Video of Rob Ford Smoking Crack Cocaine

Video of Rob Ford Smoking Crack Cocaine: GawkerThis entry will contain no editorializing. I'm merely going to report facts.

Gawker just wrote about a video of Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine. John Cook, the author, has seen the video, supposedly taken within the past six months.

Here is what the video shows: Rob Ford, the mayor of Toronto, is the only person visible in the frame. Prior to the trip, I spent a lot of time looking at photographs of Rob Ford. The man in the video is Rob Ford. It is well-lit, clear. Ford is seated, in a room in a house. In one hand is a a clear, glass pipe. The kind with a big globe and two glass cylinders sticking out of it. In the other hand is a lighter. A slurred voice off-camera is ranting about Canadian politics in what sounds like an attempt to goad Ford. "Pierre Trudeau was a faggot!" is the one phrase the lodges in my mind. Ford, pipe in one hand and lighter in the other, is laughing, and mildly protesting at the sacrilege. He seems to keep trying to light the pipe, but keeps stopping to laugh. He is red-faced and sweaty, heaving with each breath. Finally, he finds his moment and lights up. He inhales.

You may recall the recent controversy when Sarah Thompson described Rob Ford's behaviour as that of a man on cocaine and the even more recent allegations that Rob Ford has a substance abuse problem.

ford

The photo above from the Gawker story "shows Ford hanging out with a number of people. The gentleman standing to his right, flipping the camera the bird, is Anthony Smith. Smith, a 21-year-old college student, was killed two months ago outside a Toronto nightclub in a gangland-style shooting".

Update: The Toronto Star's Robyn Doolittle and Kevin Donovan have also seen the video and believe it to be Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. They have many more details here.

Holy shit, I forgot about that comment. And Corey, you're the one who suggested they record Rob Ford smoking the crack.

Here's the comment:

Here's the thing: Rob Ford DOES use crack cocaine. A friend of mine,
her mother is a serious drug addict. Rob Ford regularly goes over to
her house to smoke crack.

The problem is this: The daughter wants to expose Rob Ford's drug
abuse, but her oldschool Italian grandmother won't allow her to "bring
shame" upon the family, long story short. So basically the daughter has
become complicit with the entire thing instead of doing the right
thing. Shame on you Jasmin.

At least when Sarah Thompson was doing her thing, there was video almost evidence that she had absolutely no problem allowing it to go public. In fact, she aranged it specificly for that purpose. To my knowledge, she's not been disappeared for that--someone can feel free to correct me here. And yet this guy's supposedly holding out for escentially protection money, on account of Rob Ford could find out this guy's got that video and poof, no more nosey guy with camera? Also, I think this is my favourite.

• Rob Ford purchases his crack cocaine from a crew of Toronto drug dealers that service a veritable who's who of A-list...Torontonians? Torontites? Anyway, a lot of prominent people in Toronto purchase and enjoy crack and powder cocaine, and they all buy it from the same folks. The same folks Ford buys it from. Ford's longtime friend, people on his staff, his brother, a prominent hockey analyst, and more.

Now this can't be right. According to the anti-Ford camp he has no friends, long-time or otherwise. And I'd be pretty willing to bet the prominent hockey analyst he doesn't directly name--presumedly because he, too, probably has enough influence in the Toronto area to have a brother disappeared--is Don Cherry (If memory serves, he backed/backs Ford.). Because, you know, clean/sober folks just don't have views like his. I'm hardly a Rob Ford fan for a whole bunch of other reasons and I can't even vote against the guy, but come on. This is a bit much.

Gawker may not have the journalistic integrity of the New York Times, but I can't think of an instance where they lied.

The entire story here is that John Cook from Gawker saw a video in which Rob Ford smokes crack cocaine and John Cook believes it to be the genuine article.

We'll see what the Star says tomorrow... it's been widely known for a while that the Globe was sitting on a monster Rob Ford story. I think this is that story.

We'll see how it all unfolds. Never a dull moment with this mayor, that's for sure!

It's Real

The Star has confirmed the story, with many more details.

Holy shit folks, this is real.

