First!

It's 13 degrees. Somebody turn up the heat, please.

Sam,

I respectfully disagree. I rather like the chilly temps. Its much better than sweating my ass off.

Awesome biking weather, if a little damp at the moment.

I'm currently wondering if my company shut down and no one told the two of us that are sitting here.

A lot of people dropped by yesterday to read about Rinse. That comment from March foretells what we now know and is a key part of unveiling Rob Ford's lies.

Here are the top 5 traffic days (unique visitors) in the history of this website:

7/7/09
6/6/13
7/8/09
8/25/09
1/8/11

7/7/09 was the day Martin Streek passed away. The traffic that day was 5x what I had yesterday.

Do you get more money if you get more traffic?

June 7, 2013 @ 9:38 AM

@Kevin

No, I don't get more money if I get more traffic.

I make more money if more people click the Adsense ads on this site, and more inbound links will increase my SEO power which will attract more people looking to pay for a textual link.

And honestly, the ad money I make off this site is gas money. It's not "paying the mortgage" money. I haven't been doing this for 11 years for the money, that's for sure.

I don't understand why the US hasn't approved the Keystone pipeline yet. Strategically it makes more sense for them to get their oil from a trusted, liberal democracy than allow a country like China to buy it. Canada isn't the one who's launching cyber attacks on their defence systems.
The oil is coming out of the ground whether the environmentalists like it or not. GO Transit doesn't have solar powered trains. They run on DIESEL. Alberta will find a buyer for that oil. Unfortunately it's probably not going to be our friends in the US.
You can thank Obama for that.

That's the point of why I slathered three dozen independently self-posted modestly unobtrusive ad-icons over my blog banner. Unpaid and untested, I've actually had a General Motors Canada brand icon with link postioned at the top-left corner (and also on the bottom page banner). This has been in place for a couple of years already. Honda's logo is also listed along the bottom banner, btw.
For the price of what? a daily coffee (or a windy day round of half-course golf, or a car race ticket). Now, imagine if my site had traffic, such as at a popular(!) media site page. Imagine if I embedded additional unobtrusive ads specifically placed into every individual article subpage. Imagine if I were to update these same ad spots - requiring minutes of unqualifed personal labour. Imagine what any professional department could attempt.
Instead we have a failed internet system where every media company loses tons of missing ad-revenue money where nothing but easy to avoid common Google ad-boxes are considered compulsory for every web site.

Try this next time you go to a friend's place for a barbecue, or dinner or whatever. It's fun.

When having people over, good host(s) typically put a lot of planning into the day. It means spending a lot of time preparing appetizers, serving drinks and prepping the main meal.

So, enjoy the typical friendly chatting prior to eating. Perhaps you're all in the back yard relaxing, while the hosts are busy preparing and serving food. In this case, let's say the main meal consists of a whack of bbq ribs, coleslaw, beans and corn.

So it comes time for them to serve the food. Plates are put out, everyone's hungry and as all the food is put in front of everyone, guests will gush and say "wow this looks great", a nice gesture to reinforce the hard work the hosts have put into the meal.

Then, and you must time this delivery for the precise moment, say this, sounding a little sheepish but serious:

"Um...yea..ahh...do you have any cheeseburgers?"

If done correctly, what will follow will be an extremely awkward pause by everyone. Time will stop. In an instant, your hosts minds will instantly fill with rage, thinking "Are you fucking kidding me right now!"

Continue to play it as you're actually serious for about another 10 seconds, then, wait..wait for everyone to realize that this has just been a massive mind-fuck, playing on the psychology of the whole situation.

Laughs should follow.

A good friend of mine came up with this and did it to me a couple of years back. We were at a family cottage and i got up extra early to bust my nuts making breakfast for everyone. My wife was also busy making food, coffee, etc. We made sausage, eggs, homefries, etc and when we put it out he said: "Umm..where's the bacon?"

Give it a shot. It's fantastically awkward.

Really? Are you elvis, or Corey?
I have had a General Motors logo image with a direct GM.ca link at my page for two years. I have 36 such business logos, or ad-icons.
In a real ad space, when GM advertises in a physical newspaper, or on TV and the radio, consumers do not directly "click" to their website. They absorb the marketing as they enjoy the main content. Then they consider making a purchase afterwards. GM's sales go up, they pay a negotiated advertising price for having their ads placed into specific newspapers and TV shows.
Even with my out-of-date browser, I can entirely skip your standardized Adsense boxes and never notice hidden links. If you had a visible GM logo, and multiple John Q. Public's visited this site repeatedly - every John Q. would start thinking of buying a GM car.

