It was fireworks followed by thunder. A great night to cap a fantastic long weekend.

The Kickstarter/IndieGoGo fund to buy Rob Fords crack tape seems to be unsuccessful.

Probably a good thing. I was uncomfortable with giving loads of money to a crack dealer.

May 21, 2013 @ 9:29 AM

4x4 Time

Is it just me or are garden Flowers, dirt and shrubs etc. a lot more expensive this year. Even herbs, usually I plant a section each May 24 weekend, it costs me about $20.00. This year, $35.00 for the same stuff?

@Icarus

I feel the same way. I said on Friday I wouldn't give a penny to this fund and I'm actually glad it will fall short.

Personally, I don't feel the need to see it. I thought Kevin Donovan and Robyn Doolittle did a great job describing the video they watched three times each. I wouldn't give drug dealers $20 to see it myself.

May 21, 2013 @ 9:34 AM

markosaar

Also glad they won't get funded.

There's some anonymous comment going around online claiming that the police have seen the video anyway, and are building a case against Rob + Doug Ford based on other corroborating evidence, Who knows.

I do think it's odd that the Ford camp has been more silent about this one than any other controversy.

May 21, 2013 @ 9:46 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@markosaar

Anonymous comments I take with a massive grain of salt.

Ford's going to talk in an hour and I suspect he'll deny everything, claim he's never touched crack in his life and tell Ford Nation that this is all a left wing conspiracy led by the Star to bring him down, completely ignoring the fact Gawker broke the story in the first place.

May 21, 2013 @ 9:49 AM

Argie

I know I'm a Ford backer but I suspect Ford will likely come clean today. What if he says he tried crack once and that was it. Most experts don't think its possible for an overweight man like Ford to be a chronic crack user - he would look completely different.

If that's the truth should be resign because he tried it just once? I don't think he should.

May 21, 2013 @ 9:58 AM

@Argie

So you're okay with Toronto's mayor hanging with drug dealers, calling Trudeau a "fag" and Don Bosco students "just fucking minorities"?

I think you're in the minority.

May 21, 2013 @ 10:07 AM

Argie

Mike,

I'm OK with the final two.

As for the first one, if this happened just once and he apologizes, he should stay on.

I'm just glad you won't get to vote in 2014.

May 21, 2013 @ 10:14 AM

Argie

I might just move back to Toronto just in time to vote.

Do you have a candidate in mind who would do a better job than Ford? And please don't say "anyone".

May 21, 2013 @ 10:22 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie - Pinball baby!!!

And if you're okay with the Mayor of Toronto referring to people as "fags" and "a bunch of minorities" then maybe you should think bout moving somewhere more central-europeanish where such behavior is still tolerated in some circles. We, in the more enlightened Great White North, prefer to not have racists and homophobes running our cities...

Too early for that discussion. I'd never say "anyone", but I suspect it won't be hard to find someone more capable and interested in leading this city.

Unfortunately the more Ford stays silent on this one the more he looks guilty.
Even Doug isn't commenting on this one.
Sad.

@Argie: You're kidding right. So a middle aged man is allowed to hit the crack pipe once to try it? That isn't a concern? How about intravenous drugs? Why not kill a racconn? Forget that he should go for some bigger game. Let him take down a human!! As long as it's only once and he admits to it.

At this point anyone would be better than Ford. Based on his record I think there are 12 year olds that would make better decisions and throw less temper tantrums.

I mean there are a number of ways to pick a part what you wrote, but how could you believe him if he said he only hung around drug dealers once? What he just stumbled onto their party while he was out putting magnets on cars?

@ Phil: You even thing it's a surprise that Rob is homophobic and a racist? That is something well known. I believe it's probably the exact reason Argie would vote for him. So it was pointless for you to verify if he's ok with a mayor that says such things.

May 21, 2013 @ 10:50 AM

Quite the day here in Canada for politicos!

There's Rob Ford's statement, the casino debate, Harper's handling of the Duffy affair and Horvath's decision to support the Liberal budget.

Who says politics are boring?

May 21, 2013 @ 10:52 AM

No Dope

Oh to be a rich white man in Toronto. I can only dream....

Ford was born into a life of privilege and continues to live in a fantasy world without accountability or ramifications.

The buck stops here, Ford-o!

May 21, 2013 @ 10:56 AM

Argie

Ben,

You're comparing smoking crack to killing someone?

If a person calls another person a 'fag", that's makes them homophobic? I'm sure everyone here has used that word at least few times in their life. Secondly, is being "homophobic" (whatever that means) a crime? No it isn't.

Secondly, how is "immigrant" racist? I'm an immigrant and I'm not offended. If he said specifically black or brown immigrant, you could say he used a racist term.

You whiny liberal really have to work on your definitions of attack phrases.

@ Argie: No it's your justification that it's ok he smoked crack once, and if he's sorry then no big deal. He breaks the law and thats ok as long as he apologizes.

I never said being homophobic is a crime, just shows what a small ignorant person he is. Racist yes, that's fine if you aren't offended, but I know a number of people who are.

You right wing tea baggers need to stop re-drawing the line in the sand where things are ok and aren't when it suits your interest.

May 21, 2013 @ 11:16 AM

The biggest example of Ford's failure as a mayor is the fact that council is not allowing him to make any, none, zero, decisions without their say.

Look at the decision by council to vote on the transit funding report and the casino report. Even though council is agreeing with his "opinion", they still want their say.

The sad part is that with all of this negative publicity, he still has a shot at getting re-elected with the sympathy vote.

@Argie, I respect your opinion, but even you must be tired of the driving while reading, giving the finger to the TTC driver, the whole coaching football when he should be working, the gay pride parade controversy, etc. All of the cost cutting progress we've seen in this city has been made in spite of him, not because of.

May 21, 2013 @ 11:16 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

It's worth noting that with regards to the casino in downtown Toronto, Council was opposed no matter the hosting fee. In other words, it was going to die, whether Ford wanted it or not.

I just heard Ford speak and he seems to be blaming this on the Liberal govt. That's typical Ford blaming the wrong people. If Wynne had promised Ford his $100 million it would have still died in Council.