A cellphone video that appears to show Mayor Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine is being shopped around Toronto by a group of Somali men involved in the drug trade.
Two Toronto Star reporters have viewed the video three times. It appears to show Ford in a room, sitting in a chair, wearing a white shirt, top buttons open, inhaling from what appears to be a glass crack pipe. Ford is incoherent, trading jibes with an off-camera speaker who goads the clearly impaired Mayor by raising topics including Liberal l-leader Justin Trudeau and the Don Bosco high school football team Ford coaches.
“I’m f-----g right wing,” Ford mutters at one point. “Everyone expects me to be right-wing, I’m…” and his voice trails off.
How can you indicate what the person is actually doing or smoking?
FORD'S LAWYER
At another point he is heard calling Trudeau a “fag.” Later in the 90 second video he is asked about the football team and he appears to say (though he is mumbling, “they are just f-----g minorities.”
The Star had no way to verify the video, which appears to clearly show Ford in a well lit room. What follows is an account based on what both reporters viewed on the video screen. Attempts to reach the Mayor, members of his staff to get comment on this story were unsuccessful.
A lawyer retained by Ford, Dennis Morris, said that Thursday’s publication by the Gawker website of some details related to the video was “false and defamatory.” Morris told the Star that by viewing a video it is impossible to tell what a person is doing. “How can you indicate what the person is actually doing or smoking,”Morris said.
Ford’s chief of staff, Mark Towhey, would not listen to questions by the Star on Thursday night and abruptly hung up when the Star called.
The video was taken on a smartphone by a person who said he has supplied crack cocaine to the Mayor.
Throughout the video Ford’s eyes are half closed. He lolls back in his chair, sometimes waving his arms around erratically. He raises a lighter in his hand at several points and moves it in a circle motion beneath the glass bowl of the pipe, then inhales deeply.
The Star reporters (Donovan and Doolittle) were shown the video on the evening of Friday May 3 in the back of a car parked in an apartment complex at Dixon Rd. near Kipling Avenue in the north end of Etobicoke. We were allowed to watch and listen to the video three times. After, both reporters separately made written notes of what they saw and heard. Both reporters, prior to watching the video, studied numerous City Hall related videos of Ford and to the best of the reporter’s abilities they separately concluded the man in the video was Mayor Ford.
In the video, what appears to be afternoon sunlight is streaming through partially closed window blinds, lighting Ford’s face. The video ends with the ringing of a cellphone (it is not clear if it is the cellphone that is being used to video the scene). The ring tone, which is a song, startles the Mayor, whose slitted eyes open a bit and he is heard to say “that phone better not be on.”
The two Star reporters were approached with an offer to purchase the video shortly after the Star’s story on Ford’s removal due to apparent intoxication of some sort from the Garrison Ball. The story, published March 26 of this year, described a concern by unnamed associates and staffers at City Hall that Ford had a substance abuse problem. Ford dismissed the Star story, called the Star “pathological liars” and invited the newspaper to sue him. Garrison Ball attendees interviewed by the Star did not say they smelled alcohol. One said, “he seemed either drunk, high or had a medical condition.”
After the story was published the Star was contacted by two separate people who purported to have information on Ford abusing crack cocaine.
One person, who described himself as a community organizer in the Somali community, told the Star he had copies of a video that, he said, showed Ford smoking crack. What followed was a protracted discussion between the man and Star reporters. The man said he represented two Somali men who had supplied crack cocaine to the Mayor on several occasions, all in the Dixon Rd. area. The Star was not able to verify those claims.
The Somali man who approached the Star said his two associates (one had been present when the video was made and had done the filming) wanted “six figures for the video.” At another point he said they had originally wanted $1 million, but he had convinced them to lower the price. Asked why they were selling the video, the Somali man said he wanted to make a change in his life and use the money to move out west to Calgary.
The Star did not pay money and did not obtain a copy of the video.
Initially, the Somali man who contacted the Star said he had information about “a Toronto politician.” When the Star met him the first time he showed a photo of Ford dressed in sweat pants, standing in the driveway of a brickhouse with three other men. The one on the left in the picture had apparently been killed over the weekend on King Street near the Loki Lounge. The man, with his strong forehead and distinctive jawline, looked like Anthony Smith, 21, who indeed had been killed recently.
Over the last month the Star has had several meetings with the Somali man, culminating with the May 3 meeting at the Dixon Rd. apartment complex.
The reporters had told the Somali man that they wanted to see the video. A meeting was arranged. First, the reporters were told to drive to the parking lot of an Etobicoke strip mall. They were told to leave their bags and cellphones in their own cars and get in his. The drive lasted less than 5 minutes. They pulled into the parking lot of the Dixon Rd. high rise complex.
The Somali man got out of his car and returned with his associate.
The associate, also Somali, was a man in his early to mid 20s. He looked nervous and was shaking slightly. He had thick scabs on his arm.
He pulled out an iPhone – he would not let the reporters hold it. At first he wouldn’t let the sound play, but then relented.
In a video clip less than two-minutes long, an incoherent and rambling Mayor Rob Ford can clearly be seen smoking what appears to be crack cocaine.
He is sitting on a chair holding a glass pipe with a blackened top and a lighter. Ford is the only person on the video, but there are at least two other people in the room – one, a man who said he is his dealer, secretly recording him, and another, an anonymous voice asking him questions.
The footage begins with the mayor mumbling. His eyes are half closed. He waves his arms around erratically. A man’s voice tells him he should be coaching football –because that’s what he’s good at.
Ford agrees and nods his head, bobbing on his chair.
He says something like “Yeah, I take these kids… minorities” but soon he rambles off again.
Ford says something like: “Everyone expects me to be right-wing, I’m” and again he trails off.
At one point he raises the lighter and moves it in a circle motion beneath it, inhaling deeply.
Next, the voice starts in on Liberal leader Justin Trudeau. The man says he can’t stand him and that he wants to shove his foot up the young leader’s “ass.”
Ford nods and bobs on his chair and says yes, “Justin Trudeau’s a fag.”
The man taping the mayor keeps the video trained on him. Then it rings. Ford looks at the camera and says something like “that better not be on.”
The phone shuts off.

