10 minutes away from buying a jersey and climbing on that band-wagon

Possibly the biggest choke in NHL history. It seems that since the invention of colour TV, the Leafs cannot win when it matters.

Yesterday had two big positives (for me, that is).

One, I wore shorts for the first time this year. Yay!

Two, I went jogging for the very first time since having to run in high school 35 years ago. I didn't have a lot of stamina, but I went out for half an hour and I walked, jogged, walked, jogged in 30 second spurts. Then my wife and I did our usual half an hour walk in the evening. I can honestly say I am really enjoying the diet and exercise, though I have hit a bump at 185 and can't seem to get under it for now.

Today it is cold and rainy, so back to jeans and a light jacket.

May 14, 2013 @ 9:16 AM

Easy Dave W - you're a Habs fan, right? The Sens made quick work of your guys.

@Argie, the Senators deserved the victory. They played a fantastic series.

May 14, 2013 @ 9:30 AM

@Blind Dave: the healthiest I've ever been in my entire life came from following this introduction to running programme:

Unfortunately I developed shin splints at some point, and once those went away, I got IBS ... now I'm worse off than before. Trying to make up for it with aggressive cycling, which seems far easier on my guts than running.

May 14, 2013 @ 9:45 AM

I have nothing to say.

May 14, 2013 @ 10:07 AM

Its been quiet on the bash Rob Ford front, eh?

Either he's being a lot more careful or The Star is not trying hard enough to dig up dirt on him.

I've been suppressing my rage, so to speak. He's done a number of disappointing things lately, particularly with regards to the transit tax.... but I don't want to throw up an entry every time Ford does something I disagree with because that's all this blog would be.

May 14, 2013 @ 10:33 AM

...and yet the gas plant cancellation (which cost us over a half bill) by the former and current Premiers doesn't seem to bother in the slightest. How odd.

Sometimes you just make stuff up, don't you?

1. I've never, ever said that.

2. That has absolutely nothing to do with the fact Canada's largest city has a shitty mayor.

May 14, 2013 @ 10:56 AM

And the Auditor General confirmed that Stephen Harper "lost" three billion of our tax dollars. I guess Mike Duffy needed some snacks.

RIP Tim Bosma

May 14, 2013 @ 11:03 AM

Dave Williams

@Mike, Ford does not want to increase taxes, he feels that if the Liberals provincially could waste millions on failed plants, they should have the funds to finance a transit system that will benefit the public.
Am I to assume that you want higher municipal taxes?

May 14, 2013 @ 11:04 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Dave Williams

Nobody wants higher taxes.

The fact is, taxes are necessary to pay for transit. When council was unable to support a tax to pay for transit, they essentially opted out of having a say in the matter. How frustrating is that.

Now the provincial government will do what they feel they have to do and Rob Ford gets to smile and watch it happen just so he can campaign and say he didn't support a tax.

We'll be taxed regardless. It would have been nice if council could recommend the manner in which this happens. His lack of leadership on this issue is both cowardly and inept.

May 14, 2013 @ 11:11 AM

The big difference between Ford and the provincial liberals is that he hasn't cost the taxpayers anything. There's been no financial scandal unlike your liberals who have blown billions in various fuck-ups.

That's what a majority of citizens care about - not whether the mayor dances on a float in the Gay parade or not.

May 14, 2013 @ 11:18 AM

So many unanswered questions, hopefully we will hear something at 2.30 press conference.

May 14, 2013 @ 11:19 AM

Ok, now I have something to say.

If we add up what the provincial liberals have thrown away on E-Health, Ornge, gas plants etc., it is Billions! There would have been enough to not only fund transit but probably a few other projects in the province.

I guess Rob Ford not wanting to throw more taxes at us is really bothersome to the socialists. Tax and spend is all they understand.

Mike - have you ever written about McGuinty and what his government has cost you and all of us??

May 14, 2013 @ 11:19 AM

Dave Williams

@Mike, we had nearly a decade of both cowardly and inept leadership under David Miller. What you are witnessing with Ford is the exact opposite of that. You do not seem to understand that a polititican can be effective and strong by protecting the tax payer first.

May 14, 2013 @ 11:25 AM

RIP Tim Bosma. Just what happened will come out in time, but so far, what has happened is nothing short of sickening. No family should have to go through what they have.