May 21, 2013 @ 11:20 AM

Argie

Ben,

I agree it speaks to his character but you have that choice to not vote for him.

Has Ford instituted any type of law where people of colour, sexual orientation or gender are disadvantaged? No.

Oh and "teabagger" is a homophobic term as you're implying right wing men like to engage in this homosexual act with another man. Therefore, you're a homophobe. You terrible person, you!

I hope you all enjoyed my day yesterday. :)

All this Ford talk is getting pretty boring, guys. This one's black and white. I don't see a single shade of grey, and I'm not color blind.

Ford's a deadbeat mayor but he was elected fair and square so we're stuck with him. :(

Now let's talk about something interesting. Does anyone have any exciting summer vacations planned?

May 21, 2013 @ 11:40 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Ben - I think you meant Tea Party...

The Tea Party are a group of ultra right wing Americans who want to revert our whole continent back to the 1850's (they are also a pretty kick ass alt-rock Canadian group from the Mid- 90's)

Tea Bagging is placing your testicles on some part (usually the forehead) of the 1st guy that passes out at a college party...

Argie certainly fits the description of a Tea Party member...ultra right wing views, barely hidden homophobia and bigotry, blind support of their chosen political champion, nomatter what stupid/immoral/illegal things they do, and if they get caught, well the left must have made it all up to get the right...

May 21, 2013 @ 11:46 AM

Corey

I think the crack charge alone is enough to draw conclusions about Ford's state to govern. Not sure we need to start throwing in the "homophobe" and "racist" labels again. Doesn't make sense to hold the mutterings of a stoned guy against him, especially since the video viewers themselves said you can't hear exactly what was said. What if he was saying, "I'm so proud of the the way those football players have come together from a bunch of minorities to work together as a team."? I won't even bother with the "fag" comment. People say all kinds of nonsense when their inebriated. Given that none of us have heard the audio ourselves, the fact that Ford partakes on inhaling a dangerous and addictive drug is what we should be passing judgement on.

May 21, 2013 @ 11:52 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Corey - you are absolutely right.

While I'm sure (okay hoping) that no one here has a crack problem, I'm sure we've all said things while drunk or such that we wish we could take back.

My issue was with Argie saying he's fine with the Mayor of one of the biggest cities in the world saying things like that.

May 21, 2013 @ 11:57 AM

Dave Williams

These are still allegations from a gossip site and paper with questionable ethics. When the "video" deal falls threw, the Star and Gawker will use the excuse that they were dealing with drug dealers and they could not ensure the delivery.
At this point Rob Ford is innocent. Why can't we give him that benefit until actual evidence is presented?

May 21, 2013 @ 12:11 PM

Speysidephil

@Dave

I am a huge Ford supporter, but he needs to address this issue up front.
Not walk away from the cameras blaming it on the Star.
If he's innocent just come out and say it,. This is too big to ignore.

May 21, 2013 @ 12:25 PM

Argie

I agree he has to address this allegation. But of course at this point its strictly an allegation.

I also believe Justin has to address the media as to whether he's gay or not. Perhaps his obvious lisp and fashion sense have nothing to do with his orientation.

May 21, 2013 @ 12:39 PM

Dave Williams

@Speyside, I agree he should address the concern, but it should be on his schedule. He has had the left media attack him so constantly that if he reacted immediatley on all of the fabricated crap, he would be giving into their mandate. Until any real evidence is given, I would not jump to conclusions.

May 21, 2013 @ 12:40 PM

Dave Williams

Maybe Argie has a point, should Justin address his status? Although, it is hearsay, as a polititian according to others here he should. His silence maybe speaking for him.

Two quick hits...

1. The homophobia stops now. Seriously. I'm looking right at Argie and Dave Williams. It might not be illegal to be homophobic and bigoted, but this is my blog and I'm tired of hating the small minded ignorance I read on my own site. Take that tea party shit somewhere else.

2. Three reporters described what they saw on video. If that's not enough for you to want answers from the mayor of Canada's largest city, maybe another item on this lengthy list has you wanting better for Toronto: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhpNgYjOr8FzdGhZNVFocUhERUxzRGJBMFBtVDZHaUE#gid=0

And as I've said countless times, if you remove the circus and distraction that is Rob Ford, he's the worst possible mayors.... a leader that refuses to lead.

That's another thing we're not going to debate here: whether someone is born gay or not.

Have a heart to heart with a gay man one day about when he decided to be gay. You'll know right away they had absolutely no say in the matter.

It would be like asking you when you decided to be straight. You were just born that way.

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie - better than what you've been adding....

May 21, 2013 @ 1:21 PM

@ Phil aqnd Arige: There is a difference between the verb to tea bag, which involves testicles. Teabaggers is a term used to refer to people considered part of the Tea Party.

@ Dave & Argie: If there was no merit to what has been said in the past or what is being said now, why isn't he suing everyone and their brother? Look what Brian Burke was doing to Toronto Mike. If there was no merit and everything he's been accused of was false Ford would be a millionaire off libel alone.

There are also all the stories from people who know people in the Ford Family, grew up near them, do business with them. It isn't just Rob Ford, the entire family is just a complete and absolute circus.

Your point on Trudeau having a lisp carries no merit and in Dave's case makes him look even more look worse than his usual comments do. Dave while you are getting coffee for your bosses, I'll have a double espresso.

May 21, 2013 @ 2:40 PM

@Mike, just keeping an open and clean debate. Maybe, the Star did not want to purchase the video as the A-list of Toronto's who's who maybe exposed as crack smokers as well? It seems that the Gawker "report" should have threatened several Torontonians. I do not see any proactive damage control by any high profile person possibly because there is no validity to the story.
Here is the Gawker reference for those who may have "overlooked" it.
" Rob Ford purchases his crack cocaine from a crew of Toronto drug dealers that service a veritable who's who of A-list...Torontonians? Torontites? Anyway, a lot of prominent people in Toronto purchase and enjoy crack and powder cocaine, and they all buy it from the same folks. The same folks Ford buys it from. Ford's longtime friend, people on his staff, his brother, a prominent hockey analyst, and more."

