Mike, you gonna keep the Leaf logo up for the next three games?

I'm not a huge sports fan, but I thought this was a reasonable take on the Leafs' playoff woes:

And to all those who said my Jays logo was jinxing us, I'd just like to point out that we've been much worse since I took it down.

Folks, we have one awful, awful baseball team. On Twitter, I'm promoting the new hashtag #FuckThisTeam.

This infuriates me.

Driving in to work today, I noticed the person in the passenger seat throw a bunch of paper out the window.

As a single tear slid down my cheek like that Indian guy from that '70's era PSA,I wondered...just what the hell is wrong with people?

I could almost understand it if it was a couple of kids, but as i pulled up beside them, I noticed it was two grown-ass adults.

Since the licence plate indicated where they were from, I wanted to politely advise them to hold off on dumping their trash until they returned to their own goddamn province of Quebec. I've done this before when I've seen people litter. But, today I did not. I didn't want to start my Friday, and weekend, off on a confrontational note, so I let it slide.

Last week I was at a resort in Aruba. My wife and I were in the poolbar. She noticed a guy sitting by the side of the pool having a cigarette. Instead of getting his selfish wrinkled ass up, he proceeded to flick the ash directly onto the deck of the pool (where people walk). Of course, the wind caught the ash and it all blew right into the pool. If that wasn't enough, a few seconds later he went to flick the cigarette butt itself into a nearby bush (you lazy fuck), but it sort of missed the mark and although it didn't go into the pool it too hit the deck and was still lit.

It's a resort. There are people walking around barefoot, including kids.

My wife went up to this guy and politely brought this to his attention. He just looked at her and said: "Who cares?"

Friends, it's precisely this type of moronic thinking that is killing this planet dead, and it can't be soon enough. I want off this stinking rock.

Things wrong with the Blue Jays:

1. Starting pitching
2. Defense
3. Hitting
4. Manager

I doubt replacing Gibbons will have Buehrle suddenly stop throwing those meatballs.

It's the amazing audio that keeps me watching Jays games on Sportsnet. It sounds so damn good.

When the Yankees swept us, I had a heart-to-heart with my brother Ryan. Ryan has really drank the kool-aid. He still believes that ridiculous pre-season hype that we're the best team in the majors. Even though he's watching, he only sees what the team looked like on paper and doesn't seem to give much weight to how they actually play on the field.

During this convo, he said we'd sweep the Red Sox. When we won game one, which we almost threw away and didn't really deserve to win, he told me we'd definitely sweep and were on our way to that amazing run that would put us in the playoffs.

Then, while the Leafs were getting trounced by the Bruins, the Jays were getting walloped by the Sox at the dome. That's all we needed to know about this team. I was certain we'd lose yesterday, too, because that's what awful teams do.

And this team is very, very bad. I'm going to write about this next week and have a special "What's Wrong With Our Blue Jays" podcast episode. I'm blown away by the difference between the promise of this team and the result thus far. It's the largest such gap in Toronto sports history, because the 1994 season doesn't count.

But great sound... when the Jays strike out with runners on base, I can hear the win against the bat like I'm the catcher.

May 3, 2013 @ 10:32 AM

Argie

After the Jays acquired their news players I remember thinking, its a good team - they just need a good manager to get them to the playoffs.

I certainly wasn't one of these delusional Jays fans who actually thought this team was a sure thing to get to the playoffs and to likely win it. They have a few star players like Reyes and Bautista but their pitching was questionable going to into the season. Dickey, Johnson and the others are all roll-of-the-dices. Dickey was given the Roger Clemens treatment when he arrived (wow, he's written a book!). Yes, he just came off a Cy Young season but he had shown little throughout his career up to 2012.

The bottom line though is that they've blown the season with this terrible start. They would have to kick some ass to get to the post season. I don't think it can happen - even if they change the manager. The should anyway just so they can get to .500.

Lastly, it looks good on Rogers and their cheerleaders at the Fan.

Ryan C: I had a buddy that whenever he saw someone flick a butt out of their car window at a stoplight he'd jump out of his car, grab still smoking butt, walk up to the car and knock on the window. As soon as the offender rolled down the window he say “You dropped this” and chuck the butt into their back seat. It always blew me away as he was probably the calmest laid back person I’ve met. I guess it just really bugged him.