Just noticed the part up top where you invite new people to participate - that's exactly what's needed here. Some less jaded people than ourselves - if they exist, that is.

Going to the Forest Hill Garden Tour tomorrow with my dear 70-something year old friend. I hope to hell that some sweet soul will make the time for me like this in another 30 years. We'll have a wonderful day - and I'll feel like a shit that she and I don't spend more time together. Perhaps in the fall when The Kid is away at school. Enjoy the people you love while they're here.

Have a great weekend, everyone

I wasn't trying to be snarky, I honestly couldn't figure out your point... your writing style tends to "bury the lead".

If I'm hearing you correctly, you're saying that it's easy to ignore ads on a site, but it's hard to ignore logos in the header.

A few things:

- The Google Adsense model is very targeted and simple, and they always pay on time. Google's essentially a broker here, connecting me with advertisers and paying me when an ad on this site is clicked.

- The awareness campaign you describe is impossible to measure. How do you tie the purchase to the ad on this site? You really can't, so GM pays for awareness campaigns based on reach. An ad during HNIC will reach X eyeballs. I don't believe GM is running awareness campaigns on blogs, but I do know they do a lot of PPC work with Google and have seen their ad on my site when I've written about Chevy.

Why are you running unpaid ads? If you're not making a cent, wouldn't it be better for readers if you had no ads?

Are you measuring click-thrus? How do you know whether your two-year old GM ad has ever been clicked?

I wish there would still be more hockey after this. I hate baseball.

1) If I was a business, I wouldn't put my advertising into the hands of someone else's brokering. If I were GM, I would pay for a placement directly at a major media website.
2) Online customer awareness needs a spark. If I were the Star or the Sun, I would attempt to copy and squeeze every print ad into their online space. Do this for every main page and with every article sub page. Then I would charge for that - after it is established. That is why I am running unpaid ads (or just simple logo graphics). It is only a testing to me. At least major and local businesses should try to advertise online to the masses!
3) It would be better if I had readers, too. I don't know if that GM ad on my site has ever been clicked. If suddenly 10,000 people showed up at a dealership - and admitted to enjoying my content... How does any business know if a TV ad is successful? Customers will show up and their motivations are discovered.

1. That's not how Adwords works... you bid on keywords and fully control whether your ad appears on the search network or the content network (or both). You can not appear on certain sites or during certain parts of the day or in certain geographic regions. And, you can tie the click to a conversion, and adjust your bidding accordingly. And best of all, you can measure the shit out of it all.

2. Visitors don't like ads, so if there's no money coming from the ad, I don't think a site should display them. The exception might be an ad for a charity or PSA.

3. If a tree falls in the forest, and all that.... Nobody will pay a penny for an awareness campaign on an unestablished site until they've seen the traffic stats....

From the Sun, Rob Ford's favorite newspaper, here’s a rundown of questions the mayor still refuses to answer:

- Have you ever smoked crack cocaine?

- Have you used any illegal drugs while in office?

- How do you know murder victim Anthony Smith?

- What are the circumstances around that photograph of you and Anthony Smith?

- If that is where the photo was taken, why were you at the house on 15 Windsor Road?

- How do you know the family that lives at 15 Windsor Rd.?

- Why did your former chief of staff Mark Towhey want you to go to rehab?

- Why did your two spokesmen quit just days after you gave your only statement about the crack allegations?

- Why are you so confident there is no video of you smoking crack cocaine?

- Did you tell your staff that the video could be found at a Dixon Rd. apartment building?

- Is there “anything else” that residents should know about you?

Good Afternoon/Evening TorontoMike.com

It has been brought to our attention that several individuals on this blog are making claims that "Irvine" has been posting on this blog. These scurrilous claims are simply personal attacks by the right wing faction on this forum. There is no truth to these claims nor is their a post (or video) as evidence with the name Irvine attached to it. Irvine refrained from using the term maggots because as a former fisherman maggots made for some great bait. I quote:

Also, for the record, I have not, nor would I ever, defend the Star. It's a rag that is more interested in sensationalism than reporting news. That doesn't mean that Ford is a good mayor, just that the Star is a bad paper.

Comments by Mark and I are not criticisms of the Star. Its all pertaining to the ignorant comments by its readers.