May 21, 2013 @ 2:40 PM

Dave Williams

Ben, you are so creative.

May 21, 2013 @ 2:41 PM

James

We're not going to see this crack video. Even if we did, unless they were going to get him on some kind of a conspiracy charge, the chances of actually convicting Ford on video evidence obtained from a couple as yet unnamed drug dealers is slim to none. And since pretty much the only way to force a Toronto politician to resign is by way of criminal conviction (you folks don't exactly have recall legislation), video or not, authentic or not, guilty or not, you guys get Ford until 2014.

And yes, unfortunately unless the Star decides to put up some of its own money for this video, the odds are very likely it'll stay being a what-iff--it's just under $91000 with a week left. So really, it's Rob Ford versus Gawker and the Toronto Star, and that's exactly how it'll stay. If you follow the Toronto Star or Gawker, odds are you already have a dislike of Rob Ford for any number of other reasons and so will be more likely to take the Star's reporting at face value. If you're not a fan of the Star for whatever reason and are even slightly pro-Ford, you'll probably read the reports, but be more than a little suspicious. Because 3 good reporters who saw the video couldn't be entirely sure 1: it really was Ford and 2: the video wasn't modified. And really, folks tend to take gawker with a grain of salt on basic principle anyway.

Like I've said before. Even if Rob Ford comes out and says the thing's a fake, or that he didn't go near crack, or anything along that sort, even if he goes and gets himself tested and comes back clean, the folks that take these reports at face value wouldn't buy it anyway. Because there's a video, and 3 people have seen it. And that's all the hardline "get Ford out of office right now" camp is concerned with. I swear it's become almost like a religion at this point--if you believe it, then you don't need to see proof. If you don't, then proof doesn't matter.

One weak non-denial on Friday is all we've had since the story was broke by Gawker on Thursday.

I want our Mayor to answer the Star's editor's questions:

1. Do you understand why this damning videotape requires a proper and thoughtful explanation?

2. Have you ever smoked crack cocaine?

3. How well do you know the men in the photograph that appeared on Friday’s front page? Did you know the man who was subsequently shot dead?

4. Did you refer to Justin Trudeau by a homosexual slur?

I often wonder what they think in the Oakville office about the negative spin the term Ford now has in Toronto. I'll bet they hate it.

I'll actually address the Dave Williams banning in a stand-alone entry tomorrow.

It wasn't a rash decision... it's been under consideration for months.

Right now, Dave Williams is the only commenter banned from this site.
In 11 years of blogging I almost never do this...

Hey, finally a welcome distraction! Pop-entertainment. I'm one of the few that detests what JJ Abrams has done to Star Trek. I saw the first one in the theatre, and thought it was pretty good. Then I watched it again. Then I watched it a third. After each successive viewing it got worse and worse for me, to the point where I literally felt insulted. Honestly, if you spend 5 minutes thinking about it, that movie makes absolutely no freaking sense. And I'm not being an uptight nitpicker here. As goofy as Star Trek could be, there was always, at it's heart, a message to impart. Abrams turned it into just another explosion laden, non-sensical popcorn flick. The entire reboot is based on a cheap, lazy way to retread stories we've already seen, but with a younger cast and glitzier effects. I won't be seeing his second attempt - based on what I've read, he's tarnished it even more.

This is turning into a $H!t fight with many comments.

There is more in life than degrading people which many do here.

My wife early this morning had major surgery for her Chrones disease removing part of her small intestine. All went well, but recovery is 4-6 weeks & in hospital 4-5 days.

Thoughts & prayers to those in Oklahoma also who lost loved ones & nobody commenting on that.

BTW - It's our anniversary today (23rd)& she's in the hospital - Love you Dear.

Regarding Star Trek. I am a big Star Trek fan and thought I would throw my opinion on what JJ Abrams has done to the franchise.

I saw a comment from someone that describes pretty much how I feel. Decent action movies using Star Trek props. I think JJ doesn't get what Star Trek was really about and throwing out a few references to the past doesn't cut it for me. I think JJ is vastly over-rated. Very shallow movies without depth is how I see it.

I will probably go see the new movie, but I really hope someone else takes over the helm of the next movie.

When you watch TNG, it makes the new Star Trek movies look juvenile.

I really don't get what the big deal with Dave Williams was. How many years did Irvine get to troll here (and yes, he essentially admitted that's what he did) with his unbearable ego and condescending attitude? Yeah, he annoyed me, but I'd never want him banned. Phil is frankly a bit of a suck, and he was the one that always screamed the loudest about Dave. If you don't like his comments, don't read 'em, and don't engage him. There's plenty of comments that I gloss right over whenever I see them username. Not that hard.

@sidephil "I trust Hudak over the rest of them" - Of course you are entitled to the opinion, but a rcent poll on provincial leaders "Positive light" Wynne had 34%, Horwath 33%, and Hudak 22%. Now with Hudak connection with the Fords, and even the Duffy thing, I can see Wynne getting a majority if an election does happen.

I know the moment the Duffy goose is cooked was when he tried to sneak out the kitchen when the story broke, it just looked horrible. Today when the elevators door open and you saw him standing in the corner with head down and back to the door and then sneaking out the back.

Casino rolled snake eyes in downtown & woodbine. Look I think Casino are bad ideas especially for TheEx, Woodbine can be acceptable if they really want it. If Ford had an inch of political instict he would focus on WB instead of trying to push a TheEX casino that was never going to get a price tag he wanted. But again EtobiCOKE acts like "the victim" when it was their leaders (ford) inability to get the job done.

On the positive side, at the Harbourfront had a free circus event during the weekend. On the negative side, when Doug Ford said you can't hear the planes at the harbourfront, that's a total lie. I could hear the planes down there.