It also confirms what we suspected for so very long about Rob Ford being homophobic. He called Justin Trudeau a "fag".

Am I the only one who worries that this might push our beloved mayor to pull a Budd Dywer? I sincerely hope not, but the guy hasn't always been the most stable and he doesn't seem the type to accept this kind of disgrace, well, gracefully.

If this story is true then I wish for nothing but for Mr. Ford to get the help he obviously needs, and for our city to finally have competent leadership.

@Ajax Mike - I could see that happening. Not as dramatic as Dwyer, but Ford does seem like a very depressed person in general. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they found him hanging in his basement.

But one thing i'll say, and this is directed to Mikes comment on May 17 at 00:28.

Just because he called Trudeau a 'fag' doesn't make him homophobic. I'm not saying it doesn't either. All I am suggesting is that I've said some pretty stupid things when I was young and drunk that I didn't truly mean.

It is odd that not once do the Ford haters ever defend the intrgrity of the process. The star reporters that have seen the video could not "verify the contents" as written by the star themselves. Must I remind everyone that Rob Ford's first action whenever something negative about him is pronounced is to outright deny, deny, deny. In most cases, that's meant lie, lie and lie again. He's done it over and over and over again. I'm sure he'll say the video is phony. I'm just as sure it's not.

When I defended the story about Rob Ford having a substance abuse problem, I leaned heavily on the credibility of Kevin Donovan. Knowing that both Donovan and Robyn Doolittle watched the video, took notes separately and co-wrote the Star piece on the Ford crack video leaves me very confident this is the real deal. And you know what's crazy? I'm not the least bit surprised!

I hope he resigns from office and gets help, for his family's sake and for his sake. This man has some serious problems and there's a place for him in this world, but it's not leading the city I live in and the city I love.

Outside of all these distractions he was a shitty mayor.

I've been a supporter of Rob Ford since day 1. In fact, he was my favourite councillor before he became mayor. Despite all his misgivings I believe his agenda for the city is excellent and solid.

However, if these allegations are true, and the proof overwhelmingly points in that direction, Ford should resign. This is making international news and he has embarrassed Toronto 1 too many times. Appoint deputy mayor Holyday as Ford's replacement - and he would be the best mayor this city has ever seen. Think Ford's agenda+, and unlike Ford he's a good speaker, well-respected, a savvy politician, and as the former mayor of Etobicoke has loads of experience. I support Ford and will continue to support him but this leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. Maybe it's time to move on.