Okay, I know to many Don Cherry is an irrelevant dinosaur, and should have been taken off the air long ago based on his views alone. I'm not necessarily one of those people but based on his performance at the beginning of the second intermission, I think he should be taken off the air because he can't keep up anymore. I literally thought he was stroking out on Wednesday night, so much so that I kept rewinding so I could transcribe verbatim what he said. Read this and tell me this if this isn't proof of an addled mind:

"Here's the story. I hear about line changes. Randy Carlyle and the Leafs are people that like to match lines. When you match lines...first of all we get to the goal...all right, watch, don't people in the world are as stupid as (incoherent) like that. You...are...do not know when you are going on (and there's a goal), but watch this one. The guys look around and they see the guys on and they get off because they, I mean nobody is that stupid. And when you match lines and as they go along you guys and gals that play hockey when you're on the bench when you match lines,"Should I go? Should - do I go next? No." Like this. It should be a flow like a flow. Nobody is as stupid as that with those line changes. It's because they look around and they see the line they shouldn't be on with, they shouldn't be on with, they change lines. Matching lines to me is absolutely ridiculous and that's the proof positive."

My Habs blew it last night. They were leading 2 to 1 after two periods, but then go lose 4 to 2. Go figure. Also Lars Eller got hurt. It was bad. He had to get put on a stretcher. It was so bad. This Ottawa guy hit him. Can't remember his name, but I hate that jerk from Ottawa doing this. Anyway, it's only one game. There are six more to go because it will go seven games. Habs in seven. they'll win tonight. I want the hockey season to last a lot longer. If it goes into July, who cares. Sure better than boring baseball. Who cares about the Jays. They're bad, but so what. They won't make the playoffs. I really don't care about baseball. I said the Diamondbacks were my favourite team, but that's because I like Arizona. Not exactly sure how they're doing, but probably better than the Jays. Playing baseball is okay I think. I just hate listening to it. It's so boring.

Corey,

It does seem like its time to put him out to pasture - just as Bob Cole should have been several years ago.

However, they will have to find another guy who's not afraid to offend. They don't have to be a carbon copy of Cherry but I would like to see at least one hockey guy have the stones that Cherry has.

Oh and while they're at it, have them can PJ Stock.

There's even more bad news for the Jays.
Rogers will not want a payroll of $125 million+ for a last place team for the next 2 years. Especially when fans will stop going to the games and head for the cottage this summer
Look for a Bautista, Reyes, Dickey, and Encarnacion to be gone by the All Star Game or early in the off season.
The hopes of real grass in the dome is gone now too.
The best the Jays can hope for now is to play the spoiler and prevent Farrell from winning this division.
By the way the Jays face Felix Hernandez tonight. What's the over/under for strikeouts? 18? I bet over

I have to admit I was pumped about the Jays before the season started. Not foolish enough to predict a World Series, but I thought at the very least they could be fun, entertaining, and challenge for a wild card. But this "team" is just plain awful.

re: littering
Last month I was over at a sporting goods store at one of those big box centers.
A woman and her daughter were walking out of the store and the woman crumbled up a piece of paper (which wasn't small - her receipt?) and casually dropped it on the ground. I seldom see people littering, so I was surprised to see it, and shocked at how immediately I was outraged. I went up to her (non-aggressively) and said, "Oops, you seemed to drop something." She brushed it off by saying (with what I interpreted as a heavy European accent) that "... that's ok. No I don't want that". I then said the most xenophobic thing I have ever said "That might be accepted in the country where you came from but now that you are in Canada, that isn't acceptable!" and stormed away. I was livid and I'm still livid about it. Am I crazy?

Mike,

You know whats funny, Jeff Blair, the Globe guy, actually said that Brendan Morrow would be a Cy Young candidate this season.

& Mr. Know-it-all Mike Wilner keeps telling us its not Gibby's fault.

A paper team doesn't win championships. 10 games back. Ya I'd say this team is done & overhyped by the Toronto press.

May 3, 2013 @ 4:33 PM

Blind Dave

@Gump

Nope. Agree with you completely. She was ignorant and rude.

@4x4 Time

That's about right. We may have had a few flakes in October, but the first snow that stayed was Nov 7/8. There was no winter thaw this year. Most of it went away by last weekend, but then last Sunday night we got a few inches of heavy, wet snow that snapped some pretty fair sized tree branches. By today, it is almost all gone again, though there are still some snow piles around in areas that haven't got any sun.