I'm cheering for them because my Habs are out and the Bruins beat the Leafs. Anyway, they're going to win again tonight. The Bruins are going to win the cup this year. Yes, they will beat the Rangers, then beat Pittsburgh, and then beat Chicago. All going seven games. The Bruins are winning the cup, no doubt about it. Next year my habs are going to win it though. The Leafs won't win it any time soon. I'll miss hockey after it finishes. Why can't we have hockey all year round.

Can someone explain what difference it will actually make if the video is released? He's not going to get charged, because you can't prove he was smoking crack. He's not going to quit, because he's a power-crazed lunatic. So really, all the video will do is perhaps make it harder for him to get re-elected, which - by the sounds of it - is the situation he's in already due to the numerous idiotic decisions he's made as mayor.

Whether or not the video gets released, it's business as usual at City Hall.

I just now saw a story on the evening news that has literally left me shaking with anger. A son who's 85-year old mother is a resident of St. Joseph's care facility in Peterborough noticed scratches and bruises on his mother. He placed a hidden camera in her room and captured video of the following:
two staff members making out in his mother's room
another blowing his nose on her sheets,
one resident wandering into her room and going through her belongings.

Worst of all, it also captured an employee manhandling her, and rubbing her own feces in her face. They showed this graphic video on the news.

My own Mother is 82 now, and is still thankfully able to live on her own still. The thought of having to entrust her care to a facility like this and finding out they had treated her like this would be shattering. The thought is terrifying.

I want these people fired, I want them charged and jailed, and I want their names published so they can be publicly shamed. Disgusting.

@Mike - Yeah, sneaking out by the kitchen was Duffy lame escape a few months back, today elevator and backdoor was Fords. What is really interesting is seeing Fords cheerleading teams either staying loyal or jumping ship. The Sun is staying on his side, the Globe & Post are jumping ship. Most talk radio is staying on his side, but Tory is starting to push against him.

Blatchford, is very pro-Ford. But today on Tory show she pretty much said the way he acted since the story came out, she is now so sure he was in the video, that if he starts talking tough tomorrow it would mean he bought the video, that his credibility gone. This is Blatchford who had Ford's back throughout, is finally seeing her own reputation is now taking a hit.

I feel bad for Gawker John Cook, who is doing the talk radio rounds, it's embarassing he has to talk to these psycho Ford cult radio hosts, but he holds up very well. On Oakley(and others) hosts keep trying to push the question of drug dealers credibilty, Cook response "When your Mayor smokes crack, in a crack house, with crack dealers, the local priest will not be a witness". Ha classic!

As for Hudak/Ford, Coren (who is a RW I actually like listening to, don't agree often but has substance sometimes) He said on Tory show today that many RW wanted Hudak to call an election so he can lose and they can kick him out. Does that not have Fords written all over it. Push Hudak to lose, just to stab him in the back, so that Dougie can take over the leadership role.

WOW!!! I'm shocked someone was banned for having a debatable opinion. I personally find everyones thoughts on here interesting and that included Dave Williams. I found him to be someone who stood his ground on what he believed, with a very dry and refreshing sense of humor. People don't always like what other people think or believe but isn't that what keeps us all interesting at times. A difference of opinion or belief. It seems like CFRB is turning on Ford more than AM640. Holy crap huge Ford fan Ryan Doyle just said he will not vote for Ford again because of how Ford reacted to this! Now come on Jim Richards (who was a favorite of mine) grow a spine and speak out!

You know in this day both the PM and Ford showed how cowardly they are. PM is wagging his finger about being upset, even though he brought these guys in and Ford avoiding reporters. Seriously Wynne has more sack than either of these guys, she at least has press conference and take some tough questions, and I think people respect her for it.

Something I just thought of, remember when former Blue Jays player Escabar wrote some homophobic slurs under his eyes with black stickers. There was a detailed press conference in NYC the next day or so. But the freakin Mayor is allowed to hide.

Back to the topic at hand, it was definitely fireworks followed by Thunder. Here in Ottawa though there was a pleasant quiet before the Fireworks. That was the last sounds of the 300,000 tulips being enjoyed for one last time.

In other news, it was pretty quiet as well most of the weekend as the mayor was gardening. Yes, Mayor Jim Watson admitted on twitter he was gardening. Hence probably why he was not talking to the press. No word though if he drives a Ford.

In terms of crack here in the capital, the only crack heard or seen was the crack of thunder sound as the resurrected Concord supersonic plane got Mike Duffy out of town PDQ.

How bad of a reputation is our city getting from Ford? I remember when Marion Barry fiasco I thought the people of DC has a ghetto population. Are people getting the same perception of our city.

The late night shows like Fallon, Kimmel, and Leno doing jokes on the city and every major publication, from NYtimes, NyMag, USAtoday, BBC, etc are focusing on the city with the horrible mayor during the weekend.

Ford and his supporters have put him in front of the city good. But that is no surprise when they rather call themselves "Ford Nation" than the actual name of the city that I will always put first.

What I still find so interesting by today Casino vote is how little Ford pushed for Woodbine, it's his own ward but did almost nothing for it even though his ward said to want it. So is Ford incompetent or did he want EtobiCOKE to lose so to continue his "we are victms" portrayal. It's becomes obvious whats keeping them down is not some downtown boggeyman, but the people they elect.

The Globe nails it:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/commentary/editorials/the-rob-ford-spectacle-is-incredible-and-outrageous-and-his-friends-need-to-demand-that-he-do-the-right-thing/article12044933/

Mr. Ford’s near-total silence has been devastating to his own cause. His brief, perfunctory denial – “ridiculous” – did not dispel the cloud over his head, and over the city he leads. He had only to stand before the public and say that it was a lie, that any videotape that exists is a fake, that he does not smoke crack, that he does not consort with drug dealers. By not doing so, he invited the inference that it was true.

Public office-holders do not need to respond to every rumour or allegation. But these allegations cross a line. There is no room for debate; Mr. Ford’s alleged appearance on the videotape is a legitimate public concern. Crack and those who deal it bring addiction and murder to city life, especially its young people. The mayor himself has said that some of the players on the high-school football team he coaches would be dead if they weren’t playing football. The drug trade would kill them – it’s too obvious to need saying. Indeed, one of the young men he was allegedly seen with on the videotape has since been murdered.