@Mike, why should he give the Star any credence on this by responding to this story. If the Star's history of thowing accusations at the mayor had any previous validity, open minds may think that this story may have had some validity. The truth is that their own reporters viewed the video 3 times and they "could not verify the contents" , but they printed the story anyhow for the sensationalistic reaction that a certain percentage of the populous seems to eat right up.

Photoshop? Nah. You can't photoshop a video.

It is difficult to doctor a video. Yes, it can be done, but it requires a lot of expensive equipment/software. It's doubtful that crack dealers would know how to properly doctor a video.

The will be purchased, analyzed by experts and it will probably prove to be undoctored.

If Rob Ford is not an illicit drug user, all he has to do is take drug tests at a few facilities and have the results publicly released. Easy peasy.

If Rob Ford is a an illicit drug user, he needs to do the right thing and admit his illicit drug use and resign and go to rehab, if not for the City of Toronto, then for his family.

So come on Mayor Ford, take a drug test. Let us see the results. If you're clean, stay in office. If not, resign.

@TeeDot in TeeDot, and speaking as someone who has dabbled in digital video for 15 years...

First, the software for "doctoring" (editing) video isn't that expensive these days, and can generally be easily pirated regardless.

Hollywood has been fooling people through video/film trickery and special effects for 90+ years or so. Nowadays it's commonplace by hobbiests on YouTube.

But it doesn't even take bleeding-edge technology. It's not a huge leap to believe someone trying to extort six figures went through the effort of getting this done with the help of an actor and good make-up artist.

I'm more inclined to believe that it actually was Ford in the video, but I suspect we won't really know until it gets released.

I've been labelled as being a Ford supporter many times on this site. The truth is, the point of my comments were either in opposition to the Star's personal vendetta (which I still maintain to be very real), or opposition to others who seemed to abandon their normal liberal sensibilities by rushing to judgement and condemning Ford on the basis of completely unsubstantiated evidence. In other words, more often I was defending him on principal rather than because I was a member of "Ford nation".
I think there is something to this. This story was not broken by The Star. It was broken by Gawker, an American entertainment/gossip site that would have no interest in defaming Ford.
Someone mentioned Marion Berry earlier. Remember folks, he's served 4 terms as Mayor of DC, despite arrest, conviction and jail time for possession and smoking of crack, not to mention the numerous corruption scandals brought to light during his various tenures. He's not the only example by a long shot. As bizarre as it sounds, Ford could survive even this.

That's absolutely false. There's many documented instances of Rob Ford lying that have nothing to do with the Star.

1. He denied he was arrested in FLA for pot possession until the mug shot came out and he finally came clean.

August 2010: The Toronto Sun confronts Ford about an arrest in Florida in 1999 for marijuana possession. Ford adamantly denies the charge: “I’m dead serious. When I say no, I mean never. No question, Now I’m getting offended. No means no.” He later acknowledges that he had “one joint in my back pocket.” The next day, he says his memory had been fuzzy because he had been charged with “failing to give a breath sample” that same night. But even that is not true: he was actually charged with driving under the influence, to which he pleaded no contest.

2. He denied he was at the Leafs game when he was intoxicated and verbally harassing spectators. When enough people said they saw him there and it was definitely him, he finally came clean.

April 2006: Ford berates a couple at a Maple Leafs game with such comments as “Do you want your little wife to go over to Iran and get raped and shot?” When the couple complains, Ford denies even being at the game — though he had given them his business card. He eventually concedes and apologizes, saying he had been “pretty well acting like an idiot.”

Those are two biggies off the top of my head... I'm sure I'm missing some. And these are just the lies he came clean about, not the lies he's still sticking with.

@Mike, the drug charge was dropped, so in our law it is not considered a record of offence. As far as the game situation, the leftists keep failing to mention that the spectators initiated the ruckus and that Rob Ford stepped up and accepted responsibility as he was the public figure in the mist of the situation.
With that said, even with all of this fabricated leftist negativity, he still has been the most productive mayor in recent memory. Imagine how much more would be accomplished if the "minority" that keeps fabricating this crap actually tried to contribute to positive progress rather than resent it.

