A day late and a dollar short! :)

The big news today of course is that it looks like the famous "video" is gone. "Gone" is the word the crack dealers used but that word can also apply to the careers of Doolittle and Donavan - after the Star settles a million dollar libel suit with the mayor.

At the very least it should shut them up for a while.

There will never be a lawsuit from Ford, and we both know why. Doolittle and Donavan are fine... they reported exactly what they witnessed and I trust them both.

As for the video being "gone", who knows what that means. Your guess is as good as mine...

As I've said before, I don't need to see the video. And as days go by, I'm more and more convinced that the 30% that is Ford Nation wouldn't be swayed one way or another. This 30% will support Ford know matter what, so I've decided to just talk to the 70%.

June 5, 2013 @ 9:50 AM

Another Lurker

Is there a tape?

Who the fuck knows!

Was there a tape?

Of course there was - these three journalists didn't lie.

Does it matter?

It shouldn't! If you still support this mayor, nothing will ever dissuade you. With or without the tape, Ford's done next election. He's a walking disaster.

June 5, 2013 @ 9:54 AM

Even if the two reporters swear it was Ford to their dying day, the public or the police haven't seen the video thus their credibility has taken a huge shot.

In Doolittle's case, she didn't have that much to begin with. She's better suited for TV anyway (cute but lacking brains).

June 5, 2013 @ 9:55 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I respectfully could not disagree with you more.

I don't see how their credibility takes a hit if we don't see the video. Based on your offensive comment about Doolittle, it's clear you're just trolling again.

I've got to learn to stop biting.

June 5, 2013 @ 10:03 AM

I gave her a compliment along with my criticism of her credentials. I'm simply stating an opinion and a fact, I believe in that the Star reporters' credibility will be harmed. Have you ever heard of Dan Rather???

So no, I'm not trolling. I post way too many times to be considered a troll. You should know that.

No comment.... you're that 30% who will vote Ford no matter what.

I'll bet 30% of people also:

- don't believe man landed on the moon
- think 9/11 was an inside job
- believe vaccinations cause autism
- take the bible literally

June 5, 2013 @ 10:11 AM

I recently read an excellent article about why people believe conspiracy theories.

I'll dig up that link and come back to post it.

It basically said it was insecurity. Insecurity causes people to believe in conspiracy theories.

Suggesting the Star and Gawker conspired to make up these details they saw on film is such a conspiracy theory that will attract the grossly insecure, like Argie.

June 5, 2013 @ 10:15 AM

Journalism has taken a big hit in Toronto due to the shoddy handling of the Allegations against Mayor Ford.
No video, no proof, and a shameful fund raising campaign to get the so called video and give $200,000.00 to drug dealers. The people who donated to that fund are either stupid, rich,or so anti Ford that I would suggest they are guilty of all three.

June 5, 2013 @ 10:16 AM

So Kevin, I'm insecure because I believe the reporters' credibility will come into question because of this journalistic fiasco? You see how stupid your comment looks when posed to you by another person.

I'm actually the furthest thing from a conspiracy theorist. Conspiracy types tend to reside on the left side of the political spectrum. They tend to blame the US, Israel, the Catholic Church, etc for anything that goes wrong in the world. I happen to embrace those aforementioned entities.

June 5, 2013 @ 10:29 AM

Al Reda

To leave Ford behind (wishful thinking?)...

Yesterday was the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. Let's never take our freedoms for granted.

June 5, 2013 @ 10:31 AM

3 reporters reporting what they saw does not at all depend on the video getting released.

They're two mutually exclusive events. Their credibility was many years in the making.

June 5, 2013 @ 10:33 AM

I'll confess I know very little about this Cooke guy from gawker. As for Donavan, he has an impressive resume but Doolittle doesn't have much to her name. Her previous expose (along with Donavan), blew up in her face when they had no proof Ford was hammered and asked to leave a special function.

Her interview with Bill Carroll a few months ago was laughable. She made Sarah Palin look like a Rhodes scholar.

June 5, 2013 @ 10:42 AM

I spoke to an experienced lawyer who says Ford doesn't only have grounds to sue the Star and Gawker but that he would win.

