Jose Canseco for mayor!

January 4, 2013 @ 9:22 AM

OK, here's my first rant of 2013.

Why do Canadians get so hot and bothered about the World Jr Championship when the rest of the world doesn't give a crap? Its not like we're dominant in this tournament - the last time we won the thing was 2009. I realize hockey is the official religion of Canada but please lets get a collective grip on things.

Oh and another thing - how many times are hockey commentators/pundits going to tell us "don't blame Malcolm Subban for the loss" despite the fact he let in 4 goals on 16 shots. Um, would they be so defensive of Subban if he was white? Just wondering.

As for Jose for mayor - well its not much worse than having Pinball Clemons for mayor - as has been suggested.

January 4, 2013 @ 9:26 AM

2013 is so far so good. No complaints here.

I do hope if Ford is ousted as mayor that they don't call another election. I'd rather see council appoint someone mayor until the term expires.

My 2 cents... and the Jose Canseco thing is sad in that some of us might actually prefer him over Robbo.

It would be very difficult to be a black man in your world.

Any time a black man is defended or successful or accomplishes something, you'll say it's because they're black. Meanwhile, if they're unsuccessful or do something wrong, it's because they're black. A black man can't win in your world, even if they do win.

I honestly don't think anyone is defending the play of Malcolm Subban because of the colour of his skin.

January 4, 2013 @ 9:36 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Mike - Argie is a racist no doubt about it. People are defending Malcolm because of a simple fact....he is a teenager, a very talented one, but a teenager nonetheless.

These kids are being held to the same standard as proven NHL stars by some people. Which is why you have idiots out there saying we need a summit to figure out whats wrong with hockey in Canada.

January 4, 2013 @ 9:43 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie - I happen to know Pinball, I went to a bunch of football camps he ran when I was in high school, I actually ran into him about a hear and a half ago and he remembered me.

Why do you think he'd make a bad mayor, other thank the color of his skin. He ran the Argo's succefully, he now runs a highly respected charitable organization that has bult over 200 schools in 3rd world countries.

He's intellegent, well spoken, honest and has a proven track record of running succefull enterprises.

So I ask you Argie, other than the fact that he's black, what is your problem with pinball?? I think toronto would be lucky to have him as a mayor.

January 4, 2013 @ 9:56 AM

Phil & Mike,

I guess speaking the truth can label one a racist in your PC world.

Before people get excited about the Jose Canseco story, and everything that guy says should be taken with a huge chunk of salt, here are the sobering facts.

To run for Council (Mayor or Councillor) the person must be:

A Canadian citizen
At least 18 years of age
A resident of the City of Toronto
Own or lease property in the City of Toronto (or be the spouse of the owner or lessee)
Not legally prohibited from voting
Not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office

Last I checked, Canseco is out with #1... although I suppose in time that could be remedied.

But really, let's think bigger. We need a mayor worthy of this city, and that's neither Ford nor Canseco.

January 4, 2013 @ 9:57 AM

Well, 2013 started off with a cold. It sucks. I'm all stuffed up now. That's no good. It started Tuesday night. I always get my flu shot every year and then I get a stupid cold. No good.

January 4, 2013 @ 9:57 AM

The flu shot won't help you not get the common cold. It's a fact, you can look it up.

January 4, 2013 @ 10:00 AM

Not sure if this is accurate but someone said on Twitter Jose is actually a citizen from his time here with the Blue Jays. Again, not sure if this is true but Twitter told me so.

And secondly, it isn't Subban's fault we lost. No goalie could have saved those first three goals. Team Canada was beat by the better team, black goalie or not.

January 4, 2013 @ 10:00 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Arige - give me a logical reason why pinball would make a bad mayor and I'll retract my statement...

January 4, 2013 @ 10:00 AM

Pinball seems like a great guy - a very religious one at that! Just because he's a great guy and a terrific speaker makes him a great mayor. This city needed someone like Ford to cut costs - not a celebrity.

I wouldn't want Dougie or Wendell running this city either - so race has nothing to do with it. I resent someone like you calling me a racist. You barely know the meaning of that word and many others.

Go read a history book.

January 4, 2013 @ 10:01 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie - Definetion of racist from websters:

1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.

