Slow news day, not much to talk about. Just wanted to check in and say Hi. If any news develops today I will check back in.

If only there was something to talk about...

Let me take this opportunity to say this....

If you're here to talk about the allegations our mayor smokes crack, please do it here:

If you're here to talk about anything else, including anything else Ford related, this is the place.

Let me say this. My 11-year old son is still leading our hockey pool and I'm very proud of him.

So Kathleen Wynne says she's "really, really sorry". OK fine, now pay back the half billion your party cost the taxpayers.

4.8-magnitude earthquake felt from Ottawa to Toronto. Minor shaking lasted about 10 seconds; no damage reported.

And I never felt a thing.

May 17, 2013 @ 10:01 AM

On the 4th floor at Highway 7 & Leslie. Felt like someone was gently shaking my chair. Twitter confirms the quake was felt from Ottawa to Buffalo.

May 17, 2013 @ 10:01 AM

Ottawa Mike

Earthquake is reported as a 3.1 magnitude by Earthquake Canada. (CBC Report here:

Felt like a low tremor. First thought the winds had picked up and were rattling the walls. Looked outside and the tree leaves were barely moving. Nothing really going on here in the Nation's Capital.

Maybe the earthquake is a sign that things are about to change in Sens series with the Penguins. Could it be a sign?

I'm on the 20th floor (when I'm not in my mom's basement) and it felt like I was on crack. I mean, if I knew what it feels like to be on crack.

In other news good riddance to Duffy. That Dbag shouldn't even be allowed in politics. Bravo for Stephan Harper and his scum for paying off the debt and claiming Duffy had done it and how much of a stand up guy he is.

May 17, 2013 @ 10:12 AM

Surprised by the actions of Mike Duffy...he spent years commenting about "cronyism" and back door deals in Ottawa and then suddenly he's completely immersed in it...

I’m not too upset buy the loss of a casino in TO…However, if managed well the revenue generated could have brought some much needed help to the infrastructure…the key phrase being “managed well”

Canada does not need a senate. It's a constitutional relic that needs to go the way of the dodo bird.

May 17, 2013 @ 10:16 AM

Nursing cuts across the province have got to stop. You take away the front-line care in hospitals and you'll see patient care decline even more so thatn it has been. Nurses are already grossly overworked.

May 17, 2013 @ 10:22 AM

My God! I agree 100% with Ben and Mike on Duffy and the Senate.

May 17, 2013 @ 10:41 AM

Elba - I agree with you 100% (and maybe more). Too much of the incremental funding that has gone to healthcare has been to "support" an increasingly and disproportionately large bureaucracy - nowhere near enough for front line patient care. Then again, too much bureaucracy begets even more bureaucracy to "preserve" budgets and the internal culture. The last thing Canadian need is more bureaucrats to deliver patient care.

May 17, 2013 @ 10:44 AM

Slow news day and Argie agreeing with Mike.. I'm going to buy a lottery ticket!
WHAT a crazy 24 hours! Good thing I've got that pre-purchased and stockpiled booze to help me through the weekend... I wonder though, if a last minute 'deal' was always in the cards.. I didn't really ever think they would actually strike. Maybe I'm naive..

May 17, 2013 @ 11:07 AM

I didn't feel any earthquake, not at all. I guess it's really bad in Ottawa though.

As for hockey, my Habs are finished and I look forwawrd to another Habs and Coyotes season next year. for the playoffs, I'm going with the Bruins now. Why not. It was great they beat my hated Leafs. Oh well, this is just for the playoffs. Next season it's back to my coyotes.

4x4 Time

In Chicago for meetings and went to see the Cubs and Rockies Wednesday night. Anyway, they had a Rawlings promotion thing going on outside Wrigley, and had some batting cages you could go in and try. The sign said something like "Try and Hit Major League Pitching".
I selected "assorted" for the pitch selection (top speed was 89 mph) fo rmy 10 pitches.
1. Never even touched a ball
2. The speed and movement these balls came at me is unreal
3. I have a new appreciation for ball players who hit even faster pitches that are dancing all over the place.