The spectacle Mr. Ford is making of himself and of his city is both incredible and outrageous. Incredible because a chief magistrate who expects serious drug-related allegations simply to fade from view seems absurd. Outrageous because Canadian democracy relies on its elected officials to do the right thing if they violate a public trust, or as in this case if the trust is called into question.

What kind of animal would treat a senior - or anyone - like that? Too awful for words. I think of my dear, sweet Grandmother being cared for as she suffered, then died, of breast cancer. The end was quick, though, so she was never alone. I just couldn't bear the thought. Again, fucking animals.

@Corey You described Cheryl accurately. The frat boys I believe to be posting this circular shit could could also be banned - you know, as a kind of bonus for the rest of us. In regards to Star Trek (yeah, that was mentioned somewhere up there...), first let me establish my credentials. I grew up watching the original series in syndication on Saturdays. When the next gen hit while I was in high school I missed all of one episode on it's first airing over the seven year run. I watched the first few seasons each of DS9 and Voyager, but found my interest waning. Though I'm learning through reruns that I may have given up a little early. Movie-wise, I like most of I-IV. First Contact was a decent flick too, but most of the other next gen movies have been pretty forgettable.

So what about JJ 's new ones? In short, I love em. Yes, they have their gaps in logic, but even the most beloved Trek films and episodes do. Yes they have big action set pieces, but I think Bill Shatner would have jumped at the chance to do the same kind of things had he been as young and fit as Chris Pine. I'm enjoying the slightly different interpretation of Spock too; less robotic, more conflicted and still learning to navigate the social nuances of human nature. More important than staying true to the characters or universe,

Most importantly though, more so than staying true to the characters or universe, is that they are entertaining movies. They have scenes that will make you laugh, sit on the edge of your seat, and pull at your heartstrings. What more could one ask?

May 22, 2013 @ 12:06 AM

Corey

@Ajax Mike,

We have the same "Trek" credentials. I mentioned seeing the first Abrams Trek film in the theatre and enjoyed it at the time, so I can appreciate where you're coming from, but the story just doesn't hold up at all after a couple of repeat viewings. We're not just talking "gaps" in logic, we're talking "black holes" that suck all logic into them.
It seems to me like they just imagined cool scenes first and wrote the story around them. Why would Spock maroon Kirk on an inhospitable planet where he could have died, instead of just throwing him in the brig? Oh right - so we can have a scene of Kirk being chased by a giant CGI monster. Why does the Enterprise engine room suddenly resemble a 19th century steamship that is apparently water-cooled(!)? Why, so we can have a hilarious scene of Scotty being transported inside the water tubes. Speaking of that scene, as a Star Trek aficionado, doesn't it bug you that they can now transport someone from planet surface onto a starship travelling many times the speed of light? If they can do that now, then why do they need starships at all? I bet I could list 20 more examples of scenes that only exist because someone thought they would be cool, even before they knew what the plot of the film was going to be.

That feces thing sounds horrible. It really really does. It's gross.

Pittsburgh is not going to win the cup. Crosby is going to get injured again and then they will fall apart. The Bruins are going to beat them in the next round. How about those Bruins last night beating the Rangers. That was beautiful. They'll do it again tomorrow night and then play Pittsburgh in the next round and beat Pittsburgh, then beat Chicago and win the cup. The current series may not go seven ggames though. Rangers suck. Anyway, Bruins win the cup this year. I know they will.

I hate to rain on this huge lefty circle jerk (to steal a phrase from Mike), but there's little chance Ford will resign even if its him in the video. I'm sure another councillor might draw up some resolution that he's unfit to be mayor but in the end there's no legal precedent that would force Ford to quit.

So, we're all stuck with Ford until late 2014 - love him or hate him. I guess its back to the drawing board for the Star.

Oh, and Jon Stewart is a coward.

May 22, 2013 @ 8:32 AM

Corey

C'mon Argie. I'm the furthest person away from the left-wing circle jerk, but if this video is released, it ceases to be about a Toronto Star vendetta. It becomes about the Mayor of one of North Americas largest cities fraternizing with drug dealers, smoking an illegal substance, and lying about it. Precedent or not, in that case Ford should resign.

@ Argie: Thank you for the last line. Is this say the reverse of what is true Wednesday morning. OK OK . My turn. Bill O'Reilly is a hero and fox news is a trustworthy news station.

The Ford disaster train continues. My uncle from England called my mother yesterday to ask what was going on with our mayor.... Sad yes.

@ Corey: I think you need to get over the star trek re-brand. It's an origins series. Yes there are holes in any movie. I can tell you that outside of first contact the Star trek next gen movies were terrible. I think it's like comparing the original two batman movies to the latest reincarnations under Christopher Nolan. Super fans of Batman were unimpressed by a number of what they considered plot loop holes. Even taking that out of the mix, I would say you wouldn't even be able to compare the two movie sets. How about comparing the latest Batman to the original series? I think most of it was done to appeal to a larger scale audience, how much justice does that do to Gene Roddenberry's dream if a whole new generation of kids/families go back and watch TNG or the original series or DS9? Star Trek was losing it's pizzazz especially after the last series aired. I think Abrams did what he needed to do to give a jolt to the series.

In other news Canada dropped out of top 20 in global science ranking. That is definitely something people should care about, especially when compared to a crack smoking mayor.

Interesting take by Jonathan Kay

http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2013/05/21/jonathan-kay-a-crackhead-if-thats-what-he-is-cannot-be-allowed-to-lead-toronto/

Of course, this is not the first time that Mr. Ford has been made to look the fool during the last 15 years. He has insulted AIDS victims, appeared in public drunk, chased a reporter through City Hall, been arrested for drunk driving, and emitted so many ignorant and vulgar opinions about so many diverse topics that it is difficult to catalogue them. Even before last week’s bombshell, I’d argue that Ford already was unfit for the mayor’s job. But if the allegations that he’s a crack-smoker are true, this scandal would be the worst of the lot.