2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

Many of the comments I have read from you over the years show that you believe both. I can go back in the archives section of this blog and pull out some examples if you'd like....

I've got a College Diploma and a University Degree, I've read a lot of books.

As far as the Pinball comment goes, you've now made a logical argument..I disagree with it, but the argument is sound.

January 4, 2013 @ 10:11 AM

OK Phil, as for Subban - my comment wasn't about him personally. It was about how the sports media was going out of their way to protect him. That, to me is racist.

The sports media by the way is 99% white so my comment is in no way racist. Do you understand now?

January 4, 2013 @ 10:20 AM

As a long time vinyl fan, for over 35 years, I am amazed at the selection and reasonable prices of all the remastered albums comming out. Some of the 45rpm LP's are amazing. I got a bunch of new ones for Christmas I will be spinning this weekend. If anyone is looking for a great store, great selection and very knowledgeable staff, check out Alternative Audio in Dundas. Also have some killer audio equipment.

January 4, 2013 @ 10:21 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie - Great, glad to hear it. You're not racist, it's everyone else who is.

Now what about all the comments you've made regarding muslims and other immigrants many many times on this blog??

January 4, 2013 @ 10:23 AM

So Phil, you want me to go back and explain and defend any comment that may have been perceived by you as racist??? You're hilarious.

For starters (and we've covered this before), islam is NOT a race. Just like Catholicism and Judaism, people from many races make up its followers. Is this difficult to follow?

January 4, 2013 @ 10:39 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Arige - Nope...I don't want you to do anyhting....I know what I've read, and you sir have a problem with anyone who isn't white. Many folks on this blog could back me up on that one.

And no, that is not hilarious, it's sad actually. I feel bad for you that you have such hate inside you.

January 4, 2013 @ 10:42 AM

Jose is not a Canadian Citizen (confirmed by his agent).

January 4, 2013 @ 10:51 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Elvis - I think that is something that we all, as canadians, can be proud of...

January 4, 2013 @ 11:03 AM

You're wrong Phil.

January 4, 2013 @ 11:04 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Corey - I am often wrong, and about many things. Could you be a little more specific :)

January 4, 2013 @ 11:16 AM

Canseco reminds me of Harry Truman. Both knew all of the tricks of their day. Truman is well regarded as one of America's best presidents. Gov. Ventura was another successful pro athlete (and a former Navy Seal) turned U.S. politician.

"Own or lease property in the City of Toronto (or be the spouse of the owner or lessee)". What does that mean for the average, single, renter here in an increasingly investment-condo city?

January 4, 2013 @ 11:21 AM

@Phil - Argie isn't a racist. Maybe it's the New Year effect, and I'm not yet grouchy enough to get into a prolonged debate, so I'm not going to bother adding more than that.

January 4, 2013 @ 11:42 AM

Dave Williams

@Mississauga Phil, just when I thought you could not be more asinine, you prove me wrong again. Pinball for mayor? And you base this deep assessment on the fact that he is a great guy and coach?
Then you accuse a guy of being a racist because you interpret your own beliefs into what you think you may have read?
Your track record of reading people is confusing at best. I will bet that you think Hazel Mcallion was not a good Mayor for 20 plus years. Maybe you are one that thinks that Don Cherry would have done a better job as he was a good coach.
As Argie stated, go read a book.
Next time think before you post. I know that will be difficult for you.

January 4, 2013 @ 11:46 AM

Come on Phil, can we change the topic and discuss that portly Indian chief who claims to be on a hunger strike? There's so much that can be said about this.

Oops, am I being "racist" again?

January 4, 2013 @ 11:55 AM

@Cheryl Don't get the flu shot. Let your bodies immune system do it's work naturally.

@Mike I'm not the most patient guy so when are we getting this podcast announcement?

January 4, 2013 @ 12:07 PM

What made me smile today was Commander Chris Hadfield questioning his decision to wear a red shirt on the International Space Station.

Trekkies will get that one.

January 4, 2013 @ 12:17 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Don't get your medical advice from @Matt, I don't believe he's a doctor. I'll bet your doctor recommends you get the flu shot as mine does.