June 7, 2013 @ 3:13 PM

@Argie: You'll have to take my word for it since I didn't post here at the time, but I used to defend Ford in my circles. I always thought the fat jokes were low-blows and thought he had a lot of potential to do a lot of good for the city.

It's just over the past two years, his obnoxiousness has worn me down to apathy. He also put his weight on the agenda with his very public Cut the Waist campaign. At the time, I thought that was extremely brave of him, and would do a lot to improve his reputation, putting himself in the spotlight like that... well he also very publicly gave up. Wynne (to my knowledge) hasn't made a spectacle of the fact that she's a lesbian.

For what it's worth, I'm also sick and tired of this crack video news cycle. It's just being dragged out forever. At this point I'm resigned to Ford getting away with it, and just want to move on. But every day some new detail emerges dragging my attention back to it. Might be time to take a break from the internet and get a book read.

@Toronto Mike

To be honest, I kind of hate ... dislike the vast majority of Star columnists. I just like it for local news really. To be fair, I think I dislike/disagree with most columnists.

I haven't been a fan of newspapers for ages, though I guess I rely on them for a composite of opinions when I read news online. As in, they're the ones generating much of the content (and should probably be compensated for it somehow).

@Argie, I was criticising the Star specifically for making a story out of an office dress code. I think that part's ridiculous.

Ford has scheduled another press conference for 4pm.

This really irks me... he never used to do this but ever since this crack scandal broke he does this almost every day. He'll talk about something else, take questions and completely ignore any question relevant to the ongoing scandal.

It's clearly his plan to "look like everything's normal" and show his base he's working hard.

I wish the Mayor would answer the 15 or so good and fair questions that have been raised over the past few weeks. Instead, he treats us like idiots with this useless pressers and that eyeroll sigh when the media asks him a question Torontonians actually want answered.

He's more than a terrible leader and huge distraction, he's an insult to our collective intelligence.

I'm with you Mike, I think TheStar is still the best paper in the nation, nobody comes close in the news department than TheStar. The G&M is okay but their department has been cut back a lot, ThePost has always been columnist heavy & it's more like talkradio on print. The Sun is well the Sun, they have some okay field reporters(Mandel, Peat) but again mostly opinion pieces. TheSTar the only paper that has some sort of investigative journalist. National CBC & CTV/W5 can be good at times. Local Global is okay. But other local TV news is really thin (to put it nicely), lets not even talk how bad news radio is.

Look at this Ford video story, from my understanding many media outlets had the chance to get it, none of them had the guts or the resources to follow up on the tip like the Star did(yet still have the nerve to be critical) Ford likes to tell his minions how the Star doesn't' have credibility, well I'll counter that by saying, look how every other international news followed the Star story from CNN to Fox, from USAtoday to NYTimes. They wouldn't run with the story if there's not respect for The Star work. Like it or not, the Star (and some extent theGlobe) are the paper of record for this country.

I will agree with Argie on something, Spring/Fall is my favorite seasons.

It was interesting reading your top five viewed days. The Streek story is understandable. He was a standout music radio personality, his weekend overnights live club remotes was my favorite music radio show during the 90s era, when I was most into music. But I do have to ask, what on earth caused the Aug 25/09 views? Was your Step Brothers review that huge, or was it a lot of angry Kiss fans from Oshawa?

There is a pretty cool Blues festival in Mt. Tremblant each July if anyone is interested. I have been a few times, it is very well organized, has a great vibe and several stages. It is in and around the ski village, you can easily walk to each stage, and at night all the bars have bands playing. Take your own chairs and coolers. Lot's of food options around, and they have a SAQ on site (like LCBO)

Some good acts this year, and all performances are free.

We usually go every year for that festival at Tremblant - it's a great time. The past few years we've gotten one of the rooms at the Homewood Suites that overlooks the courtyard, which is great because it has a balcony that we can sit out and listen to the music at night and enjoy a few drinks bought from the lovely SAQ you mentioned.

My son and I really love hiking up the mountain and watching the birds of prey show. He also loves the mountain sleds and the waterpark.

It's a great time and the music is always outstanding, even if I can't understand the lyrics sometimes.

Cheers,
Andrew

I saw a new Coke commercial (the security cameras) at the movies yesterday. YouTube it.. for 1:30 you'll have a happy sense of good humans.

I saw and chatted with George yesterday (true story). I forgot to ask him if he knew Cheryl. Dammit!