I'm not going to get into the legal spew he gave me but this is the gist of it: For the Star to win a libel suit they would have to prove, beyond reasonable doubt, that the allegations against Ford are true. This would have to involve all their anonymous sources coming forward to the public and testifying in court about what they saw. Not likely to happen.

Ford won't sue them for political reasons and the fact that it would be a complete mess, but he has more than legitimate grounds to nail the Toronto Star to the wall in court.

June 5, 2013 @ 10:43 AM

Request for Toronto Mike:

A Ford-free Open Mike. We're so sick of this guy... he won't go away on his own, so we'll vote him out in 2014. Until then, he's just obnoxious noise with this obnoxious defenders.

Nobody I know found it difficult to believe our mayor smoked crack... what does that tell you? It would blow our minds to learn Harper smoked crack.

Does anyone have anything not Ford to say?

June 5, 2013 @ 10:45 AM

I'm so sick of this Ford stuff. He should resign. Just resign and we'll get George Smitherman to run. That would make things better, believe me.

Anyway, another game tonight. The Bruins are going to win tonight. The Bruins are so much better than the Pens. They are a great team and they are going to win the cup. They could win it in four, but the Kings and Hawks series is probably going to go longer. Hockey in July sounds great. There has to be something more than boring baseball.

June 5, 2013 @ 10:46 AM

Not true... the Star merely accounted the facts they knew to be true. That they saw the video and what they saw. There's no libel because they didn't lie.

June 5, 2013 @ 10:48 AM

On May 23 I decided to try and stop writing entries about the Ford brothers for that exact reason. I think he's a terrible mayor without the ridiculous sideshow antics and constant lies.... there was so many negative stories coming from his office, I thought I'd try and stop posting about them.

I've been successful except for one entry about the "$1 billion" bullshit claim I keep hearing from both Rob and Doug. I felt compelled to point out the complete lack of reasonable math behind that claim... these two lie as naturally as they breath.

So if some Ford talk seeps into an Open Mike, I'm okay with that. It is the biggest story in this city these days. I won't initiate the chatter... as you'll see here, Argie started it.... but I'm okay with responding.

On a non-Ford note, I'm looking forward to seeing the Jays game on Saturday with my brothers and son.

June 5, 2013 @ 10:55 AM

Since you brought up the Jays, Mike, I thought it worth point out that the improved play by our boys of summer has us losing 5 of our last 7 games.

Everything is relative, so compared to the first month of the season our 4-6 record in our last 10 games is good.

But it's not good. It's bad. We've gone from terrible to bad. Mike, your $50 bet with your brother is taking candy from a baby!

June 5, 2013 @ 11:03 AM

This just in: The Jays suck. Enjoy the game anyway.

As for Ford, yeah it is getting tiresome but I brought it up simply because it is news - that Gawker was told the video may be no more.

As for the "sideshow" as you put it, most of it has been created out of thin air by the reporters at the Star. Thus far, no proof so you can't really blame Ford for this nonsense. But I know, you will anyway.

As for being a terrible mayor, fiscally the city is doing quite well so technically he and his staff are doing a pretty good job. I only wish he would contract more jobs to screw the unions even more.

Anyway, I'm getting tired defending Ford - even though it is quite easy.

June 5, 2013 @ 11:05 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

There's a reason Ford's staffers have resigned on principle - or been fired for disagreeing with Ford's response to these allegations. There's much more here than a mayor lying about smoking crack. There are so many straws here the camel's back blew out long ago.

But one entry in 2 weeks tells you how tired I am of this Ford ordeal. And it's not at all a Star thing.... I've read editorials in the Sun, Post, Globe and elsewhere saying Ford should step down as mayor. But he won't because he doesn't care about this city.

As for the Jays, I've never liked this team.... I think it's a bad team and wrote after two weeks that they weren't going to make the playoffs.

Yes, I made a $50 bet with my brother that the Jays wouldn't make the playoffs. Unfortunately, that's going to be easy money for me. I just hope we win big on Saturday.