@ Dave: I think you're high, perhaps you are deflecting on to Phil because you don't know how to cope. That can be the only logical reason one can use as to why you are denying how the situation played out. Ford vehemently denied being at the hockey game. The people in question that he had an altercation with asked him to shut his fat mouth. Why? Because he was super drunk and being loud and obnoxious. He then said things to them that I don't think most civilized people would say. This has nothing to do with lefties vs. righties because at that point his notoriety was relegated to him being a loud mouthed councilor and most people didn't know or care who he was. Must be nice though to sit there and completely change around a story to suit yourself. Almost as bad as the red necks down south who believe Obama is Muslim and born in Kenya.

If it is Rob Ford in the video then he needs to admit to a problem and seek help immediately...it is so much more than right vs. Left...Star vs. Sun etc. We’re talking about his health/life and I think that’s more important than politics

If it’s not him in the video then he needs to “lawyer up” and start some suits going...because someone is doing some serious damage to his credibility and reputation. It does not matter how much good everyone thinks he’s doing for the city if at the end of the day he and the city become laughing stocks ...we don’t live in a vacuum

Former Drug Dealer

I'd like to pipe in to this debate specific to the comparison of weed and crack and the allegations.

Anyone who compares smoking weed to smoking crack is so seriously misinformed it's hard to swallow. It's akin to comparing a kid who stole a packet of gum to someone who runs a chop shop for German cars.

Crack is addictive, but addiction affects people in different ways. Some people become the classic crack addict; skinny, poor teeth, rotting away doing anything for a 20 stone. Others manage to function quite well in society with their crack habit. I've seen people managing a business with a $200 dollar a day crack habit. They didn't look anything like the classic poster crack addict. I believe it was the mayor of Detroit or DC who admitted to being a former functioning crack head.

Yet Mr Ford displays tendencies of people with drug addiction. He's repeatedly seen sweating heavily in photos with a flushed face. He appears to have erratic mood swings which are common to addicts. Of course this behaviour may well be sighs of serious high blood pressure & heart disease.

@Dave Williams. Just because charges were dropped does not indicate innocent. Robert Willie Pickton attempted to rape & murder a woman in 1997. He was charged & the charges were later dropped. We all know how that worked out, don't we. Was he innocent? We've all committed crimes and not been caught. Because there was no conviction does that make us innocent?

Finally, the claim this is a leftist Toronto Star thing is 100% bullshit. Gawker Media broke this story. Are you going to tell me a New York based internet publication is involved in Toronto politics?

May 17, 2013 @ 2:36 PM

@Phil, I have moved on about your drug usage, but since you asked I will respond. Rob Ford has only been accused of drug usage, you not only admit that you use, but you cannot wait to light one up with your kid.
@Mike, I may not always agree with all the anti posts, but it does definately shed another light on others opinions. So am I annoyed when I see blind critisism without due process? No, but it does disappoint me that the educated commenters here are quick to prosecute based on allegations only.

As usual Dave glosses over direct contradictions to his "facts". Ford ha a history of lies documented by all the newspapers.
But Dave won't acknowledge that.

As for this story, it has a lot of holes with people who have a lot to gain from it.

But the Gawker angle and the fact that CFRB was approached means the video exists. Whether or not it's phony is what none of us can comment on. We haven't seen it. Debating it's authenticity is pointless.

But there is a video.

@Dave

You're correct in saying we should wait to see the evidence before we destroy this man's reputation. While it doesn't look good for Ford too many questions remain to declare him guilty.

That being said, watching Mike display evidence of two scenarios where Ford clearly lied and seeing you ignore fact to keep your position afloat is sad.

One important thing I've learned in my life is to be humble. Admit when I am wrong and being open to others opinions. Too often on this forum I see evidence presented to you and you clearly ignore it.

No one knows everything, no one is right all the time and there is no shame saying I was wrong, Ford has lied on some occasions but that doesn't mean he is lying now.

Agreed. 100% there is such a video, as described by three journalists from two different publications. I have no doubts this video exists.... the two journos from the Star watched it three times each. And as I've said before, they do good work and have a great deal of integrity.

So the video exists. The only escape hatch Ford has is to claim it's fake. I'm sure his people are working on buying the video now in order to destroy it and keep this sliver of doubt alive.