May 14, 2013 @ 11:35 AM

4x4 Time

The debate on how to fund GTHA transit has become comical, if not depressingly bizarre. Ontario and Toronto have operating budgets combined that are $137 Billion supported by taxpayer’s dollars. If these elected politicians cannot find a way to carve out 2% ($2.74B annually) to fund transit development spending out of these already bloated budgets then they do not deserve to be in their jobs. Having said that, I am not expecting anything logical to happen given the track records of the parties in power and the opposition alternatives we have.
Municipal counsellors should have ZERO say in group projects, city planning and should only worry about any needs the people in their ridings have. Most of these councillors are way too self serving and cause most of the delays in getting anything done.

May 14, 2013 @ 11:41 AM

Low-cost wishlist for Toronto's Islington Station:
1) An extra plastic bus shelter along Bloor St.'s sidewalk for non-TTC passengers riding to Mississauga.
2) A Mississauga Transit ticket selling booth accessible without first requiring paid TTC access into that station's expansive overall concourse area.
3) Re-opened inter-transit public washrooms at Islington (after 34 years of being closed, since Kipling took over as the TTC's own end station for Toronto's Bloor Danforth subway line.)
4) Letting 20-odd incoming Mississauga routes offload passengers within the Islington bus bays, instead of dumping everyone into the main street entrance.
5) Better than fixing 1 & 2 - moving back the TTC ticket gates 20 feet or so, to allow for in-station bus terminal access for Mississauga Transit passengers.

The Tim Bosma death is absolutely baffling and so very sad.

What could possibly be the motive? There's no way they'd kill someone for a truck...

May 14, 2013 @ 12:51 PM

Provincial Liberals and Rob Ford as the Mayor are not related.

So Ford supporters will say look how bad McGuinty was....and Ford doesn't want to raise taxes. It doesn't makse sense.

And as a taxpayer outside of Toronto, I don't want billions going to a subway in Scarborough.

So Toronto should find a way to pay for it.

I don't think Toronto residents should pay for an LRT in Kitchener either.

But don't blame Ford! He is so awesome! He won't raise taxes. He'll fund the subway will hopes and dreams and words.

May 14, 2013 @ 12:51 PM

@Blind Dave Way to go, buddy! Stick with it and you'll crack that 185 wall - especially now that the weather in your neck of the woods is improving.

A lot of negative shit is happening these days - my heart just breaks for the Bosma family - burning the body? Jesus. Fucking animals have broken that nice family.

Saw the Great Gatsby on Sunday and thought it was amazing - particularly Tobey Maguire in the role of Nick Carraway. I loved the book so I wasn't sure what the movie would be like. Just excellent.

Our son is in Kenya with school so things have been a bit different around here for the past while (he's an only child). It hasn't been good, it hasn't been bad. Just different. He's back on Saturday. What an incredible opportunity for those kids. His hand shook (kidding) as he handed over his i-phone (they weren't allowed phones, ipods or anything like that). We haven't heard anything beyond one email they were allowed once they landed in Nairobi. We're really looking forward to hearing about their experiences and seeing those pictures. He needed four types of currency so that was a learning experience for all us as we tried to determine the value of Kenyan shillings - the bills are are super colourful and almost pretty. Who knew!

A lot of change is in store for our little family in the fall, too when The Kid leaves for university. I can't tell you just how fast the high school years have gone - don't blink, that's for sure.

@Toronto Mike I really love the posts/podcasts showcasing how much you're enjoying your kids. Before you know it, they'll be filling out their own university applications. You know it's coming but when it actually happens, it's a mind blower.

Eileen is doing a fantastic job on the Humble and Fred show. Funny, witty and saucy. Not a lot gets by her, that's for sure. She adds a ton. I still miss Kelly, though.

@Cheryl How's that hole coming along? Hope there's sketchy internet access there.

May 14, 2013 @ 12:52 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

And I'm not sure why people think I love McGuinty so much.

I voted for the radical reverend Cheri di Novo twice. Why would a McGuinty fan vote against him twice?

Regardless, I'm not loyal to any particular party. In my life I've voted Liberal, NDP and PC at one point or another.

May 14, 2013 @ 12:56 PM

Dave Williams

@Mcnulty; there is a thing called the big picture that you either cannot see or do not realize is there. If every community hoarded its own taxes, we would never have any provincial infrastructure. I am sure in your little hamlet of Kitchener, you never require provincial funds as you are totally self sufficient. All hail King McNulty and his republic of small minds.