No earthquake here in SK. Just the dog running towards the horizon for hours and hours...

I was going to mention Mike Duffy today too, and how terribly disappointed I am in him. I really respected him as a newsman and figured he'd bring some honest character to the world of politics. What a sad shame his appointment has turned out to be. The Senate needs to be gone. It's a lifetime reward, a golden opportunity for abuse, and a drain on taxpayers.

Thanks very much for that website on jogging. I did the first step on Wednesday and managed fine. Oh, I was tired, as I do not have much stamina yet, but I had a bit of gas left in the tank afterwards and I followed the instructions properly. I will go out again today for the same workout. Yesterday I balanced it with walking only and actually did about 15,000 steps. That was to/from work (30 mins total), another 40 minutes at lunch time along the trail, and then about 45 minutes in the evening doing errands with my wife (we left the van at home).

Anyway, this looks like a very promising and safe program. I really appreciate it!

Only the Toronto Sun would attack an incredible person for all young kids to look up to & by that I mean Commander Chris Hadfield.

Simon Kent actually called Hadfield's mission all fluff & no circumstance.(not those exact words but the meaning is correct).

You want to get depressed? Read the Toronto Sun, all their reporters bring you way down.

& I wonder who they are going to blame if Ford's alledged drug use is legit.

Just waiting for the Sue-Ann Levy story on that one.

Who's actually reading the Sun?

Everytime I come in contact with a copy, at a donut shop or while my car's being fixed or whatever, it leaves ink all over my hands.

And the content... mostly car and stereo ads. The sports section was okay, but the news was always shallow and fluffy.

May 17, 2013 @ 4:52 PM

@4x4 Time - I had trouble with a 90 mph "assorted" batting cage (at Playdium) until I started swinging higher than I thought I should be. I never played hardball unfortunately.

@Toronto Mike - I felt nothing either. I only was aware of it because my girlfriend visiting Ottawa felt it strongly.

@Blind Dave - glad you appreciate it. It's been very popular for a long time. I that guide was first posted in 1996 and has helped hundreds of thousands of people getting started. You might find that you're actually able to accelerate the pace a bit. It's sort of intended for the truly unfit.

@Tom - searching the Toronto Sun, the Hadfield articles generally seem positive. The Kent article is pretty damn ignorant, like he didn't even try to find out what was going on behind the scenes. Of course the flashy stuff is going to grab attention -- and frankly the space programme NEEDS attention. Shame it wasn't an American astronaut however, since NASA is the vast bulk of the funding. At least all the commenters are taking Kent to task. "Sour grapes" indeed.

May 17, 2013 @ 5:19 PM

Duffy, This story never really surprised me, never thought much of him as a political journalist, his flip on Dion was disgusting, and for a top political journalist to get political welfare which is exactly what the Senate is just shows what type of person he is.

What does stun me is that he worked in the media, he more than anybody would know how bad this looks. You'd expect this from some "donation guy" who gets a Senate gig and had no idea this sort of sh*t hit the fan. My gosh he tried to escape from reporters a few months back trying to sneak out via the kitchen, which of course makes it look even more shady.

Casino, So the money that was never promised or never there Ford thought if he stomped his feet he can get whatever he wants. Sorry Robby these are not your parents. You can't just wish money to appear. That's pretty much his strategy for everything.

But what about Godfrey, he's the type of guy who always seems to get a high profile job but his success ratio is pretty low. He's been wanting to get the NFL here for a few decades now, his time at the Blue Jays could be argued that it was the teams worst era and now this.

May 17, 2013 @ 5:34 PM

And now for something more serious.

Does anyone have a good remedy for athletes foot?

It's been bothering me for a over month. I feel silly going to the doctors for this problem.