June 5, 2013 @ 11:34 AM

@ Mike -

Although you say you don't need to see the video, I say it's the only thing that would get Ford to resign. The video exists, and Ford should resign regardless of what he was smoking, just based on who he was fraternizing with. The only way that has a chance of happening is if the video is shown.

June 5, 2013 @ 11:40 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I think the folks who "need to see the video" would just find another reason to support Ford if the video came out. Maybe they'd say it was doctored or they'd say he wasn't smoking crack but something else or they'd say he wasn't calling Justin Trudeau a "fag" but a "flag" or maybe a "frag" which they'll say is slang for Fraggle Rock fan....

The 30% he has is the 30% he'll keep. So long as there aren't too many viable candidates in 2014 to split the remaining 70%, he's as good as gone.

@Mike -

If the video comes out, it won't matter what the 30% think. There will be so much political pressure put on him, especially behind closed doors from powerful Conservatives that will want to minimize damage, that Ford will have no choice but to step down. The only thing keeping him in office is the fact that the video is missing.

Mike...waiting for your post on the Ontario Liberal government and the story that came out today on deleting emails and covering up which was deemed illegal. Quote from the Sun....

"Senior Ontario Liberal political staff were breaking the law when they hit delete on emails that could have shed light on why the government cancelled two gas plants at a cost of $585 million, Information and Privacy Commissioner Dr. Ann Cavoukian says."

Should anyone resign or should we just ignore this story?

June 5, 2013 @ 1:54 PM

Another scandal to keep in mind for when provincial elections come up: Liberal staffers deleted all the emails involved in the $585M power plant closures. Honestly this sort of crime deserves jail time. Incredibly corrupt and undemocratic.

@Toronto Mike -- go figure. I should really add Reddit to my routine, but I barely have enough time to keep up with the content I already follow.

June 5, 2013 @ 2:18 PM

Here is my theory as to why the ford video is gone. When the whole Ford smoking crack video first broke, there was talk that the people who had the video as sold crack to a number of other Toronto A listers. What this tells me is that the dealers in this case are not just corner kids or street dealers but someone further up the food chain with some power and influence in the drug game but probably not at the top of the food chain. I assume that they figured they would be able to make a quick buck with the video when they first started shopping it around. Once the story broke and the cash for the video did not appear right away and there became more focus on trying to contact the dealers I assume the dealers boss (the Stringer Bell/Avon Barksdale figure) stepped in and told them to get rid or destroy or say the video is gone. The top guys would understand that the quick money for the video is not worth the amount of police pressure that would be put on busting crack dealers if the mayor was busted for smoking crack. More dealers getting busted, less profits for the guys on top.

June 5, 2013 @ 2:21 PM

@ Markosaar- I'm curious what you thought specific about the Selly NP article. I thought it was pretty decent as well. I like the comment that the apologetic media created a monster. The legit Star story about Ford buying parkland & a reporter going there to check out the distinces, 100% legit reporting. Yet Ford out right lied about Dale being in "his property" & peeking in. The media allowed Ford to accuse Dale but never called Ford out when it turened out to be a lie by Ford. Adding some (including Blatchford from NP) was critical of TheStar for doing real work. Pushing this false reality of "Unfair treatment of Ford"

@Kevin- good article about conspiarcy theories, there certainly something there, especially with blaming faceless organazation out to get them "Social elites". But I view Ford nation more like "cult members". If you follow cult members, they are normally normal people who are willing to block their logicial thougths out at the expense of their leader. He literally convinced people he's a "regular hard working guy" when in reality he's a trust fund millionaire. It's classic cult leader/follower relatinship, the follower can't see reality even if it's right in front of their eyes.

I keep hearing "no video, no proof" and I wonder, is those same standards you have for EVERY news story. There a story that broke today about MLB players being on a list of a steriod distributor, is that not a story? Is it only a story when Arod has a video with a niddle going in his butt? How about Lance Armstrong, there no video of him, but there was journalist investigation of it, and logicial people (including media people who are now saying, no video no proof) to almost a man thought there's proof of Armstrong juiced, but there was no video. We have had the ability to look at other things in that situation.