I'm still working on it... now I fear the announcement will be underwhelming. The big change has more to do with how and where we record rather than where it will be heard. I'm working on a personal investment and just making sure I do it right before I dump a lot of money into it...

January 4, 2013 @ 12:26 PM

519 Rob

Thanks for the vinyl recomendation, I'll be sure to check 'em out.
If you have a Beat Goes On where you live, they (or at least most) sell vinyl now too. Their prices seem a little high, but its not that bad. London has a couple of good new vinyl stores too if you are ever that way (Grooves is down town, and the name of the second is escaping me at the moment).

January 4, 2013 @ 1:01 PM

Sam in Pickering

Not the flu shot debate again!

Think of the supreme arrogance required to completely reject good science and assume one knows more than our doctors.

Trust science. Trust our doctors.

January 4, 2013 @ 1:22 PM

Dave Williams

Sam, how many of these people that do not take the flu shot would have polio today using that same logic in the 1950's? You nailed it with Trust Science.

January 4, 2013 @ 1:53 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Glen - Love it...the red shirt always dies!!!

January 4, 2013 @ 1:54 PM

I feel like Argie stirring up controversy lol.

Just picked up R.A Dickeys book. Been meaning to read it for awhile.

@Mike I'm still intrigued.

Sure glad the government settled the teachers contract dispute, and are now going to repeal bill 115, as it is no longer needed. Great for the TDSB also, as the less than stellar Trades Council got their dictatorship renewed. Should now cost double to put up a Pencil Sharpener with the provinces blessing.

January 4, 2013 @ 2:49 PM

The announcement is that Toronto Mike'd is the new morning show on Zoomer Radio AM740.

January 4, 2013 @ 3:15 PM

I'd just like to say I'll miss Alan Ashby calling Jays games. He's left for a similar job with the Houston Astros.

Who will join Jerry for 2013?

@Toronto Mike; Congratulations, I hope you have good run, I also hope that Howard and Fred are still friends as this seems to be a competitive market.

January 4, 2013 @ 3:25 PM

2013 in 1 word- AWFUL.

I've been in bed since 8pm on New Year's Eve with the worst flu I've ever had. Chills high fever hacking cough headache weakness body aches to name a few.

I went to chuck e cheese (chuck e disease) on dec 29th with wife and 4 year old daughter and they are both fine. Why is that? They got the flu shot and I never did.

Never again will I go without a flu shot I feel like ass.

Aw Mike, I thought you would be a great Happy Gang member, but you would have a stroke with the playlist!

January 4, 2013 @ 6:15 PM

I'm guessing part of the podcast announcement involves moving to a new recording venue because Rosie doesn't like the chemicals at the 5 Hour (a completely understandable, acceptable complaint).

Sorry to chime in on Vinyl again, but just listened to The Allman Brothers - Eat a Peach, remastered....WOW!...By the way, anybody seen a band at the "new" El Mo yet?

January 4, 2013 @ 7:04 PM

Fun fact everyone! I decided, kind of like our gracious host Mike, to start being more conscious of the things I eat. There is a Tim Horton's in the food court at work that I occasionally meet a friend at for a mid-morning coffee. I was feeling a bit peckish, so figured a cheese croissant would be a better option than a donut, muffin or danish. Boy, was I wrong.
I looked it up - the cheese croissant (which seems fairly light, fluffy, and not really any cheese to speak of) weighs in at a hefty 320 calories, an appalling 20 g of fat, and about 1/3 of the daily recommended amount of sodium. I would have been way better off ordering a Boston Cream doughnut, that has 70 less calories and half the fat and sodium.

January 4, 2013 @ 7:26 PM

Reminds me of the Oat Bran health craze, and Tim's Oat Bran muffins. Turned out -you were better off overall with that same Boston Creme.
I think most muffins still top the doughnut in total badness. It's time for a Boston Creme health craze.

January 4, 2013 @ 8:03 PM

I miss Bo Jackson.

January 4, 2013 @ 8:12 PM

The new Dropkick Murphy's album is amazing! :)

January 4, 2013 @ 8:19 PM

Just watched a BIO on Andy Kaufman. Even REM dedicated a song for him, Man on the Moon.