May 22, 2013 @ 9:24 AM

Corey

@ Ben - I think you unintentionally reinforced my point. Gene Rodenberry's vision is nowhere to be found in Abrams re imagining. I'll admit, Star Trek movies, for the most part weren't very good, but the various television series were actually inspirational for generations of people who went into scientific fields as a result of watching them. The series at least attempted to be grounded in science. Abrams has turned them from science-fiction to science-fantasy like Star Wars, inspiring no on to think about anything except occasionally licking the popcorn butter off of their fingers. If giving the series a jolt means turning them into just another forgettable, dumb action movie, I think it's sad.

But Christie Blatchford's might be most damning because she actually voted for Rob Ford.

http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2013/05/21/christie-blatchford-if-the-rob-ford-video-is-a-fake-why-hasnt-he-said-so/

The mayor’s supporters appear to accept the notion that somehow, the Star either would be involved in such a smear as a faked video or at least a willing dupe in seeing that said smear was spread wide and far.

I can absolutely assure them that this is not what’s happened here. No newspaper on Earth is sufficiently organized to pull off such a scam. Newspapermen like to uncover conspiracies and write righteously about them; we are far too inept to carry one off.

Secondly, though editorially the Star may not be everyone’s cup of tea, and though collectively its coverage of the mayor has been obsessive and occasionally puerile, it has mostly been, well, good.

Donovan and Doolittle are serious, proper journalists. The paper is a serious, proper paper. It has serious, proper editors. The very idea that at the Star, all these good people would be so blinded by their zeal to get Mr. Ford that they would invent or knowingly perpetrate a fraud is frankly not on the table.

I agree with you on the new Star Trek. I wrote about it yesterday. I was never a fan of Abrams and I think he is just using Star Trek props to film action movies with annoying lens flares. He seems to like people jumping off cliffs.

For some reason the genius of The Next Generation never seemed to translate to the big screen except for First Contact. I felt sort of empty watching the re-boots and my excitement about the franchise is waning.

@ Corey - yes the JJ movies do lean away from roddenberry's vision of exploration and such, JJ's are strictly action movies with good character development...in space.

However, I am a huge fan of the TV shows (voyager was kinda weak, but I digress). but even the shows had plot holes you could drive a Mack truck through. My favorite example is the TNG episode with Scotty; Riker identifies himself as being from the Enterprise and Scotty says "I knew Jim Kirk would drag her out of dry dock to find me"

but Scotty was on the Bridge of the Enterprise B when Kirk "dies" at the beginning of Generations......

That is one of hundreds...Sometimes you just have to take it for what it is and enjoy it or don't.

(did I just make myself look like the biggest trekkie ever?? Perhaps...)

@ Mike: This is a question I've been meaning to ask for awhile. I know you admit to not listening to much of H&F podcast, but why the hate for Dean Blundell show. I've listened to both over the last 6 months. Outside of the age of the hosts on both shows, there really isn't any discernible difference in quality, discussion or general fart jokes. I would even go so far as to say that H&F with the ability to swear now, what they talk about and how they react seems very forced. I would also argue that when Dean starts talking about political subjects, or anything that requires a serious tone, that he is better spoken than either of the people who held that position before him. Please remember I listened to Humble and Fred right up until they left the Edge and listened to Dean Blundell after that.

Two things....

1. I listened to the Humble and Fred morning show throughout the 90s.... through high school and university. Was always a fan of them and the music played during their show.

When Dean took over, I missed H+F. Dean seemed to lack H+F's charm.

2. In this new incarnation of the Humble and Fred show, I helped them give birth to it... I did the back-end work on the podcasts we did at Dan Duran's house and Proud FM and helped set them up to start these daily podcasts. I still help out with the xml or whatever. So I'm no longer just a fan, I'm a friend.

Both Humble and Fred will be at my wedding. So I'm super biased here.

@ Speysidephil - I for one will admit that Id've been all over Dave if he made a comment like that. I have just 2 points I want to make:

1) I'm pretty sure what Liz said, she said in jest. Dave would say insulting and degrading things with no hint of irony or humor.

2) This was an isolated comment. Dave was rude, degrading and intolerant on an almost hourly basis.

I've been the topic of many posts regarding this situation since Mike decided to ban Dave. I had no say in the decision, never asked for it to be done, and I wouldn't know Mike if I walked past him on the street. I can be a blow hard too, I know it, but I have never gone out of my way to attack anyone (other than Dave, and only when provoked), nor do I degrade or make personal attacks on someone I don't agree with (again other than Dave once provoked). I do believe I called Argie racist once, Argie took offense and explained that he can't be racist against a religion. I immediately apologized for my choice of words and Argie and I agreed to disagree.

Can anyone of the people giving Mike flack for banning Dave recall 1 time, just 1, that Dave admitted he crossed a line, or heaven forbid, apologize for the inflammatory things he said.

Dave was the textbook definition of a troll.

He says he believes his brother and claims this is the Star out to get him.

That Star angle is really frustrating.

a) Gawker broke the story and has nothing to do with the Star
b) Robyn Doolittle and Kevin Donovan are not liars and are not lying - they are solid reporters

So if Doug's not going to say anything new and Rob's not going to say anything at all, this speech was a big fat waste of time.

I started the "Toronto Mike Diet" in mid-February, after my doc told me I was 198 lbs and out of shape. I should be in the 165-175 area.

I walk 30 mins in the evening with my wife, to/from work is another 30 mins total, and 3-4 times per week I try to get out at lunch and do a walk/run combination that @Markosaar kindly pointed me to.

I've cut back on my food portions, but I DO NOT deny myself anything. The stomach adjusts after a week or so. My wife and I still have our "cheat night" on Saturday, but we don't overdue it.

Just got back from MS MR, a band that first came to my attention from Alan Cross's site.

Freaking amazing show. Considering they only have one album of material, it was spectacular. The singer was so adorable and engaging. Lots of stage presence, and though their music is mostly electronic, they had live drums and accompaniment.

Somewhat annoyingly however, they seem to be advertised everywhere I look online. Especially in front of YouTube videos. After their first single, Hurricane, got big, they were immediately signed to Sony who I guess are putting a hell of a lot of money behind them.