This is obviously still a story. When TIME magazien is still writing about it, it's still a story. What a quote in this article from a Ford nation supporter " “I’d much rather a crack addict... than some Ivy League nepotist scum any day" So this guy rather support a drop out nepotist scum? I hate people like this, jealous and hates intelligence but these dirtbags will be the first in line for the "Ivy league" doctor to save their pathetic lives.

June 5, 2013 @ 2:34 PM

I don't get why you guys give Mike such a hard time on his choice of what he writes about -- it's his personal blog, not some news source pretending to be fair and balanced.

I'm forced to conclude you're basically trolls because there are so many conservative blogs with comment sections like Small Dead Animals, Five Feet of Fury or Ezra Levant's, that espouse values much more congruent to your own.

Yup, my wife and I were talking about that very thing last night. High level dealer, but not high enough to call such an important matter. A bigger fish shut them down. It would, however, be niave to think the video was destroyed. It's way too easy to make copies these days. So the question is -- when does a free copy magically appear? One week? One month? Right before election time?

Both my son and I read Reddit. My favourite is Today I Learned and his favourite is the pic section. Some of those sub-reddits can be rather vile if you're not careful with your reading.

I have a pet peeve regarding the Toronto Star and how they publish their URLs.

They use underscores between words and not dashes (full disclosure: I use underscores as well) and that creates some long ass URLs. The real long ones mess up my HTML because they force this column wider.

Dashes wrap... underscores do not. I wish the Star would switch to dashes.

June 5, 2013 @ 2:41 PM

@Tron: I just tend to agree with Selley's opinions more often than not.

In this particular article:
- I liked his explanation for die-hard Ford voters, using the "backfire effect".
- The point about Canadians' low esteem for the media. I also think it's crazy 45% of those polled honestly believe that two reporters would risk their reputations and careers making up the video.
- The point that the media should have probably pulled some punches along the way to avoid the appearance of ganging up on Ford.

I agree with his (to my perception) even-handedness, like sure it was fair for people to pursuit the conflict-of-interest and campaign-overspending complaints against Ford, but that, "both would have been terrible reasons to overturn the 2010 vote."

I'm not a Ford-hater, and hell, at the beginning I thought he had a tonne of potential (no pun intended...), but over time he's worn me down. It's funny, I feel like a left-winger here, but amongst my peers I'm usually the only right-wing one.

June 5, 2013 @ 2:47 PM

@Blind Dave

Eh, I've been online since '94, nothing shocks me. The reason I don't read Reddit is that I read a tonne of blogs through Google Reader, and the somethingawful forums. SA is kind of reddit-like in its content, but a different, older, format that appeals to me more.

June 5, 2013 @ 2:53 PM

Tron writes: "If you follow cult members, they are normally normal people who are willing to block their logicial thougths out at the expense of their leader"

That pretty much describes followers of Obama and Trudeau (for Cdn content).

June 5, 2013 @ 2:53 PM

@markosaar- Thanks for the reply, your right Selley pretty good columnist, he made some good points on both sides. I have seen a pattern with Ford. He loves attacking people (Integrity Commissioner, media, political opposition) so he can act as much of a dirt bag as possible, and then when those people call him on it, his defense can be "Oh they are just getting back at me" His playbook is really obvious.

By the way totally agree, the most obnoxious thing about reading replies here are the people angry at what Mike writes, it's his blog, if he thinks Ford story is important to right in detail, that's up to him. If you want a Ford fart catcher out there, there's 90% of talk radio out there for you.

@Gary- McGuinty did resign, the power plant story has always been front of mind in every newspaper including the Star for a while now. The no media coverup of this story. Far from it.

@Argie- You got to help me out, can you tell me an example that a large percentage of supports of either man denied reality like the Fordites do? When somebody said Obama a smoker, I didn't hear a bunch of people freaking out calling those reports lies like i heard about Rob Ford drinking when obviously Rob drinks a lot. Or when Justin is said not to have a lot of experience, that's understandable with his supporters, but they don't make up a resume like Fordites do with "Rob ford a self made man" when he never held a job that didn't involve his dad pulling the strings in the private sector.