Our hottest day of the year so far down here. We are supposed to hit 111F, which is about 43C. Your chilly weather seems much better now, doesn't it?

@elvis

Damn! I *really* want to know if George remembers Cheryl.

----

We have 14C and rain.

My son and his classmates just finished up the 30 hour famine their school does every year for Grade 8 kids. My wife and I volunteered to help set up their light lunch, which consisted of fruits, muffins, and juice. I think the message sunk in with some of them. It's a good cause.

Shortly we are off to Canadian Tire to get a shop vac, kitty treats, and a few other things on the list they likely won't have.

I can't believe that George Smitherman is really on this blog. It's someone just typing the name George Smitherman. Look, he doesn't know me well. I only met him a couple of times.

Anyway, the Hawks are winning 2 to 0. They'll get this game, but they won't beat the Bruins. The Bruins will get the cup.

4x4 Time

I was born and raised in Toronto, but now live in Burlington. I spend a lot of time, both personal and business in Toronto. Today I spent the day all over the city and went to the Bloor Street Theatre to see the Levon Helm documentary. Some observations -
1. Great Venue to see a show. Terrific if not sad documentary.
2. I love the Bloor Annex area
3. I really dig the vibe of the downtown people..Fuck Rob Ford or any other Mayor and all the other politicians. Toronto is, and always will be the people that live there and make it a cool city.
4. I wish I lived back on Dunn street where I grew up.

Have a nice Sunday everyone...

Well, the hockey finals start Wednesday. I don't get this. Why can't there be a game on Friday as well. That makes sense because the others are every two days. Thing is that I have something I just planned a month ago for June 15. Now they decided to put a hockey game on that day instead of the Friday before. I don't know how much of the game I'll have to miss, but I don't want one on that day. Why did Betman decide to put the game on that day. I have no idea.

Anyway, the last game is on June 26. That means no hockey the last four days in June as well. Then there's boring baseball. I am not going to a game let alone an extra long game. This is it. Baseball is so slow and long. Why can't we have hockey in July, August and September as well.

It's called facility availability.

That is all.

@Chery,

We'll I'm shocked Bettman didn't consult you at The Funny Farm while putting the schedule together. I think he, your trainer and Santa Claus were meeting to develop an exit strategy.

You know what else is boring? Your 'cut and paste' repetitive bullshit.

You sweet fella! You can't apply logic where logic just won't go.

I am not a big hockey fan, but have been around long enough to remember the "Original Six"...My buddy tells me the Hawks and Bruins have NEVER played for the Cup...I dig this...If it is true..

@4x4 Time

It's true... the Habs and Leafs were playing in far too many finals to let the Hawks and Bruins go at it.

June 9, 2013 @ 7:46 PM

Jason from Sudbury

Go Hawks! That is all.

AWESOME!!!!!!!I say Go Hawks, because I dig the Uniforms!

I'm rooting for the Hawks as well because I hate the Bruins.

Santa Claus? There's no such thing as Santa Claus. Anyway, I have something planned for Saturday evening which I can't change. It was planned a month ago. For your information, I don't cut and paste everything. Oh well, the Bruins are going to win the cup. They'll beat the Hawks in seven games. The last game is June 26.

Mike but this is so silly of the Star! Why don't they use dashes! You should tell them.

Love the Star, but the iPad app is still awful. And weird stuff always happens when I try to tweet an article.

I think my new name for you is Eeyore- Eeyore on A Loop = EOAL.

Of course Santa Claus is real.

June 10, 2013 @ 8:18 AM

Cheryl

No, Santa Claus is not real. Anyway, do we have to talk about him now. It's June. Christmas will be here soon enough. Just look out for the Bruins because they are going to win the cup.

@ Cheryl -

1)Santa is real
2)Smitherman is a crook
3)Your trainer plays shuffleboard (accept it!)
4)The Hawks will win the cup

...end of transmission

@Mississauga Phil

You, my friend, are THE man! You get it - you really get it (even if my sentiments elude you know who - hee hee).

Small correction on #2 - it's actually Smithershit. A crook? Oh, you want to believe it. The one art he did perfect.

Wouldn't it have been fun to be in that meeting with Bettman, The Trainer and Santa Claus?

For some reason, I keep thinking about some of the great lines Jack had in One Flew Over The Cukoo's Nest - "...it's not your goddamned turn, Martini!" Or, "...you want to watch a little baseball, don't cha?"

Ah, what a world we live in, eh?