I doubt it's fake, but I haven't seen the video nor am I an expert in such things.

It's cute that Ford calls it ridiculous and another shot by the Star when it broke on Gawker and his office has yet to issue a statement of denial.

But regardless of Ford's circus show that has the world laughing at us, he's a shitty mayor. Based on his performance as Mayor alone he doesn't deserve to be re-elected and is an embarrassment to every proud citizen of this great city.

C'mon Dave. Your defense of Ford goes waaaay beyond being annoyed about "blind critisism without due process".
Look at the hockey game incident as an example. First you claim there is no documented evidence of Ford lying. When that incident is brought up, you try and deflect it by saying "the spectators initiated the ruckus", and giving Ford kudos for accepting responsibility. Wait...what? What do either of those things have to do with the fact that Ford initially lied about even being there in the first place? I'd also love to know your source of information about the spectators starting it, since I have never read an account that supports that view.
Face it, you're not the least bit objective when it comes to Ford.

Rob, nobody has stated that the mayor is perfect. Most of us that look in the mirror realize they we are not either. The facts are that the Star has had a vendetta against the mayor long before he offered his services as mayor to the city. Infact, the majority of the electorate voted him in as mayor for the qualities that he brought to the table. I may add it was a historical landslide victory. The problem that minority leftists cannot find many flaws on how he is governing so they fabricate attacks on his personal life. They attacked him for eating at KFC while he was on a diet, imagine if people insulted people like Mike and Mcnulty for attempting to lose weight?
The Star has turned into a cheap tabloid that will do anything to get traffic on its site and to have people purchase its paper.
In all likelyhood the paper would be bankrupt if they did not have Ford in office to slander.

The thing about this case like so many others against Ford; there always seems to be a weird twist where we don't know for certain what happened. These weird circumstances lead to the kind of debate we have on this blog. There always seems to be some doubt about what really happened. So what happens next??? People decide to believe the version based on or supporting their own ideologies.

I don't know what to believe here but I will wait to reserve judgement based on facts. Just because one does not like Ford doesn't mean he is automatically guilty and just because one likes Ford doesn't mean this video is fake or doesn't exist.

I don't know what to believe anymore but I will say this, there is too much negativity thrust on our city. Mike, you do make one good point that I agree with...this is too much of a circus.

@Dave Williams - Ford created a media event out of trying to lose weight, it wasn't the other way around. He created the "Cut the Waist" challenge, complete with a website and invited the media to attend weekly weigh-ins. Then he proceeded to do nothing to actually lose the weight, and embarrassed himself at the weigh-ins, before finally just giving up altogether. The guy is a millionaire. He could have hired a personal nutritionist and a personal trainer and achieved success, but instead he needlessly set himself up to fail in front of the press.

Earlier today AJax and Corey is worried about what he could do to himself. I just don't see it, to do that to yourself you need have the commong human ability to have shame. I don't think he or his brother has any. I've NEVER seen anything like this, it's like they created this world that they are always the victim & the world out to get them and have fully blurred the lines of reality.

As troublesome as the Ford's are, their cult like supporter are even creepier. Listening to talk radio I heard everything from "Don't care if he does crack in his office" to strange conspiracy theories, to a guy on the Oakley show at 7:45am who said he "Doesn't care if he's an axe murderer, he would still vote for him". That's not normal reaction to a political leader, that's a reaction to a cult leader.

@Justin, as for Doug Holyday taking over, last year during the conflict of interest I would encourage that over another election or appointing somebody new, but he has stayed by his side way to much and started talking about how Ford could have been tricked in that position. The thing is the people around Ford is losing any credibility they might have had

Everyone should youtube Chris Rock's "Crack Mayor". He was talking about DC Mayor Marion Barry. The similarites to this situation it startling. From Barry claiming it was a "Set up" and the black community going along with it and making excuses. What does that sound like? But just replace black community with the white trash section of the city. Sorry if you are okay with your mayor being a crackhead, you are white trash

@Dave Williams - The Star didn't fabricate anything. First, the story originated with Gawker. Second, The Star is reporting on this video. The fact that this video exists does not seem to be a fabrication -- it's been confirmed by more than just the Star. As well, the Star reporters that viewed it are highly regarded journalists.

