morning before the technician calls and does my reinstallation of the new software on it for the new system. Anyway, good thing I got one right away and didn't have to wait for it to be shipped or anything like that.

Well, my diamondbacks won last night after losing three in a row. they're still in first place. Hopefully doing better than the Jays.

Addition to above:

I WILL NOT condescend myself to wearing a jacket in mid-July, even if it does feel like winter is soon upon us. I've switched to jeans from shorts, but that is as far as I will go.

Anyway, we got some trees cut back that were rubbing against the house, and we are currently replacing some rotting wood on our deck.

Busy weekend, as usual.

@Blind Dave: Sorry to hear of the cool weather, but we are experiencing one of our best yet, not hot enough to throw on the air, humidity is tolerable. Vacuumed 3 cars and gave them full washes today. Prepping my hobby car (83 Mustang Convertible) for the big Ford Stampede event at the Ford plant here in Oakville for the weekend of July 27-28. Nice and close, and wont need to drive for hours to attend.

@Rick C: I always liked the Fox body Mustangs. What do you have in it?

But of course I still prefer the first generation Mustangs over all of them, and my ultimate dream classic if I could own one would have to be a Shelby Mustang GT500.

@ Liz
I'm sure you're a decent lady but you keep asking me what I do for a living. Why? Anyway, I work in the finance industry (essentially a 9-5 er). How about you?

Have a good weekend all.

Nice to see the Blue Jays are finally doing the right thing. They brought up Brett Lawrie Saturday for 2 games to play second base just before 4 days off for the All Star break. They could of left him in AAA to get 4 more games in. Finally, the Jays are standing up to the little puke. The kid had it all (Canadian, starting 3 rd baseman and he blew it all)
Basically, having him play 2nd base for a couple of games then having 4 days off is telling him You are now and for the future a utility player, take 4 days off and reflect how you phucked everything up for yourself and we will talk to you on Friday.

July 14, 2013 @ 1:25 PM

Well, sounds like Saskatchewan is cold. Well, the weather is perfect, that's for sure. Diamondbacks won again last night. They're in first place. Jays still in last I hope. Wish there were more sports on. Oh well, less than three months and we have hockey again.

Hey Argie,

I'm just interested in hearing how people spend their days. What people do for a living is a part of their particular puzzle - and story. You're obviously bright and quite expressive so I got to pondering what the nature of your work might be. My interest is genuine and hopefully not intrusive.

I am a Marketing Communications Specialist. I have spent the last decade running a Marketing Communications Consultancy. My clients have included Ontario Power Authority, Enbridge and various other well-known clients and agencies. The first published magazine article was about my grandmother who died in her fifties of breast cancer. I quite simply adored her.

I'm in the process of closing my consultancy to migrate to contract/full-time work. I'm pretty excited about what's possible.

Hey Boon, was in your wedding venue this morning. It's truly a wonderful space - great vibe. Saw the truck! :)

@Blind Dave You are a sweet, sweet person! I'm always glad to read your contributions. I believe your encouragement of various of us are heartfelt. How refreshing.

@Jackson I just call things as I believe them to be. Observations not insults.

Gosh, I am going to blush now. :)

Hey, I can be a total jerk when I want to be, and for the most part I am anti-social. But my one personal rule on message boards is to not say anything behind a mask that I wouldn't say in person. I do have my hot buttons, but I simply can't be buggered to feed the trolls most of the time, either on the net or in person.

By the way, your posts are pretty damned refreshing too. I admire your honesty.

July 14, 2013 @ 11:04 PM

Hi Liz,

Fair enough. I didn't mean to come across as defensive.

Without getting into too many specifics, I work for an investment manager as a performance analyst (i.e. measuring investment performance). My job is interesting but there are times throughout he day where I get a few minutes to pound out some thoughts. I've always had a strong interest in politics and sports and this blog allows me to spew my opinions to the blogosphere. Obviously, I can't share many of these controversial opinions with my work colleagues or most of my friends so in many ways this is my only avenue or forum for these said opinions.

Anyway I appreciate the fact Mike is pro free-speech and allows all opinions whether he agrees with them or not.