June 5, 2013 @ 3:13 PM

June 5, 2013 @ 3:41 PM

Well Tron despite your many spelling and grammatical errors I think I can "help you out".

For Obama: the recent IRS and Benghazi scandals are two recent and obvious examples. Of course there was that Church he attended for several years that had a racist, misogynist Pastor as well. His peeps and many in the media gave him a free ride on that one too.

Trudeau: Your boy is a joke (not quite a man yet as we're still waiting for that darn lisp to go away). Yes, his inexperience is ignored by the clueless 20 somethings who make up most of his base along with the aging hippie crowd. Also, the many times he's misspoken which is almost every time he opens his mouth. Oh and what's with the head moving from side to side when he really trying to make a point. Check that out next time you seem him stumbling over his words.

You see, if a voter (lefty or right wing) loves a candidate there's almost anything they can do and get away with it. As I've previously wrote, if Ford did smoke crack with those criminals, he should step down. However, I don't think he will.

I've been stating this for years - the free car rentals, not the mayor.
If I'm counting right, this week's mention (if just one for Summer '13) makes ten weekly (Jun-Sep) Ford rentals since 2008. One from Mercedes Benz (Smart car). Two test drive events (Bobcaygeon / Ottawa, 2012/13) with General Motors. An opening season Leafs vs. Habs hockey ticket, another NHL game from the press box, in-season camping gear from Cdn Tire. A Dell laptop. A few tablet machines. Yearly Ford Corp. of Canada winter party invites - incl. after this January's Burke-Mae story discussion.

@Blind Dave (12:15) Eight years. Odd that GM would include a upscale whisky tasting with its test drive promotion.

@TorontoMike. Be rebellious. Post a photo of your new bride driving the Ford rental (or the Chevolet). I've read Ford Canada's other social marketing with a few of the popular mommy bloggers. Almost always it is never anything but a 'Women's Conference' and a typical sideline shoe sale. I think 'Lena' may have once gotten a late January rental, lol.

To divert from the Fords: I think the effing Liberals have teflon on their party. Shite is just not sticking to them like Rob Ford. I don't know if it's scandal fatigue on the part of the Liberals that has over whelmed us, I just can't wrap my brain around it. Have to had it to Wynne, she is a smooth operator. Hopefully Torontonians will see the light and give the provincial liberals a drubbing next election. I'm red Tory, but just can't feel the love toward Hudak. Only if John Tory would run for the Tories, just make sure he doesn't mention ethnically based school funding, and he would be a shoe in.

WRT the Liberal scandal, not only should any elected official be turfed and charged for deleting emails, the IT staff that did not have a system in place to prevent that from happening should also be dismissed.

There are software/hardware solutions available to preserve all emails in such environments, trading floors, banks, etc all have regulations requiring them to maintain these messages, but somehow the people that govern our way of life are allowed to by pass that same basic requirement.

I'm with 4x4, I own my own business, my wife owns her's as well, fall is our get away vacation time and summer we do short trips. We will hit Algonguin a few times, 1 day, over night maybe even a 3 day canoe trip. Just came back from 4 days in the Bahamas and will probably be back there by September.

I understand the RedBlacks was the 3rd place pick as the Ottawa DBags and the Ottawa Who gizzash*t were both rejected by the league.

At least they didn't go with Ottawa Huskies.

I really really hate to say this but CCheryl just might be right about Boston. Pittsburg put on a good effort last night but in the end the Bruins won in double overtime which really sucks.

Looks like the Pens are done and will soon be off to the golf course along with my Habs so it's go Hawks for me now.

Look, I happen to like George Smitherman. He is a nice guy. I met him. I never met Ford, but I don't want to and I heard enough about ford.

I know the Pens are done. I wanted it to go seven games so there would be lots of hockey, but I don't think it will. Anyway, the Hawks won't win either. The Bruins will win.

As for the Jays, they suck. Baseball sucks. I say I like the Diamondbacks when asked though because they're from Arizona. I know they're doing better than the Jays, thank goodness, but baseball is boring.

I won't be buying that album. I don't like Blood Sweat and Tears. Bob Seger is better any day.