The question is whether the video itself is a fabrication.

@Cheryl - by all accounts, Smitherman comes with plenty of baggage too.

I would vote Tory for mayor.

May 17, 2013 @ 5:33 PM

The story was released by Gawker, but the Star was sitting on it for months. For legal reasons, they did not "scoop" the story as it would open them up to a libel suit. By "allowing" Gawker to release the story, it allowed the Star to jump all over it but source Gawker. It would not surprise me if the Star handfed Gawker as they were quick to react to the Gawker story.
Smithershit has a documented hard drug past that seems to be left out of most stories.
Tory would be a decent mayor as well, but Ford has done a great job in following up on what his promises were.

Pablo

@Dave So has Ford lied in office before or are you just obtuse?

May 17, 2013 @ 6:00 PM

A drug test would be do nothing. The only drug that remains for any length of time in a human is weed. This is the reason companies do random drug tests because crack and other chemicals only stay in the blood a few hours to a few days.

Dave Williams, you are wrong again. From the National Post

The reports, first published on U.S. website Gawker, say a video that appears to show Ford smoking crack cocaine is being shopped around by a group of men allegedly involved in the drug trade.

Your claim about The Star not publishing it because of fear of libel is nonsense. If Mr Ford was to take legal action against the newspaper, he would first have to prove he did not smoke crack. I'm surprised someone with such a diverse real estate portfolio has such a limited understanding of civil & tort law. If you want to place blame on people trying to smear Ford, point your fingers at the people who are selling the video. Media is just the messenger in case you forgot that.

Regardless, it's clear Mr Ford seems to lack the ability to understand how to not draw attention to himself. He seems to relish the drama and attention. Ask anyone who has been a convict or involved in illegal activities & they will all say the same thing. The first rule of success is to never draw attention to yourself.

You're simply too narrow minded and partisan to actually make an unbiased judgement. If Rob Ford raped a 10 year old you'd probably blame the 10 year old for showing to much skin.

And while I'm no fan of Smitherman, referring to him a Smithershit is hypercritical of you. Recently you said I was vulgar for calling you an asshole. Why is it okay for you?

And you say it is the Star's story. It isn't. Gawker was first. And now it turns out many media outlets were offered the same chance. The Star probably viewed it because they do want dirt on Ford and this was a a pretty big bone to go after.

But it still stands the video exists and three people say it's Ford.

Right now the Star isn't lying. It's not their video. Calling them out as liars about this is a lie in in itself.

@Former Drug Dealer; it appears you have sampled too much of your product previously. Gawker did break the story, as The Star likely fed it to them. Take a step outside of the box and try to think clearly. The Star has attempted to destroy this man for numerous years, they have had put together fluff pieces from poor sources several times. This time they could detroy his personal life if enough people by such drivel. By them "allowing" an internet tabloid to break the story, and them writing a crap story and attempting to use a internet tabloid as the "source", it takes liability away from them, it makes them appear to be innocent in its fabrication, yet it sells their newpapers as somehow they were the first Canadian publication to pick up this "must read" crap.

From: http://gawker.com/for-sale-a-video-of-toronto-mayor-rob-ford-smoking-cra-507736569

He inhales.

Update: The Toronto Star, whose reporters have also seen the video, say that it's Justin Trudeau—Pierre's son and the leader of the Liberal Party in Canada—and not Pierre getting called a "faggot." It's hard to keep all these Canadians apart. The Star also has Ford himself, and not the voice off-screen, making the "faggot" remark, though that's not how I remember it.

So, respected (debatable) reporters don't agree on a video they all saw. Big surprise there.

Since none of us have seen the video I find it amusing that the haters hate and the lovers love. I still think Toronto got the Mayor we deserve. Unless through some miracle John Tory runs for Mayor in the next election, I would be very disappointed in the left overs we will have to vote for.

Gawker is at about $50,000 as I write this. They need to hit $200,000 in 10 days. As Mike stated and I agree....I would never donate to this but don't we all want to see this video?

I don't know if I NEED to see the video, just like I don't need to see a video of OBL to know he's gone, or video inside that Cleveland house which was recenlty in the news. But like most of Ford stories, reasonability like sources, witnesses, first hand accounts, pictures are never good enough. We need undeniable proof & even with that we still get conspiracy and talk of fake video.