See/listen to Hurricane here

Fortunately/unfortunately, I feel like I happened to get in before they blow up too big. Tickets were $15, nice small venue at WRONGBAR, and we got seats off the the side immediately in the front row.

I saw The National early on in their career and unfortunately don't think I'd go anywhere near one of their modern concerts.

Can we all be thankful that this bill never came to pass. It's scary the amount of power that would have been granted to police and by ozmosis the government to look into each and everyone of us. I think the most important line
"The online surveillance bill was effectively a digital key to determining someone's leanings, the people they know and where they travel, says the office of Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart"

Absolutely scary and an almost very dark day in Canadian history averted.

Ford isn't going anywhere. Yes I know if he smoked crack, he should resign but he won't and no one can force him too.

Believe me, Ford is no saint and far from perfect but I love how he bugs the hell out of Toronto's lefty wannabe elitists (i.e. the south of Bloor crowd).

Oh I know.

Ask any Ford supporter after a couple of drinks why he/she likes him so much and they'll tell you it's because he irks the open-minded liberal minded people in this city.

Ha! I find said "open minded" people are only open minded if my opinion agrees with theirs.

Give me an example of one thing I disagree with you on that you believe an open minded person should agree with?

@ Argie: I would counter with another Ha. The same could be said about you. I would say that most people on the right are the same way. Problem is you consider anyone slightly left of centre to be lumped into any group on the very far left.

As for elitist I don't think there is anyone more elitist than your friend Ford. Talk about life with a silver spoon. You can also put Doug in that same category.

Ben,

I agree, we right wingers can be closed minded too. I'm only saying liberals are no better nor more open minded than conservatives.

My open mind tells me we shouldn't deprive homosexuals of their right to get married and adopt children - I believe you're born gay and to prevent a gay couple from a getting married in a civil ceremony or adopting a child is akin to preventing someone from doing the same because of the colour of his or her skin.

As for abortion, I believe that difficult decision is a woman's choice and I will not judge.

As for religion, I'm not suggesting we outlaw it... I'm not trying to take away your right to practice Catholicism.... I'm choosing to live my life and raise my children without it. That's my right.

May 23, 2013 @ 11:48 AM

OK, maybe you are tolerant of religion but on the other issues you prove my point.

That's OK, just admit you're as close minded as I am.

I had an open mind, weighed all sides, and made a moral choice. Open minded doesn't mean not having beliefs, it just means considering alternative opinions.

May 23, 2013 @ 11:58 AM

Ben Vidal

@ Argie: Lets put it this way. if something you say I disagree with in the slightest 9 time out of 10 unless I don't have the time I will respond or try to counter. The rest of the time if I don't respond, I most likely agree with you(although I probably wouldn't state it the way you do), or as I stated I might not have the time to respond. i.e., your post earlier in this thread about the British soldier death in the UK the lack of response had nothing to do with a lack of time.

As for the three points Toronto Mike wrote above. I can tell you I agree with him whole heartedly on his stance about homosexuals. Especially because my brother is gay. I can tell you my parents knew it from about the time he was 2.

For religion I attended church for a number of years as a kid and basd on my experience I have found my life to be much more fufilling without it.

As for abortion I've never been in a situation where someone I know needed one. But like mike said it's their difficult decision to bare and I will not judge or think I have control over their body. If there truly is a god then he'll judge them at their end, it's not for you or I.

Here's my problem with right-wingers and homosexuality: it's the utter lack of empathy.

ALL OF A SUDDEN when a son comes out of the closet, THEN suddenly they reverse their stance on gay marriage/adoption etc.

i.e. the most recent prominent one was Rob Portman:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/15/rob-portman-gay-marriage_n_2881805.html

"It allowed me to think of this issue from a new perspective, and that's of a Dad who loves his son a lot and wants him to have the same opportunities that his brother and sister would have -- to have a relationship like Jane and I have had for over 26 years."

Oh NOW he has a new perspective. What was he thinking, or where was the empathy when, king right-winger, Dick Cheney's son came out and Cheney reversed his position?

Obviously the same goes for Cheney. This story has played out many times just in Republican circles.

May 23, 2013 @ 12:22 PM

Argie

Wow, I disappear for lunch and now so many questions.....

markossar: To answer your previous question, I don't think I chose to be straight. Perhaps I was born this way or maybe its nurtured by my up bringing. I'm sure it is possible we're all born a certain way but its one of those things no one knows for sure. There have been numerous studies that conclude both sides of the question. Either way, we are what we are - mind you some of us can change over the years.

I agree with your point on Portman. Why should a child's orientation change your way of how you view gay marriage? Didn't he find out his son way gay a few years before he publicly stated he had changed his opinion??? To me he just seems like a typical politician who's riding the current wave.

I wont get into the debate about gay marriage or abortion as mike doesn't like to go there - which is fine by me as it does seem like a waste of time debating here.

Getting back to my point about open mindedness, my point is simply we are all close minded on issues we firmly;y believe in. I consider myself open-minded on gun ownership rights - simply because I haven't made up my mind on it. I don't own a gun nor do I plan to own one in the future however, I don't think responsible owners should be punished for the sins of a few reckless fuck heads. on the other hand, there needs to be some type of registration process to ensure public safety. I'm sure we all have examples of issue where we're undecided, thus open minded.

I suspose we can't even agree on this.

I'd argue it's a waste of time arguing the legalization of abortion in this country. It sounds like you're living in the wrong country.

May 23, 2013 @ 1:00 PM

markosaar

Nothing you said sounded unreasonable. I may have misunderstood a statement you made earlier, I thought you had explicitly stated that sexual-orientation is a choice.

Using gay marriage as an example, not a debate, if someone could demonstrate to me that allowing gay marriage would cause the utter breakdown of society as we know it, I would reverse my position on it.

May 23, 2013 @ 1:05 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie - Your statement on gun ownership is probably the most fair and balanced thing I've ever heard you say. (read in this case i guess). I would agree that people have a right to own guns (nothing automatic or anything that looks like it came from Call of Duty) but there needs to be a registration..we make people register cars.