We're in for a very nice weekend, so hopefully this is it. It has been a long, hard winter.

@JJ

The gap between promise and performance with this team is enormous, but compelling. I can't stop reading about it, thinking about it and debating it with friends and family.

Part of Gibbons' problem is that he doesn't look like he really cares. He seems to be one of those managers who stays out of the way and lets his players play. That's fine when everything is clicking, but a big problem when a team faces adversity.

At the plate and with the starting pitching it's as if every player is having their worst season ever at the exact same time. I just told my brothers that if Rajai Davis is leading your team in batting average, you might have a problem. I repeat, Rajai Davis is leading this team in batting average. Digest that for a moment...

And I'm very, very worried about what will happen to Ricky Romero tonight. One start against A quality batters and he's back? Really? Yikes!

So much is wrong... so little is right. At least we have Casey Janssen, the one player still bringing a smile to my face.

May 3, 2013 @ 4:51 PM

Glen

Jose Bautista has been noticeably quiet this year too.

I'm not talking about his bat.

He is suppose to be the club leader and I've heard NOTHING from him about how badly this team has played.

May 3, 2013 @ 6:10 PM

4x4 Time

The Jays problems fall on AA not any player..This is not a good TEAM. Bautista has never been a leader, just a dude who has carved out a huge contract and good on him...Just cause he scores in the pay check dept does not qualify him as a leader...Does a leader argue with umps on every close call?

@4x4 time, flight costs in Canada are absolutely brutal, when you can get an all inclusive to Mexico for the cost of a flight to Newfoundland. Shuffling off to Buffalo is the only option.

I am quite tired of the Jays and their lack of anything but #hashtags. Maybe they should spend less time #hashtagging and more time working on basic defensive plays so there aren't so many errors and botched double plays. We don't need to see every plate call questioned - these players are supposed to be showing kids how to respect the umpire and thereby respect the game. It's like the boy who cried wolf.. maybe a call did go the wrong way but that ump isn't going to change anything for a couple of whiny players. I love baseball and will always be a Jays fan, but they have to really figure out what is going on and get it fixed. But Seattle's King Felix? I've seen him play in Seattle and Jays never had a chance.

@Gump Good for you! I hate litterers too.

I also agree Don Cherry's time has really come to an end. He just doesn't make sense anymore. That business about line changes on Wednesday night just really was a bunch of words (thank you @Corey for the verbatim translation). While we're all aware the game is much faster today than 'yesterday' Don still talks about the days of him coaching and how we should use that as a measuring stick for what we should be doing today. When I was a kid in the 70s I wore shorts and knee socks. Point is, we remember the past but know there's no point living there.

@Mike/@Rosie #34 and #36 are waiting for my listen this weekend. I already listened to #35. I do like that.. while sometimes you do refer to past podcasts, one can always listen out of order. Excellent job, by the way.. They're great.

@dave,

Ack...I just threw up a little in my mouth. I gave up red meat over two years ago - no regrets and not because I'm against eating meat.

You hit a certain age and the body starts to do things that make you unhappy. Gave up beer 6 years ago due to the same reasons and I miss it dearly - I don't miss red meat.

As for all the Jays fans - believe me, I'm right with you. I have to come to every game and even though I'm getting paid to be here to work, it still does not make for a happy work environment. I hope they can start to put it together - but I'm starting to lose faith. Players play the game - simple as that. A manager or a GM can't make a ball player hit a ball or fuck up a double play, but you reach a point where you go "now what?"

Oh well, vacation next week. Get away from here and think about rum drinks and scuba diving with my son.

Cheers!

@Corey,

I personally like Don Cherry a lot. As @Lyle and @Argie said, you'd be hard pressed to find a guy with bigger stones than Don.

With regard to your transcript, I bet you could find an equally odd-ball sounding one coming from Ron MacLean, these guys have so much going on in such a short period of time, in a small(ish) broadcast room that I am surprised they get out what they do.

Ron has an earpiece so someone is constantly squawking in his ear, I don't know of Don does, probably not, but there are people standing in front of him gesturing constantly and they have 8 minutes (+/-) to tell all of the stories they have for the week. I hope I'm 1/2 as coherent at 79 as Don Cherry is.