If there is a positive to this, at least there's an international light on a huge problem in this city. A) Light on Ford Nation; NyTimes & even local a segment on Citynews make it distinct that is the white trash EtobiCOKE with their paranoia, conspiracy, whaa I'm a victim attitude & jealous that support this idiot.

B)Light on Ford, Ford likes to promote himself as a "normal guy" and only elitist and enemies exaggerate his faults. The international reaction to this clowns past deeds is as shocked as his current crack story. Sure this crack story is the most over-the-top, but the buffoonery that went beforhand was more than enough sign to know what he's about.

C)Light on local media, the international media must be asking why the hell does this huge city, only The Star has been doing reporting on Ford. Where is everybody else? Why are the other media outlets not pulling their weight. Even with this story it took gawker to be the second outlet? Now the complacent media is demanding answers from Ford when before they were silent or even blaming the Star for doing their job.

IF the video surfaces showing Ford smoking crack, anyone who says it's fake is an idiot. Seems some people think that because movies employ CGI, anyone can do it. Convincing CGI that looks like a real human being would literally cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to create 90 seconds worth. And there's a reason the most successful CGI effects feature non-human characters (e.g.: Gollum or Avatar). Because creating a human character that looks absolutely realistic is still practically impossible.

There's absolutely no doubt this video exists, is well lit and clear, and features Rob Ford. Three different people have seen it... and these people all have credibility.

Ford supporters are holding on to this sliver of doubt that the video is fake, but we all know it's not fake. Like you said, it's damn tough to fool three savvy journalists with a video of Rob Ford talking and smoking crack.

Once again, Rob Ford is lying instead of being accountable for his actions. I no longer expect anything else from this sad excuse of a mayor.

Somalian

As a Somalian who frequents the Dixon and Kipling community, the allegations against Rob Ford seem true.

Crack cocaine is a big problem around there. Based on the description,[1] | these are the buildings the video was taken (allegedly).[2] Those buildings contain a HUGE Somali population (i used to live there) and that whole area is called "little mogadishu.

Many other Somalians think that the allegations are true, and trustworthy members of our community claimed to have seen the video. The Dixon/Kipling Somali community is working as hard as we can to track down the guys with the video. With the social reach we have, we'll hopefully find them.

My uncle who heads a Somali mosque/community centre near there said he has organized an appointment with Kevin Donovan and Robyn Doolittle (the reporters who saw the video), so he can get a description of the guys in the car who showed it to them. But, what can we do? We're just a bunch of pirates.

@Somalian Don't scare them off. If the video disappears, too many questions will remain unanswered.

Dave Williams

David Milgaard, Guy Paul Morin, Donald Marshall, Rob Ford. Any common denominators here that the mass see? All convicted, all fabricated evidence.

Please stop littering my site with nonsense. Rob Ford hasn't been convicted of anything with fabricated evidence.

@Dave

Shouldn't you be listening to Coast To Coast at this time of night?

It would be even funnier if the video was created to entrap the Toronto media....

Richard Florida's Beyond the Rob Ford embarrassment is a broken Toronto

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/commentary/beyond-the-rob-ford-embarrassment-is-a-broken-toronto/article12016032/

"I’ve called him the worst mayor in the modern history of cities, an avatar for all that is small-bore and destructive of the urban fabric, and the most anti-urban mayor ever to preside over a big city.

I have tracked urban affairs for three decades, and I have never seen anything like this – not in my native Newark, N.J. , which has seen so many of its mayors in legal jeopardy or behind bars, not with Marion Barry or Kwame Kilpatrick. Those were mayors of broken cities. Mr. Ford is the mayor of a thriving, growing, and in many ways model metropolis."

@ Anonymous: Good comment in Florida's article. Maybe the Rob Ford debacle is maybe the straw that sets the wheels in motion.

Well... it looks like the person who is running Rob Ford's twitter acct, is now following the Gawker author who broke the "Rob Ford smoking Crack Cocaine" story

What's key there is that Rob Ford definitely does not write his own tweets nor does he manage the account.

Don Cherry doesn't manage his Twitter account, but he writes every tweet send from that account. That isn't the case with our mayor.