He was a genius in comedy & didn't when he was serious or not during his routine.
Only other comedians that can be in the same class as Andy are George Carlin, Red Skelton, Tim Conway & Jackie Gleason.

Andy you sang better than Elvis

January 4, 2013 @ 8:49 PM

I remember the first time I saw Andy Kaufman, it was on Dick Van Dyke's variety show, my family gathered 'round the 19" Zenith. I don't even remember his name from that show ( didn't make the connection until Taxi), but he came on stage with a record player, talking in some foreign-like language, playing a record, and talking to the audience, and then looking confused, as if waiting for some response or validation he didn't get. I remember the camera switching to Van Dyke off-stage, and I can still see the expression on his face- an anticipating wide smile, almost nodding his head in anticipation, yet as confused as everybody. It's still one of the most lasting visual memories I have of television.

January 4, 2013 @ 9:26 PM

@ dale,I totally disagree.I never understood Kaufmans brand of hunour. I think he sucked. You are showing your age with Skelton , Gleason annd Conway..My picks are . Carlin,Pryer, Williams and check out Louis CK on you tube, you will laugh your ass off.....

January 4, 2013 @ 9:39 PM

Pryor & Williams were my next best after the 5 I mentioned.

Well, my doctor always recommends I get the flu shot. That's why I always get it. I had mine back in November. Now I have a stupid cold which sucks. fortunately no fever though. Anyway, too bad about my Suns. They lost. That's no good. Quit calling them the Bums though. Your Raptors lost as well.

January 5, 2013 @ 7:18 AM

How do you know Dawn supports the Raps?

My son was sick between Xmas and NY with the flu, and then my wife managed to get bronchitis. For the past few days I've been feeling rather blech too but it hasn't turned into anything yet. Here's hoping it doesn't and just goes away

As far as Tim Horton's goes, I haven't been all that impressed with the quality of their edibles for years now. They don't even bake the donuts in the store anymore.

Taking time for a quiet weekend...

January 5, 2013 @ 9:26 AM

January 5, 2013 @ 7:30 PM

@Anon&on I sent a few simple requests to the Toronto Mike'd Podcast HR Department in anticipation of our new recording space. In addition to a studio devoid of noxious fumes, I asked for an electric kettle, a supply of Mint Chocolate Rooibos from David's Tea, and a small bowl of fresh licorice allsorts with the round aniseed ones picked out. Nothing too over-the-top.
I haven't heard back yet. That's cool, I'm sure they are busy.

January 5, 2013 @ 7:34 PM

@TO Mike I also asked that someone speak to you about that Canada Dry pop bottle you insist on reusing for water. I have concerns that the plastic is leaching out of the bottle into your brain.

@Jamie Chuck e disease! haha that's a good one

I'm but a simple man with a tiny carbon footprint. I choose to re-use this safe bottle with our well-tested tap water. I'm a damn folk hero!

January 5, 2013 @ 7:58 PM

@Mike yes, you are a regular David Suzuki. Perhaps I will get you some sort of obnoxious hipster thermos to put your water in. If I get one with the Toronto Mike'd logo on it, you won't be able to resist using it.

But maybe we should sell these Toronto Mike'd Thermoses to finance our next phase...

Well, the NHL lockout is over. We will get hockey back, goody. My habs and coyotes will play this season. I don't know when it will start, but they'll play hockey.

January 6, 2013 @ 8:07 AM

I hope people follow through with their boycott threats.

I for one will not be watching any NHL hockey.

January 6, 2013 @ 9:39 AM

Well, y'all can boycott, that's fine by me, but I will be back to work ASAP.

Mike, as soon as I know my NHL work schedule, I will let you know and we'll get it done. I won't leave you hanging, I promise.

It'll feel like I'm teaching first year radio students again... good times, good times.

January 6, 2013 @ 10:16 AM

Rick C in Oakville

@Rosie: Don't ask for too much or Mike might impose Bill 115 on you and take awya your bargaining rights. Then you will need to stage some sort of protest, hunger, work withdrawal, no extra curriculars, then you can tell him you are doing for the show. Maybe showing some of my political bias on this one. Anyways waiting for your anticipated announcement guy and girl.

January 6, 2013 @ 12:28 PM