Another twist in the Tim Bosma murder case. Dellen Millard it has been suggested was the last person to talk to a young lady who hasn't been heard from for almost a year. Just gets more unreal everyday.

I have pretty well lost all faith and respect for the political process and the politicians within it. No one talks straight and admits wrong doing, possible conflicts, and in Duffy's case, someone who should have known better and held others to a higher standard, he got further into the trough deeper than others it seems. And the fact Harper and the other PC's I heard putting their spin on the gifted $90,000 just made me want to scratch out my eyes. I never made Mike Duffy kinf of money, but I could scratch up $90,000 if needed. He just expected someone else to pay his freight.
Wynne and McGuinty can profess how sorry they are but it's truly just BS to save their parties ass for the next election. I support Harper, but the US 2 term sitting rule is looking like a pretty good option, he is getting close to his past due date. Usually the scandals start to roll out on the 2nd to 3rd term, just ask Chretien and the Liberals.

May 17, 2013 @ 10:32 PM

Gawker is trying to raise $200,000 in 10 days to purchase the video of Ford smoking crack.

If they meet the target, they'll buy the video and post it on their site.
If they fail to reach the target, you get your donation back.
If they reach the target, but the deal for the video falls apart, the money will be donated to a Canadian non-profit organization that treats drug addicts.

Head over to for the deets.

We've leaked into the Open Mike here... with the Ford crack smoking chat happening here, but since it's Saturday.... why not.

I'm uncomfortable with the idea of giving any of my hard earned money to drug dealers. I wouldn't donate a penny to this cause.

Having said that, we need the video in order to determine once and for all if it's the real deal or not. I suspect it is, as I've said, but until we know for sure Rob Ford will just deny, deny, deny as he always does.

Considering how major a story this is, and how serious the accusations are, I'm blown away by how little Rob Ford said about it yesterday and the complete lack of official denial statements from his office.

I see he just cancelled his 1010 propaganda show tomorrow. This ain't over, folks.

May 18, 2013 @ 11:04 AM

Sorry to break the no-Ford rule, Mike. I actually tried to post in the other thread, but the comment was blocked. Then I figured the comments had descended to such a level of inanity there that folks were probably avoiding that thread altogether.

I get what you're saying about giving money to drug dealers, but this is probably the best way we have to verify the video. I hope they raise the cash.

Where is Brother Doug? Usually this guy is ranting & raving about another witch hunt against his brother but he seems silent, too silent.

I think the gig is up. No one in this world is legit, everyone of us a dirty little secret.

May 18, 2013 @ 12:49 PM

Um, Gerogie was a huge illegal drug user (all sorts of drugs).

Perhaps he's kicked the habit but God knows he still has other disordered addictions.

May 18, 2013 @ 1:27 PM

I know this is wanting to be Ford free. But Leroy mentioned Brother Doug. He came out of his hole & said to CFRB "Never seen my brother involved with anything like Coke". But than again just last month Tweedle dee said he never saw Tweedle Dumb drink, even Fords biggest media cheerleaders didn't buy that. That's the problem being a compulsive liar, you waste good lies at unnessary times.

@RickC, I agree, I think most governmnets have expiring days, especially with majorities. You become lazy and full with your own power. I remember during the Lib race there discussion can Trudeau raise the Liberals enough to become PM, but what wasn't wondered or asked is how much does the current Conservatives will fall.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I have been impressed with Wynne take over of the Liberal party, they did the exchange pretty well and decent timing for her to build her own niche with the transit file. The problem with pervious times (Eves, Campbell, Martin) they were left just holding the bag, if she can be different (casino, transit) she might win this.

Also doesn't hurt that she's up against two idiots. Hudak is dumb enough to pander to the Fords, who will stab him in the back in a second, & as we learned the Fords are so flakey they can combust at any time. Horwath is not much better with her Bania from Seinfeld impression, "You owe me a favor, you owe me dinner". Then complaining about the dinner. Horwath changing the goalposts daily is making her look annoying.