Why cant you transfer that to your opinions on homosexuality?? You aren't gay, you have no intention of ever being gay,but why should a group of innocent people have to pay for the opinions of a group of fuckheads who don't want to let them live their lives? (a group that is getting smaller by the day)

As far as abortion goes, I can't climb inside your head, maybe your thoughts on that come from a genuine feeling that abortion is wrong and there are always other options, or maybe it's just you riding the right wing line, I can't say. If it is the former, I agree with you but believe it is not for me to tell someone else what to do with their body, but I can respect your passion, if it is the latter, well...

May 23, 2013 @ 1:09 PM

Argie

Phil,

No one or certainly not me is saying homosexuals can't live their lives. The issue at hand is marriage. Marriage is a religious sacrament - end of story. I believe gays should be allowed to enter a civil union but unfortunately the many gays don't feel that's enough. I also believe gays should not be discriminated against when it comes to employment, housing and the rights we all enjoy.

On a side note what puzzles me is why do atheists want to even marry? What do they care if their union is sanctioned by God - they don't believe in God so why bother?

mark,

I don't believe our society will be ruined by gay marriage but many fear churches, and not just the one I attend will be forced to perform these ceremonies. Most churches and religions have many restrictions on who can marry and being of a different gender is just one of those. The institution of gay marriage has already open the door to polygamists. Who's to deny them the right to marry if we allow same sex couples to marry? Can sibling marriage be far away?

Even actor Jeremy Irons wondered the day might come where a father and son could marry - likely used as a way to dodge inheritance taxes. Since there is no way of reproduction, judges couldn't say there would be a risk to the health of their offspring, as would be the case with brother and sister.

My final point on these issue sis this: just because an issue doesn't efect me personally, doesn't mean I can't have a strong opinion on it. Meaning, if I believe personally that I couldn't abort an unborn child, neither should anyone else. (i.e. just as I don't steal, and I also believe others shouldn't steal).

May 23, 2013 @ 1:35 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie - If you're good with civil union then you're alright by me.

Just as I don't think any religion has the right to tell someone what to do, neither do people have the right to tell religions what to do. If the Catholic Church wants to refuse to marry 2 men, that is the Church's right, and the men in question should find someone else to perform the union. Calling it a marriage or a civil union is just semantics.

And of course you are allowed an opinion. I could never abort an unborn child either, all I'm saying is there should be some room for tolerance in your life on this issue. Say you had a 14 year old daughter and she was raped by some sicko. Said rape results in pregnancy, would you really want your child going through nine months of that monsters seed growing in her. (I understand the child is not to blame, but really...how traumatic would it be to relive the conception every time she had morning sickness or felt the baby move). Very few things in life are black and white.

May 23, 2013 @ 1:44 PM

markosaar

Argie, I was trying to stick to the point on open-mindedness, but since we're talking about gay marriage anyway...

I can also completely agree it's ridiculous to force churches to perform gay marriages. I would also have to wonder why a gay couple would want to be married in a religion that considers them an abomination.

How/where has gay marriage opened the door to polygamists? (But certain derivatives from Christianity and Islam actually have been used justify allow polygamy.)

I don't buy the slippery-slope argument, nor some actor's opinion. The law can be written with a hard line. No, it's not going to stop people from trying to get away with weird stuff, but that will keep happening whether or not gay marriage is allowed. The problem is that in most jurisdictions still, gay marriage is still the "weird stuff".

Unfortunately I think some of my points are being washed out by others' arguments. I don't care about people having strong opinions necessarily. It's that unfortunately a lot of people with strong opinions don't care to listen to anyone disagreeing with them, at all. I also generally avoid any kind of political discussions online or amongst peers and family because I feel it's futile. This one seems pretty civil however.

The internet at large is full of people shooting their mouths off with no accountability. At least on Toronto Mike's blog people typically defend their positions rather than leaving some horrible bigoted remark and then disappearing into the aether. The comment sections on all the major newspaper sites + YouTube, are some of the worst cesspools of the internet.

May 23, 2013 @ 1:52 PM

Argie

Phil,

The example you give is extremely rare - thank God. If the rape is reported quickly a morning after pill is administered which greatly reduces the chance of pregnancy. I don't have a problem with that.

A more common occurrence is when a parent decides to abort because the child is female. Are the pro-choicers ok with that reason for abortion as well?

I know. This is a big open Mike. Yes, Pittsburgh won last night. They can handily beat Ottawa, but the thing is that the Bruins are really going to win the cup. You'll see. They're going to win tonight and get some rest before the next round. Then beat Pittsburgh and then beat Chicago. The cup belongs to the Bruins this year. Just wait. Then after the cup it's going to just be boring baseball. It sucks. Anyway, I would love a baseball lockout again. I miss having those.

The problem I have with conservative is the hypocrisy. I can respect real libertarians but Conservatives is so wishy wash. They want government out of their business and lives but wants to tell women what she can and cannot do with their body. They are so paranoid about muslim law but than wants to write laws simply because their bible thinks being gay is wrong. Consistently red states get more federal tax money send back to them than blue states.

Recently right wingers are really angry because the IRS is focusing on Tea Party groups. So the IRS is profiling anti-tax groups. So wait. Now RWers are AGAINST profiling. The same group wanted to profile blacks, muslims and hispanics for decades just by how they look, but when it's done to them, THAT's outrageous!

Doug Ford for Mayor? So what do you think will happen to Rob? By the way Doug is somebody who looks like he would step over anybody for himself, even his own brother. That was the worst presser I have seen in a long time. It didn't add anything to the situation with Rob saying "I trust my brother". By the way there's a reason you can't use a family member as a reference in a resume, people think there's a bias. Nobody wanted to hear from his brother and made Rob look even more cowardly.

@Liz my favorite morning show is John Moore for newstalk and Brady for sports. Oakley was really good a decade or so back when he was in CFRB but since coming to 640 he's dumbed himself down so much and has become really generic style.