May 14, 2013 @ 1:03 PM

No one is saying the issues of Ford and Liberals are related - we're simply comparing a goofy but effective mayor who has moral objections to attending your annual parade and the governing liberals who have wasted billions due to their ineptness.

Also, each day, hundreds of thousands of people from outside use the TTC so the province should contribute to the cost.

May 14, 2013 @ 1:20 PM

Leafs - I actually felt sorry for you last night Mike. They have done this to their fans for so long. Nothing good since '93.

Bosma - So sad and incredibly bizarre. I agree, you do not kill someone for an old truck.

May 14, 2013 @ 1:40 PM

I have laughed at the rationalizations by women of last nights Leafs collapse. Truly young hockey moms trying to find the silver lining. I was once a hockey mom but couldn't have found anything good to find in the post-mortem of last nights game.

But to the current Blue Jays.. Toronto fans would give that fan-support to you too if you want it! Toronto fans are awesome sports fans, and I don't care how many jump on the bandwagon when it comes through town.. It's FUN to be in playoff mode!

May 14, 2013 @ 2:08 PM

Re: Tim Bosma; The only thing I can think of is a botched robbery that escalated.

Anyone out there that rents, how have your experiences been? Would you recommend renting?

May 14, 2013 @ 2:12 PM

I know it's common practice for the Fordites to try to deflect any negative discussion of him to "Hey let's talk about other people" But Angie this has to be the first time somebody brought up Ford, then somebody replied, and that same person who brought up Ford in the first place tries to change the subject. BRAVO!

BTW Mike, I think you should speak out more about things you find faulty in the leaders of this city is doing. You been doing this blog way before Ford became Mayor and hopefully long after he leaves. You have the city right on your title of the blog, obviously the city close to your heart & much more than the current Mayor cares about it. You should speak up even if others try to shut you down.

To say the we can't "trust a govenmnent" because of waste. Every government (and business for that matter)can be accused of waste. Yes even Ford, shelving transit city for a year because he claims he can build subway with pixie dust is waste. Him paving over Jarvis bike lines can be considered waste, Hell he wanted to change the NPS fountain to a splash pad this week, what do you call that?

AS for what's going on with transit, it's disgusting. Transit should be a heart and lung issue, but it turns into a cosmetic issue, where everybody is jealous of everybody else. Ford doesn't give a crap about Scarbrough or transit, but he knew he couldn't run on that. So he throws this "I"ll give you subways" with no real plan.

May 14, 2013 @ 4:35 PM

The health care premiums introduced by Dalton McGuinty 10 years ago never went to the health care system. What makes you think new transit taxes will go to public transit?

Governments will find other uses for that money once it's in place.

You are naive to think otherwise.

Thanks for the link.

It's been a hectic day so I'll give it a good read through tonight after a few errands.

Will let you know.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm taking the slow but sure approach, as it does seem to be the healthiest way to go.

I don't need a hole after all. The Leafs lost and I am glad. They're gone now. Next year my Habs will win the cup again with my Habs and Coyotes to the final

Anyway, I hope George Smitherman will run for Mayor again. We need him. He would have been better than Ford. Too bad a lot of people didn't think so.

May 14, 2013 @ 6:04 PM

Don't listen to Millard's lawyer. He talks like he has known him his whole life but he hasn't & was just hired by Millard.

& how did the truck end up at his mother's home in Kleinburg. Mommy Millard didn't know anything?

Millard can afford a $800K piece of property but can't afford $25K for a truck?

Innocent until proven guilty but if Millard is the guy, hope they nail this SOB.

Went to pick up some wine tonight at the LCBO for the weekend because I am out of town Wednesday to Friday. I know there is a threat of a strike this weekend, but why are the shelves pretty much cleaned out (at least here at my local store)Either the store people are not stocking the shelf, or management does not think there will be a strike.

May 14, 2013 @ 8:39 PM

You really are a combative asshole who uses irrelevance as a crutch.

My point was mocking yours. That the money lost by the Liberals should be used on transit. Or that the province should find Toronto's subway.

May 14, 2013 @ 11:05 PM

1)He attempts to jam his opinion down your throat with flawed logic, misdirection and half baked theories he tries to pass off as facts.

2) Someone disagrees with him....well everyone disagrees with him, but one of us gets particularly vocal about it.

3) He makes a personal attack and/ or attacks said persons intelligence.