It's actually a great moral debate. I'm sure teachers and professors will be throwing it at students next month.

Releasing this video is for the greater good. Toronto's citizens have a right to see it for themselves, especially now that Rob Ford is denying it completely. Of course, Rob Ford always lies, but he seems to have this 30% base that will follow him and forgive him no matter what. But I digress....

So we should be able to see this video, but it means dealing with drug dealers and giving them a large sum of money. What a moral dilemma!

May 18, 2013 @ 3:58 PM

@Corey&Mike, you are right, paying drug dealers for information is a heck of a dilemma, not even sure where I fall under what I support. The sad thing is that the public feels the need to try to gather money to get information that media should be doing, the entire media (not named The star) has failed at their job, also shows that NOBODY thinks the authorites will go after Ford on their own.

Another thing I'm certain of is whatever the Star did this month, Fords cheerleaders on radio would have been critical. It's amazing that guys like Richards & Agar on CFRB have the nerve to be critical of the Star in not getting the video. I would bet if the Star did, the spin will be "Could you believe the Star give drug dealers a hundred thousand just to get at the mayor!"

It's so insulting that the CFRB crew like Richards & Agar is questioning the Star for not getting proof, when their program director of CFRB said he got the same call, but when hearing the price they didnt follow up on it. How DARE anybody from CFRB be critical of The Star doing a job that CFRB "news" department didn't bother. But why would we expect RB to do that to their weekend propaganda infomercial host.

@annom, yeah I don't think it's a coincidence, just watching them, it comes from their spoiled upbringing.

May 18, 2013 @ 4:51 PM

Quantico, Virginia

Such an interesting debate on Rob Ford and his possible drug usage.

To start, even if the video is released it would be extremely difficult to ascertain what substance he was smoking. A wide variety of drugs can be smoked.

By nature, humans are creatures of habit. They are highly predictable at all levels to the point of even being geographically criminally predictable . Take for example Kim Rossmo's formula on geographical profiling. Mr Rossmo was the first detective to point out there was a serial killer in Vancouver. He also was adamant that David Milgaard was innocent. This later turned out to be true.

Rob Ford is certainly a questionable character. Even with a lengthy career as a public figure he seems to lack the understanding of emotional control. His actions are nothing short of incredulous and quite frankly, they are baffling. Compare his actions to an actor or musician who is unbridled and sometimes out of control. Unbridled, out of control musicians or actors generally end up where...

When a man has a large fence around his house, is it for privacy or secrecy? Look at the choice of vehicle; a large expensive car says a great deal about a persons personality.

There is an old saying that actions speak louder than words.

Probably one of the best Open Mikes for awhile, not too much(none really) name calling, and some really interesting points of view on the Rob Ford situation etc.!
@ Tron, excellent points on the Star, suspect they are just a little gun shy on buying this and exposing it just as you have stated, given the lack of traction they have gotten in the past on anything Ford. Believe me I haven't been a cheerleader on the Stars coverage of Rob Ford, but their just seems too much swirling around him that makes you think second about it possibly having some truth. He should have been busting the Stars Azz this weekend instead of hiding from it.

Since we had that 4-game win streak, I thought I'd look at how things went for us against the AL East the past 10 games

We went 5-5. We lost ground to the Yankees and Rays, kept pace with the Orioles and made up one game on the Red Sox.

It's going to be super tough for this club to climb back to .500 and I don't think we'll do it. And as you know, .500 doesn't get you close to the playoffs.

Why waste time when they could be working on other problems to solve. If it is not just so certain people can posture and say "we won", what is the agenda?

Ford saw he didn't have the numbers and left it in some sort of amateur limbo and council's trying to kill it dead.

The last original drive-in closed. =(

The land was sold years ago to Sharon (the town) for development (spin on floor). The town basically turned the screws this year. Combine that with the owners getting older, movie distributors forcing digital projectors (and all the legal hassles that come with it)-- and le sigh. No more drive-in just north of Newmarket.