July 15, 2013 @ 8:47 AM

Ben vidal

@ Toronto Mike: I agree wholeheartedly with Argie. I think you should have the most loyal and most spirited people who come to comment and frequent this blog at some sort of function. I don't think it needs to be your house, but I think there should be beer and I think it should be a podcast. Something tells me it would be a podcast for the ages. Phil can smoke something before hand, so that he doesn't get confrontational(insert joke). Outside of that I think everyone would be a good laugh. Except Dave Williams. Just forget to invite his ass.

Well, if you haven't found out by now, I'm a medical transcriptionist. I work at home. Anyway, the old system has to be cleared out really soon because we'll be starting the new system. I got a list of keyboard shortcuts for the new system which does help, but I train on it on Wednesday.

Well, my diamondbacks lost yesterday. Oh well, they should still be doing okay. I just know they're doing better than the Jays. That's all I need to know.

@ Phil: No I don't take you for big pot head. When you get confrontational on this blog (at times, not all the time) it becomes evident that you aren't in a consistent purple haze. people who are always baked don't give any energy to arguing. Well at least important things, they may have heated debates over the best type of kush.

Purple Haze. 5kms to Etobicoke. It all makes sense now.

Your observation re: readers of this blog and Glee watchers appears to be spot on.

Some human-shaped piece of trash broke into the shed my brother's bike was stored in and stole it last night.

What the fuck is it with bike theft in this city? By modern standards it's not even a valuable bike (a 90s hardtail mountain bike), but it was HIS bike. It was certainly nicer than a beater. He even had a beater too: that got stolen out of the backyard a year or two ago.

I haven't had one stolen yet, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time. A couple of seats have been taken. What a crime that is. Congrats, you now are the proud owner of a worn bike seat attached to a post that most likely doesn't fit what you have. Assholes.

@ Ben - Cool, I'm just a passionate guy.

..oh and Purple is the best kind of kush...duh :)

That really sucks.

I keep my bike in the apartment, but I've had my son's bike taken from the porch and I had a bike taken out of the garage when I was a teen.

Even if I leave my bike in my mom's backyard or somewhere I lock it with my kryptonite lock... I'm paranoid.

July 15, 2013 @ 1:20 PM

Yeah, the beater probably cost all of $10 at a garage sale or something, but that mountain bike would have been around $800-1000 when he bought it. Worth $200 at most nowadays, probably fenced for $15.

I don't think bringing the bike inside is an option where he lives, so I guess he's just going to have to live without a bicycle until he eventually moves. He's not in a position where he can afford to replace it, regardless.

I live in a condo where bikes aren't permitted inside ... I have to suffer my inconsiderate douchebag neighbours occasionally vandalising my bikes through their negligence. One broken spoke, and two smashed rear-derailleurs + bent hangers, so far.

I think it's been proven that at least a few of them are decent singers, but the autotune on that show just draws attention to everything wrong with modern music.

July 15, 2013 @ 2:01 PM

The consumption of purple kush actually funds terrorism.

@ Patrick - So does driving your car...where do you think the gas comes from??

July 15, 2013 @ 2:49 PM

I wonder if its a good idea for me to google "purple kush" on my work computer. I'm just so damn curious....

July 15, 2013 @ 3:07 PM

I don't know how that comment about the Glee guy ended up here. I blame the heat. Stupid office's stupid cheapass landlord hasn't turned on the air conditioning for some reason.

July 15, 2013 @ 3:07 PM

I refuse to comment on Glee - other than to say its "fabuloth!!!"

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie- I'll save you the trouble. Kush is just a more potent strain of weed, some of it is green on the outside with a more purplish hue on the inside.

July 15, 2013 @ 3:34 PM

Hey Argie,

I figured it was a combustible of some sort...purple kush is a pure indica strain with an 8 week flowering time. Guess there's some planning involved! :)

Routinely given 4 out of 5 stars, pk is one of the most powerful ganja strains in the world.

So now we know!

and knowing is half the battle.....GI JOE!!!!!

at 14:01 that wasn't this Patrick. I want to Google Kush too but won't. Really what is it? Don't tell me.