4) Said person rightfully tells him to fuck off, or some variation thereof. (Sorry bout the language Mike)

5) Dave tells the person they have anger issues and he pities them.

See McNulty, Dave is a tiny, sad, angry little man who probably hasn't had anyone but himself touch his pecker in years. One of his few joys in life is to get people in here riled up.

I would suggest to McNulty that he just stick to his usual boring, inane posts - that way no one is going to bother challenging him and he wont have to get all hissy in them.

@Phil, seriously? I will take the high road again as taking shots at you would be too easy. Although it is nice that you finally have found a brother in arms so kudos.
@Mike; the Star has lost all credibility and are approaching tabloid status with their fabricated attacks on Rob Ford. It seems they need Rob Ford just to have traffic on their site and to boost their sagging newspaper sales.
They have honestly turned into a joke of a publication.

Yikes. What in the world is going on? Did someone stand in the middle of a room and yell, "Rob Ford!" to watch the sparks fly (love him or hate him - he sure is one polarizing dude). UGH.

@Dawn She lost it a good LONG time ago.

@Cheryl Smithershit was on TVO the other night - talk about serious anger management issues. He was disrespectful to Steve Paikin - and there's never any need for that. Smithershit's lack of grace and intelligence was no match for Steve's professionalism and wisdom.

@Phil, I am not sure of what your point is here. The one thing that Mike has always been fond of is open and clean debate and that has what has drawn most to his blog since the beginning. Somewhere down the line you lost your independant voice (which was refreshing at times), but now has turned into a minion to people that lead you to a dark area. I realize that you are grasping at straws to feel like you belong to something, but try to allow yourself the freedom to think independently. In Freudian psychoanalysis your behavior towards me is known as displacement, but for the greater good, I could live with that.

May 15, 2013 @ 11:45 AM

@ Argie and Dave

Please go back and find when I get upset when my comments or my logic is flawed. I rarely comment. And besides being called gay (or as Argie put "you people") and apparently having anger issues, I don't get called out for comments without meaning or relevance.

Go ahead and try and question my logic or intergrity. You won't win.

In the history of this site and mine if your read it, I don't get upset or angry or take things too seriously. What bothers me most is when people like Argie and Dave honestly think they are better than anyone else. They think their opinions are never flawed or wrong and everyone else is wrong. Facts be damned! They are always right.

I have been wrong and I will be wrong again. But I know one thing, Dave you are an asshole (how vulgar!). Argie, you're just a jerk because you like to be. And I know you're aware that you are. So it's sort of funny and I get where you come from, even though calling me gay was stupid.

May 15, 2013 @ 12:37 PM

I apologize for hinting that you might be gay - using the phrase "your parade". That was childish and weak.

You haven't insulted me in this discussion but certainly in the past when I've stated an opinion that was different from yours, you've attacked not just my opinion but my intelligence.

I personally don't mind if people want to debate - in fact its better if we do as opposed to all agreeing on everything. The only thing that annoys me is when someone requests that Mike ban certain individuals from posting. That to me, just shows they've lost the debate and have no other recourse but to stifle their opponent.

May 15, 2013 @ 12:54 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie- I will debate with you anytime you want...I enjoy the verbal banter. You and I clearly have very different political and social views, but that's the beauty of our society.

Dave does not debate...Dave states his opinion then insults when people disagree.

I have never asked Mike to remove anyone from this site....Mike made his own feelings on Dave quite clear yesterday.

I would argue feverishly against you being banned, and have defended your right to have an opinion.

...however I stand by my comment that I wish Dave would find something else to do with his time.

At Pearson this morning for an early flight to Chicago. The US customs area is packed, you know the snake line thing.
Anyway there is a lady in a wheelchair behind me being pushed a younger man. We strike up a conversation discussing the typical hassle of travel these days etc..Turns out it is a mother/son heading off to Florida.
After about 10 minutes or so, someone comes up to them and takes them out of the line and moves them to the front of the line without any asking or prodding. I think nothing of it, but a few around me are pissed about the "special treat".."Is their time worth more than mine" type of comments.
Just curious what etiquette is here. They did not seem to be in any discomfort and did not ask to be moved to the front. Like I said, I thought nothing of it, but curious what others think.

How about a once a week thread specifically for our circular combatants who never learn to accept another point of view or never learn to shut the fuck up?