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Is that drive in still open in Grand Bend?

May 19, 2013 @ 12:28 PM

I think so. There seems to be a few left, Barrie, Oakville, etc. The North York was just one of the originals.

FYI: If anyone's planning a last minute thing to do tonight, go to one of the drive-ins! They are all doing their dusk-till-dawn holiday features. For example the Barrie one is showing 4 movies for like $15. Look at that lineup! For $15, you get to see Star Trek, Pain&Gain, GI Joe and Hansel&Gretel. The Oakville one has the same lineups.

If you've never been to a drive-in before, it's an awesome experience. Seeing movies either in the comfort of your car, or outdoors under a blanket. Enjoying some takeout food that you totally didn't sneak in (supplemented by something good from the snack bar, of course ;) ). Letting the kids run themselves silly so they sleep through the rest of the movies.

It's a fun, fairly inexpensive evening out.

I don't wish to pile on Cheryl, but Sidney Crosby is the best player in the NHL, bar none. To do what he has consistently done over the years is not overrated. And to do what he has done in the playoffs, after a shortened season and suffering a serious - and targetable - injury, is nothing short of skill, heart, and dedication. Cheryl, if Sid were playing for the Habs, you'd have him on a higher pedestal than PK Subban.

Yes, Wright did the right thing to resign, and again, I am very disappointed in Duffy -- as someone who clearly knew better and could have done better. But I will not dump on the Conservatives specifically. This is political patronage at its worst, all parties are guilty, and this is a culture that needs to change for the benefit of ALL Canadians. The Senate needs to be abolished at the earliest possible opportunity.

Beautiful mid-20s weather all weekend long. I got the deck in order and mowed the lawn, and my wife is planting the edibles and non-edibles at this moment. We are going for a long walk later today to get our daily exercise.

We also got to take our granddaughter out in the stroller for the first time Friday evening. She's eleven months old and I am just blown away by the look on her face (yes I can see it -- just) when she sees something for the first time. She saw a bird and then arched her neck as the bird saw us and flew away. I can only imagine the wonder going on inside her head.

And yes, this is a fantastic Open Mike. Happy Long Weekend and Happy BBQ'ing, everyone!!!

I went to the city to watch TFC play yesterday. Spadina was blocked off with construction and parking was 20.00. I get to the game and tall boys were ten bucks and chilidogs 14 bucks. You add the price of two tickets and gas and I am out over a hundred dollars. Will I pay tolls on the roads to drive into the city? Not a chance!!!!!!

How about those Bruins. That game was good. They won 5 to 2. They're up 2 to 0. The Rangers might win the next two. I don't want that, but I want a seven-game series. The Bruins will win though. The Rangers will be gone. Then the Bruins are going to beat Pittsburgh. Crosby is overrated. He can be beaten. Then they go and beat Chicago to win the Cup. Hockey until July, guys. Everything goes seven games. Next year my Habs will win the cup.

@ Blind Dave. Cherish your moments with your Grand Daughter, as you know how fast time flew with your own kids. Glad you have enough sight to take in all the fun stuff.
@Tim: You got legally robbed, I feel that way when I use to go to the movies with my kids, the munchies, drinks etc. broke down to the cost of a nice dinner out. As if we aren't taxed enough.

Thks @Rick C Not to mention that TFC stunk up the joint. I have seen better soccer played in pick up games on a Sunday afternoon.

Crosby can be beaten though. Anyway, this year the Bruins win the cup. Next year it will be my Habs and Coyotes to the finals and Habs win the cup. Still a very long time until the Leafs win the cup.

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

The way I look at it, my Leafs came within a hair of beating the Bruins in the first round. In fact, it took a miracle for the Bruins to advance.

If the Leafs just about took them out, how good can they be?

I've got the Penguins in the finals against Chicago... but possibly LA.