As for his respond to women in the dressing room, I don't think most people understood what he said. In my opinion, he wasn't saying they don't "belong" there as in, have the right to be there, rather, as an old fashion man brought up with respect and honour, he didn't feel women should be subjected to the crap that goes on in dressing rooms. He was thinking more about them as women, than as "reporters".

I never understood any reporter in the dressing room of any sport. Forget the "can male reporters go in the dressing rooms of female athletes", how about a reporter going in to the locker room at Ford, or the Metropolitan Toronto Police, etc... I heard people talking about it being "their office", etc, I think even Ron MacLean said that, but didn't get to finish his thought. No reporter would ever get to do that, so why can they with Pro athletes?

Give them the media scrum after the game and everyone can get their questions answered then in an open forum where no one is getting dressed. Talk to them in the hallway leading to the dressing room like they do between periods if you want the "immediate reaction" to the game.

Soooo.Ricky Romero is back with the Blew Jays.Has been at single A for the past month. At what point did his "Beauty Queen" girlfriend tell him she wanted to "see other people" ??
My guess is about 36 hours after he told her that he wasn't going back to Toronto any time soon.

I spent the day at Sorauren Park. My son isn't playing baseball at High Park this summer so I haven't been there as often as usual.

I understand they're in full bloom right now though.

Well, I happen to love meat that is cooked rare. The rarer the better. Cooking meat well done takes all the juices out of it and makes it like shoe leather. No, I love rare meat and the rarer the better.

Well, looking forwawrd to my Habs tomorrow. PK Subban has to get a goal or an assist though. My Habs will win. I have no sympathy for your Jays losing. Who cares. Leafs will lose as well.

Anyway, remember Bob Seger's birthday is on Monday. I'll be playing lots of his stuff. Bob Seger's voice is so beautiful. He's so good and it's his birthday on Monday.

Have you ever had food poisoning with meat not cooked enough. I've had it twice & not pretty as I missed my Grade 13 mid term exams in the hospita many years ago.
I guess you love Blue meat, just like the Leafs.

The BLEW JAYS have already are DONE this year as an absolute JOKE especially the
GIBBY the mgr.

Actually, I got the same vibe from the Don Cherry rant as you did. I thought he was seeing things as an old-fashioned gentleman who believes women should be treated with respect and not be subjected to "he-man" bullshit.

I also agree with the bit about the locker room being a personal area and off-limits to ALL outsiders.

---

When the jays were down 1-0 after one inning, I tweeted to Andrew that it's 9-0 prorated. I guess 8-1 is awfully close. Anyway, it was an "errand afternoon" so I missed the last seven innings, thankfully.

These guys aren't even "loveable losers". They are just thoroughly disappointing.

That was a cruel and usual punishment it seems lately :) It's getting tougher and tougher to come to the ballpark.

I hope they get some kind of win today. It's going to be awfully quiet in here if they continue down this path.

Oh well...one more today before holidays!!!

Cheers,
Andrew

I never had food poisoning from rare meat. I really haven't. I have been eating rare meat for years. Anyway, too well cooked and it's like shoe leather.

Yes, the Leafs won last night. That was no good. If they win the cup, I won't be here. I'll be hiding in a hole for a long time with all my music of course. I'll be listening to Bob Seger's beautiful voice hiding in the hoel as well as John Mellencamp's beautiful voice and all my other favourite modern country artists. Anyway, the Jays are done. The Diamondbacks are probably doing better than the Jays. I hope so because I like Arizona, but baseball is a dumb boring game. Anyway, everyone should listen to Bob Seger tomorrow because it's his birthday tomorrow.

My Habs lost. That game really sucked. It was awful. My Habs lost and that was no good at all. I'm worried now. Maybe I should get my hole ready to hide in because that's what I'll do if the Leafs win the cup.

Everyone and his/her grandmother posts the May the 4th now, so I've decided to stop.

My Habs have to turn it around. They just have to. Anyway, if the Leafs win the cup, you guys have to help me dig a hole. That's the deal. I need a hole to hide in and I'll be in that hole for a long time. I hate the Leafs. I always hated the Leafs. I'm a Habs fan and have been for years. Remember it's Bob Seger's birthday today. Bob Seger is the best. He should be the king, not Elvis. Bob is still alive and will be for a long time yet.