My wife works in the school system (K-8) and her charges have better social skills and manners than those of you who continue to turn this blog into a very unlikeable and unpleasant place to be.

I was really hoping a second Open Mike would be fun. Do you really need a second time in the week to make complete and absolute fools of yourselves? I'm not talking about trolling, as I can ignore or laugh at that. I'm talking about a few posters who are so arrogant and discourteous they turn a fun place to be into a sad and pathetic thread that has no place on a blog I genuinely appreciate and respect.

Guys, get it out of your collective systems on this thread TODAY, and maybe have the courtesy and decency to participate in Friday's Open Mike, and all future Open Mikes, without running those into the ground as well.

@4x4 Time

I think it's to prevent a longer lineup when people are filing through the plane. Standing in those cramped aisles waiting to get to your seat isn't a lot of fun, so those with special needs usually get on first. So the way I see it, people's time IS being respected.

People already have an assigned seat and the plane will leave when it's ready to leave anyway. But the process is simplified.

Just my take anyway.

May 15, 2013 @ 1:57 PM

Dave Williams

@McNulty, I will not demand an apology, your opinion is what it is and I accept it, although you could have dug deeper in your volcabulary and come up with something more original.
@Phil, your views may have been challenged by me in the past, but if you read back, I can honestly state that there was not one direct insult to you and you would be hard pressed to find one.
I know differece of opinion is difficult for some to swallow, but that is the beauty of free speech. We get the opportunity to hear others opinions, digest them and learn from them.
The key thing that Mike does with this site is to allow all to openly discuss issues, concerns and daily positives and negatives without censorship. When you listen to Mike's podcast, you can see that Mike enjoys various opinions and he welcomes them all.
The sad thing here is that you Phil are the one who gets insulting when your opinion is not accepted. Then you look to others for approval to make an attempt to validate what you state. When I disagree, I never resort to bombastic name calling, I do however attempt to show another side of reasoning that you have closed your mind too.

May 15, 2013 @ 2:07 PM

As for Ford magnets into car, once again deflect the incident & attack the messenger. BTW the national post also has the story. But again it's the newspaper at fault, Ford supporters see nothing strange about a Mayor skipping out of a meeting to put s*it on peoples cars. Seriously it's just bizarre. But maybe he did it to deflect what's happening in Etobicoke.

Etobicoke is knowns as the most underdeveloped residential and business wise compared to the rest of the city, heck maybe even the entire GTA. So developers want to build a retail/condo where the old Humbertown 1950s strip mall was. Perfect spot right? Except the locals want to stay in the 50s & don't take kindly to "new folks" coming to their parts.

So what does our pro business & development Mayor stand on this. Of course stand with the worst case of NIMBYism there is. A location pointed by staff and developers that needs to be expanded with the underused Subway near by and the new Eglington LRT being build. But they want to stay in the 1950s way of living, and that coward Ford stands right next to them.

That's what makes Ford the worst, I can live with a conservative. But he isn't that! He's not "pro business" heck just look the lack of development of any kind in his ward. Ford is the worst of politicians, who stand for nothing but to try to get himself elected by pandering to people sense of "victimhood" at the expense of building the community and city for the better.

@4x4, I travel quite a bit and have witnessed this situation before. The airlines try to get the passengers with disabilities on first as it takes more time to get them into their seats and their carry-ons in place. If they would allow everyone to seat at the same time, the passengers would bottleneck. You could seat the diabled last, but it would slow the process as others would have to move to accomidate. Overall, the ones who complain are either not understanding as we know that some people can be.

May 15, 2013 @ 3:16 PM

Dave Williams

I was concluding with "Overall, the ones who complain are either not understanding or ignorant as we know that some people can be.

Anyway, baseball is a boring game. It's no good. Anyway, new hockey season in October. My Habs are going to do great and so will my coyotes.

As for the wheelchair thing, people usually move disabled people to the front of the line. That's how it is.

May 15, 2013 @ 4:58 PM

@Cheryl Are you for f'ing real? Jesus.

Do it, Cheryl. Add something new to the discussion. I know you can!

@4x4, National Post has an article today about people hiring disabled guides at Disney to get them to the head of the line, so they don't need to wait. I can see the logic with airlines etc. but when there is blatant abuse as with the Disney article, and the azz hats who use the disabled permits for parking, this makes me boil.
What pees me off more at the Airport are the Nexen card holders and the damn Cloud 10 American express card holders getting put to the head of the line at security.
